Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Spruce Grove

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Spruce Grove often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Spruce Grove may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs in Spruce Grove commonly last at least 50–75+ years, while asphalt shingles typically last much shorter (often 15–25 years), so homeowners often choose metal for longevity. Spruce Grove has cold, snowy winters with regular snow loads and freeze–thaw cycles and warm summers with occasional hail and strong winds—conditions that accelerate wear on asphalt but that metal handles well because it sheds snow, resists splitting from freeze–thaw, and withstands wind and impact better than organic shingles. For those reasons, homeowners in the area often invest in more durable systems for long-term protection. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy-gauge aluminium and carry a lifetime limited 50-year transferable warranty designed for long-term protection.
Metal roofs in Spruce Grove, AB typically cost more upfront than asphalt shingles. Final price varies with roof size, slope and pitch, complexity, number of layers to tear off, flashing and skylight work, and local labour rates. Local construction factors—seasonal labour availability, permit requirements and supply costs—also affect pricing. Many homeowners compare options by lifetime value rather than initial sticker price: metal roofing generally lasts longer, resists weather better and can lower repair and replacement expenses over decades. A durable metal system can reduce ongoing maintenance, insurance impacts and eventual reroofing costs. Exact costs should be confirmed with a local contractor familiar with Spruce Grove building codes and climate. Many metal systems include long warranties that further improve lifetime value. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long‑term ownership value, offering durable systems designed to minimise lifetime costs rather than competing solely as the lowest‑priced option.
In Spruce Grove’s cold, snowy climate with frequent freeze–thaw cycles and occasional hail and wind events, metal roofing and asphalt shingles perform differently. Spruce Grove has long, cold winters and notable precipitation patterns that drive freeze–thaw and ice risks. Lifespan: metal typically lasts 40–70+ years; asphalt shingles about 15–25 years. Maintenance: metal needs less routine repair and resists granule loss; shingles require more inspections, replacement of damaged areas and attention to ice damming. Durability: metal resists heavy snow loads, freeze–thaw movement, and hail better; shingles are more vulnerable to curling, cracking and hail scuffs. Long-term value: higher upfront cost for metal often pays off via longer service life, lower maintenance and stronger resale. Homeowners who prioritise durability and long-term protection often choose metal. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals for its interlocking panels, strong weather resistance, clean architectural curb appeal and long-term performance.
This is a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking do not sound like barn roofs; they sit on continuous sheathing which greatly reduces noise. Sound during rain depends on insulation, attic space, underlayment and the overall roof assembly—added insulation and an air gap or acoustic underlayments further dampen rain noise. Installation quality matters: fastener placement, secure flashings and correct underlayment prevent vibration and rattling. Properly installed residential metal roofs are typically similar in sound to other roofing materials such as asphalt shingles or tile. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems designed specifically for residential homes, with components chosen to control weather and acoustic performance.
Yes. In Spruce Grove, AB, a metal roof can be energy efficient. Metal roofing reflects sunlight and reduces solar heat gain in summer, and with appropriate coatings can lower cooling loads. However, overall energy performance depends on the whole roof assembly: underlayment, insulation levels and ventilation are critical to reducing heat loss in winter and preventing heat buildup in summer. Local climate matters—Spruce Grove’s cold winters and warm summers mean reflective benefits may be seasonal, while insulation and air‑sealing drive winter savings. Homeowners replacing a roof often prioritise energy efficiency to lower utility bills, improve comfort and extend the roof’s lifespan, which supports resale value and long‑term costs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance.
