Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Anchorage

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Anchorage often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Anchorage may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs commonly last at least 50–75+ years, while asphalt shingles typically last 15–30 years. Anchorage’s subarctic, maritime-influenced climate brings heavy seasonal snowfall (~75–80 in/yr) and frequent freeze–thaw cycles that stress roofing materials. High snow loads require strong structural support and good snow‑shedding; coastal moisture and salt spray can accelerate corrosion on lesser metals and shorten shingle life. Freeze‑thaw and long, wet winters speed granule loss and membrane degradation on asphalt, so many Anchorage homeowners choose durable metal for longer life, lower maintenance, and reliable performance in snow and moisture. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy‑gauge aluminum and include a lifetime limited 50‑year transferable warranty, making them a smart long‑term choice for local conditions. Consider panel profile, gauge, and quality of installation when comparing quotes.
Metal roofs in Anchorage usually cost more upfront than asphalt shingles, but total cost varies with roof size, pitch, complexity (hips, valleys, skylights), tear‑off, flashing and labor. Local factors matter: Anchorage averages roughly 75–79 inches of snow a year and local design snow loads are about 40 lb/ft², so snow load and ice‑dam risk can push you toward heavier gauge metal and stronger fastening systems that raise price. Coastal moisture and freeze‑thaw cycles also increase corrosion and maintenance needs, influencing material and underlayment choices. Many homeowners compare lifetime value rather than initial price: durable metal systems lower long‑term repair and replacement costs. Interlock Metal Roofing emphasizes long‑term ownership value and durability instead of competing as a low‑cost roofing option.
Anchorage gets substantial snowfall (roughly 70–77 in. annually) and a maritime, moisture‑influenced climate—conditions that drive freeze–thaw cycles, ice‑dam risk, and coastal moisture exposure. Lifespan: metal roofs commonly last 40–70+ years versus 15–30 years for asphalt shingles. Maintenance: metal typically needs less upkeep—snow sheds easier and ice‑dam risk is lower—while asphalt requires more frequent inspections, repairs, and eventual replacement. Durability: metal resists wind, snow loads and rot better; however, coastal salt and moisture mean coatings/galvanization matter to prevent corrosion. Asphalt can suffer from freeze‑thaw damage, granule loss, and accelerated wear. Long‑term value: higher upfront cost for metal but lower lifecycle costs for owners valuing durability and protection. Homeowners prioritizing long‑term performance often choose metal. Interlock Metal Roofing systems appeal because they offer durable, interlocking panels with architectural curb appeal for Anchorage’s challenging climate.
Many homeowners worry metal roofs are noisy in Anchorage, but that’s a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking don’t sound like barn roofs. Insulation, attic volume, and complete roof assembly (underlayment, sheathing, insulation) strongly affect rain noise; quality installation and secure fastening reduce vibration. Anchorage has a coastal, maritime-influenced climate with substantial winter snowfall and frequent freeze–thaw cycles, so roofs are normally built with solid decking and insulation to handle snow loads and damp sound. Properly installed residential metal roofs typically sound similar to asphalt or tile. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems designed for residential homes.
Yes — a metal roof can be energy efficient in Anchorage. Metal can reflect sunlight, lowering summer heat gain, and when paired with the right finish it improves thermal performance. However overall energy performance depends on roof assembly, insulation and ventilation: adequate insulation and a ventilated attic are essential to limit heat loss in winter. Local conditions—heavy snowfall, coastal moisture and frequent freeze–thaw cycles from Anchorage’s subarctic coastal climate—influence benefits and installation choices, like snow guards, corrosion‑resistant coatings and precise flashing to prevent ice dams. Homeowners often weigh energy savings alongside comfort, lower heating bills, durability and resale value when comparing replacement materials. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long‑term home performance.
