Interlok Reps came across as high-pressured and as if trying to 'pull fast ones', like:----Demanding all homeowners be present for sales pitch, though I assured him we'd already been shown the product, only needed estimate and verification of materials; then if it looked feasible, then paperwork. ----Entire sales pitch felt high-pressured. ----We clearly and repeatedly stated, Interlok was far beyond our means to afford or finance, after they'd quoted prices, yet Reps continued to high-pressure and jig-figures by small amounts. ----Rep pulled out contract papers, despite being told we can't afford this; papers looked as if we needed a legal team to read and edit them, to have ANY hope of legal protections.Reps said a few things which conflicted with other statements in their pitch, as well as some bordering on sounding like scamming, like: ==="Standing seam roofing has fasteners that show"; Despite indicating our better-than-average knowledge of roofing and building, Reps emphatically tried to convince us of other metal roofing's inferiority by mis-stating facts, then changing subject. ==="Must include permit cost"; Our County does NOT require permit to replace roofing unless framing/structure needs fixed--ours does not: the roof deck is NOT considered structure for purposes of re-roofing. ==="We can roof-over the existing 2 layers of shingles to save you a big chunk off the price" ;But this was still more than double the cost of standing-seam; and, CODE:requires "must remove all old roofing if there is more than one layer of old roofing"...He knew this Code requirement to start with, stating it clearly at the beginning, then tried to buffalo us that we could get away without removing old roofing, after it was made clear to him YET AGAIN, that cost was crucial, and that we could NOT afford this: Conclusions: 1. He intended to bait-and-switch, and/or do an illegal job. 2. If he so easily used these tactics, what else was lied about or misled about?Cost, function and honesty trump Cosmetics. Notes re: realty/housing industries in general:The Interlok Reps came on the heals of our being sold a money-pit. We'd already gone deep into debt to repair/replace basic infrastructure which should have been done before being put on the market. Realtors and affiliated industries extensively use deceptive descriptives and practices to artificially pump prices, all over three counties we looked in; this was the best one we could find, and it was misrepresented and over-priced. The cunning, clever ways the various industries work together regarding real estate, allows each separate industry to appear mostly guiltless. "House flippers" routinely cover up infrastructure issues with cosmetics, and make more mistakes of their own which also need fixed. "Instant equity" appears to be a housing industry Secret Code for: "this is how much we KNOW it will take to fix things we're not telling buyers about, which can't be seen by inspectors buyers pay for, or items which are marginal or fall through Code cracks". Honesty, accountability and responsibility take a back-seat to getting fast money, at most levels, at least to some degrees. Better changes need made, but in today's sick business climate, that's not likely to happen fast enough to prevent more new homeowners losing their homes related to these issues. Too many industries, in every sector, have predatory and/or destructive practices which they continue to rationalize and excuse, to maintain business-as-usual. We'd also already been blitzed with questionable to shady contractors prior to Interlok Reps arrival, therefore sensitized to any hints of questionable business practices. More varieties of contractors and businesses have been knocking on our door and spamming our mail since then.