Spruce Grove, AB regularly faces severe thunderstorms, strong winds and occasional large hail—reports record hail in the area as large as 80–120 mm (grapefruit‑sized) that can shatter shingles and skylights. Environment Canada notes severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and wind are common Alberta hazards that threaten roofs. Local reports of windstorm roof damage in Spruce Grove underline exposure to wind uplift risk. Metal roofing can perform very well in wind, hail and heavy weather when the system is properly designed and installed: it sheds water, resists uplift and—depending on gauge and finish—offers strong hail resistance. Performance depends on roofing system design, installation quality and material durability. Homeowners consider weather resilience to protect structure, reduce repair costs and satisfy insurers. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection and wind resistance.
Metal roofing performance depends on the metal chosen: steel, zinc, copper and aluminium behave differently with respect to corrosion. Some materials (for example stainless steel, copper and aluminium) are inherently more corrosion-resistant, while untreated carbon steel relies on protective coatings that can wear. Aluminium performs particularly well in wet or coastal environments because it forms a stable oxide layer that limits corrosion and reduces maintenance. In Spruce Grove, AB, seasonal snow, freeze–thaw cycles and road‑salt exposure make corrosion resistance especially important. Homeowners should prioritise corrosion resistance to extend roof life, avoid leaks and staining, lower repair and replacement costs, and protect warranties and property value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction engineered for strong corrosion resistance and are finished with the Alunar Coating System for extra protection.
Metal roofing in Spruce Grove, Alberta, is generally considered a low‑maintenance choice thanks to its durability and resistance to rot and insects. That said, no roof is completely maintenance‑free. Homeowners should inspect their metal roof periodically—after major storms and seasonally—for loose debris, damaged gutters, worn or loose flashing, and compromised penetrations (vents, chimneys, skylights). Clear accumulated branches, leaves, and ice to prevent trapped moisture or gutter blockages. Heavy weather events, freeze–thaw cycles and seasonal debris can increase wear or cause isolated damage, so prompt repair limits problems. Overall, metal remains a long‑lasting, low‑maintenance roofing option well suited to Spruce Grove’s climate.
Yes — in Spruce Grove, AB, metal roofing can increase home value. Buyers often prioritise durable, low‑maintenance roofs, so a metal roof can be a selling advantage. Premium roofing materials also boost curb appeal, making homes stand out in competitive neighbourhoods. The long lifespan of metal roofing improves buyer confidence by reducing perceived near‑term repair costs. That said, architectural style and neighbourhood character matter: metal with a profile and finish that complements local homes will add more value than an incompatible look. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles—slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam—available in heavy‑gauge aluminium and solid copper, allowing homeowners to match traditional or contemporary styles while delivering durability and low maintenance.
Yes—Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar panels when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. In Spruce Grove, heavy winter snow loads and frequent freeze–thaw cycles affect roof performance, so choose a roof with long service life before adding panels. Solar arrays add weight and complicate future reroofing, so homeowners should factor planned solar installation into roof replacement decisions. Long‑lasting materials—such as Interlock’s metal systems—are often preferred because they reduce the likelihood of removing panels for roof work. Interlock systems are solar‑compatible and designed to support secure mounting solutions for local climate demands.

