Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Charlestown

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Charlestown often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Charlestown may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

In Charlestown a properly installed metal roof commonly lasts 50–75+ years, while asphalt roofs typically have shorter lifespans (often 15–30 years). Charlestown’s waterfront exposure brings coastal moisture and salt spray plus powerful Nor’easters with heavy snow, wind and freeze–thaw cycles—conditions that accelerate corrosion, ice dams and wear on lower-grade materials. Metal roofing resists salt corrosion, sheds snow, tolerates wind uplift and needs less maintenance than asphalt, so homeowners choosing long-term value often pick durable metal systems despite higher upfront cost. Interlock Metal Roofing uses heavy‑gauge aluminum panels and is backed by a lifetime limited 50‑year transferable warranty designed for long‑term protection in coastal New England conditions.
Metal roofs in Charlestown, MA typically cost more upfront than asphalt shingles. Final price depends on roof size, slope, and complexity (hips, valleys, dormers), plus tear-off and disposal, flashing and skylight work, and local labor. Local construction factors—permit requirements, building codes, labor rates, and seasonal weather—also influence installation cost in Charlestown. Many homeowners compare roofing options based on lifetime value rather than initial price: metal systems generally have higher initial cost but longer service life, lower maintenance, and greater resistance to wind, ice, and fire, which can reduce future repair and replacement expenses. Choosing a durable roofing system can therefore lower total long-term ownership costs. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long-term ownership value and performance rather than competing as a low-cost roofing option.
Charlestown faces cold, snowy winters, nor’easters, and persistent coastal moisture—conditions that drive freeze–thaw cycles, salt spray and occasional high winds—so roofing choice matters locally. Lifespan: Metal roofs often last 40–70+ years; asphalt shingles typically 15–30 years. Maintenance: metal generally needs less routine care (inspections, fastener checks); shingles require more frequent repairs, patching, and eventual replacement. Durability: metal sheds snow, resists wind uplift and salt corrosion better; asphalt can suffer granule loss, curling from UV and repeated freeze–thaw. Long-term value: higher upfront cost for metal is offset by longer service life and lower life-cycle costs for homeowners planning to stay long-term. Homeowners prioritizing durability and long-term protection often choose metal roofing. Interlock Metal Roofing systems appeal because interlocking panels improve water resistance, wind performance and offer lasting architectural curb appeal.
This is a common myth: metal roofs in Charlestown, MA are noisy when it rains. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking with proper underlayment and insulation do not sound like barn roofs. Sound depends on the roof assembly—insulation, attic space, underlayment, and ventilation all reduce impact noise—so a well-built metal roof is comparable in rain sound to asphalt shingles or tile. Installation quality matters: secure fasteners, continuous decking, and thermal/acoustic layers cut vibration and noise. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete residential roofing systems designed to control weather and sound. Properly installed metal roofs are typically similar in sound to other roofing materials.
Yes. In Charlestown, MA, a metal roof can be energy efficient. Metal roofing reflects sunlight, reducing summer heat gain when paired with reflective finishes and appropriate color choices. However, overall energy performance depends on the complete roof assembly, including insulation levels, air sealing, underlayment, and attic ventilation, plus correct installation. Charlestown’s New England climate—cold winters and warm, humid summers—means reflectivity can cut cooling loads, but insulation and airtightness drive winter savings. Homeowners researching roof replacement often consider energy efficiency to lower heating and cooling costs, improve comfort, qualify for incentives or rebates, and increase resale appeal. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered to work with proper roof assemblies and are designed to support long-term home performance.
Q: How does metal roofing perform in Charlestown, MA severe weather? A: Charlestown faces coastal storms, Nor’easters, strong onshore winds and increasing coastal flood risk—conditions that stress roofs and cause wind-driven rain, snow and occasional hail. Properly designed and installed metal roofing sheds snow and rain, resists wind uplift, and can withstand hail better than many materials; actual performance depends on roofing system design, installation quality, and material durability. Homeowners weigh weather resilience to reduce leak, repair and replacement risk. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection, and wind resistance, but benefits require correct attachment, underlayment and flashing. Inspect fasteners and flashing after major events and choose materials and installers rated for local wind and hail conditions.
Metal roofing performance depends on the type of metal used; steel, copper, and aluminum each behave differently in terms of corrosion and rust. Some materials—like aluminum—are inherently more resistant to corrosion and are especially well suited to wet or coastal environments such as Charlestown, MA, because they form a protective oxide layer and do not rust like iron‑based steels. Homeowners should prioritize corrosion resistance when choosing roofing to maximize service life, reduce maintenance and repair costs, prevent leaks and staining, and protect home value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminum construction designed for strong corrosion resistance and are further protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection. Choosing corrosion‑resistant materials helps avoid premature replacement in Massachusetts’ variable weather.
Metal roofing in Charlestown, Massachusetts is generally a low‑maintenance choice: durable, long‑lasting, and resistant to rot and insect damage. However, no roof is completely maintenance‑free. Homeowners should inspect their metal roofs periodically—after major storms and seasonally—to check for accumulated debris, clogged gutters, loose or damaged flashing, and compromised roof penetrations (vents, chimneys, skylights). Coastal weather, Nor’easters, freeze–thaw cycles and seasonal leaf or pine debris can increase wear or trap moisture, so address buildup and minor repairs promptly. With routine visual checks, prompt gutter cleaning, and occasional fastening or sealant upkeep, a metal roof will perform reliably and stay low‑maintenance for decades in Charlestown’s climate.
In Charlestown, MA, metal roofing can increase home value because buyers often prioritize durable, low‑maintenance roofs that reduce future repair costs. Premium roofing materials also boost curb appeal—important in historic and walkable Charlestown neighborhoods—helping homes stand out to buyers. A metal roof’s long lifespan improves buyer confidence, as fewer near‑term replacements are anticipated. Architectural style still matters: matching the roof profile to a neighborhood’s character preserves appeal and resale potential. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles—slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake, and standing seam—available in heavy‑gauge aluminum and solid copper, letting homeowners choose looks that respect local style while delivering longevity and low maintenance. This combination can make metal roofing a worthwhile investment for Charlestown sellers and buyers.
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are compatible with solar installations when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing – New England. In Charlestown, coastal salt moisture and coastal storms plus seasonal freeze–thaw cycles and occasional snow loads can accelerate corrosion and stress mounting hardware, so corrosion‑resistant brackets and proper flashing are important. Roof lifespan matters: because solar arrays are long‑lived, homeowners should choose long‑lasting roofing materials and consider future solar plans when replacing a roof to avoid removing panels later. Interlock systems are solar‑compatible and designed to support solar mounting solutions, making them a preferred, durable choice for this coastal New England setting.

