Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Redmond

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Redmond often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Redmond may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs in Redmond commonly last at least 50–75+ years; asphalt shingles generally last 15–30 years. Redmond’s temperate, wet Pacific Northwest climate—about 40–44 inches of annual rain and only light snowfall—creates persistent moisture and high humidity that promote moss growth and biological staining, while freeze–thaw cycles are relatively mild compared with inland cold climates. Occasional wind storms and light snow loads mean roofs need good water-shedding, corrosion resistance, and secure fastening rather than heavy structural snow capacity. Because metal resists water penetration, sheds rain and snow, and discourages moss buildup, homeowners choose it for lower maintenance, better wind/rain performance, energy benefits, and longer service life with lower life‑cycle costs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy‑gauge aluminum and come with a lifetime limited 50‑year transferable warranty designed for long‑term protection.
In Redmond, WA, a metal roof typically costs more upfront than asphalt shingles. Exact price depends on roof size, slope and complexity, whether old roofing is torn off, flashing and skylight work, and local labor rates. Local construction factors—permit fees, building-code requirements, seasonal labor availability, and Pacific Northwest weather considerations (rain, wind, occasional snow)—can also influence cost. Many homeowners evaluate roofing options by lifetime value rather than initial price: metal roofs often have higher durability, longer warranties, and lower maintenance, which can reduce future repair and replacement costs. A more durable system can mean fewer leaks, less frequent re-roofing, and better long-term protection for your home. Interlock Metal Roofing emphasizes long-term ownership value and performance rather than competing as the lowest-cost roofing option.
Short answer: In Redmond, metal roofing is often worth the extra upfront cost for homeowners prioritizing durability and long-term protection, but shingles remain a cost-effective choice for lower initial budgets. Lifespan: Asphalt shingles typically last 15–30 years in the Pacific Northwest; metal roofs commonly last 40–70 years. Maintenance: Shingles require periodic moss/algae cleaning and spot repairs; metal needs less upkeep and resists biological growth. Durability: Metal better resists wind uplift, heavy rain, and occasional hail; shingles can degrade faster in persistently damp, shaded conditions. Long-term value: Higher initial cost for metal is offset by longer service life, fewer replacements, and resale appeal. Redmond’s wet, mild climate with frequent fall–winter rain and high humidity promotes moss on shaded roofs, making low‑maintenance, watertight systems more attractive. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals because interlocking panels shed water, limit moss buildup, and deliver long-term performance and architectural curb appeal.
This is a common myth: modern residential metal roofs are not the loud, hollow-sounding barn roofs many imagine. When installed over solid decking, with proper underlayment, insulation and an attic cavity, metal roofing’s rain noise is comparable to asphalt shingles or tile. Sound depends on the complete roof assembly—insulation, underlayment, ventilation and attic space all dampen impact noise—so a well-designed assembly reduces perceived sound. Installation quality matters: secure fastening, continuous decking and correct underlayment prevent flapping or amplified noise. Properly installed residential metal roofs are typically similar in sound to other roofing materials. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete residential roofing systems engineered for homes.
In Redmond, WA, a metal roof can be energy efficient because metal roofing often reflects sunlight and reduces solar heat gain, especially during summer. However, overall energy performance depends on the full roof assembly — underlayment, insulation levels, and attic ventilation all influence heat transfer and moisture control. In Redmond’s temperate, maritime climate with mild summers and wet winters, reflective coatings may yield modest cooling savings while insulation and ventilation drive year‑round comfort and condensation prevention. Homeowners researching roof replacement frequently weigh energy efficiency to lower utility bills, improve indoor comfort, reduce HVAC wear, and qualify for incentives or higher resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered to work with proper assemblies to support long‑term home performance.
Redmond commonly faces heavy rain, windstorms, occasional hail, and winter snow/ice that stress roofs and can cause wind-driven damage or ponding. Wind gusts in the area can reach 40–50 mph during storms, increasing uplift and debris‑impact risk. Metal roofing performs well in severe weather: interlocking panels resist uplift, smooth metal sheds rain and snow to reduce leaks, and heavier gauges or impact‑rated finishes improve hail resistance. Performance depends on roofing system design (profile, seams, attachments), installation quality (flashing, underlayment, fastening), and material durability (gauge, coatings). Homeowners prioritize weather resilience to protect the structure, lower repair and insurance costs, and extend roof life. Regular maintenance and correct fastening to code further preserve performance. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection, and wind resistance.
Corrosion and rust resistance in metal roofing depend largely on the metal used. Some metals (like uncoated steel) are more prone to rust, while others—especially aluminum and copper—offer much greater natural resistance. Aluminum performs particularly well in wet or coastal environments because it forms a stable oxide layer that protects the underlying metal. Homeowners in Redmond, WA should consider corrosion resistance to maximize roof lifespan, reduce maintenance, preserve appearance, and avoid costly repairs from leaks or structural damage caused by corrosion. Choosing a corrosion-resistant material also improves long-term value and can lower life-cycle costs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminum construction designed for strong corrosion resistance, making them a good option for the damp Pacific Northwest climate.
Metal roofing in Redmond, Washington is generally low maintenance thanks to durable coatings and interlocking panels. That said, no roof is completely maintenance-free: periodic inspections—after storms and seasonally—are important. Homeowners should check for accumulated debris (leaves, needles), clear gutters, inspect flashings, sealants, fasteners and roof penetrations (vents, skylights, chimneys) and watch for loose or damaged panels. Winter rain, wind, falling branches and spring/summer moss or sap can accelerate wear or block drainage. With proper seasonal checks and prompt attention to issues, metal roofs offer a long-lasting, weather-resistant, low-maintenance option well suited to Redmond’s wet climate. Consider a professional inspection every few years to catch hidden problems early.
Metal roofing can increase a Redmond, WA home’s appeal and perceived value. Homebuyers tend to prioritize durable, low-maintenance roofs—qualities that reduce future repair concerns—while premium roofing materials boost curb appeal in tech‑savvy, higher‑value neighborhoods. A long lifespan also improves buyer confidence, especially where Seattle‑area weather stresses roofs. Architectural style matters: a metal roof that complements the neighborhood’s character preserves value, while a mismatch can detract. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles—slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake, and standing seam—available in heavy‑gauge aluminum and solid copper, letting homeowners match regional styles without sacrificing performance. Overall, properly selected and installed metal roofing in Redmond is likely to be viewed as a value‑adding investment by buyers.
In Redmond, WA, frequent rain and year‑round humidity encourage moss growth and longer wetting periods; occasional freeze‑thaw events and seasonal wind can also stress roofing. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are solar compatible—Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc. installs custom solar brackets engineered for their profiles. Because PV arrays last decades, roof lifespan matters: installing panels on a long‑lasting roof avoids costly panel removal. When replacing a roof, plan for future solar and favor durable materials (metal or tile) that simplify mounting. Interlock systems are designed to support solar mounting solutions and are often preferred in Redmond’s wet, moss‑prone climate.

