Salem, Oregon Fun Facts

Salem is the capital of Oregon, and it’s home to the Oregon State Capitol, which features a distinctive golden pioneer statue known as the “Oregon Pioneer” or simply “Gold Man” at the top of the dome.

Salem is nicknamed the “Cherry City” because of its history of cherry-growing. The city once hosted the Cherry Blossom Festival, which celebrated the region’s vibrant cherry industry.

While the famous Salem Witch Trials occurred in Salem, Massachusetts, Salem, Oregon, is named after its East Coast counterpart. However, there’s no direct connection beyond the name.

Just south of Salem, you’ll find the Enchanted Forest, a quirky, family-owned theme park that has been entertaining visitors with fairy-tale-themed attractions and rides since 1971.

The Willamette River runs through Salem, but did you know that there’s a deep underground river beneath Salem? This ancient riverbed, located hundreds of feet below the surface, is believed to be from the Missoula Floods thousands of years ago.

Salem is home to the historic Elsinore Theatre, which opened in 1926. The theater was originally designed for silent films and vaudeville performances and features Gothic architecture inspired by “Hamlet’s” Elsinore Castle.

Salem has served as a filming location for various movies and TV shows, including “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975), which was filmed in the nearby Oregon State Hospital.

Salem hosts the annual Oregon State Fair, one of the oldest state fairs in the United States, dating back to 1861. The fair is a major event, attracting thousands of visitors each year with its exhibits, rides, and entertainment.

The city’s Riverfront Park is a popular gathering place, featuring a carousel, an amphitheater, and the Willamette Queen, a sternwheeler riverboat that offers cruises on the Willamette River.

Bush’s Pasture Park is a 90-acre public park that was once the estate of pioneer Asahel Bush. The park includes the Bush House Museum, a preserved 19th-century Victorian mansion, and beautiful rose gardens.
