Aurora, ON Metal Roofing: Lifetime Warranty, Raccoon‑Proof & Energy‑Saving

Aurora, ON

Dan S.

We moved into our new house in 1984. Our new house came with new 25 year shingles. In 2004, 20 years later we noticed that our roof shingles needed to be redone. Now, back in 1984 they used asbestos in the roof shingles and although at the time they said they were 25 year shingles, we were still happy to get 20 years out of them. So, in 2004 we got a quote and had the roof re-shingled. We paid extra for the 25 year shingles as we had such a good result with the original shingles. In 2016 (i.e. 12 years later) my neighbour told us that our shingles on the south side of the house were cracked with rolled up edges and needed to be replaced. (We can’t see the south roof of our house unless we are visiting the neighbours.) The shingles on the north side were still ok, but since you can’t really shingle half a roof we knew that we had to have the whole roof done…after just 12 years. We were a little upset about this and decided to go to the National Home Show in Toronto to look at alternatives. We met Tom Watson at the Interlock Metal Roofing booth and he took a lot of time and explained the complete roofing system to us. We liked what we saw and what was explained to us and we arranged to have a home visit from Interlock and to give us a quote. The metal roof was certainly a lot more expensive than a regular asphalt shingle roof, but we decided to get the metal roof anyways because we did not want the hassle of having to re-shingle every 10 or 11 years…and there are also some other unforeseen benefits detailed below that we did not know about at the time. The metal roof comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty, 50 year transferable, not prorated so even though more expensive it adds value to lyour home because if in the future you are looking to sell, the buyer knows he won’t have any roof problems for the 50 year life of the roof. Your roof becomes an asset instead of a liability. The installation happened over 4-5 days. I paid a lot of attention to what they were doing and how they were doing it. The roof vents were removed. These are the same roof vents that raccoons like to rip off for access to your attic, so that potential problem went away. A ridge vent (google it) was installed on the top of the roof and it is low profile and fits in so you would not know that it is there. Raccoons have been known to chew a hole in asphalt shingles and roofing plywood to get into your attic. With a metal roof, it isn’t happening. That mode of access is eliminated. Now, with our previous asphalt shingles we had constant problems with raccoons pooping on our roof (sound familiar?) and for some reason, at least for the last 10 years that we have had the metal roof, that has not happened. I don’t know why, but I can speculate that the raccoons find the metal roof very slippery and they are not comfortable being up there and doing their business while trying not to slide off the roof. Also, in the past we have had squirrels occasionally make their way through, under, beside our asphalt shingles and get into our attic. That will never happen with a metal roof because the whole roof is sealed and northing is getting that way. If you are concerned about high winds ripping off your shingles you don’t have to worry with a metal roof. Each and every metal shingle is fastened to the roof with aluminum screws (note the metal roof shingles are painted and baked to a tough finish) and they are interlocked with each other, so you may lose your entire roof in a hurricane, but the metal shingles will still be attached to it. We moved into our new house in 1984. After about 2 years of sweating through humid summers, we installed an A/C system. Our new A/C system worked ok in that it removed the humidity and cooled the house, but with the high 37 deg C temperatures it was struggling. The A/C would run continuously and never stopped on those hot days, but once the metal roof was installed it cycled on and off as designed. We highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Aurora

