Chicago, IL Aluminum Slate Metal Roof Review — Interlock (Installed 2026)

Chicago, IL

TL;DR: Chicago Review Summary

Roofing installation in Chicago: the homeowner replaced their 100-year-old bungalow’s composite shingles with an aluminum slate-style Interlock roof to rejuvenate attic and basement spaces, enable future solar panels, and reduce the environmental and weight impacts of traditional composite roofing. Installers were professional and safety-conscious; the new roof weighs under 850 lbs (vs. 3–4 tons for composite), carries a 50-year warranty and is recyclable, reduced afternoon attic temperatures by about 10–20°F, includes 95 snow guards and dormer siding replacement, and left the homeowners satisfied and ready to install solar.
William P.

The investment we made in a new aluminum slate style shingle roof was much more than we wanted to spend, but when we analyzed the pros and cons, including the cost, it came out ahead. We wanted to upgrade our 100-year-old Chicago bungalow and, in particular, rejuvenate the attic and basement spaces. We also want to install a solar panel array on the roof while the current incentives with the IRS, the state and the utility net metering system are still in effect. We wanted to reduce the massive composite shingle tonnage that is covering the incredible sea of roofs across the land. This is undoubtedly a rather large carbon footprint and the short lifespan of many roofs (10-15 years) are causing us to fill and foul unsustainable dumpsites.

The weight of our aluminum roof is less than 850 lbs., compared to 3-4 tons of architectural composite shingles. The Interlock roof is a lifetime roof warrantied for 50 years. When/if it is ever replaced, it will be completely recycle-able.

Much of the heat captured by composite shingle roofs is reflected by the aluminum. Previously, our attic could reach temperatures near 130°F. We have seen a significant reduction in afternoon attic temps, 10-20 degrees.

The installers, Jesse, Sal and Ben were very professional, safe and kind to us. They took the extra time to do it right and solve problems rather than take an easier route. They maintained social distancing and wore masks when necessary. They screwed down OSB sheathing on the existing 100-year-old deck boards which are stamped Sterling Lumber and Supply Co. “The Yards with the Stock”. This company was located two blocks from our house in the early 1900s. Interlock continues a tradition from Sterling Lumber to build to last a lifetime. The original 1919 roof rafters were 2″x4″x16′ and held up under numerous Chicago blizzards and storms. Prior to the project, we augmented the rafters with 2″x6″x16′ #1 southern yellow pine. Hopefully, the roof will bear another century of Chicago climate change.

The Interlock Industries’ workers installed 95 snow guards to breakup snow slides off the roof. The roof is very attractive and my neighbors have complemented the looks of it. The siding on the dormers were also replaced with the aluminum shingles. We had a choice of several shingle <a class="wpil_keyword_link" title="colors" href="” data-wpil-keyword-link=”linked”>colors and chose one called gunflint. The shingles have a <a class="wpil_keyword_link" title="slate" href="” data-wpil-keyword-link=”linked”>slate-like surface that is embossed on the aluminum to give it a textured appearance and perhaps breakup wind and water flows. The Interlock installers removed and sheathed over the chimney and vent caps and added a ridge vent. They installed soffit vents which apparently were never a feature of the house. They removed the gutters and reinstalled them in order to fit the drip edge flashing and lock down the shingles. Everything is fastened with screws powered by cordless screw guns. They did not use air compressors. They had safety lanyards attached to the ridge and foot boards around the perimeter of the roof throughout the installation.

We are very satisfied with the look of our new roof and ready to install solar panels which won’t have to be removed to re-roof because the roof will probably last longer than the solar panels. We are not young anymore and the long-term value of this project will most likely benefit others and the neighborhood more than us, but for the time being, we are happy customers.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Chicago

