We hired Maritime Permanent Roofing (an Interlock Roofing company) to install a new metal roof. A lot of metal roofs that get installed are steel "barn-board" roofs that are screwed down. If you can't see the fasteners, you've installed a better quality roof called "standing seam". So we were trying to decide between standing seam and metal shingles. In the end, we decided we liked the look of shingles better, so we went that route. What differentiates MPR from other roofers is that they use aluminum (which oxidizes with a protective coating, rather than rusting, like steel). Living in a province where you're not too far from the ocean in any direction, this was important to us. So our first contact with the company was with "Greg" who handles the sales. He was quick to give us a quote (for "slate" shingles in a "musket grey", one of 9 colour options). I'm not going to lie to you, it wasn't cheap. We live in a large bungalow, so with a 5000+ sq.ft roof the costs add up quickly. Asphalt shingles would have been less than half the price, but we knew we were installing solar panels, so asphalt was not an option (asphalt shingles just don't last like they used to... they are made more cheaply, using less asphalt and more fiberglass). So we signed the contract and were given a start date of 2 months out. Our next contact was with "Chris" (Greg's brother... yes, it's a family business). He is the operations manager. Both Greg and Chris were laid-back and easy to talk to and generally seemed like nice/good people. I'm always happy when I hire good people. Chris showed up the first week of November to deliver all the materials to site and he informed me that the install crew would arrive on the weekend to start the job. So on Sunday Nov.7th "Janner", the installation foreman, and his crew showed up. They were a crew of 6 men!! As we have a large complicated roof with multiple dormers, many ridges and valleys and multiple facets with several different roof pitches, it wasn't a job for amateurs. Janner and company were very friendly and willing to answer questions openly, and they were very professional. Everyone in the crew had been formally trained by the parent Interlock company (which is based in British Columbia) and they had been installing Interlock Roofing for over 10 years, so they knew what they were doing. Luckily, the weather was good (for the most part) and they finished the job in 4 days. We are quite happy with our new roof, which has now prepared us to install solar panels. Greg, Chris and Janner were all good people and all professionals. I highly recommend MPR if you are considering installing a metal roof. I'm quite sure an aluminum shingle roof will outlast a steel barn-board roof, but I will update this review in a couple/few years to report on how the roof is holding up and whether or not there are any leaks. ps: Interlock Roofing is a Canadian company, who designs and manufactures their own aluminum shingles, they even make their own ringed aluminum nails.

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality We had a metal roof installed on my home and shed using the copper penny cedar shingle product. We are not only impressed with the product but also the installation. The installers were a father-and-son duo and were very meticulous. They took three full days to complete the job. We could not be more pleased with the result. Service: Roof installation

We love our new roof and have no regrets. The installers were professional and very conscientious and didn’t leave any mess behind. We love the look of the new roof and have had many compliments from neighbors. But the best part is no longer having to worry about the roof during periods of heavy wind!

Review: October 19, 2009 Completion: September 3, 2009

We are pleased to have our new roof installed by Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. It certainly enhances the value and looks of our home. It is a great relief not to have to think about replacing another roof with the fifty-year warranty. Ted Rector was of great assistance to us helping us choose the type of roof and answering all our questions. He is a professional and went over and above what was necessary to accommodate our needs. The roofers did a professional job installing the roof and cleaning up after the roof was completed. Neighbours have spoken about our roof and many passing cars have slowed down when they have seen the sign to view our roof.

I just wanted to follow-up with you to let you know how pleased Kathy and I are with our new roof. While we were in the market last year for a new roof we had not considered a permanent roof until we met you at the Dartmouth Market. We both appreciate the time that you took in our follow-up meeting to provide more information and to explain the product in more depth. At no time did we ever feel pressured to purchase. The installation was excellent as they took the time to answer all of my questions and to explain the installation process. They cleaned up after each day and ensured that we were completely satisfied before signing off. It has been several months since the installation and we have been through our first winter. As you noted when explaining the product, the new roof has addressed the concerns I have had over the years with the build-up of snow on my roof. The product looks great and has resulted in a number of inquiries and compliments from passersby.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Halifax

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Halifax.

Why won't an aluminum metal roof rust in Halifax's salt air and wet climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes and corrodes. Instead, aluminum forms a self-healing oxide layer that instantly seals any scratch or cut, providing permanent protection even in coastal salt environments. With Halifax receiving about 1325 mm of rain annually and frequent gusts to 139 km/h that can expose edges, this non-corrosive chemistry means your roof won't degrade the way steel does. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating—applied to both sides—adds an extra 30-year barrier against weathering, making corrosion a non-issue here.

How does an aluminum roof hold up through Halifax's freeze-thaw cycles?

Halifax experiences roughly 90 freeze-thaw days per year, and aluminum's thermal properties actually work in your favor. The roofing-grade 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum alloy expands and contracts predictably without cracking, splitting, or losing structural integrity the way asphalt, wood, and clay tile do. The four-way interlocking panel design accommodates micro-movement while staying locked tight, preventing water infiltration during the thousands of thermal cycles over decades. Combined with the material's ability to shed ice quickly due to its smooth, low-friction surface, your roof remains secure through every thaw-refreeze sequence Halifax winters deliver.

