Review posted September 2019; Roof installed September 2017 in Edmonton Alberta Canada.

I dealt with Derek B who explained the Interlock Metal Roofing materials and technology, their warranty and the training of the installers in person. He sent me aluminum samples in my short list of colors and provided me with addresses of previous customers so I could see examples of their finished roofs near my home. He explained the potential disadvantage of steel roofs versus aluminum roofs and explained all about the membrane that they would apply over the entire roof before putting the aluminum on.

My Black Slate Interlock Metal Roofing aluminum roof was installed in September 2017. I have a typical 2000 square foot 2-storey home with attached garage. While they didn’t promise it would be completed in 1 day it was, which was a nice surprise. The crew was courteous and hardworking. They put a lot of effort into cleaning up the ground/site when the roof was finished. The finished look is outstanding and many people have stopped to inquire about my roof: What was it made of? Who put it on? How long will it last?

One thing I didn’t tell Derek B the Marketing and Special Promotions person for Interlock Metal Roofing [Alberta] was that I got a quote for a metal roof using steel [Decra Metal Shake XD] that was $2000 more than the quote he provided. Getting an aluminum roof instead of steel for less money sealed the deal. My home owner’s insurance premium was reduced after the roof was installed. I would recommend anyone who gets an Interlock Metal Roofing aluminum roof installed to do the same- contact your insurance company and get a lower premium. The transferable warranty is also a major benefit.

Buying an Interlock Metal Roofing aluminum roof was a great decision and I would do it again, no regrets.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Edmonton

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Edmonton often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Edmonton may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

