Toronto, ON Aluminum Shingles: Expert Interlock Roof Installation Review and Lasting Wind-Resistant Performance

Toronto, ON

Scott M.

It was easy to talk to and work with all of the knowledgeable people at Interlock. Before we committed to go with Interlock, we looked at several roofs in the area that had Interlock installed (using Google street view, due to a COVID-19 stay-at-home order); they all looked great.

Tony started the installation work on April 5, 2021 and completed it on April 14, taking about 7 days of work. It took this long since Tony did all of the work himself, but at least he is a highly trained person (for over 30 years) making sure all of the work is done properly. Before he started, Tony discussed a few details with me to clarify exactly the method to be used, such as how to seal around two brick chimneys and how to fit the roof edge to the covered eaves troughs. The Interlock system was installed over top of one layer of old shingles. The Interlock tiles are held down with nails that have rings around them, so they will hold like screws. The Interlock tiles are mechanically locked in to each other on all four sides, so I don’t expect any future problems with any wind damage. Everything looks great. Hopefully the surface will now discourage the racoons from going on the roof (and leaving their excrement).

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Toronto

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Toronto often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Toronto may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs in Toronto commonly last 40–70+ years, while asphalt shingles typically have shorter lifespans (often 15–25 years). Toronto’s climate features pronounced freeze–thaw cycles, winter snow loads and growing extremes like heavier rainfall and hotter summers, all of which influence roof performance and longevity. Cold–warm cycling and snow/ice increase risk of ice dams, thermal stress and moisture penetration; heavy rain and occasional hail/wind events add impact and corrosion risk, while summer heat and UV accelerate material ageing. Homeowners choose durable roofing systems to reduce maintenance, better shed snow and water, resist impacts and extend service life. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy-gauge aluminium and come with a lifetime limited 50-year transferable warranty designed for long-term protection.
Metal roofs in Toronto typically cost more upfront than asphalt shingles, but exact prices vary widely by roof size, slope, complexity, tear‑off, flashing, skylights and labour. Local conditions — notably repeated freeze–thaw cycles and heavy winter snowfall that raise ice‑dam and load concerns — can require heavier gauges, specialised fastening and better flashing, which increases install cost. Other local construction factors (access, permits, roof pitch and contractor availability) also affect quotes. Many homeowners compare options on lifetime value rather than initial price: durable metal systems usually reduce future repair and replacement costs and may outperform cheaper materials over decades. Interlock Metal Roofing positions its products and installations around long‑term ownership value and durability rather than trying to be the lowest‑cost roofing option.
Metal roofing can be worth it in Toronto for homeowners who prioritise durability and long‑term protection. Lifespan: metal often endures 40–70+ years versus 15–25 years for asphalt shingles. Maintenance: metal needs less routine upkeep and resists rot, moss and moisture damage better; asphalt requires more frequent repairs and eventual replacement. Durability: metal handles freeze–thaw cycling, wind and heavy snow better and sheds snow more readily, while shingles are more prone to granular loss and edge lift. Long‑term value: higher upfront cost for metal is often offset by lower life‑cycle costs and fewer roof replacements. Toronto has cold, snowy winters and notable freeze–thaw cycles that stress roofing materials, plus seasonal precipitation that affects flashing and shingles. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals to homeowners seeking long‑term performance and architectural curb appeal because interlocking panels improve watertightness, snow shedding and a clean finish.
This is a common myth in Toronto, ON: metal roofs are loud in rain. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking and proper underlayment don’t sound like barn roofs. Sound depends on the whole roof assembly — insulation, attic space, underlayment and framing — which absorb and break up impact noise. Installation quality and correct fastening, flashings and ventilation also strongly affect acoustic performance. When specified and installed correctly, residential metal roofing is typically comparable in sound to asphalt shingle or tile roofs during rainfall. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems designed for residential homes, incorporating decking, underlayments and attachments to manage weather and acoustic performance.
