Portland, OR

TL;DR: Portland Review Summary

Roofing installation in Portland: the homeowner has been very pleased with their roof for about seven years but needed gutter cleaning that was complicated by wet weather making the roof slippery, prompting consideration of safety anchors. They called Interlock; Ivan inspected, identified anchor locations, showed an example, offered to paint them black, returned about a week later to install the anchors, and provided photos—overall professional, prompt, excellent service.

We’ve had our roof for about 7 years and have been very pleased with it. Recently, I scheduled gutter cleaning which was complicated by a run of wet weather which makes the roof very slippery. The gutter contractor asked if we had ever considered installing safety anchors. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I called Interlock and Ivan came by to take a look. He quickly determined appropriate locations for the anchors that the gutter cleaners could clip their safety harnesses to and showed me an example of the anchor itself. He also offered to paint them black to make them more inconspicuous on our dark roof. He returned about a week later for the install and afterwards showed us pictures of the anchors from the roof and pointed them out from the ground. Overall very professional, prompt, excellent service.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Portland

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Portland often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Portland may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs in Portland commonly last 50–75+ years, while asphalt shingles usually need replacement much sooner (often 15–30 years). Portland’s climate—mild, rainy winters with roughly 35–60 inches of precipitation depending on neighborhood and only a few measurable snow days—means long wet seasons that accelerate wear on asphalt and promote biological growth. Wet, shaded roofs in the region are prone to moss and algae, which can trap moisture and shorten shingle life if not managed. That’s why many Portland homeowners choose durable systems like metal: they resist moisture, shed moss easier, handle intermittent freeze-thaw, and require less maintenance over decades. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy-gauge aluminum and a lifetime limited 50-year transferable warranty designed for long-term protection.
Metal roofs in Portland typically cost more up front than asphalt shingles, but total cost varies with roof size, slope, complexity (hips, valleys), tear‑off, flashing, skylights, and local labor and permit rates. Portland’s long, wet winters and persistent humidity encourage moss and algae growth on some roof types, making durable, low‑maintenance materials more valuable locally. Snow load is usually low here, so metal’s advantages are more about moisture resistance, longevity, and reduced maintenance than snow performance. Many homeowners compare lifetime value—longer service life and fewer repairs—rather than only initial price. A more durable roofing system can lower future repair and replacement costs. Interlock Metal Roofing positions its products for long‑term ownership value, not as the lowest‑cost option, emphasizing reduced maintenance and extended service life for Portland conditions.
Portland has cool, wet winters, warm dry summers, about 35–36 inches of annual rain, and only a few inches of snow—conditions that encourage moss and prolonged roof moisture exposure in shady areas. Metal vs. asphalt quick compare for Portland homeowners: – Lifespan: Metal Roofing lasts over 50 years; asphalt shingles typically 20–30 years. – Maintenance: Metal needs less routine moss/rot remediation; asphalt often requires cleaning, spot repairs, and earlier replacement. – Durability: Metal resists moisture, rot and UV better; asphalt is more vulnerable where moss and constant dampness persist. – Long-term value: Higher upfront cost for metal but lower lifecycle costs if you plan to keep the home long-term. Given Portland’s damp winters and moss risk, homeowners prioritizing durability and low maintenance often choose metal. Interlock Metal Roofing systems appeal to those owners because they deliver long-term performance, tight weather protection, and architectural curb appeal.
Portland’s wet, mild climate—about 35–36 in. average annual rain concentrated in fall–winter—plus persistent humidity and shaded, moss‑prone areas can affect roof materials and underlayment performance. The idea that metal roofs are loud in rain is a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking do not sound like barn roofs. Sound levels depend on insulation, attic volume, and the full roof assembly (underlayment, deck, vents), and on installation quality. A properly designed and installed residential metal roof typically sounds comparable to asphalt or tile. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems engineered for homes, addressing weather, sound, and durability.