Anchorage experiences long, cold, snowy winters and a strong coastal/maritime influence (frequent snow, freeze–thaw cycles and salt‑laden winds) which stress roofs year‑round. Metal roofing performs well in these conditions: standing‑seam and interlocking systems shed snow, resist ice dam damage, and can withstand high winds and hail when rated appropriately. Performance hinges on roofing system design (panel profile, fastening, underlayment), installation quality (sealing, flashing, fastener pattern) and material durability/coating (galvanized/galvalume, painted finishes). Homeowners weigh weather resilience to reduce leaks, ice‑related damage, wind uplift and corrosion from coastal moisture. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection and enhanced wind resistance, but benefits depend on proper product selection and professional installation for Anchorage’s heavy snow and coastal exposure.
Anchorage’s long, snowy winters, frequent freeze–thaw cycles, and coastal moisture/salt spray increase corrosion risk on roofs, so material choice matters for longevity and maintenance needs. In general, metal roofing performance depends on the metal type: steel (galvanized or coated) can corrode if coatings fail, while aluminum is inherently corrosion-resistant and performs well in wet or coastal environments. Homeowners should prioritize corrosion resistance to avoid leaks, fastener and flashing failure, and accelerated coating loss under heavy snow loads and salt exposure. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminum construction engineered for strong corrosion resistance and are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection—making them a good option for Anchorage’s marine-influenced, freeze–thaw climate.
Metal roofing is generally low‑maintenance and performs well against wind and snow, but it isn’t completely maintenance‑free. Anchorage’s heavy snowfall and freeze–thaw cycles, plus coastal moisture, can accelerate ice damming, coating wear, and corrosion. Homeowners should inspect roofs seasonally and after storms: remove debris, clear gutters, check fasteners, and examine flashing, vents, skylights and other penetrations. Address damaged coatings or loose fasteners promptly and consider snow‑retention where needed. Overall, metal roofs are a durable, low‑maintenance choice for Anchorage when inspected and maintained regularly.
Yes — in Anchorage a metal roof can increase home value because buyers here prize durable, low‑maintenance roofs that withstand heavy seasonal snow and frequent freeze–thaw cycles which drive ice‑dam and wear concerns. Premium roofing materials boost curb appeal in established neighborhoods, and a long service life improves buyer confidence compared with asphalt shingles. Architectural style matters locally, so choose a profile that fits your street. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer slate, cedar‑shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing‑seam profiles in heavy‑gauge aluminum and solid copper, delivering high‑end appearance plus superior snow‑shedding and resistance to coastal moisture and salt exposure—advantages Anchorage buyers will notice.
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar installation with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Industries (Alaska) Inc. In Anchorage, heavy snow loads and frequent freeze–thaw cycles—plus coastal moisture and occasional high winds—affect roof performance, so durable roofs and secure, weatherproof mounts are essential. Roof lifespan is important when adding panels: longer‑lasting materials reduce the chance you’ll remove panels to reroof. When comparing materials, prioritize long‑life metal systems that are designed to support solar mounting solutions. If you may add solar later, plan during roof replacement so mounts and framing integrate cleanly; Interlock’s systems are engineered for this and commonly used with custom brackets to maintain watertight integrity and load capacity.

