Scarborough, ON Metal Roofing Review: Interlock Replaces 22-Year-Old Shingles With Permanent, Low-Maintenance Roof

Scarborough, ON

Viggo D.

The 22 year old shingles were blowing off so instead of re-shingling it was time for something more permanent. Enter Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. Bruce Mehuys came and measured the roof, explained the different options and gave me a quote. Definitively more $$ than shingles. As I believe in quality and low maintenance products this was the way to go. Less than 4 weeks later the materials were ready and Moses and his crew came and went to work. A day and a half later they were finished and cleaned up nicely just as the first raindrops fell. Overall a good experience, a job well done.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Scarborough

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Scarborough often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Scarborough may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs commonly last 40–70+ years, while asphalt shingles typically last 15–25 years. Scarborough’s humid continental climate brings cold, snowy winters with lake‑effect moisture from Lake Ontario and frequent freeze–thaw cycles—conditions that stress roofing materials and promote ice‑damming and moisture exposure. Heavy snow loads and repeated freeze–thaw cycles are the two local factors most likely to reduce roof lifespan; metal roofs shed snow, resist freeze–thaw movement, and tolerate wind and occasional hail better than asphalt, which can crack and age faster under these stresses. Homeowners often choose durable metal systems for long‑term protection and lower maintenance. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy‑gauge aluminium and carry a lifetime limited 50‑year transferable warranty designed for long‑term protection.
Metal roofs typically cost more upfront than asphalt shingles. In Scarborough, ON, final price depends on roof size, slope, complexity (hips, valleys, dormers), tear‑off requirements, flashing and skylight work, and labour. Local construction factors — GTA labour rates, permit costs, seasonal access and disposal fees — can further influence price. Many homeowners compare roofing options based on lifetime value rather than initial price: metal roofing’s durability, warranties, and resistance to ice, wind and corrosion can lower repair and replacement costs over decades. A more durable system may cost more today but reduce lifecycle costs and increase resale appeal. Costs vary widely, so an on‑site measurement and inspection gives the most accurate estimate for your Scarborough home. Seasonal installation windows can affect scheduling and price. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long‑term ownership value, offering durable systems and workmanship rather than competing as a low‑cost option.
Is metal roofing worth it in Scarborough? Short answer: often yes for homeowners prioritizing durability and long‑term protection, but not always if upfront cost is the main concern. Lifespan: metal typically lasts 40–70+ years versus asphalt shingles ~15–25 years. Maintenance: metal needs less upkeep (occasional fastener checks, clearing debris); asphalt needs more patching, moss/algae cleaning and earlier replacement. Durability: metal resists wind, snow and freeze–thaw stress better; asphalt can lose granules, curl and suffer ice‑dam damage. Long‑term value: higher initial cost for metal but lower life‑cycle cost and fewer replacements, improving resale and energy performance. Local weather note: Scarborough’s cold, snowy winters with frequent freeze–thaw cycles and lake‑effect snow/wind can accelerate shingle wear, making metal attractive for longevity and snow‑shedding benefits. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals because panels lock together to resist uplift, shed snow and add lasting architectural curb appeal.
This is a common myth: modern residential metal roofs in Scarborough, ON are not noisy like barn roofs. When metal roofing is installed over solid decking, with appropriate underlayment, insulation and a vented attic space, the sound of rain is similar to other roofing materials. The roof assembly — underlayment, insulation thickness, attic cavity and ceiling finish — all influence acoustics, and a high-quality installation with secure fastening reduces vibration and noise. Conversely, poor installation or unsupported panels can increase sound. Properly installed residential metal roofs are typically comparable in sound to asphalt shingles or tile. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are supplied and installed as complete roofing systems designed for residential homes.
Yes — a metal roof can be energy efficient in Scarborough. Metal roofing often has reflective coatings that reduce solar heat gain in summer, lowering cooling demand, while light-coloured or reflective finishes help reflect sunlight. However, overall performance depends on the complete roof assembly: insulation levels, underlay, and ventilation strongly influence heat flow and seasonal comfort. Scarborough’s hot summers and cold winters mean benefits vary by season; reflective properties help in summer, while proper insulation and air sealing matter in winter. Homeowners replacing roofs consider energy efficiency to reduce utility bills, improve indoor comfort, prolong roof and HVAC life, and minimise environmental impact. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long-term home performance through durable materials and installation-compatible assemblies.
Scarborough, ON, experiences seasonal heavy rain, thunderstorms, occasional hail, strong gusty winds and winter snow/ice—hazards that can stress roofs and cause leaks, hail denting or wind uplift. Metal roofing can perform very well: it sheds rain and snow, resists rot and corrosion, and—when using interlocking profiles, correct fastening and quality installation—offers strong wind-uplift resistance. Impact performance in hail depends on panel gauge, coatings and backing; thin panels may dent from very large hail. Performance always depends on roofing system design, installation quality (including proper underlayment and flashing) and material durability. Homeowners consider weather resilience to reduce storm damage, maintenance costs and insurance claims. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection and wind resistance, combining interlocking profiles, durable coatings and proper fastening to improve long-term performance.
Metal roofing performance depends on the type of metal chosen: some metals corrode faster while others—like stainless steel, aluminium and copper—offer superior corrosion resistance. In wet or coastal environments aluminium performs particularly well because it forms a protective oxide layer and resists salt‑induced deterioration. Homeowners should prioritise corrosion resistance to ensure long service life, lower maintenance, better warranty performance and preserved appearance in harsh climates. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems use aluminium construction designed for strong corrosion resistance and are further protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection against moisture and salt exposure. Choosing a corrosion‑resistant metal roof reduces repair costs and improves resale value, making it a practical, long‑term investment for Scarborough, ON’s climate.
Metal roofing in Scarborough, Ontario is generally considered a low-maintenance, long-lasting option. However, no roof is completely maintenance-free: homeowners should perform periodic inspections—after storms and seasonally—to catch issues early. Remove accumulated leaves and branches, clear and repair gutters, and inspect flashing, sealants and roof penetrations (vents, skylights, chimneys) for corrosion or gaps. Heavy snow, ice, wind or salt spray near busy roads can hasten wear or dislodge fasteners, so check following significant weather events. With routine visual checks and timely minor repairs, metal roofs offer excellent durability and low upkeep for Scarborough homes, often outlasting traditional roofing materials while reducing long-term maintenance and replacement needs.
In Scarborough, ON, a metal roof can increase home value because buyers often prioritise durable, low‑maintenance roofs that lower future repair costs. Premium roofing materials also boost curb appeal, helping properties stand out in competitive neighbourhoods. The long lifespan of metal systems improves buyer confidence, particularly when replacement costs are a concern. Architectural style matters—roofing that suits surrounding homes and neighbourhood character tends to maximise value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles, including slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam, and are available in heavy‑gauge aluminium and solid copper, delivering both aesthetic flexibility and lasting performance. In Scarborough’s diverse communities, a well‑chosen metal roof that complements the street can help homes sell faster and at stronger prices.
Yes — Interlock Metal Roofing systems are compatible with solar in Scarborough when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. Scarborough’s cold, snowy winters with frequent freeze–thaw cycles and Lake Ontario’s moisture/wind can affect snow/ice shedding and mount corrosion, so choose durable, long‑lasting roofing and properly engineered attachments to avoid leaks and ice‑dam issues. Consider roof lifespan before adding panels and plan for solar when replacing a roof—longer‑lasting materials are often preferred. Interlock systems are designed to support solar mounting solutions and can be fitted with custom brackets to protect roof integrity and PV performance. When comparing materials, metal’s longevity often reduces the likelihood of future re‑roofing under panels.