Interlock Metal Shingle Roof Review in Bay View, WI (Installed 2009)

April 15, 2026

I had Interlock put on a beautiful red slate roof 17 years ago.The roof still looks beautiful. 5 years ago, I had them also re-roof my garage with the same type of slate. The roofs look gorgeous and I have no maintenance whatsoever.I get complements all the time. The guy whom I contracted with was named "Tim' but has since died. He was a really nice guy. Back in 2009, the roof was much cheaper. ( I actually paid more for the garage 5 years ago!) I am extremely happy with the roofs. The guys did a wonderful job, replacing rotted boards where necessary. They also told me about very cheap gutters I could buy at Menards instead of those ridiculously - priced "special" gutter systems. I bought them and they placed them on my buildings. This home will go to my daughter one day; I do not want her to have to lift a finger. Note that I had an asphalt roof previously. It lasted only 12 years. The shingles curled up under the sun and cracked. They looked terrible. I can honestly say that these metals roofs by Interlock are very much worth what you pay for them. They will last a lifetime with almost no maintenance. Instead of replacing a roof every 15 years and paying lots for asphalt or fiberglass, their metal roofs last very long and you will never have to re- roof again.

Interlock Metal Roofing Review in Saint Paul, AB — 50-Year Warranty (Installed 2025)

April 14, 2026

We recently installed a new Interlock Roofing System, and we couldn’t be happier with the decision. Knowing it’s backed by a limited lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable 50-year warranty gives us real peace of mind—it truly feels like a smart long-term investment. Mr. Yorman and his crew were outstanding from start to finish. Their commitment to customer service is second to none. They showed up exactly when they said they would and worked diligently until the job was completed. The finished product looks fantastic, and the cleanup was so thorough that our property actually looked better than before they arrived. A special mention to Tyler, who did an excellent job walking us through the benefits and helping us feel confident in choosing this system. Overall, a great experience and highly recommended!