I’ve had my interlock roof for 14 yrs and have had no issues with it until this last winter. We had heavier than normal snow and a lot of freeze thaw conditions. Several of the snow deflectors were pushed forward and lifted some of the roof. I emailed Dave and Tyler and repairs were made quickly . You can’t tell there was any concerns at all.

Metal Shingle Roof Review in Sudbury, ON (Interlock - Installed 2017)

Review: April 25, 2026

Completion: June 7, 2018

We had our roof replaced in 2017 with an aluminum roof by Interlock Metal Roofing. We live on the lake, and prior to the replacement, we were spending thousands of dollars every year because shingles would fly off in the wind.

We haven’t had any issues in the past 7 years. Our experience with Interlock Metal Roofing was excellent — they were very professional and did a beautiful job, even though our roof is quite high and challenging.

Our roof still looks beautiful, and we haven’t had to worry about it at all in the past 9 years.

I love my Interlock roof! No more climbing up to clean it, and no more gritty debris falling into my garden after a few years. It looks fantastic and performs exactly as it should.

The installers were excellent—knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and personable. Ivan is a gem! He handled a small flashing addition efficiently and cleaned the entire roof with a blower in no time.

After almost ten years, it’s still the only roof I would choose.

Interlock Metal Roof Review - Ramara, ON (Installed 2019)

Completion: April 23, 2026

We are so happy with our interlock roof from Bruce. We had shopped around because we live on the lake with strong winds and we wanted a quality, long lasting product. Our roof has never changed colour and looks just as good now as the day it was installed. We also love the lifetime transferable warranty. We also love that it is made in Canada so there are no tariffs. Bruce was our sales person. He came right away, explained everything to us. We made the right decision not choosing shingles because of the environment and quality of the product. This was an affordable investment that was worth it. The crew was professional in every aspect. If I move, I will definitely be contacting Bruce again for another interlock roof.

Portland, OR Metal Shingles Review — Safety Anchors Installed 2019

Review: April 20, 2026

Completion: June 20, 2019

We’ve had our roof for about 7 years and have been very pleased with it. Recently, I scheduled gutter cleaning which was complicated by a run of wet weather which makes the roof very slippery. The gutter contractor asked if we had ever considered installing safety anchors. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I called Interlock and Ivan came by to take a look. He quickly determined appropriate locations for the anchors that the gutter cleaners could clip their safety harnesses to and showed me an example of the anchor itself. He also offered to paint them black to make them more inconspicuous on our dark roof. He returned about a week later for the install and afterwards showed us pictures of the anchors from the roof and pointed them out from the ground. Overall very professional, prompt, excellent service.

