Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Hartford, Maine
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Our house experiences high wind and exposure to the elements on the Maine coast. Interlock offered competitive pricing on aluminum shingle roofing. The entire experience was good, from quotation, removal of the old roof, and installation of the new roof.
We really like our roof.
Interlock was great, and installation was just as told to us by sales. The crew worked hard, cleaned area each day and roof looks great! I was impressed by their professionalism and also had a call from home office checking during the install and had a visit from a home office inspector checking progress and quality of install.
The roof looks great Jonathan did a great job of explaining the features of the new roof.the crew was great and very professional and did a great clean up after the installation
Our entire experience; inquiry, ordering, installation, and follow up has been excellent. The roof was justifiably costly and definitely worth the investment. The appearance of our house has been greatly enhanced.
Nazar was awesome to fix roof from winter ice damage. !!
Bought this roofing 20 years ago. It was installed well. Needed improvements to my roof structure were suggested and made to ensure the longevity and worthiness of my roof. All these years later I am still happy I made the investment in my 160 year old home.

Interlock was very professional. They installed my roof in a timely manner and the workmanship was great. Glad I went with interlock. Positive: Responsiveness, Punctuality, Quality, Professionalism, Value Services: Roof damage repair, Roof installation
Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value To Potential Interlock Customer: We intentionally waited almost two years to write a review (roof replaced in August 2019). Replacing a roof (whether asphalt or Interlock) is an expensive project, and we felt it was important to have the perspective of someone who has experience with the Interlock roof for 2 years. Our house is an old colonial built in about 1890. It is almost 3200 square feet with an attic that could be converted to a third floor. We also have an L-shaped wrap-around porch at the front of the house. I am very familiar with the effort it takes to replace a roof, as I have helped re-roof five different houses, including my own. I did this with the help of several friends, putting a layer of asphalt shingles on my house about 20 years ago. However, after 20 years, I had shingles beginning to fail and lost a couple during wind storms. I had a couple of asphalt shingle contractors look at the house for an estimate. One never provided a quote. The second refused the work because my house is 34 feet at the peak, and he felt it was too tall for him to work on. Michael Baldarassi came to our house in June 2019. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable about the construction of old houses and correctly identified that the gable ends would need repair as it was common to not fully extend roof boards to the gable end. He explained the product extremely well, and we were happy to choose the black, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">slate-looking tiles for our roof. The work team started in the second week of August on a bright sunny, " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">hot week. My roof needed to be stripped to the boards, and I was amazed at how quickly they dealt with the very hot asphalt shingles. It is an extremely hard-working team, and it was to the point that I wanted to tell them to take breaks. Sheets of plywood were carried up to the roof, gable ends were repaired, and several spots needed repair prior to installing the Interlock shingles. They did an excellent installation, along with cleanup and the weather-supported completion in 5 days. We immediately started receiving compliments from townspeople who thought we were having a slate roof put on. The roof definitely adds appeal to our house. Our experience with the Interlock roof has been outstanding. I no longer worry during the strong winds of winter. Having the snow slide off the roof has been a big benefit. Our first snowstorm in December 2019 was 20 inches. It was predicted to be followed by rain four days later. For the past 20 years, I have had to go out onto the wrap-around porch roof to shovel it off so that the 20 inches of snow with rain on it wouldn’t overload the porch. Not with Interlock. The snow had slid off during the snowstorm and before the rain, so no more shovelling the roof. I love not having to stand on a snowy roof shovelling anymore. Having the snow slide off has other benefits. It removed tons of weight from the snow on the roof. That snow weight does nothing good for a house. I used to have minor changes in door fitting, etc., during the winter, but that has stopped because the snow weight on the roof is gone. Additionally, no snow on the roof means no icicles. As one side of my house faces the sun all day, there are winters where if it is 10F and sunny for several days, massive icicles form that weigh hundreds of pounds. These become dangerous when they unexpectedly drop. Icicles do not happen when there is no snow on the roof. Our Interlock roof has been a fantastic choice, and it has added to the value of our house. One day when we sell our house, I have no doubt that our Interlock roof will help to attract a buyer, and the price of the roof will likely be recouped in part or all. What is a big question a potential homebuyer has? - how old is the roof? Being able to answer with a 50-year " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">warranty that can be transferred to one buyer will bring a lot of weight to the sale. The warranty gives us peace of mind that the roof will never worry us again. Thank you again, Interlock. Service: Roof installation
All of the above...we had a positive experience and live the look of our roof.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Hartford
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Hartford, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Hartford.
Does metal roofing handle Hartford's snow load and ice dams?
