Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Portland, Oregon
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
We’ve had our roof for about 7 years and have been very pleased with it. Recently, I scheduled gutter cleaning which was complicated by a run of wet weather which makes the roof very slippery. The gutter contractor asked if we had ever considered installing safety anchors. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I called Interlock and Ivan came by to take a look. He quickly determined appropriate locations for the anchors that the gutter cleaners could clip their safety harnesses to and showed me an example of the anchor itself. He also offered to paint them black to make them more inconspicuous on our dark roof. He returned about a week later for the install and afterwards showed us pictures of the anchors from the roof and pointed them out from the ground. Overall very professional, prompt, excellent service.
It was time to replace the old mossy asphalt shingles. Standing seam metal in dark Hunter Green was the way to go. Love it! Demo and install team were friendly really excellent at their jobs.
We love our roof! Interlock was wonderful to work with. Very knowledgable and helpful throughout the whole process. The team that installed were amazing and did amazing work. They cleaned up everything in a timely manner. One feedback I would have is giving more updates on when the project was slated to be started, originally was schedule during our vacation and we didn't know til a few days before we left. Overall we are very please and cant wait to never change our roof again!
Interlock was great. The roof is beautiful and the crew was great to work with. Everyone we met with was kind, skilled and knowledgeable. Mike and Damon even helped us work with insurance some due to a tree falling on our house. Interlock made the overwhelming task of getting a full new roof a little less overwhelming, and we appreciate them so much for that.
Interlock roofing is a fantastic company and the representative, Damon, was incredible. Always there to answer questions in a quick timely manner. I couldn’t be happier. This Aluminum roof will never need to be replaced and it makes my simple home look like a million dollar home. It’s stunning. I chose black slate and it is so beautiful. Such peace of mind too. I would highly recommend this company and its employees. The installation crew were professional and careful and accommodating. Thank You Damon and Interlock Roofing. Love our new roof! We don’t have to worry about replacing it ever again. Positive, Responsiveness, Punctuality, Quality, Professionalism, Services: Roof installation
Beautiful roof, replaced 44-year-old concrete tile. Installers showed up when scheduled, were conscientious and knowledgeable. They were hardworking, even in difficult cold weather. Communication was challenging while waiting our turn, but this was addressed. Ten stars for all of you!PositiveResponsiveness, Punctuality, Quality, Professionalism, ValueServicesRoof installation
My journey with Interlock Roofing began with an email, phone call and some visits with Damon Isbell who is exceptional. He was able to accomadate all my requests for information, as well as make shanges to the project when I wanted to make changes after the initial process. The people I talked with on the phone or via email were pleasant & knowledgable, as was the installation crew led by Victor. I would recommend these people to anyone looking for a lifetime roof. I'd just like to say Thank You to everyone at Interlock Roofing. Everyone I interacted with was pleasant and knowledgeable.
The communication with the salesperson after the sale has been made could have been better, as well as with the installation team prior to the installation. It would have been nice to communicate with the installation manager about the installation before it happened. It would have been nice to have the person in charge check in at some point, and that never happened.
Having more than 1 installer throughout the entire project. Art was great and very safe but if there was an accident or fall and he needed immediate treatment it could have been too late before any one found him. I would feel better and more confident about our Interlock roof if we were given some after installation care FAQ's and a reliable/priority email and/or number to call with any issues. As it is now, I'm not sure who to contact for these things and it makes me worry about having invested in an Interlock roof.
I am very happy with the roof they installed. They should provide more accurate scheduling because my project was delayed for about nine months. We like the product, and everything was great. However, improving the scheduling and making sure the times are more accurate would be better.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Portland
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Portland, Oregon. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Portland.
Can I get a metal roof that looks like slate, cedar shake, or tile in Portland?
Yes—Interlock offers five profile options: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Standing Seam, and Mediterranean Tile, each cast from roofing-grade aluminum. The profiles deliver authentic dimensional appearance while weighing about 96% less than genuine tile or slate. With Portland's 1468 mm of annual rainfall and freeze-thaw cycling (36 days/year), aluminum's non-rusting oxide layer and four-way interlocking design provide durability that wood or clay cannot match. Your choice of style carries the same performance warranty and ice-dam resistance.
Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?
Metal roofing costs more initially but performs as your last roof; asphalt typically requires replacement every 15–25 years. Over a 50-year lifespan, you'll replace asphalt 2–3 times—material, labor, and landfill disposal each time. Interlock's lifetime limited Guardian Warranty covers material defects (rusting, cracking, curling, impact loss), transferable for 50 years to the next owner. Portland's 48 cm annual snowfall and 116 km/h wind gusts stress asphalt faster; aluminum's Class 4 hail rating and 120 mph wind warranty mean fewer claim denials. Total cost of ownership favors metal by thousands over five decades.