Interlock Metal Shingle Roof Review in Bay View, WI (Installed 2009)

Review: April 16, 2026

Completion: February 20, 2009

I had Interlock put on a beautiful red slate roof 17 years ago.The roof still looks beautiful. 5 years ago, I had them also re-roof my garage with the same type of slate. The roofs look gorgeous and I have no maintenance whatsoever.I get complements all the time. The guy whom I contracted with was named "Tim' but has since died. He was a really nice guy. Back in 2009, the roof was much cheaper. ( I actually paid more for the garage 5 years ago!) I am extremely happy with the roofs. The guys did a wonderful job, replacing rotted boards where necessary. They also told me about very cheap gutters I could buy at Menards instead of those ridiculously - priced "special" gutter systems. I bought them and they placed them on my buildings. This home will go to my daughter one day; I do not want her to have to lift a finger. Note that I had an asphalt roof previously. It lasted only 12 years. The shingles curled up under the sun and cracked. They looked terrible. I can honestly say that these metals roofs by Interlock are very much worth what you pay for them. They will last a lifetime with almost no maintenance. Instead of replacing a roof every 15 years and paying lots for asphalt or fiberglass, their metal roofs last very long and you will never have to re- roof again.

Interlock Metal Roofing Review in Saint Paul, AB — 50-Year Warranty (Installed 2025)

Review: April 15, 2026

Completion: August 31, 2025

We recently installed a new Interlock Roofing System, and we couldn’t be happier with the decision. Knowing it’s backed by a limited lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable 50-year warranty gives us real peace of mind—it truly feels like a smart long-term investment. Mr. Yorman and his crew were outstanding from start to finish. Their commitment to customer service is second to none. They showed up exactly when they said they would and worked diligently until the job was completed. The finished product looks fantastic, and the cleanup was so thorough that our property actually looked better than before they arrived. A special mention to Tyler, who did an excellent job walking us through the benefits and helping us feel confident in choosing this system. Overall, a great experience and highly recommended!

I recently had my 25 year old asphalt roof replaced with an Interlock Metal roof. I'm so very happy with my decision. In fact, best decision ever to have Interlock Industries install. The metal roof is manufactured in Delta, BC and they have their own installers. It's not panels! It looks very much like a cedar roof! Colour is awesome as well! My home is located in Victoria on Vancouver Island and looks great with my new roof! Interlock is a very professional business from contract signing to installation. Amazing crew that gets the job done in a timely manner. My roof looks fabulous. It's a work of art!!

Aurora, ON Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Installation (2016)

Review: April 13, 2026

Completion: May 3, 2016

We moved into our new house in 1984. Our new house came with new 25 year shingles. In 2004, 20 years later we noticed that our roof shingles needed to be redone. Now, back in 1984 they used asbestos in the roof shingles and although at the time they said they were 25 year shingles, we were still happy to get 20 years out of them. So, in 2004 we got a quote and had the roof re-shingled. We paid extra for the 25 year shingles as we had such a good result with the original shingles. In 2016 (i.e. 12 years later) my neighbour told us that our shingles on the south side of the house were cracked with rolled up edges and needed to be replaced. (We can't see the south roof of our house unless we are visiting the neighbours.) The shingles on the north side were still ok, but since you can't really shingle half a roof we knew that we had to have the whole roof done...after just 12 years. We were a little upset about this and decided to go to the National Home Show in Toronto to look at alternatives. We met Tom Watson at the Interlock Metal Roofing booth and he took a lot of time and explained the complete roofing system to us. We liked what we saw and what was explained to us and we arranged to have a home visit from Interlock and to give us a quote. The metal roof was certainly a lot more expensive than a regular asphalt shingle roof, but we decided to get the metal roof anyways because we did not want the hassle of having to re-shingle every 10 or 11 years...and there are also some other unforeseen benefits detailed below that we did not know about at the time. The metal roof comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty, 50 year transferable, not prorated so even though more expensive it adds value to lyour home because if in the future you are looking to sell, the buyer knows he won't have any roof problems for the 50 year life of the roof. Your roof becomes an asset instead of a liability. The installation happened over 4-5 days. I paid a lot of attention to what they were doing and how they were doing it. The roof vents were removed. These are the same roof vents that raccoons like to rip off for access to your attic, so that potential problem went away. A ridge vent (google it) was installed on the top of the roof and it is low profile and fits in so you would not know that it is there. Raccoons have been known to chew a hole in asphalt shingles and roofing plywood to get into your attic. With a metal roof, it isn't happening. That mode of access is eliminated. Now, with our previous asphalt shingles we had constant problems with raccoons pooping on our roof (sound familiar?) and for some reason, at least for the last 10 years that we have had the metal roof, that has not happened. I don't know why, but I can speculate that the raccoons find the metal roof very slippery and they are not comfortable being up there and doing their business while trying not to slide off the roof. Also, in the past we have had squirrels occasionally make their way through, under, beside our asphalt shingles and get into our attic. That will never happen with a metal roof because the whole roof is sealed and northing is getting that way. If you are concerned about high winds ripping off your shingles you don't have to worry with a metal roof. Each and every metal shingle is fastened to the roof with aluminum screws (note the metal roof shingles are painted and baked to a tough finish) and they are interlocked with each other, so you may lose your entire roof in a hurricane, but the metal shingles will still be attached to it. We moved into our new house in 1984. After about 2 years of sweating through humid summers, we installed an A/C system. Our new A/C system worked ok in that it removed the humidity and cooled the house, but with the high 37 deg C temperatures it was struggling. The A/C would run continuously and never stopped on those hot days, but once the metal roof was installed it cycled on and off as designed. We highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing.

We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