I attended the Sudbury home show on April 25th and had chance to meet Bruce Mehuys with interlock roofing. I purchased a home 2 years ago and had an interlock metal roof. The quality and workmanship was second to none. Bruce was very informative and knowledgeable. I would recommend them to anyone.

I’ve had my interlock roof for 14 yrs and have had no issues with it until this last winter. We had heavier than normal snow and a lot of freeze thaw conditions. Several of the snow deflectors were pushed forward and lifted some of the roof. I emailed Dave and Tyler and repairs were made quickly . You can’t tell there was any concerns at all.

Metal Shingle Roof Review in Sudbury, ON (Interlock - Installed 2017)

Review: April 25, 2026

Completion: June 7, 2018

We had our roof replaced in 2017 with an aluminum roof by Interlock Metal Roofing. We live on the lake, and prior to the replacement, we were spending thousands of dollars every year because shingles would fly off in the wind.

We haven’t had any issues in the past 7 years. Our experience with Interlock Metal Roofing was excellent — they were very professional and did a beautiful job, even though our roof is quite high and challenging.

Our roof still looks beautiful, and we haven’t had to worry about it at all in the past 9 years.

Corvallis, OR Metal Shingle Roof Review — Interlock (Installed 2017)

Review: April 24, 2026

Completion: November 9, 2017

I love my Interlock roof! No more climbing up to clean it, and no more gritty debris falling into my garden after a few years. It looks fantastic and performs exactly as it should.

The installers were excellent—knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and personable. Ivan is a gem! He handled a small flashing addition efficiently and cleaned the entire roof with a blower in no time.

After almost ten years, it’s still the only roof I would choose.

Interlock Metal Roof Review - Ramara, ON (Installed 2019)

Review: April 23, 2026

Completion: April 23, 2026

We are so happy with our interlock roof from Bruce. We had shopped around because we live on the lake with strong winds and we wanted a quality, long lasting product. Our roof has never changed colour and looks just as good now as the day it was installed. We also love the lifetime transferable warranty. We also love that it is made in Canada so there are no tariffs. Bruce was our sales person. He came right away, explained everything to us. We made the right decision not choosing shingles because of the environment and quality of the product. This was an affordable investment that was worth it. The crew was professional in every aspect. If I move, I will definitely be contacting Bruce again for another interlock roof.

Portland, OR Metal Shingles Review — Safety Anchors Installed 2019

Review: April 20, 2026

Completion: June 20, 2019

We’ve had our roof for about 7 years and have been very pleased with it. Recently, I scheduled gutter cleaning which was complicated by a run of wet weather which makes the roof very slippery. The gutter contractor asked if we had ever considered installing safety anchors. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I called Interlock and Ivan came by to take a look. He quickly determined appropriate locations for the anchors that the gutter cleaners could clip their safety harnesses to and showed me an example of the anchor itself. He also offered to paint them black to make them more inconspicuous on our dark roof. He returned about a week later for the install and afterwards showed us pictures of the anchors from the roof and pointed them out from the ground. Overall very professional, prompt, excellent service.

Interlock Metal Shingle Roof Review in Bay View, WI (Installed 2009)

Review: April 16, 2026

Completion: February 20, 2009

I had Interlock put on a beautiful red slate roof 17 years ago.The roof still looks beautiful. 5 years ago, I had them also re-roof my garage with the same type of slate. The roofs look gorgeous and I have no maintenance whatsoever.I get complements all the time. The guy whom I contracted with was named "Tim' but has since died. He was a really nice guy. Back in 2009, the roof was much cheaper. ( I actually paid more for the garage 5 years ago!) I am extremely happy with the roofs. The guys did a wonderful job, replacing rotted boards where necessary. They also told me about very cheap gutters I could buy at Menards instead of those ridiculously - priced "special" gutter systems. I bought them and they placed them on my buildings. This home will go to my daughter one day; I do not want her to have to lift a finger. Note that I had an asphalt roof previously. It lasted only 12 years. The shingles curled up under the sun and cracked. They looked terrible. I can honestly say that these metals roofs by Interlock are very much worth what you pay for them. They will last a lifetime with almost no maintenance. Instead of replacing a roof every 15 years and paying lots for asphalt or fiberglass, their metal roofs last very long and you will never have to re- roof again.

Interlock Metal Roofing Review in Saint Paul, AB — 50-Year Warranty (Installed 2025)

Review: April 15, 2026

Completion: August 31, 2025

We recently installed a new Interlock Roofing System, and we couldn’t be happier with the decision. Knowing it’s backed by a limited lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable 50-year warranty gives us real peace of mind—it truly feels like a smart long-term investment. Mr. Yorman and his crew were outstanding from start to finish. Their commitment to customer service is second to none. They showed up exactly when they said they would and worked diligently until the job was completed. The finished product looks fantastic, and the cleanup was so thorough that our property actually looked better than before they arrived. A special mention to Tyler, who did an excellent job walking us through the benefits and helping us feel confident in choosing this system. Overall, a great experience and highly recommended!