How long does an Interlock metal roof last, and what does the warranty cover?
Interlock roofs are designed to outlast your home; the Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited for the original owner—non-prorated for material defects including rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of hail impact resistance. It transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion. The Alunar coating itself carries a separate 30-year warranty against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214/D2244 testing). In Portland's climate of 36 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 2957 sunshine hours, aluminum's self-healing oxide layer resists both thermal cycling and UV degradation far longer than asphalt or wood.
Why does aluminum resist rust better than steel roofing in Portland's wet climate?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron; when its oxide surface is scratched, the layer self-heals chemically. Steel roofing, by contrast, rusts when exposed to moisture—a critical difference in Portland's 1468 mm of annual rain. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish applied to both sides, providing extra salt-air protection even if you're near the coast. This dual-coat system and material composition mean no rust perforation, no degradation from freeze-thaw cycles, and no maintenance to prevent corrosion.
Is a metal roof fire-safe? Does it affect my homeowner's insurance?
Interlock aluminum is non-combustible and available with Class A fire classification—the highest rating. Aluminum itself cannot ignite; it will not support flame spread, smoke development, or flaming particles. This meets ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 and CALGreen verification requirements. In Portland, where wildfire risk is monitored regionally and freeze-thaw cycles can stress roofing integrity, a Class A-rated metal roof signals to insurers that your home has superior fire protection. Some homeowners report insurance premium reductions; contact your agent with the Class A specification for a quote adjustment.
How much upkeep does a metal roof require compared to asphalt or wood?
Metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance; aluminum panels do not rot, split, curl, or accumulate moss the way asphalt and cedar do in Portland's 1468 mm of annual rain and 36 freeze-thaw days. Unlike wood shake, it will not invite mold or wood-eating insects. Unlike asphalt, it sheds debris cleanly and does not degrade from UV or temperature swings. The Guardian Warranty covers material defects with no maintenance obligations to void coverage. A simple annual visual inspection (gutters, flashing, snow guards if installed) keeps your roof performing at design specifications—far less labor than asphalt maintenance or wood refinishing.
Will a metal roof increase my home's resale value in Portland?
A metal roof signals durability and low future maintenance to buyers, particularly in a city experiencing 48 cm annual snowfall and 116 km/h gusts—conditions that stress asphalt and wood. The aesthetic variety (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Tile, Standing Seam profiles) allows you to choose a look that complements your neighborhood. The one-time transferable Guardian Warranty (50 years to the next owner) is a significant selling point; the next owner inherits material coverage at no cost. Homes with metal roofs in comparable climates typically command higher asking prices and shorter time-on-market because buyers perceive lower ownership risk and fewer surprise repairs.
How long does installation take, and can you install over my existing asphalt roof?
Installation timeline depends on roof size and complexity, typically 3–7 days for a standard residential roof. Yes, Interlock installs over existing asphalt because aluminum panels weigh extraordinarily little—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at approximately 0.59 lb/sq ft, about 96% lighter than concrete tile—eliminating the need for structural reinforcement. This saves labor and cost compared to tear-off projects that generate landfill waste. Your existing roof stays in place as substrate and added insulation. Portland's 48 cm annual snowfall means a lighter profile reduces snow load stress on your structure. Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc. has served the region since 1997; they manage permitting and scheduling to minimize disruption.
Is metal roofing more environmentally responsible than asphalt shingles?
Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end-of-life; a metal roof ends the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle repeated every 15–25 years. Over five decades in Portland, you'd otherwise discard 150+ squares of asphalt and felt—significant landfill burden. Interlock's aluminum is manufactured in Delta, BC, from responsibly sourced material and finished with Alunar PVDF coating; the material itself and the coating are recyclable. The roof's longevity (lifetime for the original owner) extends the interval between replacements, reducing total material consumption. If you prioritize environmental footprint, metal roofing cuts waste per year of service life compared to any asphalt or wood alternative.
Is a metal roof loud when it rains?
No. Interlock panels install over a solid deck and 1.5-inch underlayment, creating a sound-dampening barrier that keeps rain noise at asphalt-roof levels—not the loud pinging of exposed metal. The four-way interlocking design also minimizes vibration. In Portland, where 1468 mm of annual rainfall occurs across ~170 rainy days, sound isolation matters for comfort. The combination of panel thickness, interlocking geometry, and required underlayment ensures that a metal roof is acoustically similar to conventional roofing. You'll hear rain much less than you'd expect from a metal surface.
Is a metal roof a good choice for Portland’s climate?
Yes. Portland averages about 48 cm of snow, 1468 mm of rain, roughly 36 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 116 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