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Aurora often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Aurora may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs in Aurora typically last 40–70+ years, while asphalt shingles usually last 15–25 years, so metal is often chosen for longevity and lower long‑term maintenance. Aurora experiences cold, snowy winters with regular freeze–thaw cycles and periodic freezing rain and wind gusts that can stress and abrade roofing materials, and moderate rainfall in warmer months increases moisture exposure—these local conditions tend to shorten asphalt lifespans but are well tolerated by metal roofing. Homeowners in Aurora choose durable systems to resist snow loads, ice‑damming and corrosion and to minimise repairs over decades. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy‑gauge aluminium and carry a lifetime limited 50‑year transferable warranty designed for long‑term protection.
A metal roof in Aurora typically costs more upfront than asphalt shingles, but final price varies a lot with roof size, slope, complexity, tear‑off, flashing, skylights and local labour rates. Durable metal systems can better resist Aurora’s winter snow loads and frequent freeze–thaw cycles (including freezing rain), which stress shingles and flashing. Local precipitation and humidity patterns also affect underlayment choices and ventilation needs, which change installation time and cost. Many homeowners compare lifetime value rather than initial price: a higher upfront cost for metal can reduce future repair and replacement expenses. Interlock Metal Roofing emphasises long‑term ownership value—durability, lower ongoing maintenance and extended warranty—rather than competing solely as the lowest‑cost roofing option.
In Aurora, heavy winter snow loads and frequent freeze–thaw/freezing‑rain events are the local conditions that most affect roofs. Metal roofing typically lasts 40–70+ years versus 15–30 years for asphalt shingles. Maintenance: metal needs occasional inspections and fastener checks; asphalt needs more frequent repairs for curling, granule loss and ice‑dam damage. Durability: metal resists wind uplift, shedding snow and ice, and won’t rot or grow moss like shingles can after wet spells; asphalt is more vulnerable to repeated freeze–thaw cycles and wind-driven granule loss. Long‑term value: higher upfront cost for metal but lower lifecycle costs and fewer replacements; asphalt is cheaper initially but may need replacement sooner. Homeowners who prioritise durability and long‑term protection often choose metal, while those focused on lower initial cost may pick shingles. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals in Aurora because interlocking panels improve watertightness against freezing rain, help shed heavy snow, reduce maintenance and deliver lasting performance and architectural curb appeal.
FAQ — Are metal roofs noisy when it rains in Aurora, ON? Aurora’s climate brings substantial snowfall plus frequent freeze–thaw cycles and occasional freezing rain, which affect roof performance. The idea metal roofs are loud is a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking do not sound like barn roofs. Sound depends on insulation, attic space and the full roof assembly; quality installation, underlayments and vents also matter. Properly installed residential metal roofs typically sound similar to shingles or tiles. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems designed for residential homes, so noise is rarely an issue compared with other materials.
Yes — a metal roof can be energy efficient in Aurora. Metal roofing reflects sunlight, lowering summer heat gain, and when combined with the right roof assembly, air sealing, insulation and attic ventilation it reduces heating and cooling losses. Local climate matters: Aurora has cold, snowy winters with regular freeze–thaw cycles that increase snow loads and ice‑dam risk, which affect insulation and ventilation requirements for peak performance. Seasonal precipitation and temperature swings also influence attic moisture and thermal performance, so reflective metal alone won’t guarantee savings—proper insulation and ventilation are decisive. Homeowners replace roofs for lower energy bills, better comfort and long‑term value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance.
Q: How will a metal roof hold up in Aurora, ON’s severe weather? Aurora experiences cold, snowy winters with significant snowfall and frequent freeze–thaw cycles, and it can see spring/summer hail and windy storm events—conditions that affect roof longevity and performance. Well‑designed metal roofs shed snow, resist ice damage, and—when specified with thicker gauges, impact‑resistant coatings, and secure fastening—offer strong wind uplift resistance and good hail performance. Actual results depend on roofing system design (decking, underlayment, profiles), installation quality (fastening pattern, flashing, seals) and material durability (gauge, finish, impact rating). Homeowners prioritise weather resilience to reduce leaks, ice dams, and storm damage and to lower long‑term repair costs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection and wind resistance, but verify system specs and installer warranty when comparing materials.
Metal roofing corrosion resistance depends on the metal: steel, zinc, copper and aluminium behave differently in moisture and salt exposure. In Aurora, heavy winter snowfall and frequent freeze–thaw and freezing‑rain events increase roof moisture and ice‑melt exposure, accelerating corrosion risk if the material or coating is weak. Aluminium performs very well in wet environments because it forms a protective oxide layer and resists rust; homeowners should prioritise corrosion resistance to cut maintenance, leaks and lifetime costs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction designed for strong corrosion resistance and are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection. When comparing materials, ask about galvanizing, coating thickness and warranties — these greatly affect long‑term performance in snowy, freeze–thaw climates.
Metal roofing is generally low‑maintenance for Aurora, ON, but not maintenance‑free. Expect routine inspections (spring and fall, and after heavy storms) to check for debris, clear gutters, and inspect flashing, fasteners and roof penetrations. Heavy winter snowfall and periodic freeze–thaw and freezing‑rain events in Aurora increase snow loads and risk of ice dams, so timely snow removal and attention to eaves and seals are important. Compared with asphalt shingles, metal’s longevity and resistance to freeze–thaw cycles often makes it a lower‑maintenance choice over the long term. Metal roofs resist moss and rot better than shingles and are highly durable, but seams, coatings and sealants should be checked and touched up as needed to maximise longevity.
Can metal roofing increase my home’s value in Aurora, ON? Yes. Buyers in Aurora value durable, low‑maintenance roofs; premium materials improve curb appeal and a long lifespan increases buyer confidence. Aurora’s winters bring substantial snowfall and frequent freeze–thaw cycles, and spring–summer rainfall with moderate humidity can encourage moss in shaded areas—so buyers favour roofs that resist snow loads, corrosion and biological growth. Compared with asphalt, metal’s longevity and low upkeep often translate to higher perceived value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer profiles that mimic slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam, available in heavy‑gauge aluminium and solid copper. Architectural style matters locally; pick a profile that suits your neighbourhood to maximise resale appeal.
Yes — Interlock Metal Roofing Systems can accept solar panels in Aurora when fitted with custom solar brackets supplied by Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. Aurora’s winters bring regular snowfall and frequent freeze–thaw cycles that increase roof stress and potential corrosion, so mounting details matter for long‑term performance. Roof lifespan is crucial before adding panels — durable, long‑lasting materials are preferred — and homeowners should plan for future solar when reroofing. Interlock systems are solar‑compatible and engineered to support secure mounting solutions with custom brackets.