I’ve had my interlock roof for 14 yrs and have had no issues with it until this last winter. We had heavier than normal snow and a lot of freeze thaw conditions. Several of the snow deflectors were pushed forward and lifted some of the roof. I emailed Dave and Tyler and repairs were made quickly . You can’t tell there was any concerns at all.

Metal Shingle Roof Review in Sudbury, ON (Interlock - Installed 2017)

Review: April 25, 2026

Completion: June 7, 2018

We had our roof replaced in 2017 with an aluminum roof by Interlock Metal Roofing. We live on the lake, and prior to the replacement, we were spending thousands of dollars every year because shingles would fly off in the wind.

We haven’t had any issues in the past 7 years. Our experience with Interlock Metal Roofing was excellent — they were very professional and did a beautiful job, even though our roof is quite high and challenging.

Our roof still looks beautiful, and we haven’t had to worry about it at all in the past 9 years.

Corvallis, OR Metal Shingle Roof Review — Interlock (Installed 2017)

Review: April 24, 2026

Completion: November 9, 2017

I love my Interlock roof! No more climbing up to clean it, and no more gritty debris falling into my garden after a few years. It looks fantastic and performs exactly as it should.

The installers were excellent—knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and personable. Ivan is a gem! He handled a small flashing addition efficiently and cleaned the entire roof with a blower in no time.

After almost ten years, it’s still the only roof I would choose.

Interlock Metal Roof Review - Ramara, ON (Installed 2019)

Completion: April 23, 2026

We are so happy with our interlock roof from Bruce. We had shopped around because we live on the lake with strong winds and we wanted a quality, long lasting product. Our roof has never changed colour and looks just as good now as the day it was installed. We also love the lifetime transferable warranty. We also love that it is made in Canada so there are no tariffs. Bruce was our sales person. He came right away, explained everything to us. We made the right decision not choosing shingles because of the environment and quality of the product. This was an affordable investment that was worth it. The crew was professional in every aspect. If I move, I will definitely be contacting Bruce again for another interlock roof.

Portland, OR Metal Shingles Review — Safety Anchors Installed 2019

Review: April 20, 2026

Completion: June 20, 2019

We’ve had our roof for about 7 years and have been very pleased with it. Recently, I scheduled gutter cleaning which was complicated by a run of wet weather which makes the roof very slippery. The gutter contractor asked if we had ever considered installing safety anchors. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I called Interlock and Ivan came by to take a look. He quickly determined appropriate locations for the anchors that the gutter cleaners could clip their safety harnesses to and showed me an example of the anchor itself. He also offered to paint them black to make them more inconspicuous on our dark roof. He returned about a week later for the install and afterwards showed us pictures of the anchors from the roof and pointed them out from the ground. Overall very professional, prompt, excellent service.

Interlock Metal Shingle Roof Review in Bay View, WI (Installed 2009)

Review: April 16, 2026

Completion: February 20, 2009

I had Interlock put on a beautiful red slate roof 17 years ago.The roof still looks beautiful. 5 years ago, I had them also re-roof my garage with the same type of slate. The roofs look gorgeous and I have no maintenance whatsoever.I get complements all the time. The guy whom I contracted with was named "Tim' but has since died. He was a really nice guy. Back in 2009, the roof was much cheaper. ( I actually paid more for the garage 5 years ago!) I am extremely happy with the roofs. The guys did a wonderful job, replacing rotted boards where necessary. They also told me about very cheap gutters I could buy at Menards instead of those ridiculously - priced "special" gutter systems. I bought them and they placed them on my buildings. This home will go to my daughter one day; I do not want her to have to lift a finger. Note that I had an asphalt roof previously. It lasted only 12 years. The shingles curled up under the sun and cracked. They looked terrible. I can honestly say that these metals roofs by Interlock are very much worth what you pay for them. They will last a lifetime with almost no maintenance. Instead of replacing a roof every 15 years and paying lots for asphalt or fiberglass, their metal roofs last very long and you will never have to re- roof again.

Interlock Metal Roofing Review in Saint Paul, AB — 50-Year Warranty (Installed 2025)

Review: April 15, 2026

Completion: August 31, 2025

We recently installed a new Interlock Roofing System, and we couldn’t be happier with the decision. Knowing it’s backed by a limited lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable 50-year warranty gives us real peace of mind—it truly feels like a smart long-term investment. Mr. Yorman and his crew were outstanding from start to finish. Their commitment to customer service is second to none. They showed up exactly when they said they would and worked diligently until the job was completed. The finished product looks fantastic, and the cleanup was so thorough that our property actually looked better than before they arrived. A special mention to Tyler, who did an excellent job walking us through the benefits and helping us feel confident in choosing this system. Overall, a great experience and highly recommended!

We installed an Interlock roof in 2017. The roof is still like new. Due to an insulation issue and snow depth of over 4 feet, we had an ice build up problem. Ken, Greg and Cheri provided consultation and prompt service in addressing the addition of snow guards. Their knowledgable and friendly service was greatly appreciated. We highly recommend both the product and the team.

