Environmental Claims & Substantiation

Interlock Roofing Ltd.

TL;DR – Environmental Claims & Evidence

When we say an Interlock® roof is recyclable, energy-efficient, or built to be the last roof you’ll ever need, we mean something specific and testable. This page identifies each environmental claim we make, the evidence and recognized standards behind it, and what we deliberately do not claim. Substantiation documents are available on request at [email protected].

1. Why This Page Exists

Environmental marketing claims are regulated in both of our countries — in Canada under the Competition Act’s environmental-claims provisions (as amended in 2024), which require product claims to be based on adequate and proper testing and business claims to be substantiated using internationally recognized methodologies, and in the United States under the FTC Act and the FTC’s Green Guides.

We support those standards. This page connects each environmental statement in our marketing to the evidence it rests on, so you — or any regulator or competitor — can check our work.

2. Aluminum Recyclability

Claim: Interlock® roofing panels are recyclable.

Basis: Interlock roofing systems are manufactured from aluminum. Aluminum is recyclable at end of life through established scrap-metal recycling streams available throughout North America, and can be recycled repeatedly without loss of material quality. At the end of an Interlock roof’s service life, the panels can enter the same commodity aluminum recycling stream as other aluminum products.

3. Recycled Content

Claim: Interlock® panels are manufactured using recycled aluminum.

Basis: Our aluminum coil stock incorporates recycled content consistent with the North American aluminum sheet supply. Current mill certifications and recycled-content documentation for the coil stock in production are maintained by I.E.L. Manufacturing Ltd. and are available on request. Where we state a specific recycled-content percentage in marketing, that figure is taken from the supplier documentation current at the time of publication.

4. Energy Efficiency & Cool Roofing

Claim: Interlock® roofs can reduce summer cooling load compared to dark conventional roofing.

Basis: Interlock panels are finished with the Alunar® coating system. Solar reflectance and thermal emittance for rated colours are measured under the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) product rating program, and those ratings are published in the public CRRC Rated Products Directory. Actual energy savings depend on climate, building design, insulation, ventilation, and colour selection — which is why we do not promise a specific dollar or percentage saving for your home.

5. Longevity as Sustainability

Claim: A lifetime roof is a lower-waste roof.

Basis: The Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the original purchaser for as long as they own their home. A roof engineered and warranted to this standard displaces the repeated tear-off and disposal cycle of shorter-lived roofing: every conventional re-roof avoided is roofing material that never enters a landfill. This is a durability-based comparison, not a claim that any roofing product is impact-free to manufacture.

6. Certifications & Testing

Independent evaluations and listings that stand behind our product claims include:

  • ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-1790 (code compliance evaluation)
  • UL 2218 Class 4 impact-resistance rating
  • CCMC (Canadian Construction Materials Centre) evaluation
  • Florida Product Approval
  • Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) product ratings
  • Alunar® coating performance warranted against chalking beyond ASTM D4214 rating 8 and colour change beyond 5 Hunter ΔE units per ASTM D2244

Copies of current evaluation reports are available via our Testing Reports resources or on request.

7. What We Do Not Claim

We avoid environmental buzzwords we cannot measure. We do not claim that our products or business are “carbon neutral,” “climate positive,” or generically “eco-friendly”; we do not claim our manufacturing is impact-free; and we do not make environmental claims about our business activities as a whole unless they can be substantiated under an internationally recognized methodology. If you find an environmental statement in our marketing that does not trace back to this page, tell us — we will substantiate it or remove it.

8. Standards & Methodologies

Where our claims rest on measurement, the measurements follow recognized standards: CRRC product rating program procedures for solar reflectance and thermal emittance; ASTM D4214 (chalking) and ASTM D2244 (colour change) for coating performance; UL 2218 for impact resistance; and the evaluation criteria applied in ICC-ES and CCMC reports. Claims about recyclability and recycled content rest on the documented properties of aluminum and on supplier mill documentation.