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Chicago often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Chicago may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs in Chicago commonly last 50–75+ years, while asphalt shingles typically last 15–30 years and need replacement sooner. Chicago’s humid continental climate brings cold, snowy winters and hot, humid summers, with about 39 in. of annual precipitation—conditions that stress roofing materials. Two local factors especially relevant: winter snow loads and frequent freeze–thaw cycles that cause expansion, contraction, and ice buildup on roof surfaces, accelerating wear. These stresses make durable materials appealing—metal resists wet/dry cycling, sheds snow, and tolerates thermal movement and wind better than asphalt. For long-term protection, Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy-gauge aluminum and include a lifetime limited 50-year transferable warranty designed to meet Chicago’s snow, freeze–thaw, and weather challenges.
Chicago’s cold, snowy winters and frequent freeze–thaw cycles can stress roofing materials, increasing the appeal of metal’s durability; the region’s climate is continental with freezing, snowy winters and wind exposure, and freeze–thaw events average several per year. Metal roofs in Chicago typically cost more upfront than asphalt shingles. Final pricing depends on roof size, pitch, complexity (hips, valleys), tear-off needs, flashing and skylight work, and local labor and permitting. Local construction factors (winter timing, scaffolding for tall Chicago homes, wind-rated attachments) can raise costs. Many homeowners evaluate options by lifetime value—higher initial cost for metal often yields fewer repairs, lower replacement frequency, and better long-term economics. Durable metal systems can reduce future repair and replacement costs. Interlock Metal Roofing positions its products and installations for long-term ownership value rather than competing as a low-cost roofing option.
Short answer: For many Chicago homeowners who prioritize durability and long‑term protection, metal roofing is often worth the higher upfront cost compared to asphalt; budget‑conscious owners may still choose asphalt for lower initial cost. Lifespan: Metal commonly lasts 40–70+ years versus 15–30 years for asphalt. Maintenance: metal needs less frequent repair and resists ice‑dam related leaks better; asphalt requires periodic shingle replacement and inspection. Durability: metal resists wind, heavy snow and hail better; asphalt can degrade faster under repeated freeze–thaw cycles. Long‑term value: higher install cost for metal is often offset by longer service life and lower lifetime maintenance. Chicago has a humid continental climate with cold, snowy winters and large temperature swings that drive freeze–thaw cycles, and those freeze–thaw events are common in the region. Homeowners seeking long‑term performance and architectural curb appeal often choose Interlock Metal Roofing systems for their durability, low maintenance and refined appearance.
Are metal roofs noisy during rain in Chicago, IL? That’s a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking with appropriate underlayment and insulation do not sound like barn roofs. Attic space, insulation, underlayment and the overall roof assembly greatly reduce impact and airborne noise. Quality installation—secure fastening, proper flashings and continuous substrate—also minimizes vibration and rattling. When designed and installed properly, residential metal roofing typically sounds similar to asphalt, tile or composite roofs during rain. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are sold and installed as complete roofing systems engineered specifically for residential homes, including the necessary underlayments and attachment methods to control sound.
Metal roofing can be energy efficient in Chicago because painted or coated panels reflect sunlight and reduce summer heat gain. Overall performance depends on the full roof assembly: underlayment, thermal insulation, and ventilation determine heat loss in winter and heat transfer in summer. Chicago’s climate—with hot summers, cold winters, and urban heat island effects—means reflective benefits in summer may be offset if insulation or ventilation are inadequate, so design matters. Homeowners replacing roofs often consider energy efficiency to lower utility bills, improve year‑round comfort, avoid ice dams and condensation, and qualify for rebates or higher resale value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered to support long‑term home performance. They also offer durable, low‑maintenance protection.
Chicago faces frequent severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail, heavy snow and repeated freeze–thaw cycles that stress roofs. Illinois logs many wind and hail reports statewide, so weather resilience is essential. Metal roofing sheds snow and ice, resists water intrusion, and—when specified and installed correctly—offers strong wind and hail resistance. Impact‑resistant coatings, heavier gauges and secure fastenings reduce denting and uplift. Regular inspections and proper underlayment help manage freeze–thaw damage. Proper engineering (continuous seams, expansion joints and rated fasteners) improves storm performance and longevity. Performance depends on: • roofing system design • installation quality • material durability Homeowners consider weather resilience to minimize damage, lower repair and replacement costs, and reduce insurance exposure. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection, and wind resistance.
Corrosion and rust resistance matter for metal roofing in Chicago, IL. Metal roofing performance depends on the metal: steel, zinc, copper, and aluminum each behave differently. Some materials (stainless steel, copper, aluminum) resist corrosion better than bare carbon steel, which can rust where protective coatings fail. Aluminum performs especially well in wet or coastal environments because it naturally forms a protective oxide and resists salt and moisture. Homeowners should consider corrosion resistance to ensure roof longevity, reduce maintenance and repair costs, prevent leaks and staining, and protect home value amid Chicago’s freeze–thaw cycles and road‑salt exposure. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminum construction designed for strong corrosion resistance and are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection.
Metal roofing in Chicago, Illinois is generally low maintenance, resisting rot, insects and many weather stresses, but no roof is completely maintenance-free. Homeowners should inspect roofs periodically—after major storms and seasonally—for loose fasteners, damaged seams, or worn coating. Clear leaves and branches, keep gutters free of buildup, and check flashing and roof penetrations (vents, chimneys, skylights) for tight seals and corrosion. Heavy snow, ice, high winds or road salt can affect finish and fasteners; prompt removal of seasonal debris prevents water pooling and abrasion. Overall, metal roofing offers a durable, long-lasting, low-maintenance option well suited to Chicago’s climate when paired with routine visual checks and occasional minor repairs.
Yes—metal roofing can increase home value in Chicago. Buyers often prioritize durable, low‑maintenance roofs that withstand severe weather, and premium materials boost curb appeal. The long lifespan of metal roofs improves buyer confidence by reducing perceived future repair costs and can raise resale value. Architectural style matters: some Chicago neighborhoods favor historic or specific vernacular looks, so the roof should complement local character. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles—slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake, and standing seam—available in heavy‑gauge aluminum and solid copper, making it easier to match neighborhood aesthetics while delivering longevity and low maintenance. In Chicago’s climate, resistance to ice dams, heavy snow, and high winds is an added selling point, and quality installation and warranties maximize value.
Yes—Interlock Metal Roofing Systems in Chicago are compatible with solar panels when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing – Midwest. Chicago’s heavy snow loads and frequent freeze–thaw cycles, plus periodic hail and wind storms, influence mounting design, flashing and anchor choices and can affect roof lifespan. Because panels add weight and attachment points, roof lifespan matters: long‑lasting materials like Interlock’s metal systems are often preferred and are engineered to support solar mounts. If you plan to add panels later, choose or replace roofing now with future solar in mind so mounts and service access can be integrated.

