We had replaced one roof in the time we had owned our home, and now it was time for the second replacement. I began to wonder if there were any alternatives to old asphalt technology. Also, we had two concerns about asphalt, the first is that it is not clean from an environmental standpoint and second, asphalt is oil based which means its cost is linked with the price of oil. I noticed that many commercial buildings had metal roofs. My wife and I usually do a lot of deep research for major home projects. We began looking into the possibility of replacing the current roof with metal. Our research indicated that there were residential metal roofs available in various metals and styles. Four factors need to be considered. Type of metal. We chose aluminum over steel. It’s lighter and less susceptible to corrosion, although corrosion is not a major factor due to the various coatings and treatments applied to both metals during the manufacturing process. Structural assembly. We liked the Interlock method of attaching the panels to each other and the roof base. When complete, the system is structurally sound and waterproof. Installation process. Installing a metal roof requires experience. Installation is different from that of an asphalt roof. During our research, we had a hard time locating installers that had experience installing residential metal roofs. This was another reason that we chose Interlock. They are associated with installation crews who have the knowledge and experience required for working with the Interlock product. The only other factor to consider is the style and color, and there are many to choose from. Installation was uneventful, the crew was courteous, and they explained exactly what they were doing and answered any questions that we had. The roof looks beautiful, and we have had many compliments on it since it was installed two weeks ago. We are very happy that we chose Interlock for this project and highly recommend them.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Schaumburg

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Schaumburg often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Schaumburg may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

How long will a metal roof last in Schaumburg, IL?

Metal roofs in Schaumburg commonly last at least 50–75+ years, while asphalt shingles typically have shorter lifespans (often 15–30 years). Schaumburg’s climate includes cold, snowy winters and warm, wet summers, so roofs face seasonal snow loads and frequent freeze–thaw cycles that stress materials and can cause ice-damming and moisture intrusion. Hail and strong spring/summer storms are also common here and can dent or damage weaker roofing systems, so wind and impact resistance matter for longevity. Because of these local factors, homeowners often choose durable systems like metal for longer service life, lower maintenance, and better resistance to snow, freeze–thaw stress, hail, and wind. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy‑gauge aluminum and a lifetime limited 50‑year transferable warranty designed for long‑term protection.

How much does it cost to install a metal roof in Schaumburg, IL?

Metal roofs in Schaumburg usually cost more up front than asphalt shingles, but final pricing varies widely with roof size, slope, complexity, tear-off needs, flashing and skylight work, and local labor rates. Schaumburg’s winters are cold, snowy and often windy—with moderate annual snowfall and frequent freeze–thaw cycles—so contractors may specify stronger underlayment, snow guards and ice-dam detailing that raise installation cost. Summer storm season (wettest months and strong winds) can also push homeowners toward heavier-gauge panels, stronger fasteners, and enhanced warranties, affecting price and labor time. Many homeowners evaluate metal roofs by lifetime value rather than initial price because durable systems often cut future repair and replacement costs. Interlock Metal Roofing emphasizes that long-term ownership value—not being the lowest-cost option—is the company’s priority.

Should I choose metal roofing or asphalt shingles for my Schaumburg home?

In Schaumburg, IL, homeowners should weigh metal vs asphalt by lifespan, maintenance, durability and long‑term value. Metal roofs typically last 40–70 years versus 20–30 years for asphalt shingles. Metal needs less routine maintenance (occasional inspections, fastener checks) while shingles require more repairs, re‑sealing and eventual replacement. Metal is more durable against hail, heavy snow loads and freeze‑thaw cycling common in Schaumburg’s climate, while asphalt is more prone to hail damage, granule loss and ice‑dam issues under repeated freeze/thaw conditions. Severe thunderstorm and hail frequency in the Chicago suburbs also increases risk to shingles, pushing some homeowners toward metal for protection and longevity. Metal carries higher upfront cost but often better long‑term value via longer life, lower maintenance and energy benefits; homeowners prioritizing durability and long‑term protection often choose metal. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals for its interlocking panels, strong hail/snow performance, low maintenance and architectural curb appeal.

Are metal roofs noisy when it rains in Schaumburg?

No — this is a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking do not sound like barn roofs. Insulation, attic space and the complete roof assembly (decking, underlayment, ventilation) influence how rain sounds, and installation quality matters. Properly installed metal roofs with solid decking and insulation typically sound similar to asphalt or tile roofs during rain. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete residential roofing systems designed to include proper decking and components for weather and sound performance in homes such as those in Schaumburg, IL. Choosing experienced contractors and correct fasteners, clips and underlayments reduces vibration and perceived noise; climate, roof pitch and ventilation also affect sound.