Yes—the four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow and ice effectively without the ice-dam buildup that plagues asphalt shingles in freeze-thaw climates. Hartford sees about 191 cm of snow annually and roughly 91 freeze-thaw days per year, which causes asphalt to fail faster. The smooth aluminum surface and tight seams prevent water from pooling under ice. Snow guards are available if you want additional retention for aesthetic reasons. The material itself won't degrade from thermal cycling the way composite shingles do.
Why won't an aluminum roof rust in Maine's wet climate?
Aluminum contains no iron, so rust is chemically impossible. What forms instead is an oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath—and if that layer is scratched, it self-heals. This matters in Hartford where you're getting 928 mm of rain per year. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating is applied to both sides of every panel and carries a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading. Steel roofing can rust; aluminum simply cannot, even after decades of exposure to wet New England weather.
How does an aluminum metal roof hold up to Maine's freeze-thaw cycles?
Aluminum's low density means it expands and contracts uniformly with temperature swings, without the material degradation that affects asphalt and wood. Hartford averages 91 freeze-thaw days annually—the back-and-forth that cracks shingles and splits wood shakes. The four-way interlocking panels move as a single system rather than as individual fastened pieces, distributing thermal stress evenly across the roof. After 25+ years of installation across North America's freeze-thaw zones, this design has proven resilient. The material warranty covers cracking and splitting—defects that don't occur with quality aluminum installation.
Will a metal roof stay put in Hartford's wind and storms?
The roof is warranted to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, and Hartford's typical gusts reach about 112 km/h (70 mph), with occasional stronger events. The four-way interlocking panels lock together mechanically—not nailed individually—so wind pressure is distributed across the entire field rather than concentrated on fasteners. This design resists wind uplift and flutter that cause shingle blow-off. The UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating also means the panels handle wind-driven debris without membrane puncture. Over 25+ years, wind-related failures are rare compared to asphalt in the same climate.
Does metal roofing get damaged by hail, and can it lower insurance costs?
No—the roof carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest available, and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. The aluminum's rigidity and the four-way interlock design distribute impact force without puncture or denting that leads to leaks. Many homeowners have seen insurance premium reductions or discounts after installation because metal roofing has a proven loss history. The Guardian Warranty covers impact-related damage for the original owner's lifetime, removing your exposure to hail claims. In a region with unpredictable spring and summer storms, this translates to real financial protection.
Is metal roofing light enough to install over my existing roof?
Yes. The Mediterranean Tile profile installs at about 0.59 pounds per square foot—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so no structural reinforcement is needed. The Slate runs about 0.41 lb/sq ft, and the Shake about 0.58. Most Hartford homes can handle the upgrade without framing work. Because the panels are so light, installation over an existing asphalt roof is feasible in most cases, cutting labor time and landfill impact. Your builder or inspector can confirm your home's load rating, but the lightweight aluminum design was specifically engineered to eliminate costly structural upgrades that traditional tile requires.
How much maintenance does a metal roof really need?
Almost none. Unlike asphalt shingles that degrade under Hartford's 2993 annual sunshine hours and frequent freeze-thaw, or wood shakes that rot and split, aluminum requires no sealing, no patching, and no tear-offs. The Alunar coating resists fading and chalking for 30 years. Leaves and debris can be cleared the same way as any roof, but the tight seams mean no water gets trapped underneath. The roof won't curl, crack, or lose granules the way asphalt does. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance burden. Over a 50-year lifespan, the time and cost difference versus asphalt is significant—this is the last roof you buy, not one you'll replace.
Is a metal roof worth the cost compared to asphalt shingles?
Metal roofing costs more upfront than asphalt—typically 2 to 3 times higher—but the lifecycle math shifts when you factor in asphalt's 15- to 20-year lifespan versus aluminum's 50+ years. You'll replace asphalt 2 or 3 times in the time one metal roof lasts. Add removal and landfill fees for each asphalt replacement, plus weather-related repairs in a freeze-thaw climate like Hartford's, and the total cost of ownership favors metal decisively. The Guardian Warranty offers a lifetime limited guarantee on materials for the original owner, transferable for 50 years to the next—value that asphalt cannot match. Current financing offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, making the entry cost lower today.
Is metal roofing actually more environmentally friendly?
Yes. Aluminum is about 95% recyclable and moves directly to recycling plants at end of life instead of landfills. Asphalt shingles, which Hartford homeowners typically replace every 15 to 20 years, have no second life—they're tear-offs that fill landfills. A single metal roof installation eliminates the need for multiple asphalt tear-offs over 50+ years. The lightweight aluminum design also means less fuel burned during transportation and installation. energy-efficient colors with thermal emissivity of 0.84 reduce cooling load and reflect heat that asphalt absorbs, lowering your summer energy use during Hartford's 2993 sunshine hours annually. The choice between a permanent, recyclable system and a consumable product that gets replaced repeatedly is clear.