I’ve had my interlock roof for 14 yrs and have had no issues with it until this last winter. We had heavier than normal snow and a lot of freeze thaw conditions. Several of the snow deflectors were pushed forward and lifted some of the roof. I emailed Dave and Tyler and repairs were made quickly . You can’t tell there was any concerns at all.

Metal Shingle Roof Review in Sudbury, ON (Interlock - Installed 2017)

Review: April 25, 2026

Completion: June 7, 2018

We had our roof replaced in 2017 with an aluminum roof by Interlock Metal Roofing. We live on the lake, and prior to the replacement, we were spending thousands of dollars every year because shingles would fly off in the wind.

We haven’t had any issues in the past 7 years. Our experience with Interlock Metal Roofing was excellent — they were very professional and did a beautiful job, even though our roof is quite high and challenging.

Our roof still looks beautiful, and we haven’t had to worry about it at all in the past 9 years.

I love my Interlock roof! No more climbing up to clean it, and no more gritty debris falling into my garden after a few years. It looks fantastic and performs exactly as it should.

The installers were excellent—knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and personable. Ivan is a gem! He handled a small flashing addition efficiently and cleaned the entire roof with a blower in no time.

After almost ten years, it’s still the only roof I would choose.

Completion: April 23, 2026

We are so happy with our interlock roof from Bruce. We had shopped around because we live on the lake with strong winds and we wanted a quality, long lasting product. Our roof has never changed colour and looks just as good now as the day it was installed. We also love the lifetime transferable warranty. We also love that it is made in Canada so there are no tariffs. Bruce was our sales person. He came right away, explained everything to us. We made the right decision not choosing shingles because of the environment and quality of the product. This was an affordable investment that was worth it. The crew was professional in every aspect. If I move, I will definitely be contacting Bruce again for another interlock roof.

Portland, OR Metal Shingles Review — Safety Anchors Installed 2019

Review: April 20, 2026

Completion: June 20, 2019

We’ve had our roof for about 7 years and have been very pleased with it. Recently, I scheduled gutter cleaning which was complicated by a run of wet weather which makes the roof very slippery. The gutter contractor asked if we had ever considered installing safety anchors. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I called Interlock and Ivan came by to take a look. He quickly determined appropriate locations for the anchors that the gutter cleaners could clip their safety harnesses to and showed me an example of the anchor itself. He also offered to paint them black to make them more inconspicuous on our dark roof. He returned about a week later for the install and afterwards showed us pictures of the anchors from the roof and pointed them out from the ground. Overall very professional, prompt, excellent service.

Interlock Metal Shingle Roof Review in Bay View, WI (Installed 2009)

Review: April 16, 2026

Completion: February 20, 2009

I had Interlock put on a beautiful red slate roof 17 years ago.The roof still looks beautiful. 5 years ago, I had them also re-roof my garage with the same type of slate. The roofs look gorgeous and I have no maintenance whatsoever.I get complements all the time. The guy whom I contracted with was named "Tim' but has since died. He was a really nice guy. Back in 2009, the roof was much cheaper. ( I actually paid more for the garage 5 years ago!) I am extremely happy with the roofs. The guys did a wonderful job, replacing rotted boards where necessary. They also told me about very cheap gutters I could buy at Menards instead of those ridiculously - priced "special" gutter systems. I bought them and they placed them on my buildings. This home will go to my daughter one day; I do not want her to have to lift a finger. Note that I had an asphalt roof previously. It lasted only 12 years. The shingles curled up under the sun and cracked. They looked terrible. I can honestly say that these metals roofs by Interlock are very much worth what you pay for them. They will last a lifetime with almost no maintenance. Instead of replacing a roof every 15 years and paying lots for asphalt or fiberglass, their metal roofs last very long and you will never have to re- roof again.