I recently had my 25 year old asphalt roof replaced with an Interlock Metal roof. I'm so very happy with my decision. In fact, best decision ever to have Interlock Industries install. The metal roof is manufactured in Delta, BC and they have their own installers. It's not panels! It looks very much like a cedar roof! Colour is awesome as well! My home is located in Victoria on Vancouver Island and looks great with my new roof! Interlock is a very professional business from contract signing to installation. Amazing crew that gets the job done in a timely manner. My roof looks fabulous. It's a work of art!!

Aurora, ON Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Installation (2016)

Review: April 13, 2026

Completion: May 3, 2016

We moved into our new house in 1984. Our new house came with new 25 year shingles. In 2004, 20 years later we noticed that our roof shingles needed to be redone. Now, back in 1984 they used asbestos in the roof shingles and although at the time they said they were 25 year shingles, we were still happy to get 20 years out of them. So, in 2004 we got a quote and had the roof re-shingled. We paid extra for the 25 year shingles as we had such a good result with the original shingles. In 2016 (i.e. 12 years later) my neighbour told us that our shingles on the south side of the house were cracked with rolled up edges and needed to be replaced. (We can't see the south roof of our house unless we are visiting the neighbours.) The shingles on the north side were still ok, but since you can't really shingle half a roof we knew that we had to have the whole roof done...after just 12 years. We were a little upset about this and decided to go to the National Home Show in Toronto to look at alternatives. We met Tom Watson at the Interlock Metal Roofing booth and he took a lot of time and explained the complete roofing system to us. We liked what we saw and what was explained to us and we arranged to have a home visit from Interlock and to give us a quote. The metal roof was certainly a lot more expensive than a regular asphalt shingle roof, but we decided to get the metal roof anyways because we did not want the hassle of having to re-shingle every 10 or 11 years...and there are also some other unforeseen benefits detailed below that we did not know about at the time. The metal roof comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty, 50 year transferable, not prorated so even though more expensive it adds value to lyour home because if in the future you are looking to sell, the buyer knows he won't have any roof problems for the 50 year life of the roof. Your roof becomes an asset instead of a liability. The installation happened over 4-5 days. I paid a lot of attention to what they were doing and how they were doing it. The roof vents were removed. These are the same roof vents that raccoons like to rip off for access to your attic, so that potential problem went away. A ridge vent (google it) was installed on the top of the roof and it is low profile and fits in so you would not know that it is there. Raccoons have been known to chew a hole in asphalt shingles and roofing plywood to get into your attic. With a metal roof, it isn't happening. That mode of access is eliminated. Now, with our previous asphalt shingles we had constant problems with raccoons pooping on our roof (sound familiar?) and for some reason, at least for the last 10 years that we have had the metal roof, that has not happened. I don't know why, but I can speculate that the raccoons find the metal roof very slippery and they are not comfortable being up there and doing their business while trying not to slide off the roof. Also, in the past we have had squirrels occasionally make their way through, under, beside our asphalt shingles and get into our attic. That will never happen with a metal roof because the whole roof is sealed and northing is getting that way. If you are concerned about high winds ripping off your shingles you don't have to worry with a metal roof. Each and every metal shingle is fastened to the roof with aluminum screws (note the metal roof shingles are painted and baked to a tough finish) and they are interlocked with each other, so you may lose your entire roof in a hurricane, but the metal shingles will still be attached to it. We moved into our new house in 1984. After about 2 years of sweating through humid summers, we installed an A/C system. Our new A/C system worked ok in that it removed the humidity and cooled the house, but with the high 37 deg C temperatures it was struggling. The A/C would run continuously and never stopped on those hot days, but once the metal roof was installed it cycled on and off as designed. We highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing.

We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!

I love my Interlock roof. It was installed about 7 years ago. Recently had indication that a little roof leak was occurring and I called Interlock up.