We installed an Interlock roof in 2017. The roof is still like new. Due to an insulation issue and snow depth of over 4 feet, we had an ice build up problem. Ken, Greg and Cheri provided consultation and prompt service in addressing the addition of snow guards. Their knowledgable and friendly service was greatly appreciated. We highly recommend both the product and the team.

I recently had my 25 year old asphalt roof replaced with an Interlock Metal roof. I'm so very happy with my decision. In fact, best decision ever to have Interlock Industries install. The metal roof is manufactured in Delta, BC and they have their own installers. It's not panels! It looks very much like a cedar roof! Colour is awesome as well! My home is located in Victoria on Vancouver Island and looks great with my new roof! Interlock is a very professional business from contract signing to installation. Amazing crew that gets the job done in a timely manner. My roof looks fabulous. It's a work of art!!

Aurora, ON Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Installation (2016)

Review: April 13, 2026

Completion: May 3, 2016

We moved into our new house in 1984. Our new house came with new 25 year shingles. In 2004, 20 years later we noticed that our roof shingles needed to be redone. Now, back in 1984 they used asbestos in the roof shingles and although at the time they said they were 25 year shingles, we were still happy to get 20 years out of them. So, in 2004 we got a quote and had the roof re-shingled. We paid extra for the 25 year shingles as we had such a good result with the original shingles. In 2016 (i.e. 12 years later) my neighbour told us that our shingles on the south side of the house were cracked with rolled up edges and needed to be replaced. (We can't see the south roof of our house unless we are visiting the neighbours.) The shingles on the north side were still ok, but since you can't really shingle half a roof we knew that we had to have the whole roof done...after just 12 years. We were a little upset about this and decided to go to the National Home Show in Toronto to look at alternatives. We met Tom Watson at the Interlock Metal Roofing booth and he took a lot of time and explained the complete roofing system to us. We liked what we saw and what was explained to us and we arranged to have a home visit from Interlock and to give us a quote. The metal roof was certainly a lot more expensive than a regular asphalt shingle roof, but we decided to get the metal roof anyways because we did not want the hassle of having to re-shingle every 10 or 11 years...and there are also some other unforeseen benefits detailed below that we did not know about at the time. The metal roof comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty, 50 year transferable, not prorated so even though more expensive it adds value to lyour home because if in the future you are looking to sell, the buyer knows he won't have any roof problems for the 50 year life of the roof. Your roof becomes an asset instead of a liability. The installation happened over 4-5 days. I paid a lot of attention to what they were doing and how they were doing it. The roof vents were removed. These are the same roof vents that raccoons like to rip off for access to your attic, so that potential problem went away. A ridge vent (google it) was installed on the top of the roof and it is low profile and fits in so you would not know that it is there. Raccoons have been known to chew a hole in asphalt shingles and roofing plywood to get into your attic. With a metal roof, it isn't happening. That mode of access is eliminated. Now, with our previous asphalt shingles we had constant problems with raccoons pooping on our roof (sound familiar?) and for some reason, at least for the last 10 years that we have had the metal roof, that has not happened. I don't know why, but I can speculate that the raccoons find the metal roof very slippery and they are not comfortable being up there and doing their business while trying not to slide off the roof. Also, in the past we have had squirrels occasionally make their way through, under, beside our asphalt shingles and get into our attic. That will never happen with a metal roof because the whole roof is sealed and northing is getting that way. If you are concerned about high winds ripping off your shingles you don't have to worry with a metal roof. Each and every metal shingle is fastened to the roof with aluminum screws (note the metal roof shingles are painted and baked to a tough finish) and they are interlocked with each other, so you may lose your entire roof in a hurricane, but the metal shingles will still be attached to it. We moved into our new house in 1984. After about 2 years of sweating through humid summers, we installed an A/C system. Our new A/C system worked ok in that it removed the humidity and cooled the house, but with the high 37 deg C temperatures it was struggling. The A/C would run continuously and never stopped on those hot days, but once the metal roof was installed it cycled on and off as designed. We highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing.

We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
