Tillamook, OR Metal Shingle Roof Review (Installed 2017) — Delayed, Repaired Before Siding
Review: October 15, 2017 Completion: August 25, 2017Timing of jobs. Ours was delayed but it did get completed and repaired before siding company, also delayed, began. We live at the beach and the installer was unaware if the wind direction so the ridge cap and vents had to be reversed. Installer missed an end piece of wood rotted and needed to be replaced. All repaired now. The roof looks great though we are away for 7 months so cannot comment on the performance until we return in May.

Tillamook metal roofing FAQ
How does a metal roof handle Tillamook's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?
Metal roofs shed snow and ice better than asphalt because their smooth, interlocking aluminum panels resist ice damming, and the material's light weight—about 0.41 lb/sq ft for the Shingle profile—means no added structural burden. With Tillamook averaging 47 cm of snow annually and roughly 16 freeze-thaw days per year, the Interlock® panels' four-way interlock design keeps water out during those critical thaw-and-refreeze cycles. Unlike wood shingles, aluminum won't crack, split, or rot from repeated moisture exposure; unlike asphalt, it stays pliable in cold and doesn't become brittle. The result is a roof that performs through seasons without the deterioration other materials suffer.
Does Interlock Metal Roofing handle Tillamook's 2000+ mm annual rainfall without leaks?
Yes—the four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered to channel water downward and outward, shedding the area's 2066 mm of annual rainfall without penetration. Each panel locks to its neighbors on all four edges, eliminating the gaps where water typically finds its way into asphalt-shingled roofs. The profiles—Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, and Mediterranean Tile—all use the same robust interlock system. When installed over a solid deck with underlayment to spec, the system performs identically to asphalt in heavy rain, but without the granule loss or deterioration that turns asphalt into a leak risk after 15-20 years. Tillamook's wet climate is where this design proves itself.
Will a metal roof stay on during Tillamook County's windstorms?
The Interlock® panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, which covers Tillamook's typical gusts of up to 136 km/h (about 84 mph) with substantial safety margin. The four-way interlocking system prevents wind from lifting or separating panels the way it does with shingled roofs. Each panel's geometry and fastening pattern distributes wind load across the entire roof plane rather than concentrating force at individual attachment points. In the coastal Pacific Northwest, where sustained winds and gusts are normal, homeowners with metal roofs report zero wind damage while nearby asphalt roofs lose shingles. The warranty backs this performance—it's not marketing.
Why does an aluminum metal roof beat steel in Tillamook's damp, salty air?
Aluminum itself cannot rust because it contains no iron; instead, it forms an invisible oxide layer that self-heals when scratched. Interlock panels use roofing-grade 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum alloy per ASTM B209, which is why installations span from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station. The Alunar® 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is applied to both sides of each panel and warranted 30 years against chalking and fading—that two-sided coating is extra insurance in Tillamook's salt-spray environment. Steel roofing, by contrast, rusts from the inside out once the coating fails. Over 25 years, a homeowner with a steel roof faces rust perforation and replacement; an Interlock owner's only concern is the coating's longevity, which is guaranteed.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles over 30 years?
Yes. Asphalt roofs cost less initially but require replacement every 15-20 years; a Tillamook homeowner typically buys three asphalt roofs in the time one Interlock roof lasts. Multiply labor, waste removal, and material for three installations against one metal roof installation, and the metal roof becomes the cheaper option. The Guardian Warranty covers the original owner for life and transfers 50 years to the next owner—no prorations, no exclusions for normal wear. Add the current regional promotion (no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation), and the economics shift further. A metal roof is the last roof you buy; asphalt is a recurring expense. For a Tillamook homeowner planning to stay put, that's a powerful financial case.
What warranty covers an Interlock metal roof in Oregon?
The Guardian is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—it covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance without diminishing coverage over time. The warranty transfers once, giving a subsequent owner 50 additional years of coverage from the roof's completion date. The Alunar® coating itself is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading per ASTM D4214 and D2244. For hail, the UL 2218 Class 4 rating even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. In Oregon, where transferability matters for resale and freeze-thaw cycles test roofing durability, this warranty structure is unusually robust. It reflects the fact that Interlock has manufactured its panels since 1998 and installed them across climates far harsher than Tillamook.
Does a metal roof reduce insurance costs after hail damage?
Metal roofs often qualify for insurance discounts because of their proven durability. Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest classification available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Ask your insurance agent: many carriers reduce premiums for Class 4-rated roofs. In Tillamook County, where hail is less frequent than in inland regions but freeze-thaw stress (about 16 days per year) tests roof integrity, the combination of impact resistance and weather durability often appeals to underwriters. Some homeowners recover part of their installation cost through lower premiums over five to ten years. The local installer, Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc., can provide documentation of the rating to pass along to your insurer.
Do Interlock's reflective coatings save energy in Tillamook's cloudy climate?
Yes, though the savings differ from sunnier regions. Interlock's energy-efficient colors feature thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), meaning they reflect heat that asphalt absorbs and re-radiates into your home. Even in Tillamook's 2884 annual sunshine hours—substantial despite the area's reputation for clouds—a reflective roof reduces cooling load during warm months. The Cool Roof Rating Council rating confirms this performance. The real benefit is consistency: you avoid the summer heat gain of an asphalt roof, which darkens with age and absorbs more solar energy than it did when new. A reflective aluminum roof maintains its performance decade after decade. In winter, when Tillamook averages about 47 cm of snow, the insulating effect of the roof deck itself matters more than reflectance, but you still benefit from cleaner snow melt without the black-roof runoff.
How much maintenance does a metal roof require in Tillamook's wet climate?
Virtually none compared to asphalt, wood, or tile. Metal doesn't split, curl, crack, or rot; it won't grow moss or algae in ways that compromise the roof. Gutters need cleaning because Tillamook receives 2066 mm of rain yearly and surrounding trees drop debris, but the roof itself requires no re-sealing, no replacement of individual pieces, and no seasonal treatments. Wood shakes demand regular staining and rot inspection; asphalt shingles lose granules and fail at edges; concrete and clay tiles crack and break. Aluminum stays dimensionally stable through Tillamook's 16 annual freeze-thaw cycles and never needs maintenance to prevent functional failure. The CALGreen verification for reduced maintenance is based on this reality. Over 40 years, a metal roof's maintenance cost is essentially the price of keeping gutters clear—the same task any roof demands.
Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Tillamook, Oregon?
Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc. serves the Tillamook region and has since 1997, bringing nearly three decades of PNW installation experience to your project. They understand local conditions—the 136 km/h wind gusts, the 2066 mm annual rainfall, the freeze-thaw cycles—and know how Interlock's four-way interlocking panels perform in actual Tillamook weather. They can install over your existing roof if structural conditions allow, reducing tear-off waste and labor. The current regional promotion—no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation—is available through this installer. For warranty claims, product support, and future service, having a local company with 25+ years in the region means faster response and deeper familiarity with your home's specific needs than a distant contractor.
