Jim E. and Pam C.

We would like to thank you and Interlock Roofing for job well done in replacing our roof. When you visited to explain your product and what a great improvement it would be to our home, we couldn’t really imagine how true this would be. We had seen other homes in our area with your product and were very impressed by the look of the roof.

From the time of placing our order and having the job completed it was all within the time frame that was quoted to us. We would like to share a special thank you to Jason and Darren, our two installers, who did the job in a very professional manner. Clean up of the yard, after install was completed was also exceptional. Also we certainly appreciated the extra attention that Brad gave in following the progress of the install and his personal contact with us after the job had been completed.

We would recommend Interlock and Brad to family and friends. The thing we like most about the roofing system is that it is maintenance free and we feel this has added value to our home.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Calgary

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Calgary often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Calgary may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs in Calgary commonly last 40–70+ years, while asphalt roofs typically have shorter lifespans. Calgary is prone to large hailstorms that can dent or puncture roofing materials, and many homeowners face repeated freeze–thaw cycles, heavy snow loads and rapid chinook temperature swings that stress flashing, seals and fasteners. Those local factors—hail impact resistance, snow-shedding ability and thermal movement resistance—help explain why homeowners often choose durable metal systems for longer service life and lower long-term maintenance. Metal roofs also resist rot and UV degradation better than asphalt in Calgary’s variable conditions. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy-gauge aluminium and come with a lifetime limited 50-year transferable warranty designed for long-term protection.
Metal roofs in Calgary typically cost more upfront than asphalt shingles, though higher-quality metal systems can save money over time through lower repair and replacement needs. Roof pricing depends on size, slope and complexity, tear-off and disposal, flashing, skylights, underlayments and labour. Calgary’s climate — cold, snowy winters with frequent freeze–thaw cycles and a notable hail risk — also affects material choice, fastening and warranty considerations, which can increase installation cost. Many homeowners compare options on lifetime value (durability, maintenance, energy savings and weather resistance) rather than initial price alone. Durable metal roofing systems typically reduce future repair and replacement costs, especially where snow loads, freeze–thaw and hail are common. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long‑term ownership value rather than competing as a low‑cost roofing option.
Calgary homeowners face large hail events and rapid Chinook-driven freeze–thaw temperature swings that stress roofing materials. Compared to asphalt shingles, metal roofing typically lasts much longer (metal: 40–70+ years; shingles: ~15–30 years), requires less routine upkeep, and resists uplift, hail damage and freeze–thaw deterioration better. Asphalt has lower upfront cost but needs more frequent repairs or replacement after severe hail or repeated freeze–thaw cycles. Durability: metal warps and corrodes less and sheds snow faster; shingles lose granules and can blister. Long-term value: metal’s higher initial price often pays off via longer service life and lower lifecycle maintenance. Metal is not best for every budget or aesthetic — homeowners who prioritise durability and long-term protection often choose metal. Interlock Metal Roofing systems appeal because they combine long service life, strong weather resistance and clean architectural curb appeal for Calgary’s demanding climate.
This is a common myth: metal roofs are noisy in rain. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking don’t sound like barn roofs. A residential metal roof is part of a roof assembly—solid sheathing, underlayments, attic airspace and insulation all reduce rainfall noise. Quality of installation and fastening, underlayment type and attic insulation significantly affect how much sound you hear. When correctly specified and installed, metal roofing typically sounds similar to asphalt shingles or tile during rain. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are supplied and fitted as complete residential roofing systems, engineered to perform with proper decking, underlayments and fixings to minimise noise and ensure long-term performance.
Yes — a metal roof can be energy efficient in Calgary. Metal roofing reflects sunlight, reducing heat gain in summer, and some finishes increase solar reflectance. However, overall performance depends on the full roof assembly: insulation levels, underlayments and ventilation greatly affect heat flow and winter warmth. Calgary’s climate — cold, sunny winters and warm summers — means reflectivity helps in summer while good insulation and airtightness are vital for winter energy savings. Homeowners researching roof replacement consider energy efficiency to lower heating and cooling costs, improve comfort, reduce environmental impact and protect long-term value. When planning a change, evaluate reflectivity, R‑value, ventilation and installation quality. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long-term home performance.
Calgary’s roofs face large hail, high winds, heavy snow and rapid temperature swings—spring/summer hailstorms and winter snow loads can all cause impact, uplift and freeze–thaw damage. Metal roofing can perform very well: standing‑seam and interlocking panels resist wind uplift, shed snow, and—when made from heavier gauges and impact‑rated finishes—offer strong hail resistance; very large hail or poorly detailed edges can still dent or leak. Performance depends on roofing system design (profile, gauge, underlayment), installation quality (fasteners, flashing, attachment) and material durability (coating, warranty). Homeowners prioritise weather resilience to lower repair costs, reduce insurance claims and extend service life. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection and wind resistance when correctly specified and installed.
Metal roofing corrosion and rust resistance depend mainly on the metal type and its protective coatings. Some metals (galvanized steel, zinc and aluminium) and coated steels resist corrosion much better than untreated steel; aluminium performs especially well in wet or coastal environments because it naturally forms a protective oxide layer. In Calgary’s climate—freeze–thaw cycles, snow and road salts—considering corrosion resistance lowers maintenance, extends service life, preserves warranties and resale value, and prevents leaks and staining. Choosing the right metal and coating can mean higher upfront cost but lower lifecycle cost. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction engineered for strong corrosion resistance and are further protected by the Alunar Coating System, which adds a durable barrier against moisture, salts and UV for extra protection.
Metal roofing in Calgary, Alberta is generally low maintenance and long‑lasting, making it a popular choice for local homes. However, no roof is completely maintenance‑free: homeowners should inspect roofs at least once a year and after significant weather events (hail, heavy snow, high winds, freeze–thaw cycles). Remove debris from roof surfaces and valleys, keep gutters clear, and check flashings, sealants and penetrations (vents, chimneys, skylights) for looseness or corrosion. Promptly repair loose fasteners, damaged panels or compromised seals to prevent leaks. Seasonal debris and storm damage can accelerate wear, so timely inspections and minor repairs preserve performance. Overall, metal roofs remain a durable, low‑maintenance option well suited to Calgary’s climate.
In Calgary, metal roofing can increase a home’s value because buyers often prioritise durable, low‑maintenance roofs that stand up to Alberta’s climate. Premium roofing materials also enhance curb appeal, making a property more attractive at listing. The long lifespan of metal roofs improves buyer confidence and can translate to higher offers or faster sales. That said, architectural style matters — a metal roof that complements the neighbourhood’s character and heritage is more likely to add value than an incongruent design. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles — slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam — and are available in heavy‑gauge aluminium and solid copper, giving homeowners durable, attractive options that suit many Calgary streetscapes.
Can solar panels be installed on Interlock Metal Roofing Systems in Calgary? Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar installations when Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd installs custom solar brackets made for their profiles. Calgary roofs must withstand frequent hail, since the city lies in “hail alley.” Freeze–thaw cycles and winter storms also produce ice dams and significant snow loads, so robust flashing, mounts and thermal detailing are important. Interlock systems are designed to support solar mounting solutions and installer coordination helps preserve warranties and seal integrity. Roof lifespan is crucial when adding panels—long‑lasting materials are generally preferred—and homeowners should plan for future solar when replacing a roof.