Do I need snow guards on a metal roof, and how does it handle Halifax's annual snowfall?

Halifax averages about 144 cm of snow per year, and aluminum's light weight and smooth surface actually reduce snow load stress on your structure compared to asphalt or tile. Snow tends to shed more readily from metal, especially in the sun—the material won't trap ice dams the way darker asphalt does. Snow guards are often unnecessary but available if you want extra control in valleys or near walkways. The four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind gusts up to 139 km/h, so even heavy, wind-driven snow won't lift or separate the roof when installed to spec. Your installer, Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd., can assess your specific roof pitch and Halifax exposure during a site visit.

Can a metal roof stand up to Halifax's coastal storms and wind gusts?

Halifax coastal storms often generate gusts to 139 km/h, and Interlock metal roofs are warranted to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together in all directions, distributing wind load across the entire roof assembly rather than relying on nails that can fail. This engineering gives you genuine storm protection without compromise. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms compliance with modern building codes for wind uplift, and Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. has been installing these systems across the Halifax Region since 2007, understanding local wind exposure and proper fastening requirements firsthand.

What's the hail rating on Interlock metal roofing, and will it help my insurance?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest hail classification available—and is even warranted against perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. The roofing-grade aluminum alloy and four-way interlocking design absorb impact energy without denting or cracking, unlike asphalt or tile. Some insurers recognize this superior impact resistance and offer discounts on premiums; discuss your specific policy with your agent when you're ready to install. The Guardian warranty covers impact damage, giving you documented protection and peace of mind during storm season. Over Halifax's average 144 cm snowfall and variable spring weather, this durability translates to zero hail-related repairs or claims.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile installs at just 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—while the Cedar Shingle weighs only 0.41 lb/sq ft. Most homes built to current codes easily support this weight, and because aluminum requires no structural upgrades, installation costs stay low and timeline stays short. You can install over your existing roof in many cases, avoiding expensive tear-off labor. The light weight also means less strain on fasteners and underlayment during Halifax's frequent wind gusts (average 20 km/h with peaks to 139 km/h), reducing the mechanical stress that shortens roof life. Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. will confirm your structure during their site assessment.

What's the warranty on an Interlock metal roof, and does it transfer if I sell?

The Guardian is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rust, rot, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's one-time transferable to the next owner, giving them 50 years of coverage from completion. This means your roof is covered for life, and buyers get five decades of protected ownership. No other roofing material—asphalt, wood, tile—comes close to this security. Over Halifax's 90 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 1325 mm rainfall, the combination of non-corrosive aluminum, the 30-year Alunar coating warranty, and the four-way interlocking design ensures your roof performs through decades of weather. Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. can walk you through every term.

How does Interlock handle Halifax's heavy rainfall and prevent leaks?

Halifax receives about 1325 mm of rain per year, and Interlock's four-way interlocking panel design sheds water faster than the overlap-and-nail method used on asphalt or wood shakes. Each panel locks on all four sides, creating a continuous, overlap-sealed surface with zero fastener holes exposed to the weather. Water flows straight off and away from seams. The ICC-ES evaluation (ESR-1790) confirms leak resistance across building codes, and the solid deck and underlayment system (installed by Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd.) provides a secondary water barrier that asphalt simply cannot match. Combined with proper flashing at valleys, penetrations, and edges, you get bulletproof protection through Halifax's wet springs, coastal rain, and heavy precipitation—without the degradation asphalt suffers after five to ten years.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really need?

Virtually none. Interlock aluminum roofs require no annual inspections, no nail pops to repair, no moss or algae treatment, and no granule loss like asphalt. You won't power-wash, re-seal, or replace individual shingles. The roofing-grade aluminum alloy and Alunar 70% PVDF coating are CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, meeting California's strict sustainability standards. Halifax's ~2671 sunshine hours per year and frequent rain naturally rinse the roof clean, while the self-healing oxide layer protects against salt spray and industrial corrosion. Over a 50-year lifespan versus asphalt's 15–20 years, your maintenance cost is zero, and you'll never spend a weekend on a ladder patching leaks. This freedom is part of the value proposition that makes metal roofing the last roof you'll buy.

Is a metal roof actually better for the environment than asphalt?

Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable, and Interlock panels manufactured in Delta, BC are engineered for end-of-life reclamation—no landfill at the end of a 50-year lifespan. By contrast, every asphalt shingle tear-off in Halifax contributes to landfill waste; most communities don't recycle torn shingles, so they accumulate. Over your roof's life, choosing aluminum means zero tear-off waste per installation, lower overall material consumption, and real recycling value at the end. The lightweight aluminum also reduces transportation emissions compared to shipping heavy slate, tile, or clay. energy-efficient colors with up to 0.55 initial solar reflectance and 0.84 thermal emissivity further lower cooling loads during warmer months. The combination of durability (avoiding replacement), recyclability, and energy efficiency makes Interlock a genuinely sustainable alternative to the asphalt-to-landfill cycle.