Interlock Metal Roofing Review in Saint Paul, AB — 50-Year Warranty (Installed 2025)

Review: April 15, 2026

Completion: August 31, 2025

We recently installed a new Interlock Roofing System, and we couldn’t be happier with the decision. Knowing it’s backed by a limited lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable 50-year warranty gives us real peace of mind—it truly feels like a smart long-term investment. Mr. Yorman and his crew were outstanding from start to finish. Their commitment to customer service is second to none. They showed up exactly when they said they would and worked diligently until the job was completed. The finished product looks fantastic, and the cleanup was so thorough that our property actually looked better than before they arrived. A special mention to Tyler, who did an excellent job walking us through the benefits and helping us feel confident in choosing this system. Overall, a great experience and highly recommended!

I recently had my 25 year old asphalt roof replaced with an Interlock Metal roof. I'm so very happy with my decision. In fact, best decision ever to have Interlock Industries install. The metal roof is manufactured in Delta, BC and they have their own installers. It's not panels! It looks very much like a cedar roof! Colour is awesome as well! My home is located in Victoria on Vancouver Island and looks great with my new roof! Interlock is a very professional business from contract signing to installation. Amazing crew that gets the job done in a timely manner. My roof looks fabulous. It's a work of art!!

Aurora, ON Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Installation (2016)

Review: April 13, 2026

Completion: May 3, 2016

We moved into our new house in 1984. Our new house came with new 25 year shingles. In 2004, 20 years later we noticed that our roof shingles needed to be redone. Now, back in 1984 they used asbestos in the roof shingles and although at the time they said they were 25 year shingles, we were still happy to get 20 years out of them. So, in 2004 we got a quote and had the roof re-shingled. We paid extra for the 25 year shingles as we had such a good result with the original shingles. In 2016 (i.e. 12 years later) my neighbour told us that our shingles on the south side of the house were cracked with rolled up edges and needed to be replaced. (We can't see the south roof of our house unless we are visiting the neighbours.) The shingles on the north side were still ok, but since you can't really shingle half a roof we knew that we had to have the whole roof done...after just 12 years. We were a little upset about this and decided to go to the National Home Show in Toronto to look at alternatives. We met Tom Watson at the Interlock Metal Roofing booth and he took a lot of time and explained the complete roofing system to us. We liked what we saw and what was explained to us and we arranged to have a home visit from Interlock and to give us a quote. The metal roof was certainly a lot more expensive than a regular asphalt shingle roof, but we decided to get the metal roof anyways because we did not want the hassle of having to re-shingle every 10 or 11 years...and there are also some other unforeseen benefits detailed below that we did not know about at the time. The metal roof comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty, 50 year transferable, not prorated so even though more expensive it adds value to lyour home because if in the future you are looking to sell, the buyer knows he won't have any roof problems for the 50 year life of the roof. Your roof becomes an asset instead of a liability. The installation happened over 4-5 days. I paid a lot of attention to what they were doing and how they were doing it. The roof vents were removed. These are the same roof vents that raccoons like to rip off for access to your attic, so that potential problem went away. A ridge vent (google it) was installed on the top of the roof and it is low profile and fits in so you would not know that it is there. Raccoons have been known to chew a hole in asphalt shingles and roofing plywood to get into your attic. With a metal roof, it isn't happening. That mode of access is eliminated. Now, with our previous asphalt shingles we had constant problems with raccoons pooping on our roof (sound familiar?) and for some reason, at least for the last 10 years that we have had the metal roof, that has not happened. I don't know why, but I can speculate that the raccoons find the metal roof very slippery and they are not comfortable being up there and doing their business while trying not to slide off the roof. Also, in the past we have had squirrels occasionally make their way through, under, beside our asphalt shingles and get into our attic. That will never happen with a metal roof because the whole roof is sealed and northing is getting that way. If you are concerned about high winds ripping off your shingles you don't have to worry with a metal roof. Each and every metal shingle is fastened to the roof with aluminum screws (note the metal roof shingles are painted and baked to a tough finish) and they are interlocked with each other, so you may lose your entire roof in a hurricane, but the metal shingles will still be attached to it. We moved into our new house in 1984. After about 2 years of sweating through humid summers, we installed an A/C system. Our new A/C system worked ok in that it removed the humidity and cooled the house, but with the high 37 deg C temperatures it was struggling. The A/C would run continuously and never stopped on those hot days, but once the metal roof was installed it cycled on and off as designed. We highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing.

We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
