Calgary, AB Metal Roofing Review: Why We Chose Interlock Again After Major 2024 Hail Storm

Calgary, AB

Kevin W.

When we decided to have our asphalt shingles replaced back in July of 2015 we decided to pursue a metal roofing design to assist in coping with increased fire, wind and hail concerns. Since the original install we have experienced some hail and wind events and our roof appeared to be in good standing over the past nine years We did experience a slight reduction in our home insurance due to the installation of our metal roof (help offset extra cost of this product) However in August 2024 the City of Calgary experienced a major hail event we required a complete replacement of the roofing system (no holes just dents and damage to shingle finish) We decided to return back to Interlock based on past experience with their knowledgeable sale and installation staff We were happy to see Interlock’s commitment to continuous improvement with respect to a better underlayment system (wider, sturdier ridge caps) that improve the look and integrity of our home.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Calgary

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Calgary often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Calgary may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs commonly last 40–70+ years, while asphalt shingles typically last much less (often 15–25 years). In Calgary, two local factors especially affect roof longevity: frequent, sometimes severe hailstorms that can dent or puncture roofing, and strong freeze–thaw temperature swings that stress seams and fasteners as materials expand and contract.Calgary is known for hailstorms that damage roofs, making impact resistance important. Homeowners choose metal roofing for its durability, resistance to hail, low maintenance, and better performance under freeze–thaw cycles and snow loads. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy-gauge aluminium and come with a lifetime limited 50-year transferable warranty designed for long-term protection.
Metal roofs in Calgary generally cost more upfront than asphalt shingles, but many homeowners choose them for longer life and lower long‑term maintenance. Final cost depends on roof size, slope, complexity (hips, valleys, dormers), tear‑off, flashing, skylights and labour. Local construction factors — climate exposures (snow, hail), municipal permitting, waste disposal and regional labour and material rates — also influence pricing in Calgary, AB. Durable metal systems can reduce future repair and replacement costs, so many homeowners compare options based on lifetime value rather than initial price alone. Consider warranty, expected service life and total ownership costs when choosing a system. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long‑term ownership value and system performance rather than competing as a low‑cost roofing option.
Metal roofing is often worth the extra cost in Calgary for homeowners who prioritise durability and long‑term protection, while asphalt shingles remain more affordable up front. Metal typically lasts 40–70+ years versus 15–30 years for shingles. Maintenance for metal is low (periodic inspections, fastener checks); asphalt needs more frequent repairs or replacement after hail or granule loss. Durability: metal better resists hail, wind uplift and freeze–thaw cycling; asphalt is more susceptible to impact damage and accelerated wear. Long‑term value: higher initial cost for metal is often offset by longer life, lower maintenance and better resale. Calgary’s climate — frequent summertime hail and rapid freeze–thaw swings from Chinook winds — increases risk to shingles and makes long‑lasting, hail‑resistant materials attractive. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals to homeowners seeking lasting protection, snow shedding, and strong architectural curb appeal.
This is a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking do not sound like old barn roofs. When fitted as part of a complete roof assembly — with solid sheathing, underlayment, insulation and an attic cavity — a metal roof’s sound during rain is typically comparable to other roofing materials. Insulation, attic space and the overall roof assembly all affect how much rain noise you hear, and installation quality (secure fastening, correct underlayment and flashings) matters. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems designed for residential homes, so when properly specified and installed they are not noticeably louder than shingle, tile or other common roofing types.
Metal roofing can be energy efficient in Calgary. Metal panels reflect sunlight, reducing summer heat gain and cooling demand, while their durability helps with long-term thermal performance. However, overall energy results depend on the entire roof assembly: adequate insulation, proper air sealing and balanced ventilation determine winter heat loss, moisture control and prevention of ice dams. Calgary’s climate—cold, dry winters with chinook winds and sunny summers—means reflectivity helps in summer, but insulation quality is the main driver of winter savings. Homeowners researching roof replacement often prioritise energy efficiency to lower utility bills, improve year‑round comfort, reduce environmental impact and increase resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance.
Q: How does metal roofing perform in Calgary, AB severe weather? Calgary faces frequent hail, strong winds, intense summer storms and recurring freeze–thaw cycles that stress roofs. Metal roofing generally performs well: it sheds snow, resists wind uplift when mechanically fastened or interlocked, and — when specified in heavier gauges or impact-rated profiles — withstands hail better than many asphalt shingles. Actual performance depends on roofing system design (profile, gauge, underlayment), installation quality (fastening, flashings), and material durability (coatings, temper). Homeowners weigh weather resilience for protection, lower repair costs, insurance considerations and longevity. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection and wind resistance, but benefits require correct specification and professional installation.
Corrosion and rust resistance: Metal roofing performance depends on the type of metal. Some metals (steel, aluminium, copper, zinc) offer different levels of corrosion resistance; for example, aluminium performs particularly well in wet or coastal environments because it forms a protective oxide layer. Homeowners should consider corrosion resistance when choosing a roof because it influences service life, maintenance needs, warranty coverage, risk of leaks, and long‑term appearance and property value. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems use aluminium construction engineered for strong corrosion resistance and are further protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection against corrosion and weathering. Choosing a corrosion‑resistant system reduces maintenance, prolongs service life, and helps protect your home in Calgary’s seasonal and sometimes corrosive conditions.
Metal roofing is generally low maintenance, offering long life and resistance to rot and insect damage, but no roof is completely maintenance‑free. Homeowners should inspect their metal roof periodically—after storms and seasonally—to spot loose fasteners, damaged panels, and worn sealant. Check for accumulated debris, clear and repair gutters, and inspect flashing and roof penetrations (vents, chimneys, skylights) for secure seals and corrosion. Wind, hail, heavy snow, ice damming and seasonal debris from trees can affect finishes, fasteners and drainage, so address problems promptly to prevent leaks. Overall, metal roofing remains a durable, low‑maintenance option when paired with routine visual checks and timely minor repairs.
Yes — metal roofing can increase home value in Calgary, AB. Buyers often prioritise durable, low‑maintenance roofs that stand up to Calgary’s freeze–thaw cycles and heavy snow, which can make a property more attractive. Premium roofing materials also enhance curb appeal and help a home stand out in competitive neighbourhoods. A long lifespan and strong warranty improve buyer confidence, reducing perceived near‑term maintenance costs. Architectural style matters too: a metal roof that complements a neighbourhood’s character—heritage streets, infill lots or modern developments—tends to add more value than one that looks out of place. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles (slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam) available in heavy gauge aluminium and solid copper, allowing tailored looks with lasting performance.
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar installation with the installation of custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. Calgary’s frequent large hail and strong freeze–thaw cycles can stress roofs, so choosing a durable roof before mounting panels is important. Roof lifespan matters: long‑lasting materials reduce the chance you’ll need to remove panels for re‑roofing. If you’re replacing a roof, consider future solar plans so load capacity, flashing and mount integration are handled up front. Interlock metal roofs are solar‑compatible and designed to support secure solar mounting solutions, making them a strong long‑term choice for Calgary homeowners.
