Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Cambridge, Ontario
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |

What our customers are saying:
We did not receive the product sold to us and the company's response was to offer a compromise solution which was not what we otherwise would have chosen had we known this at the time of signing a contract. When the product availability issue arose (because the company does not have the product we were sold and as is listed in their product availability materials) we were advised that a dispute would very likely result in a lien being placed on the property regardless of the fact that the company had created the problem. 1. They could support their sales team by having product availability properly portrayed in their sales support materials so customers actually know what is and is not available 2. They could adopt an approach to problem resolution when they create a problem by not being able to deliver what their sales support materials indicate is available by considering the issues they have caused from the customers perspective and working to satisfy the customers valid issues as opposed to their cost issues which they have created The product installed is a nice product. The experience was very unsatisfactory. This was the first major step in a significant renovation of a historic home and we did not get what was sold to us. We ended up with a compromise solution, really pushed on us as the only alternative the company would support after creating an issue by indicating product was available when in fact the product did not exist. Not a good customer experience and a very unfortunate start to an otherwise exciting restoration project.
The quality is excellent the only reason for 4 out of 5 scores is the price. I really think if you improve on that you would see more interlock roofs
Can not think of anything they could have done better. Your sign as been up for a few months now so I would like it picked up soon.
They are a great company! The people working there are very respectful.
Communication regarding delivery and schedule. The only other problem was that we had a one man crew and I felt obligated to be on the premises for safety reasons.
Excellent from start to finish! Our roof consultant, Bob was very thorough and very knowledgeable which gave us added confidence that we had made the right decision after all our research. The installer, Jeremy did an Excellent job of making sure we were happy with the end product. Jeremy takes great pride in his work and holds himself to a very high standard for his workmanship. It was great to see Bob during the installation and after the job was finished, making sure we were happy with the process and the end result. Excellent quality product and installation. The roof looks amazing!! Highly recommend Intetlock roof to any one looking for a superior quality roof and excellent follow up service.
Starting the project quicker, is my only suggestion.
They could've improved on the initial customer contact.
They really need to have someone in the office to answer questions that is knowledgeable about things.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Cambridge
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Cambridge, Ontario. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Cambridge.
How does a metal roof handle Cambridge's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?
Metal roofs shed snow better than asphalt because the smooth, hard surface prevents adhesion and ice dam formation. Cambridge gets about 107 cm of snow annually and experiences roughly 88 freeze-thaw days per year—conditions that crack and curl asphalt shingles. Aluminum's four-way interlocking panels create a unified surface with no seams where ice can lodge. The light weight (Shingle profile at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural risk from accumulated snow, and the panels won't warp or split as freeze-thaw cycles repeat season after season.
Why can't aluminum roofing rust, and why does that matter in Ontario?
Aluminum contains no iron, so it cannot rust—period. Instead, it forms a protective oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, giving it an inherent advantage over steel in wet climates. Cambridge receives about 779 mm of rain yearly plus snowmelt, creating constant moisture. Steel roofing corrodes from the inside out once coatings fail. Interlock's 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum alloy, combined with the Alunar 70% PVDF coating warranted 30 years against chalking, creates two independent barriers. Even in salt-air environments, this material has performed since 1998 without rust concerns.
Will freeze-thaw damage a metal roof over time?
No. Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature swings, but it returns to its exact original dimension without cracking, splitting, or losing integrity. Cambridge's 88 annual freeze-thaw days would devastate asphalt (which becomes brittle in cold) and wood shakes (which split along the grain). Aluminum's crystalline structure and the Alunar coating's flexibility mean stress doesn't accumulate. The four-way interlocking system accommodates movement without creating stress points. After 25+ years in similar climates across Canada and Antarctica, Interlock panels show no freeze-thaw damage.
Can a metal roof stand up to Ontario wind gusts?
Yes—the four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Cambridge's typical gusts reach about 115 km/h, well within the rating. Wind-driven rain and ice pellets won't lift panels because the interlocking geometry creates mechanical grip, not reliance on sealant. The system is code-compliant per ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790, which covers IBC and IRC standards across Canada. Traditional asphalt shingles, held down only by nails and adhesive, fail in sustained 100+ km/h winds; metal's interlocking design ensures no uplift.
Does metal roofing help with hail damage and insurance?
Interlock metal roofing carries the highest hail impact rating available—UL 2218 Class 4—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That's real, documented impact resistance, not a promise. Many insurers recognize this durability and offer premium discounts on metal roofs because claim frequency drops. Cambridge's climate doesn't highlight hail as a primary concern, but the Class 4 rating is permanent; asphalt shingles downgrade continuously as they age. When you file a claim for hail damage on an aging asphalt roof, insurers often deny it citing wear. Metal's performance is age-independent.
Can a reflective metal roof actually lower cooling costs?
energy-efficient Interlock colors reflect more solar heat than asphalt absorbs, thanks to thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and initial solar reflectance to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny). Cambridge enjoys about 2970 annual sunshine hours, and while cooling demand is moderate compared to southern climates, every bit of solar reflection reduces HVAC load during warmer months. The Cool Roof Rating Council verification confirms measurable performance. On a 200 sq ft roof, that reflectance compounds across the year. Asphalt roofs, by contrast, absorb heat and transfer it into the attic, raising interior temperatures and running costs.
What maintenance does a metal roof actually need?
Virtually none compared to asphalt, wood, or clay tile. No algae growth, no moss, no curling or cracking to repair, no granule loss to clear from gutters. Cambridge's 779 mm annual rainfall and 107 cm snow will slide off without degrading the surface. The Alunar coating is warranted 30 years against fading and chalking (ASTM D4214 / D2244), so repainting isn't needed. Occasional gutter cleaning is standard for any roof. Wood shakes require regular treatment and inspection; asphalt shingles need spot repairs every 5-7 years; clay tile cracks and must be replaced individually. Metal's only maintenance is visual inspection every few years—a 10-minute job.
Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost over a 40-year lifespan?
Yes. The Guardian Warranty covers the original owner for life and transfers 50 years to the next owner, making this literally your last roof. Over 40 years, asphalt shingles require 3-4 full replacements (roughly $8,000–$12,000 per cycle in Ontario), plus repairs, maintenance, and gutter damage from granule loss. Metal roofing costs more initially but eliminates the tear-off-to-landfill cycle entirely; the aluminum is 95% recyclable. Current promotion includes interest-free payments for 3 months and at least $2,499 savings. Factor in zero maintenance, no insurance claims for impact damage, potential premium discounts, and energy savings, and metal's total cost of ownership is lower over 40 years.
Can I install metal tile on my existing roof without reinforcing the structure?
Yes. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so no structural reinforcement is needed. Your existing roof can carry it. This is a game-changer for older Cambridge homes where adding real tile would require expensive framing upgrades. The light weight also means faster installation and less labor cost. You can install directly over existing asphalt shingles (confirmed per ESR-1790), avoiding expensive tear-off and disposal. Compare that to slate or clay, which demand structural engineering and thousands in bracing—metal delivers the authentic look without the burden.
