Sherwood Park, AB Metal Roofing Review: 20-Year Interlock Aluminum Roof Performance, Durability & Solar Compatibility

Sherwood Park, AB

Bea and Rob D.

We had our roof installed back in August of 2005. We weren’t ready at the time for a new roof, but we started to look into a products that would perk up our home and were environmentally friendly. Our daughter is an Environmental Scientist and it was important to us to select a product that reflected a “good for the environment” priority. The Interlock roof is made from aluminum and was able to be installed right over our existing roof, saving the need to dump it in the landfill. The other products available did not satisfy us and we ended up choosing Interlock, even with the higher price point.

The roof still looks like it did when it was first installed. There has been no change in colour, no fading and there have been no issues. Wind and <a class="wpil_keyword_link" title="Hail" href="” data-wpil-keyword-link=”linked”>Hail were and continue to be a concern for us but thus far, with the high winds and multiple hailstorms, we have had no issue or damage.

A few months ago we decided to install solar panels. There was a lot of discussion if the solar panels could be installed on a metal roof so we were very pleased to learn that it could be done. We’d encourage anyone looking to install solar panels and/ or wanting a roof that a permanent choice, to contact Interlock.

We are sure that had we gone with a lower cost product we would have had to replace it again. 15 years ago we made the decision to buy a roof that would never need to be replaced and we got one.
Thanks Interlock

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Sherwood Park

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Sherwood Park often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Sherwood Park may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