How energy-efficient are metal roofs in Schaumburg?

In Schaumburg, IL, a metal roof can be energy-efficient because metal roofing can reflect sunlight, lowering summer heat gain and cooling loads. Actual performance depends on the whole roof assembly—underlayment, insulation, and ventilation—since those layers control heat transfer and moisture. Schaumburg’s warm, humid summers and cold winters mean reflective coatings help in summer, while proper insulation and ventilation preserve heat in winter and prevent ice-dam problems. Homeowners consider energy efficiency during roof replacement to lower utility bills, improve year-round comfort, meet codes or rebate requirements, and boost resale value. Choosing a metal system is one element of a comprehensive strategy; proper detailing and insulation are essential to realize savings. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long-term home performance.

How does metal roofing in Schaumburg, IL withstand wind, hail, and severe weather?

Schaumburg, IL faces severe thunderstorms with large hail, strong straight‑line winds and occasional tornado risk in spring/summer, plus heavy snow and high winds in winter. Metal roofing can perform very well in wind, hail and storms: interlocking panels resist uplift, impact‑rated alloys and coatings reduce denting, and smooth metal surfaces shed snow and water when flashings are correct. Actual performance depends on three things: • roofing system design (panel profile, underlayment, attachment) • installation quality (fastening, flashing, sealing) • material durability (gauge, alloy, finish). Homeowners weigh weather resilience to limit damage, lower repair/insurance costs and extend service life. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered specifically for durability, hail protection and wind resistance, but results rely on proper design and professional installation.

Will a metal roof rust or corrode in Schaumburg's wet climate?

Corrosion and rust resistance in metal roofing depend primarily on the metal type and protective finishes. Steel, aluminum, zinc and copper perform differently: painted or galvanized steel is economical but can corrode if coatings fail; aluminum and zinc are inherently more corrosion-resistant. Aluminum performs especially well in wet or coastal conditions because it forms a stable oxide layer that prevents further corrosion. Homeowners in Schaumburg, IL should consider corrosion resistance to extend roof lifespan, reduce maintenance, and avoid leaks or structural damage from rust. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminum construction designed for strong corrosion resistance and are further protected by the Alunar Coating System, which provides additional barrier protection against moisture and environmental exposure.

How often should I inspect and maintain my metal roof in Schaumburg?

Metal roofing in Schaumburg, Illinois is generally considered a durable, low‑maintenance option. However, no roof is completely maintenance‑free. Homeowners should inspect the roof periodically—after major storms and at least twice a year—to check for debris buildup, damaged or loose panels, and compromised fasteners. Keep gutters clear and examine roof flashing, seals, chimneys, vents, and other penetrations for gaps or corrosion. Remove leaves, branches, and ice dams promptly to prevent trapped moisture and abrasion. Severe weather (wind, hail, heavy snow) and seasonal debris from oaks and maples can accelerate wear or dislodge components. Routine cleaning, timely repairs, and professional inspections when storm damage is suspected will help maximize lifespan and maintain warranty coverage.

How does curb appeal affect my home's resale value in Schaumburg?

Yes—metal roofing can increase a home’s resale value in Schaumburg, IL. Buyers here often prioritize durable, low‑maintenance roofs that stand up to seasonal weather; premium roofing materials improve curb appeal and can make a property more competitive. A long lifespan and strong warranty give buyers confidence, reducing perceived near‑term repair costs. Neighborhood architectural style matters—metal is most value‑adding when it complements local homes and HOA guidelines. In Schaumburg’s freeze‑thaw climate, metal’s resistance to ice, wind and hail is especially appealing to buyers and appraisers assessing long‑term maintenance and insurance considerations. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles to suit varied styles, including slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake, and standing seam, available in heavy‑gauge aluminum and solid copper, allowing homeowners to match aesthetics and performance.

Can I install solar panels on my Interlock Metal Roofing System in Schaumburg?

As a Schaumburg homeowner comparing roofing materials, remember local factors: cold, snowy winters with frequent freeze–thaw cycles and notable snow loads, plus periodic hail and wind storms that affect roof and mount longevity. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar when custom solar brackets are installed by Interlock Metal Roofing - Midwest, and the systems are designed to support solar mounting solutions. Roof lifespan matters: long‑lasting materials are preferred before adding panels, and homeowners should plan for future solar when replacing a roof to avoid rework. Given Schaumburg’s roughly 35 in. annual snowfall, anchoring and freeze‑thaw durability are important when selecting mounts and materials.
