Roofing installation in Calgary: after a relentless 12+ hour windstorm the homeowner’s 18-year-old roof required a repair. After a relentless 12+ hour windstorm, our 18-year-old roof needed a repair. When I called to book it, that’s when I learned the previous owner and my senior parents hadn’t transferred the warranty when the house was bought 13 years ago. Despite that, the owners came out the very same day and honored it! The repair itself was simple — just two screws — but high up on the roof with a sloped ground below, making it tricky and time-consuming. First time in 18 years our roof has needed work, and their honesty, professionalism, and prompt service were incredible. Highly recommend this company!

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Calgary

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Calgary often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Calgary may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs in Calgary commonly last 50–75+ years, while asphalt shingles typically need replacement much sooner—often 15–25 years depending on product and maintenance. Calgary’s climate — large temperature swings, Chinook‑driven rapid thaw/freeze cycles, frequent hail and strong winds — increases wear on asphalt (lifting, cracking, impact damage) but metal resists impact and thermal cycling better than shingles. Heavy snow loads and occasional freezing rain also stress roof assemblies; durable panels shed snow and are less susceptible to freeze–thaw deterioration. High sunshine and UV can accelerate shingle ageing, too. Homeowners choose metal for longevity, lower maintenance, and better hail and wind performance. Interlock Metal Roofing uses heavy‑gauge aluminium and is backed by a Lifetime Limited, 50‑year transferable product warranty for long‑term protection.
Metal roofs in Calgary generally cost more up front than asphalt shingles, but long service life often improves lifetime value. Exact cost depends on roof area, slope, complexity (dormers, valleys), tear-off, flashing, skylights and labour. Locally, frequent hail can drive choice toward tougher metal profiles, since Calgary is in “hail alley” with regularly damaging storms. Freeze–thaw cycling and substantial winter snow loads also stress fasteners and seams, so installers and materials rated for those conditions affect price and longevity. Durable metal systems tend to reduce future repair and replacement costs, so many homeowners compare lifetime cost rather than initial price. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long-term ownership value and durability rather than competing as a low-cost roofing option.
Short answer: yes—often. Metal roofing often lasts over 50 years, while typical asphalt shingles last about 15–25 years; that gap drives big lifecycle differences. Lifespan: metal ≈50+ years; asphalt ≈15–25 years. Maintenance: metal needs infrequent inspection and occasional resealing; shingles require more frequent repairs and replacement of damaged areas. Durability: metal resists rot, ice dams and long-term UV degradation better; high winds and heavy hail can still dent metal, while asphalt is more likely to be torn or granule-loss. Long-term value: higher upfront cost for metal but lower replacement and insurance exposure over decades, often yielding better lifetime value for homeowners staying long-term. Local weather note: Calgary sits in Canada’s “Hail Alley,” increasing hail risk, and frequent freeze–thaw cycles stress roofing materials—both factors favour more durable systems in many cases. Homeowners prioritising durability and long-term protection often choose metal; Interlock Metal Roofing appeals for lasting performance and architectural curb appeal.
Myth: metal roofs are noisy in rain — a common belief. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking with proper underlayment, attic insulation and airspace do not sound like barn roofs. In Calgary, frequent hailstorms and rapid Chinook-driven freeze–thaw cycles influence roofing performance, so durable assemblies and quality installation matter. Insulation, attic size and the full roof assembly (not just the metal) determine sound transmission; a skilled installer prevents rattles. Properly installed residential metal roofs typically sound similar to asphalt or tile. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems designed for residential homes.
Yes — metal roofs can be energy efficient for Calgary homeowners. Metal reflects sunlight, lowering summer heat gain and cooling use, while a well‑built roof assembly with proper insulation and attic ventilation controls winter heat loss and moisture performance. Calgary’s strong freeze–thaw cycles and occasional large hail and snow loads influence outcomes: reflective benefits are smaller in a heating‑dominant climate and snow can act as temporary insulation, but metal sheds snow and resists hail damage better than many materials, helping longevity. Homeowners compare energy efficiency to reduce utility bills, improve comfort and increase resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered to support long‑term home performance through durability, thermal performance and weather resistance.
Calgary experiences frequent severe hailstorms and notable freeze–thaw swings (plus strong Chinook winds), both of which drive roofing failures locally. Properly designed and installed metal roofs (standing-seam, interlocked panels, correct fastenings and underlayment) resist wind uplift, shed snow and tolerate freeze–thaw cycling better than many asphalt systems. Hail resistance depends on gauge, alloy and coating; heavier gauges and impact-rated profiles reduce denting. Ultimately performance hinges on roofing system design, installation quality and material durability. Homeowners choose for resilience to reduce repair frequency and insurance claims. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection and wind resistance, but ensure the product spec, gauge and a certified installation match Calgary’s hail and freeze–thaw exposure.
Metal roofing performance depends on the metal type and coating: galvanised steel, zinc, copper, stainless steel and aluminium behave differently, with aluminium, zinc and stainless offering higher corrosion resistance. Calgary’s freeze–thaw cycles and frequent summer hail plus strong UV can damage coatings and accelerate corrosion if the substrate is vulnerable. Homeowners should prioritise corrosion resistance to reduce leaks, maintenance and premature replacement; aluminium performs especially well in wet or corrosive conditions and won’t rust like steel. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction designed for strong corrosion resistance and are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection. Compare substrates, warranty and local installer experience when choosing.
Metal roofing is generally low‑maintenance and very durable, making it a strong choice here. However, no roof is maintenance‑free — periodic inspections (after storms and seasonally) are recommended. Clear debris and snow from valleys and gutters, check flashing, fasteners and roof penetrations, and remove branch buildup to avoid trapped moisture. Calgary’s freeze–thaw swings (Chinooks) and frequent hail can stress seams and coatings, so watch for dents, paint damage or loose flashings. After severe hail or rapid thaw events, have a pro inspect and touch up coatings; metal still compares favourably to shingles for longevity and resistance to snow loads and wind.
Yes — in Calgary a metal roof can increase resale value when buyers compare durability, low maintenance and longevity against other materials. Calgary’s frequent summer hail and regular freeze–thaw/Chinook temperature swings can damage softer roofing; buyers pay more for resilient roofs that reduce future repair risk. Premium metal roofing boosts curb appeal and signals quality; a long lifespan improves buyer confidence. Architectural style matters — a metal roof that suits the neighbourhood’s character will add more perceived value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam profiles in heavy‑gauge aluminium and solid copper, letting you match durable performance with the home’s style.
Yes — Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are solar compatible; Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. can install custom solar brackets that keep the roof watertight and work with local PV installers. In Calgary, frequent hailstorms and freeze–thaw/snow‑load cycles stress roofs, so lifespan matters when adding panels. Because solar arrays typically remain for decades, choose a roof material that will outlast or match panel life to avoid removing panels for reroofing. When comparing materials here, prioritise long‑lasting, low‑maintenance options (Interlock’s lifetime aluminium is designed to support solar mounting solutions) and plan for future solar when you replace your roof.

This is the 3rd roof I've had installed by Interlock. I put one on my original house, my cottage, and now my new house. They have always done an excellent job, and the aluminum shingles are a great product — light, sturdy, and still looking good even years down the road.

Edmonton, AB Interlock Metal Roofing Review (Installed 2014)

Review: April 27, 2026

Completion: July 14, 2014

I’ve had my interlock roof for 14 yrs and have had no issues with it until this last winter. We had heavier than normal snow and a lot of freeze thaw conditions. Several of the snow deflectors were pushed forward and lifted some of the roof. I emailed Dave and Tyler and repairs were made quickly . You can’t tell there was any concerns at all.