Yes — a metal roof can be energy efficient in Portland. Metal roofing reflects sunlight, lowering summer heat gain when paired with reflective finishes, but Portland’s mild, relatively dry summers mean cooling savings are smaller than in hotter climates. Winter energy performance depends more on the roof assembly—insulation levels and attic ventilation control heat loss and condensation. Local factors matter: Portland averages about 36 inches of rain annually, with long damp seasons that encourage moss and algae growth, which metal resists better than many shingle surfaces. Snow loads are modest, so insulating and ventilating to prevent freeze–thaw issues is usually sufficient. Homeowners prioritize energy efficiency to lower bills, improve comfort, and future-proof their homes; Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance.
In Portland, persistent winter rain (about 36 inches/year) is a primary factor affecting roofs, and the cool, damp, overcast climate encourages moss growth on shaded surfaces. Metal roofing sheds water well, resists rot and mold, and—when engineered and installed correctly—offers strong wind uplift resistance and good hail performance; thicker gauges, impact-rated coatings, and secure attachment reduce denting and uplift risk. Actual performance depends on roofing system design, installation quality, and material durability. Homeowners weigh weather resilience to minimize leaks, moss-related moisture problems, and storm damage over time. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection, and wind resistance, making them a strong option in Portland’s wet, moss-prone climate when paired with proper design and professional installation.
In Portland’s wet, maritime climate—with heavy seasonal rainfall and persistent humidity that encourage moss growth—corrosion resistance is a key roofing concern. Metal roofing performance depends on the metal: ferrous steels can rust without proper coatings, while non‑ferrous metals resist corrosion better. Aluminum in particular performs well in wet or coastal environments because it forms a stable oxide layer and won’t rust, reducing staining and long‑term degradation. Homeowners should weigh corrosion resistance to minimize maintenance, avoid leak-prone flashing/fastener failures, and extend service life—factors that affect lifetime cost and resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminum construction designed for strong corrosion resistance and are further protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection, making them a practical option for Portland’s damp conditions.
Metal roofing in Portland is generally low‑maintenance and highly durable, resisting rot and moss better than many materials in the region’s long, damp rainy season that encourages moss growth. Still, no roof is maintenance‑free: inspect twice yearly and after storms, clear debris, keep gutters flowing, and check flashing and penetrations for failed seals. Portland’s occasional freeze‑thaw/ice‑dam conditions and heavy seasonal rain can stress seams and fasteners, so recheck after cold snaps and winters. Touch up coatings and tighten or replace fasteners and sealants as needed. Overall, metal is a durable, low‑maintenance option when paired with routine inspections and prompt storm- or debris-related repairs.
Yes — in Portland a metal roof can boost home value. Portland’s cool, wet winters and frequent rainfall create persistent damp and moss growth that shorten the life of some roofing materials, so buyers prioritize durable, low‑maintenance roofs. Metal roofing rates well because it resists rot, sheds heavy rain, and needs less upkeep, which appeals to buyers. Premium materials and attractive profiles improve curb appeal, and a long expected lifespan increases buyer confidence compared with asphalt. Architectural style matters by neighborhood — choose a metal profile that fits the streetscape. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer slate, cedar‑shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake, and standing‑seam looks in heavy‑gauge aluminum and solid copper, allowing both performance and style.
Portland’s frequent rainfall and long damp seasons promote moss growth and extended moisture exposure, which affect roof materials and solar anchoring longevity. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are solar-compatible when fitted with Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc.’s custom solar brackets; they’re designed to support solar mounting solutions. When comparing roofs here, prioritize lifespan—longer-lasting materials reduce the need to remove panels later. If you plan solar in the future, replace the roof with a durable metal system and install solar-ready attachments to avoid rework. Metal’s longevity and resistance to moisture and biological growth make it a preferred choice in Portland’s wet climate.