A metal roof in Sherwood Park commonly lasts 40–70+ years; asphalt shingles typically have shorter lifespans (often ~15–25 years). Sherwood Park has cold, snowy winters with frequent freeze–thaw cycles and regular windy conditions, which accelerate wear on asphalt roofs but are handled well by metal systems. Alberta also sees summer hailstorms that can dent or damage weaker materials, another reason many homeowners opt for metal. Homeowners choose durable roofing for long service life, lower maintenance, better resistance to snow loads, ice dams, wind and hail, and improved energy performance. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy-gauge aluminium and include a lifetime limited 50-year transferable warranty for long-term protection.
In Sherwood Park, AB, a metal roof typically costs more upfront than asphalt shingles, but many homeowners view it as an investment in long‑term value. Final price depends on roof size, slope and complexity, whether old roofing must be torn off, the amount of flashing and skylights, and local labour and material availability. Local construction factors—permit requirements, climate considerations, access to the site and contractor schedules—can also influence cost. Rather than comparing only initial price, many homeowners assess roofing options on lifetime value: durable metal systems often lower future repair and replacement costs through longer service life, better weather resistance and lower maintenance. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on designing and installing durable systems that deliver long‑term ownership value and reduced total lifecycle cost, rather than competing as a low‑cost roofing option.
Sherwood Park gets cold, snowy winters with regular freeze–thaw cycles and a summer hail season that can be severe—both key factors for roof choice. Lifespan: metal roofs typically last 40–70+ years; asphalt shingles 15–30 years. Maintenance: metal needs less frequent upkeep (periodic inspections, repainting if needed); shingles need more repairs and eventual replacement. Durability: metal sheds snow and resists wind and many hail events better; shingles are more vulnerable to hail damage and freeze–thaw deterioration. Long‑term value: metal’s higher upfront cost is offset by longer service life, lower lifetime maintenance and better resale potential for owners prioritizing durability and protection. For Sherwood Park homeowners who value long‑term performance, metal is often worth it. Interlock Metal Roofing systems appeal because their interlocking profiles reduce leak paths, offer lasting performance and deliver strong architectural curb appeal.
This is a common myth: metal roofs are noisy when it rains. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking do not sound like barn roofs. Sound depends on the roofing assembly — insulation, attic space, underlayments and deck stiffness all affect impact noise. Installation quality matters: correct fastening, ventilation and continuous decking prevent rattles and improve acoustics. Properly installed residential metal roofing is typically similar in sound to asphalt shingles or tile during rain. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems designed for residential homes, with components chosen to manage noise and weather. In Sherwood Park, AB, a well‑specified, well‑installed metal roof won’t be noticeably noisier than other common roof types.
In Sherwood Park, AB, a metal roof can be energy efficient because its finished surface often reflects sunlight, reducing heat gain in summer. Actual savings depend on the whole roof assembly: underlayment, insulation levels and ventilation all influence thermal performance and winter heat retention. Because Sherwood Park experiences cold winters and warm summers, reflective coatings can help in summer while adequate insulation and airtight installation matter more for heating season efficiency. Homeowners researching roof replacement consider energy efficiency to lower heating and cooling costs, improve year‑round comfort, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance.
Sherwood Park (AB) faces cold, snowy winters, gusty winds and spring/summer thunderstorms that can bring heavy rain and occasional hail—conditions that stress roofs. Metal roofing sheds snow, resists wind uplift when mechanically fastened or interlocked, and can offer strong impact resistance; however severe hail or flying debris may dent thinner gauges or improperly supported panels. Performance depends on: • roofing system design (profile, gauge, underlayment) • installation quality (fastening, flashing, seams) • material durability (gauge, finish, warranty) Seams, fasteners, underlayment and roof slope determine water infiltration and wind performance, so professional installation is critical. Homeowners prioritise weather resilience to reduce repairs, insurance claims and long‑term costs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection, and wind resistance.
Metal roofing corrosion and rust resistance in Sherwood Park, AB: Performance depends on the metal type—some metals corrode faster than others. Materials such as aluminium, zinc and coated steels are more resistant to corrosion; aluminium performs particularly well in wet or coastal conditions because it forms a protective oxide layer and does not rust like iron. Homeowners should prioritise corrosion resistance to avoid leaks, shortened roof life, higher maintenance and potential warranty issues from Alberta’s freeze–thaw cycles and road salt exposure. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction designed for strong corrosion resistance. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection, improving longevity and reducing upkeep.
Metal roofing in Sherwood Park, Alberta is a durable, low‑maintenance option. While metal roofs resist rot and many common issues, no roof is completely maintenance‑free. Homeowners should inspect roofs periodically — after major storms and seasonally in spring and fall — watching for accumulated debris, blocked gutters, damaged flashing, and compromised roof penetrations (vents, chimneys, skylights). Remove branches, leaves, and ice dams that can trap moisture or scratch coatings. Check fasteners and seam sealant and clear gutter downspouts so water drains away from the eaves. Harsh Alberta weather (wind, heavy snow, freeze‑thaw cycles) and seasonal debris can increase wear, so occasional professional checks and timely repairs will prolong the life and appearance of a metal roof.
In Sherwood Park, AB, metal roofing can increase home value. Buyers often prioritise durable, low‑maintenance roofs that reduce future repair costs, and premium roofing materials boost curb appeal. A metal roof’s long lifespan and resistance to Alberta weather—snow, wind and freeze–thaw cycles—can improve buyer confidence at resale. Architectural style matters: a metal roof that complements nearby neighbourhoods and the home’s design will contribute more to perceived value than one that clashes. For Sherwood Park sellers, investing in a well‑chosen metal roof often increases buyer interest and can justify a modest premium at listing. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles—slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam—available in heavy‑gauge aluminium and solid copper, letting homeowners match regional character while delivering durability and low maintenance.
Q: Can solar panels be installed on Interlock Metal Roofing Systems in Sherwood Park? A: Yes. In Sherwood Park, cold snowy winters with significant snow loads, frequent freeze–thaw cycles and occasional hail/wind storms influence roof performance—choose roofing that resists those stresses. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar installation when custom solar brackets are installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. Roof lifespan is important when adding panels: long‑lasting materials reduce the likelihood of removing panels for a reroof. As a homeowner comparing materials here, consider durable metal for longevity and better performance with solar; Interlock systems are designed to support solar mounting solutions.
