Review: October 13, 2016Completion: September 30, 2016

because we had a copper roof installed, there were delays in delivery and start-up which should have been addressed by you phoning me, but i kept having to phone you. the crew was excellent, but there were several days when they could have used more help and the job could have been completed sooner. it was supposed to begin in early august and be completed in 7-10 days. it began in late august and took close to five weeks to complete. i now understand that this is the first copper roof you've done on a small house and that you are using it in advertising. given the unusual circumstances, i think you could have supplied a full crew and kept us informed of delays ahead of time.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Antigonish

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Antigonish.

Will a metal roof hold up through Antigonish's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes. Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature swings, but the material does not absorb moisture, so it won't crack, rot, or delaminate the way asphalt shingles and wood do over your region's roughly 90 freeze-thaw days per year. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is designed for exactly these conditions—the oxide layer self-heals when scratched, and the four-way interlocking panels stay sealed even through repeated thermal cycling. The 30-year Alunar coating warranty guarantees no chalking or fading as temperatures swing through the seasons.

How does metal roofing handle heavy snow loads in Nova Scotia?

Interlock metal roofing sheds snow effectively because its smooth surface and panel interlocks shed water quickly and prevent ice dams—a major advantage in a region that averages about 210 cm of snow annually. The system's weight varies by profile: the Cedar Shingle at 0.41 lb/sq ft installs without structural reinforcement, meaning your existing roof deck supports it without upgrades. The four-way interlocking panels also allow you to add snow guards where needed. Combined with proper ventilation, metal roofing typically outperforms asphalt in snow retention and melt cycles.

Can a metal roof withstand the coastal wind gusts Antigonish experiences?

Absolutely. Your region sees typical gusts near 140 km/h, and Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to spec. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels create a continuous locked seam that resists uplift far better than shingles. This design, combined with proper fastening into the deck, means a metal roof will remain secure during the strongest North Shore storms. Class 4 hail rating (UL 2218) covers impact perforation up to 1.5 inches, giving you protection against both wind and the occasional severe weather event.

Does metal roofing leak in heavy rain like Antigonish gets?

No. Interlock metal roofing sheds the roughly 1071 mm of annual rainfall your area receives because water runs off the interlocked panels—they don't absorb moisture the way asphalt does. The four-way panel locks, combined with proper underlayment and flashing installed to ICC-ES ESR-1790 code, create a tight weather barrier. Metal's hard surface doesn't degrade under rain the way asphalt granules wash away. Over a 50-year lifespan, the sealed panel system remains leak-free without the seasonal maintenance asphalt requires.

Why is aluminum better than steel roofing for coastal Nova Scotia?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Instead, it forms a self-healing oxide layer that protects the metal beneath. In salt-air environments like coastal Nova Scotia, this is a decisive advantage over steel roofing, which requires constant maintenance to prevent rust streaking and structural degradation. Interlock panels use roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) with a dual-sided Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish—applied to both top and underside for extra protection against corrosion. Your Guardian Warranty explicitly covers rusting, so you're protected for the original owner's lifetime.

What's the real lifespan of a metal roof, and what does the warranty cover?

The Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner—covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's also one-time transferable to the next owner for 50 years from completion, which is exceptional in the roofing industry. Installed since 1998 and deployed from coastal homes to Antarctic research stations, Interlock aluminum has a proven track record exceeding 25 years in real conditions. With the Alunar coating warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214 measured), this is the last roof you'll buy.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?

No. The Mediterranean Tile profile weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so no structural reinforcement is needed. Even the heavier Shake profile at 0.58 lb/sq ft is negligible compared to traditional materials. Most existing roofs can support Interlock metal roofing without upgrades, which means you can often install it directly over your current asphalt without tearing off the old roof first. This dramatically cuts labor costs and keeps waste out of the landfill while preserving your home's structural integrity.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really need?

Virtually none compared to asphalt or wood. Asphalt requires regular granule inspection, patching, and replacement every 15–20 years; wood shakes need periodic treatment and replacement of rotted sections. Interlock aluminum resists rotting, splitting, and curling by design. Rain—about 1071 mm annually in Antigonish—naturally cleans the surface. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating (30-year warranty) won't chalk or fade, so you won't need repainting. A quick inspection after severe weather and occasional gutter cleaning are all that's needed to keep your roof performing for decades.

Will my insurance rates drop with a Class 4 hail-rated metal roof?

Many insurers offer discounts for UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated roofing. Interlock metal roofing carries the highest hail rating available, with warranty coverage for perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. In Antigonish, severe hail is less frequent than freeze-thaw cycles (roughly 90 annually), but when it occurs, your aluminum roof is protected. Contact your insurer about premium reductions; many will lower your homeowner's policy because claims for hail damage are virtually eliminated. This payback, combined with the roof's 50-year lifespan, often offsets the initial cost.

Is metal roofing really worth the upfront cost in Nova Scotia?

Yes, over the roof's full life. An asphalt roof lasts 15–20 years and requires tear-off, disposal, and reinstallation costs each cycle. Interlock metal roofing lasts 50+ years and installs over most existing roofs, eliminating expensive tear-offs. Over 60 years, you'll replace asphalt 3–4 times; metal replaces asphalt once. Current regional promotion includes interest-free payments for 3 months and savings of at least $2499 on installation. The Guardian Warranty's transferable 50-year coverage and no-rust aluminum mean lower lifetime maintenance. In Antigonish's 1071 mm annual rainfall and 210 cm snow, durability compounds savings.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Antigonish’s climate?

Yes. Antigonish averages about 210 cm of snow, 1071 mm of rain, roughly 90 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 140 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