Yes — a metal roof can be energy efficient in Toronto. Metal roofing reflects sunlight, reducing heat gain in summer and lowering cooling loads. Overall energy performance depends on the full roof assembly: insulation levels, air sealing and attic ventilation are critical to control heat flow year-round. Toronto’s humid continental climate — warm summers, cold winters — means reflective benefits in summer but winter heat retention relies on insulation and proper air barriers. Homeowners considering replacement often prioritise energy efficiency to reduce utility bills, improve comfort, and increase resale value while meeting local building codes and sustainability goals. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered to integrate with insulation and ventilation strategies and are designed to support long-term home performance.
Toronto experiences severe winter storms, ice storms, heavy lake‑effect snow, strong winds and occasional hail that can damage roofs. Metal roofing resists wind uplift when engineered interlocks and secure fastenings are used, sheds snow and ice effectively, and—while highly durable—can dent from very large hail. Proper profiling, underlayment and flashing keep water out during heavy rain or ice storms. Performance depends on roofing system design, installation quality and material durability. In Toronto, freeze–thaw cycles and ice dams are common and can exacerbate leaks and shingle failure, so durable materials, correct ventilation and workmanship matter. Homeowners prioritise weather resilience because a robust roof reduces damage risk, lowers repair and insurance costs, and preserves comfort and property value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection and wind resistance.
Corrosion and rust resistance vary by metal: stainless steel, zinc and aluminium offer greater protection than untreated steel. Some materials are inherently more corrosion‑resistant, so performance depends on the metal chosen and its protective coatings. Aluminium performs particularly well in wet or coastal environments because it forms a stable oxide layer that limits corrosion. Homeowners should prioritise corrosion resistance to extend roof lifespan, reduce maintenance and prevent leaks or structural damage from rust, especially in Toronto’s wet and freeze–thaw conditions. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction designed for strong corrosion resistance. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection, combining durable substrate and coating to improve longevity and lower lifecycle costs.
Metal roofing in Toronto, Ontario is generally a low‑maintenance, durable choice. However, no roof is completely maintenance‑free. Homeowners should inspect roofs periodically—after storms and at least seasonally—to look for loose or damaged panels, fasteners, sealant deterioration and compromised flashings. Clear leaves, branches and other debris from roof surfaces and gutters to prevent trapped moisture or ice dams. Check roof penetrations (vents, skylights, chimneys) and surrounding flashings for gaps or corrosion, and ensure gutters and downspouts are functioning. Severe weather, heavy snowfall, freeze–thaw cycles and seasonal debris can accelerate wear or cause localized damage. With routine checks and timely minor repairs, metal roofs deliver long life and lower maintenance needs for Toronto homes.
Metal roofing can increase a home’s value in Toronto. Buyers often prioritise durable, low‑maintenance roofs, and premium materials that boost curb appeal can make a property more competitive. Metal’s long lifespan and resistance to rot, insects and severe weather improves buyer confidence and can justify a higher asking price. Neighbourhood architectural style matters — an ornate Victorian may favour slate profiles while contemporary homes suit standing seam. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles — slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam — in heavy‑gauge aluminium and solid copper, allowing you to match local styles while delivering durability and premium colour and finish options. That combination often translates to stronger resale appeal and faster sales.
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are solar‑compatible; Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. provides custom solar brackets that integrate with the standing‑seam profile. Toronto’s winters bring significant snowfall and frequent freeze–thaw cycles that increase snow‑load, ice‑dam and fastener concerns. Because panels remain for decades, roof lifespan matters — long‑lasting materials (like interlock metal) are often preferred. Homeowners should plan for future solar when replacing a roof so mounts, warranties and service access align. Choose durable finishes and ensure brackets and seals are rated for Toronto’s conditions to reduce maintenance and protect warranties. Interlock systems are designed to support solar mounting solutions, but confirm bracket design and installer experience before proceeding.
