Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Toronto, Ontario
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Had a metal roof installed a couple of years ago and love it. Had some issues lately and Ken (service technician and great guy) came to see the problem. He checked the roof and found no issues there. He then asked if he could go into the attic to have a look. When in the attic he noticed a few things including some missing insulation over the area that was having the issue. He re-spread the insulation and did a few other things as well which he thinks may resolve the problem. They also suggested adding a solar vent to move more air in the attic and came the next day to install it. Hopefully the problem is now resolved and I know that the roof is secure and also know that should I need more service they will promptly return. If considering a metal roof, contract these good folks!
A few weeks ago during a violent wind storm, a very big branch from our maple tree fell on our roof damaging the eaves trough and our roof. Brad and his group did an excellent job repairing the damage They also installed metal snow guards at all the critical locations as the previous guards were plastic and many of them were broken. This was over and above the roof repairs. This is a great product. From a distance it is very good looking. I highly recommend this product and the installation staff. Positive: Quality, Professionalism Services: Roof repair for storm & wind damage
I recommend Interlock completely and without reservation. Honestly, I can't think of anything on which they could improve. It was honestly one of the best experiences I've had in dealing with any home improvement needs. I recommend them without reservation!
The finished product speaks for itself, recommends itself. Before installation my neighbour was skeptical, mentioning that leaks would be difficult to detect if they developed. However he changed his mind after completion, when it was pointed out that 4 of the 6 days required for installation was spent prepping the roof surface (virtually insuring no future leakage) then 2 days actually laying the tiles. If anyone wants a recommendation I would be happy to comply.
I wish it could be cheaper. I highly recommend the product!
There was very bad communication. Interlock Roofing installed a lovely roof though. Interlock Roofing can improve their communication. They should have called me with the start date of the project, when there was a problem during the project, to follow up with me about progress, and returned my phone calls prior to and during the project. There should be someone in charge that is going to communicate with the client and advocate for the homeowner.
Steve our installer was great
They could improve on the communication with the customer. My overall impression, it was a good experience. I would recommend them.
Yes, I would recommend Interlock Roofing (see detailed remarks below) My roof is the envy of the street. Scheduling and notice, see my remarks above.
Definitely a roofing system that sells itself! When neighbours & friends take notice, I'm quite happy to share my Interlock roofing story, along with the names of the people involved; It's a story with a happy ending:)

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Toronto
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Toronto, Ontario. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Toronto.
Does metal roofing handle Toronto's snow load and ice dams?
Yes — aluminum's lightweight design and four-way interlocking panels shed snow and ice effectively without the structural strain that slate or concrete tile creates. Toronto receives about 100 cm of snow annually, and the smooth, non-porous surface of Interlock panels prevents ice dam formation better than asphalt, which traps moisture during the city's roughly 90 freeze-thaw days per year. The panels' low profile and superior drainage mean water runs off cleanly before refreezing.
Will freeze-thaw cycles damage an aluminum metal roof in Ontario winters?
No. Aluminum's oxide layer self-heals after scratches and does not absorb moisture, making it immune to freeze-thaw cracking that destroys asphalt, wood, and porous materials. Toronto experiences roughly 90 freeze-thaw cycles annually with mean temperatures around 9.3°C, yet the 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) remains stable because water cannot penetrate or expand within the material. The Alunar® 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish, warranted 30 years, adds an extra barrier against thermal stress.
Why doesn't aluminum rust like steel roofing, and does that matter in Toronto?
Steel rusts because it contains iron, which oxidizes when exposed to moisture. Aluminum contains no iron — it forms a transparent oxide layer that actually protects the metal beneath and self-heals when scratched. In Toronto's climate with 748 mm of annual rainfall and occasional salt-air influence, this non-rusting property is critical. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum coated on both sides with Alunar® PVDF fluorocarbon finish, making rust physically impossible and corrosion negligible even in harsh conditions.
Can a metal roof withstand Toronto's wind gusts?
Yes. Toronto experiences gusts up to 111 km/h, and Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed per specification. The interlocking design distributes lateral force across the entire roof system rather than stressing individual fasteners. This performance is verified through ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 and real-world installations from coastal salt-air locations to Antarctic research stations.
Is a metal roof light enough to install over my existing asphalt roof without reinforcement?
Often yes. The Interlock Slate installs at 0.41 lb/sq ft and the Mediterranean Tile at just 0.59 lb/sq ft — roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Most Toronto homes need no structural reinforcement. Because aluminum weighs so little compared to traditional tile or slate, you avoid expensive framing upgrades. The lightweight design also means faster installation and reduced labor cost, making it practical to install directly over existing asphalt without tear-off.
What hail rating does metal roofing have, and could it lower insurance premiums?
Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4, the highest impact rating available, and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This superior impact resistance often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts because the roof's durability reduces claim risk. Many insurers recognize Class 4 metal roofing as equivalent to or superior to conventional roofing, and some offer rate reductions. Contact your insurer with the UL 2218 Class 4 specification and the Guardian Warranty details to explore savings.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles over 50 years?
Yes. Asphalt typically requires replacement every 15–25 years, meaning two or three replacements in 50 years — each involving labor, tear-off, and landfill fees. Interlock carries a lifetime limited material warranty for the original owner and transfers 50 years to the next owner, lasting far longer than asphalt's lifespan. Current financing includes interest-free payments for 3 months with a minimum $2499 savings. When you factor in zero rust repairs, minimal maintenance, no re-roofing cycles, and potential insurance discounts, aluminum becomes the cheaper total-cost choice.
How long does installation take, and can it be done over my existing roof?
Installation timeline depends on roof size and complexity, but the lightweight design and interlocking panel system accelerate the process compared to slate or tile. Because Interlock panels weigh 0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft, installation over existing asphalt is feasible on most Toronto homes without structural reinforcement or time-consuming tear-off. Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. has served the region since 1998 and can assess your specific roof during a site evaluation to confirm timeline and confirm whether a direct overlay suits your home.
How much maintenance does a metal roof actually need?
Minimal. Unlike asphalt shingles that deteriorate, wood shakes that split and rot, or clay tile that cracks, aluminum does not degrade from weathering. Toronto's 748 mm annual rainfall and roughly 3047 sunshine hours will not damage sealed aluminum panels. Routine maintenance amounts to occasional gutter cleaning and inspection — no sealant reapplication, no shingle replacement, and no fungal growth. The CALGreen-verified Interlock system specifically qualifies as reduced-maintenance roofing, saving years of labor cost over the roof's life.
Does a metal roof help lower cooling costs in summer?
Yes. Interlock's energy-efficient colors feature thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny profile), reflecting heat that darker asphalt absorbs. In Toronto's climate with about 3047 annual sunshine hours, a reflective metal roof reduces attic temperature and air-conditioning load during warm months. Cool Roof Rating Council certification confirms this performance. Over decades of Ontario summers, the reduced cooling demand recovers part of your investment while decreasing your carbon footprint.
