    Metal Shingles Southington, CT Review 🇺🇸 — October 13, 2016 | Interlock®

    Review: October 13, 2016 Completion: September 9, 2016

I was not able to communicate with the installation crew. Also, I would have liked some extra materials for future problems. The biggest issue with Interlock Roofing is communication. I had to get a friend of mine who speaks Spanish to come over and communicate with the crew. My father was in the construction business forever. Some of the quality of work isn't the greatest. I would rate some of the work as a 2 on a scale of 0 to 4.

    Metal Shingles Southington, CT Review 🇺🇸 — July 23, 2015 | Interlock®

    Review: July 23, 2015 Completion: June 19, 2015

Oh yeah, I would. Somebody called me in February or March about the roof. Right now, I'm happy because the roof looks great and is very pretty. However, the real test will be in the winter with the ice dams. That's why we went with Interlock Roofing.

Southington metal roofing FAQ

Will a metal roof handle Connecticut's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum's crystalline structure actually improves in freeze-thaw conditions because it has no iron to corrode and no wood fiber to split. Southington experiences about 72 freeze-thaw cycles annually, with rainfall around 1,232 mm and 65 cm of snow. The Alunar coating (PVDF fluorocarbon, 30-year warranty) protects the aluminum oxide layer, which self-heals when scratched. This means winter expansion and contraction won't degrade the material the way asphalt, wood shakes, or concrete tile do—materials that crack, curl, or spall under repeated freezing.

Does Interlock handle heavy snow loads and ice dams?

Interlock panels are engineered for snow retention and ice management without leaking. With Southington averaging about 65 cm of snow annually and peak wind gusts reaching 126 km/h, the four-way interlocking seams—rated ESR-1790 under IBC/IRC code—prevent water infiltration even when snow melts and refreezes. The panels' light weight (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft, Shake at 0.58) means snow accumulation doesn't strain your home's frame. Optional snow guards available. The solid deck and underlayment system keeps interior temperatures stable, reducing the conditions that cause ice dams in the first place.

How does metal roofing handle Southington's rainfall without leaks?

Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels create a barrier rated under ESR-1790 for heavy rainfall protection; Southington receives approximately 1,232 mm annually, and the overlapping seams—combined with a solid deck and underlayment—channel water downward without pooling or backflow. Unlike asphalt, which can develop gaps as granules wash away, or wood shakes, which absorb water and swell, aluminum is non-porous and its oxide layer is impermeable. The metal-to-metal interlocks prevent lateral water migration even on low-pitch roofs, a critical advantage in regions with sustained rain and melting snow.

Why won't an aluminum roof rust like steel roofing?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the element that oxidizes to form rust. Instead, aluminum develops a thin oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, so you won't see the corrosion patterns common to steel roofing after Southington's 1,232 mm of annual rainfall and 65 cm of snow. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating, applied to both sides of every panel, adds 30-year protection against salt-spray environments (tested to ASTM D4214 / D2244). This dual-layer defense means homeowners skip the costly inspections and repairs that steel roofs require—there's simply no chemical pathway to rust formation.

Can hail damage an Interlock metal roof, and will my insurance notice?

Interlock holds the highest impact rating available: UL 2218 Class 4, which means it withstands hailstones up to 1.5 inches without perforation—a real advantage in a climate where severe weather is possible. The Guardian warranty covers hail perforation explicitly. Because the roof resists damage that would fracture asphalt or dent standing-seam steel, your insurer may recognize the durability; many offer discounts for Class 4-rated roofs. Over a 50-year lifespan, the reduction in claim frequency and replacement cycles often pays the premium difference within the first decade, making impact resistance both a safety feature and a financial one.

Will Interlock stay attached during Southington's wind gusts?

Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), well above Southington's typical peak gusts of 126 km/h and mean daily-max winds of 19 km/h. The four-way interlocking seams—rated ESR-1790 under building code—distribute load across the entire panel network rather than relying on fasteners alone, so the roof becomes a unified membrane. This engineering prevents the billowing and uplift that compromise asphalt shingles and allows standing-seam systems to flutter. When installed to specification, Interlock's geometry and fastener schedule create structural redundancy: even if one fastener loosens, the neighboring panels remain locked in place.

Do reflective metal roofs actually lower cooling costs in New England?

Yes. Interlock's energy-efficient colors achieve thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), meaning they reflect heat that asphalt absorbs and stores. In Southington, which averages about 3,134 sunshine hours annually, this reflectance reduces attic temperature rise, cutting air-conditioning load in summer and reducing the temperature differential that drives heat loss in late spring and early fall. Cool Roof Rating Council testing confirms the benefit. Over a roof's 50-year lifespan, the cumulative energy savings—especially combined with the roof's insulation value—offset the material cost relative to asphalt, which absorbs solar radiation and radiates it into living space.

Do I need to reinforce my home's structure for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's Slate profile weighs just 0.41 lb/sq ft, and even the Mediterranean Tile—replicating heavy clay tile—weighs only 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it about 96% lighter than authentic tile. Most existing framing supports metal roofing without modification, and Interlock can install directly over your current asphalt roof, eliminating the teardown and disposal cost. This lightweight advantage becomes clear when you consider that a conventional clay tile roof weighs 15–20 times more, requiring costly structural upgrades. For Southington homes, especially those with aging frames, metal roofing avoids the engineering expense and construction disruption that traditional tile demands.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood?

Interlock requires minimal maintenance—occasional gutter cleaning and a visual inspection every few years. Asphalt shingles need granule-loss monitoring and often fail by year 15–20 in New England's 72 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 65 cm of snow. Wood shakes absorb moisture, split, and rot, especially after Southington's 1,232 mm of rainfall, demanding frequent replacement. Concrete and clay tiles crack under freeze-thaw stress. Aluminum won't rot, split, curl, or lose impact resistance—the Guardian warranty covers those failures explicitly. CALGreen verification confirms Interlock qualifies for reduced-maintenance roofing status, meaning your long-term costs (labor, materials, inspections) are a fraction of traditional materials' lifetime expense.