Interlock Metal Shingle Roof & Snow Guards Review — Owen Sound, ON (Installed 2017)

We installed an Interlock roof in 2017. The roof is still like new. Due to an insulation issue and snow depth of over 4 feet, we had an ice build up problem. Ken, Greg and Cheri provided consultation and prompt service in addressing the addition of snow guards. Their knowledgable and friendly service was greatly appreciated. We highly recommend both the product and the team.

Interlock Metal Roof Review - Burnaby, BC Metal Roofing (Installed 2024)

April 13, 2026

I recently had my 25 year old asphalt roof replaced with an Interlock Metal roof. I'm so very happy with my decision. In fact, best decision ever to have Interlock Industries install. The metal roof is manufactured in Delta, BC and they have their own installers. It's not panels! It looks very much like a cedar roof! Colour is awesome as well! My home is located in Victoria on Vancouver Island and looks great with my new roof! Interlock is a very professional business from contract signing to installation. Amazing crew that gets the job done in a timely manner. My roof looks fabulous. It's a work of art!!

Aurora, ON Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Installation (2016)

April 12, 2026

We moved into our new house in 1984. Our new house came with new 25 year shingles. In 2004, 20 years later we noticed that our roof shingles needed to be redone. Now, back in 1984 they used asbestos in the roof shingles and although at the time they said they were 25 year shingles, we were still happy to get 20 years out of them. So, in 2004 we got a quote and had the roof re-shingled. We paid extra for the 25 year shingles as we had such a good result with the original shingles. In 2016 (i.e. 12 years later) my neighbour told us that our shingles on the south side of the house were cracked with rolled up edges and needed to be replaced. (We can't see the south roof of our house unless we are visiting the neighbours.) The shingles on the north side were still ok, but since you can't really shingle half a roof we knew that we had to have the whole roof done...after just 12 years. We were a little upset about this and decided to go to the National Home Show in Toronto to look at alternatives. We met Tom Watson at the Interlock Metal Roofing booth and he took a lot of time and explained the complete roofing system to us. We liked what we saw and what was explained to us and we arranged to have a home visit from Interlock and to give us a quote. The metal roof was certainly a lot more expensive than a regular asphalt shingle roof, but we decided to get the metal roof anyways because we did not want the hassle of having to re-shingle every 10 or 11 years...and there are also some other unforeseen benefits detailed below that we did not know about at the time. The metal roof comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty, 50 year transferable, not prorated so even though more expensive it adds value to lyour home because if in the future you are looking to sell, the buyer knows he won't have any roof problems for the 50 year life of the roof. Your roof becomes an asset instead of a liability. The installation happened over 4-5 days. I paid a lot of attention to what they were doing and how they were doing it. The roof vents were removed. These are the same roof vents that raccoons like to rip off for access to your attic, so that potential problem went away. A ridge vent (google it) was installed on the top of the roof and it is low profile and fits in so you would not know that it is there. Raccoons have been known to chew a hole in asphalt shingles and roofing plywood to get into your attic. With a metal roof, it isn't happening. That mode of access is eliminated. Now, with our previous asphalt shingles we had constant problems with raccoons pooping on our roof (sound familiar?) and for some reason, at least for the last 10 years that we have had the metal roof, that has not happened. I don't know why, but I can speculate that the raccoons find the metal roof very slippery and they are not comfortable being up there and doing their business while trying not to slide off the roof. Also, in the past we have had squirrels occasionally make their way through, under, beside our asphalt shingles and get into our attic. That will never happen with a metal roof because the whole roof is sealed and northing is getting that way. If you are concerned about high winds ripping off your shingles you don't have to worry with a metal roof. Each and every metal shingle is fastened to the roof with aluminum screws (note the metal roof shingles are painted and baked to a tough finish) and they are interlocked with each other, so you may lose your entire roof in a hurricane, but the metal shingles will still be attached to it. We moved into our new house in 1984. After about 2 years of sweating through humid summers, we installed an A/C system. Our new A/C system worked ok in that it removed the humidity and cooled the house, but with the high 37 deg C temperatures it was struggling. The A/C would run continuously and never stopped on those hot days, but once the metal roof was installed it cycled on and off as designed. We highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing.

Willowbrook, IL Metal Roof Review — Interlock Roofing (Installed 2016)

April 11, 2026

We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