Interlock Metal Shingle Roof Review in Bay View, WI (Installed 2009)

April 15, 2026

I had Interlock put on a beautiful red slate roof 17 years ago.The roof still looks beautiful. 5 years ago, I had them also re-roof my garage with the same type of slate. The roofs look gorgeous and I have no maintenance whatsoever.I get complements all the time. The guy whom I contracted with was named "Tim' but has since died. He was a really nice guy. Back in 2009, the roof was much cheaper. ( I actually paid more for the garage 5 years ago!) I am extremely happy with the roofs. The guys did a wonderful job, replacing rotted boards where necessary. They also told me about very cheap gutters I could buy at Menards instead of those ridiculously - priced "special" gutter systems. I bought them and they placed them on my buildings. This home will go to my daughter one day; I do not want her to have to lift a finger. Note that I had an asphalt roof previously. It lasted only 12 years. The shingles curled up under the sun and cracked. They looked terrible. I can honestly say that these metals roofs by Interlock are very much worth what you pay for them. They will last a lifetime with almost no maintenance. Instead of replacing a roof every 15 years and paying lots for asphalt or fiberglass, their metal roofs last very long and you will never have to re- roof again.

Interlock Metal Roofing Review in Saint Paul, AB — 50-Year Warranty (Installed 2025)

April 14, 2026

We recently installed a new Interlock Roofing System, and we couldn’t be happier with the decision. Knowing it’s backed by a limited lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable 50-year warranty gives us real peace of mind—it truly feels like a smart long-term investment. Mr. Yorman and his crew were outstanding from start to finish. Their commitment to customer service is second to none. They showed up exactly when they said they would and worked diligently until the job was completed. The finished product looks fantastic, and the cleanup was so thorough that our property actually looked better than before they arrived. A special mention to Tyler, who did an excellent job walking us through the benefits and helping us feel confident in choosing this system. Overall, a great experience and highly recommended!

We installed an Interlock roof in 2017. The roof is still like new. Due to an insulation issue and snow depth of over 4 feet, we had an ice build up problem. Ken, Greg and Cheri provided consultation and prompt service in addressing the addition of snow guards. Their knowledgable and friendly service was greatly appreciated. We highly recommend both the product and the team.

Interlock Metal Roof Review - Burnaby, BC Metal Roofing (Installed 2024)

April 13, 2026

I recently had my 25 year old asphalt roof replaced with an Interlock Metal roof. I'm so very happy with my decision. In fact, best decision ever to have Interlock Industries install. The metal roof is manufactured in Delta, BC and they have their own installers. It's not panels! It looks very much like a cedar roof! Colour is awesome as well! My home is located in Victoria on Vancouver Island and looks great with my new roof! Interlock is a very professional business from contract signing to installation. Amazing crew that gets the job done in a timely manner. My roof looks fabulous. It's a work of art!!

Aurora, ON Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Installation (2016)

April 12, 2026

We moved into our new house in 1984. Our new house came with new 25 year shingles. In 2004, 20 years later we noticed that our roof shingles needed to be redone. Now, back in 1984 they used asbestos in the roof shingles and although at the time they said they were 25 year shingles, we were still happy to get 20 years out of them. So, in 2004 we got a quote and had the roof re-shingled. We paid extra for the 25 year shingles as we had such a good result with the original shingles. In 2016 (i.e. 12 years later) my neighbour told us that our shingles on the south side of the house were cracked with rolled up edges and needed to be replaced. (We can't see the south roof of our house unless we are visiting the neighbours.) The shingles on the north side were still ok, but since you can't really shingle half a roof we knew that we had to have the whole roof done...after just 12 years. We were a little upset about this and decided to go to the National Home Show in Toronto to look at alternatives. We met Tom Watson at the Interlock Metal Roofing booth and he took a lot of time and explained the complete roofing system to us. We liked what we saw and what was explained to us and we arranged to have a home visit from Interlock and to give us a quote. The metal roof was certainly a lot more expensive than a regular asphalt shingle roof, but we decided to get the metal roof anyways because we did not want the hassle of having to re-shingle every 10 or 11 years...and there are also some other unforeseen benefits detailed below that we did not know about at the time. The metal roof comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty, 50 year transferable, not prorated so even though more expensive it adds value to lyour home because if in the future you are looking to sell, the buyer knows he won't have any roof problems for the 50 year life of the roof. Your roof becomes an asset instead of a liability. The installation happened over 4-5 days. I paid a lot of attention to what they were doing and how they were doing it. The roof vents were removed. These are the same roof vents that raccoons like to rip off for access to your attic, so that potential problem went away. A ridge vent (google it) was installed on the top of the roof and it is low profile and fits in so you would not know that it is there. Raccoons have been known to chew a hole in asphalt shingles and roofing plywood to get into your attic. With a metal roof, it isn't happening. That mode of access is eliminated. Now, with our previous asphalt shingles we had constant problems with raccoons pooping on our roof (sound familiar?) and for some reason, at least for the last 10 years that we have had the metal roof, that has not happened. I don't know why, but I can speculate that the raccoons find the metal roof very slippery and they are not comfortable being up there and doing their business while trying not to slide off the roof. Also, in the past we have had squirrels occasionally make their way through, under, beside our asphalt shingles and get into our attic. That will never happen with a metal roof because the whole roof is sealed and northing is getting that way. If you are concerned about high winds ripping off your shingles you don't have to worry with a metal roof. Each and every metal shingle is fastened to the roof with aluminum screws (note the metal roof shingles are painted and baked to a tough finish) and they are interlocked with each other, so you may lose your entire roof in a hurricane, but the metal shingles will still be attached to it. We moved into our new house in 1984. After about 2 years of sweating through humid summers, we installed an A/C system. Our new A/C system worked ok in that it removed the humidity and cooled the house, but with the high 37 deg C temperatures it was struggling. The A/C would run continuously and never stopped on those hot days, but once the metal roof was installed it cycled on and off as designed. We highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing.

Willowbrook, IL Metal Roof Review — Interlock Roofing (Installed 2016)

April 11, 2026

We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
