Calgary, AB

Jackie K.

After 25 years in our home we realized it was time to replace our roof. Asphalt shingles were always the way to go ..however, we decided to investigate other products. We have always been very interested in a tin roof but were worried it may be too shiny for our home. After thorough research we saw the Interlock product at a home show & became immediately interested in the different styles & colour choices. We set up an appointment in our home with Tyler to have Interlock view our roof line to make sure the slate style look would work. The product is strong, lightweight, tough durable & comes with a 50 year transferable warranty. We were impressed to say the least. Now that our roof is complete (Wow) thanks to the professional installation by Alexis the neighbourhood is abuzz with questions & compliments. It’s beautiful!!! & the Interlock slate style compliments our home. Thank you Tyler for all the information & support in helping us make a rewarding decision. We couldn’t be happier!

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Calgary

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Calgary often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Calgary may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs commonly last 40–70+ years; asphalt shingles typically last about 15–25 years. Calgary’s climate—cold, variable winters with significant snowfall, frequent freeze–thaw cycles, strong Chinook winds and regular hail—affects roof wear and risk of impact, ice formation and wind uplift. Metal roofing performs well here because it resists hail damage and wind uplift better than asphalt, tolerates freeze–thaw without losing protective granules, and sheds snow to reduce load. For these reasons homeowners choose durable metal systems to minimise maintenance and replacement cycles. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy-gauge aluminium and are backed by a lifetime limited 50-year transferable warranty designed for long-term protection.
Metal roofing in Calgary generally costs more upfront than asphalt shingles. Final price depends on roof area, slope and complexity (hips, valleys, dormers), tear‑off and disposal, flashing, skylights, access and labour. Local construction factors — Calgary’s climate, building codes, permit fees and contractor availability — can also affect cost. Many homeowners compare options by lifetime value rather than initial price: metal roofs often last longer, withstand Alberta weather better and need less maintenance, which can reduce future repair and replacement costs. A durable metal system can mean fewer repairs, less frequent replacements and improved resale value over decades. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long‑term ownership value — choosing materials and installation methods that minimise life‑cycle costs — rather than competing as a low‑cost roofing option.
Calgary homeowners face frequent summer hail and rapid freeze–thaw cycles (Chinooks), both of which increase impact damage and thermal stress on roofs. Chinook-driven temperature swings and strong UV also accelerate shingle ageing and material fatigue. Metal vs asphalt shingles: • Lifespan: Metal typically lasts 40–70+ years; asphalt 15–25 years. • Maintenance: Metal needs less routine repair after hail or freeze–thaw; asphalt may require more patching and granule-loss monitoring. • Durability: Metal resists impact, UV and thermal cycling better; asphalt is more vulnerable to hail, wind uplift and rapid temperature swings. • Long-term value: Higher upfront cost for metal but lower replacement frequency and better resale value for homeowners prioritising longevity and protection. Homeowners prioritising durability and long-term protection often choose metal roofing. Interlock Metal Roofing systems appeal because they combine robust weather resistance, long warranties and strong architectural curb appeal for Calgary conditions.
This is a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking do not sound like barn roofs; they sit on the same substrate as other roof types and are quieter than many expect. Sound is influenced by insulation, attic space and the overall roof assembly — more insulation and an enclosed attic reduce rain noise significantly. Installation quality matters: secure fastening, proper underlayment and ventilation all help minimise sound. Properly installed residential metal roofs are typically similar in sound to asphalt, tile or composite roofs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are supplied and installed as complete roofing systems specifically designed for residential homes, incorporating underlayments and details to control noise and performance.
In Calgary, a metal roof can be energy efficient because its reflective surface reduces solar heat gain in summer. However, overall performance depends on the full roof assembly: underlayment, insulation levels and continuous air barrier, plus attic ventilation all influence heat loss and moisture control. Calgary’s climate — cold, long winters with significant heating demand and sunny summers — means reflective benefits help cooling but insulation and airtightness matter most for winter energy savings and preventing ice dams. Homeowners considering roof replacement often prioritise energy efficiency to lower utility bills, improve year‑round comfort, extend roof and home life, and boost resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance by combining durable materials with assemblies that work with insulation and ventilation.
Calgary’s roofs face large hail, severe thunderstorms and strong Chinook and storm winds that can cause concentrated roof damage in short periods. Metal roofing performs well in wind (properly fastened panels resist uplift), sheds rain and snow, and—depending on profile and thickness—can resist hail better than many asphalt shingles. Performance depends on roofing system design, installation quality and material durability. Homeowners weigh weather resilience to lower repair costs, avoid insurance claims and protect long‑term asset value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, enhanced hail protection and wind resistance, but real-world results rely on correct design, certified fastening and experienced installation. Heavy storms with driving rain or ice can expose weak spots; regular inspections after events and proper underlayment, attachment and trim details further improve longevity.
Corrosion (chemical deterioration) and rust resistance in metal roofing depend largely on the metal type and protective coatings. Some metals—like aluminium, copper and stainless steel—form stable surface films or resist oxidation naturally, while ordinary steel needs galvanizing or specialised coatings to prevent rust in wet, freeze–thaw or salt‑exposed conditions. Aluminium performs well in wet or coastal environments because it develops a protective oxide layer that limits further corrosion. Homeowners should prioritise corrosion resistance when selecting roofing to ensure long service life, reduce maintenance, avoid leaks and protect home value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction engineered for strong corrosion resistance and are further protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection.
Metal roofing in Calgary is generally considered low maintenance: durable, long‑lasting, and resistant to rot and insect damage. No roof is completely maintenance‑free, however—periodic inspections are important. Homeowners should check for accumulated debris, clear gutters and downspouts, and inspect flashings and roof penetrations (vents, chimneys, skylights) for sealant wear or movement. After severe weather—heavy snow, ice and freeze–thaw cycles, strong winds or hail—or during seasonal cleanups, inspect more often. Promptly remove loose debris and repair damaged flashings or fasteners to prevent leaks. Overall, metal roofs offer a durable, low‑maintenance option well suited to Calgary’s climate when given simple periodic care.
Yes—metal roofing can increase a Calgary home’s value. Buyers in Calgary often value durable, low‑maintenance roofs that stand up to snow, freeze–thaw cycles and hail; premium materials also enhance curb appeal and make a strong first impression. A long lifespan and transferable warranties improve buyer confidence and can justify a higher asking price. Architectural style and the character of surrounding neighbourhoods matter: an ornate metal profile suits historic areas, while sleek standing seam fits contemporary builds. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles — slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam — and are available in heavy‑gauge aluminium and solid copper, letting homeowners match style, performance and resale expectations.
Yes — Interlock Metal Roofing systems are compatible with solar panels when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. Calgary’s frequent hail and pronounced freeze–thaw cycles plus winter snow loads can stress roofs and mounts, so choose a durable system that minimises maintenance and rework. Roof lifespan is important when adding panels; long‑lasting materials are often preferred because they reduce the need to remove arrays later. If you plan to go solar, tell your contractor when reroofing so brackets, flashings and warranties are coordinated—Interlock systems are designed to support solar mounting solutions. Choosing long‑life metal roofing often reduces lifecycle costs and on‑roof disturbance.