A metal roof in Edmonton commonly lasts 40–70+ years. Asphalt roofs typically have shorter lifespans (commonly 15–25 years), so many homeowners choose metal for long-term performance. Edmonton’s climate — cold, snowy winters with frequent freeze–thaw cycles — stresses roofing materials and can shorten service life if drainage and flashing aren’t correct. The region also sees occasional hail and high winds that favour durable, impact‑resistant systems. Because of heavy snow loads, freeze–thaw cycling and storm risk, homeowners often select metal for low maintenance, better longevity and superior resistance to hail and ice. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy‑gauge aluminium and carry a lifetime limited 50‑year transferable warranty designed for long‑term protection.
Metal roofing in Edmonton typically costs more upfront than asphalt shingles. Final price depends on roof area, pitch and complexity (hips, valleys, dormers), tear‑off requirements, flashing, skylights and labour. Local construction factors—labour rates, material availability, municipal code, snow‑load and ice‑dam mitigation—also influence cost and scheduling in Alberta’s climate. Many homeowners compare roofing options by lifetime value rather than initial price: metal roofs generally offer longer service life, superior resistance to wind, snow and UV, and lower maintenance, which can reduce future repair and replacement costs. A more durable roofing system can limit emergency repairs and delay full replacement, improving long‑term cost efficiency. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on delivering durable systems and long‑term ownership value for Edmonton homeowners rather than competing as a low‑cost roofing option.
Short answer: For many Edmonton homeowners who prioritise durability and long‑term protection, metal roofing is often worth the higher upfront cost, though asphalt shingles remain a more affordable option for tighter budgets. Lifespan: metal 40–70+ years vs asphalt 15–25 years. Maintenance: metal needs occasional seal/fastener checks; asphalt requires more frequent repairs and periodic replacement. Durability: metal sheds heavy snow better and resists damage from repeated freeze–thaw cycles; asphalt can crack, lose granules and age faster in those conditions. Long‑term value: higher initial cost for metal is offset by fewer replacements, lower lifecycle maintenance and often better resale appeal. Local climate note: Edmonton’s long, snowy winters and frequent freeze–thaw transitions increase shingle wear, and Alberta’s hail risk can influence material choice, favouring homeowners who prioritise longevity and protection. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals to those seeking long‑term performance, strong weather resistance and architectural curb appeal.
Are metal roofs noisy when it rains in Edmonton, AB? This is a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking do not sound like barn roofs. Rain noise is influenced by the roof assembly — underlayments, insulation, attic space and ventilation — and a well-designed assembly will dampen sound. Installation quality matters: secure fastening, correct underlay and proper flashings reduce vibration and noise. Properly installed residential metal roofs are typically similar in sound to asphalt shingle, tile or cedar roofs during rainfall. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems designed for residential homes, which helps control sound and overall weather performance.
Metal roofing in Edmonton can be energy efficient because metal panels reflect sunlight, lowering solar heat gain in summer and reducing cooling demand. However, overall performance depends on the whole roof assembly—insulation levels, air sealing and attic ventilation strongly influence heating and cooling loads. Edmonton’s climate (cold winters, warm summers and strong solar radiation) means reflective coatings help in summer, but high‑quality insulation and ventilation are essential to limit winter heat loss. Homeowners researching roof replacement often prioritise energy efficiency to reduce utility bills, improve year‑round comfort, lower greenhouse‑gas emissions and increase resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance through durable materials and assemblies that complement insulation and ventilation strategies.
Edmonton (AB) faces frequent hail, strong winds, severe thunderstorms and heavy snow that stress roofs. Metal roofing can perform very well: when engineered and fastened for local gusts it resists wind uplift; impact-rated gauges and coatings reduce hail damage; smooth metal sheds snow and dries quickly after storms. Performance depends on: – roofing system design (profile, gauge, underlayment); – installation quality (fasteners, flashing, sealed seams); – material durability (steel/aluminium thickness, finish and impact rating). Local climate trends indicate more frequent extreme storms, increasing the value of resilient roofs. Homeowners choose weather-resistant roofs to protect structure, lower repairs and satisfy insurers. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection and wind resistance; confirm specific impact and wind ratings with your installer.
Metal roofing performance depends on the base metal and its coatings. Some materials—such as galvanised steel, stainless steel and aluminium—are inherently more resistant to corrosion than untreated steel. Aluminium performs particularly well in wet or coastal environments because it forms a stable oxide layer that slows further corrosion. Homeowners should consider corrosion resistance when selecting roofing materials to ensure long service life, lower maintenance, and to avoid leaks or premature replacement, especially in Alberta’s variable climate. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems use aluminium construction specifically chosen for strong corrosion resistance. In addition, Interlock panels are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection against weathering and corrosion, helping preserve performance and appearance over time.
Metal roofing is generally considered low maintenance and very durable, making it a strong choice for Edmonton’s climate. However, no roof is completely maintenance‑free. Homeowners should inspect roofs periodically—after storms, heavy snowmelt, or seasonal debris build‑up—and check for accumulated leaves, branches and grit. Gutters and downspouts should be cleared regularly; flashing, sealants and roof penetrations (vents, chimneys, skylights) need inspection for looseness, corrosion or failed seals. Ice dams, wind‑driven debris and hail can cause damage that requires prompt repair. With routine checks and timely attention to debris, drainage and flashing, metal roofs provide long life and lower ongoing labour compared with many other roofing types.
Yes — in Edmonton, a high-quality metal roof can increase a home’s resale appeal and perceived value. Buyers value durable, low-maintenance roofs that reduce future costs; premium materials also boost curb appeal and help a property stand out on the street. A long service life increases buyer confidence and can justify higher offers or faster sale timelines. That said, architectural style matters: a metal roof that suits the neighbourhood’s character and the home’s design will have more impact than one that looks out of place. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles—slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam—available in heavy-gauge aluminium and solid copper, letting you match both aesthetic and performance preferences.
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar panels when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. In Edmonton, heavy snow loads and pronounced freeze–thaw cycles (which can cause ice dams and extra loading) make roof durability and secure mounts especially important. Prioritise roof lifespan when adding solar—long‑lasting materials are preferred to avoid removing panels for early reroofing. If you’re replacing a roof, plan for future solar now so mounts and warranty needs are addressed. Interlock systems are designed to support solar mounting solutions and are a strong choice for Edmonton homeowners comparing roofing options.
