Calgary, AB Metal Roofing Review: Interlock’s Fast, Clean Installation and Cooler Home Comfort
Calgary, AB
Roy M.
This year we decided to replace our roof. The old roof was 25 years old, wood shingles and had reached the end of its life. We reached out to several roof installation companies and after meeting with Tyler at Interlock decided to invest in a roof that would protect the house well into our retirement. We agreed on a date and the crew showed up and within 7 days the old roof was gone and the new roof was installed. The crew didn’t start too early and made every effort to leave a clean worksite before they left every day. During the construction it rained but the crew ensured that the water proofing would keep the water out – and it did. The new roof looks great. The crew added addition roof vents to improve house circulation and the house is cooler. Thanks for the great work!

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Calgary
Homeowners researching metal roofing in Calgary often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value.
Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Calgary may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.
How long will a metal roof last in Calgary, AB?
Metal roofs in Calgary commonly last 40–70+ years, while asphalt roofs typically have shorter lifespans. Calgary is prone to severe hailstorms and high winds that can dent or damage roofing materials, making impact resistance important for longevity. Frequent freeze–thaw cycles and significant winter snow loads also accelerate wear by stressing flashings, sealants and shingle adhesives, so materials that resist cracking and thermal movement perform better in this climate. Homeowners often choose metal for durability, hail resistance, low maintenance and longer service life. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use heavy-gauge aluminium and include a lifetime limited 50-year transferable warranty designed for long‑term protection.
How much does it cost to install a metal roof in Calgary, AB?
In Calgary, AB, a metal roof generally costs more upfront than asphalt shingles, but total price varies widely with roof size, pitch, complexity (dormers, valleys), tear-off requirements, flashing, skylights and local labour rates. Calgary construction factors — permits, winter scheduling, access and contractor availability — also affect quotes. Many homeowners compare options by lifetime value, not just initial price: durable metal systems resist weather, reduce repair frequency and often delay full replacement, lowering long‑term ownership costs. While upfront investment is higher, the extended service life and diminished maintenance can make metal cost‑effective over decades. Interlock Metal Roofing emphasises long‑term ownership value and system performance rather than competing as a low‑cost roofing option.
Should I choose metal roofing or asphalt shingles for my Calgary home?
Metal vs asphalt in Calgary depends on priorities. Metal roofs typically last 40–70 years versus 15–25 years for asphalt shingles; metal’s lifespan often offsets higher upfront cost. Maintenance: metal needs less routine upkeep (occasional seal checks), while shingles require more frequent inspections and repairs after storms. Durability: metal resists snow-shedding, freeze–thaw cycles and UV degradation better; asphalt can lose granules, curl, or be punctured by large hail—Calgary sees frequent hail and high winds, which stress roofing materials. Long-term value: metal usually gives lower lifecycle cost and better resale appeal, though asphalt is cheaper initially. Homeowners who prioritise durability and long-term protection often choose metal; others on a tighter budget may prefer shingles. Interlock Metal Roofing appeals because its interlocking panels improve wind and snow performance, reduce maintenance, and deliver lasting architectural curb appeal.
Are metal roofs noisy when it rains in Calgary?
It’s a common myth that metal roofs are noisy during rain in Calgary. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking don’t sound like barn roofs; the decking creates a stable, less‑resonant surface. Insulation, attic space, underlayment and the overall roof assembly all reduce noise transmission, and installation quality—fastening, sealing and airflow control—makes a measurable difference. Properly designed and installed residential metal roofs are typically similar in sound to asphalt shingle or tile roofs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are supplied and installed as complete roofing systems specifically designed for residential homes, with components chosen to control weather, sound and comfort.
How energy-efficient are metal roofs in Calgary?
In Calgary a metal roof can be an energy-efficient choice because metal roofing can reflect sunlight, lowering summer cooling loads. However, overall performance depends on roof assembly, insulation, and ventilation — proper insulation and ventilation are essential to control heat loss in winter and prevent condensation or ice dams. Climate conditions affect potential benefits: Calgary’s cold winters and high sun exposure mean reflective finishes help in summer, while winter savings depend mostly on insulation quality. Homeowners researching roof replacement often consider energy efficiency to reduce utility bills, improve year‑round comfort, extend roof lifespan, and increase resale value or qualify for incentives. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long-term home performance.
How does metal roofing in Calgary, AB withstand wind, hail, and severe weather?
Calgary experiences frequent severe thunderstorms, hail and strong Chinook and convective winds that regularly stress roofs and cladding systems. Recent Calgary hailstorms have caused multi‑million dollar insured losses, underlining local exposure to large hail events.
Metal roofing can perform very well in wind, hail and heavy storms when engineered and installed correctly: it resists wind uplift, sheds water and snow, and many profiles withstand hail impacts better than aged asphalt shingles. Actual performance depends on:
• roofing system design (profile, fastening, underlayment)
• installation quality (fastening pattern, flashing, workmanship)
• material durability (gauge, coating, impact rating)
Homeowners prioritise weather resilience to reduce damage, maintenance and insurance claims. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection, and wind resistance.
Will a metal roof rust or corrode in Calgary's wet climate?
Corrosion and rust resistance in metal roofing depends on the metal chosen. Steel, copper and aluminium behave differently: galvanized or coated steel resists rust but may corrode over time; copper is naturally corrosion‑resistant; aluminium resists corrosion and won’t rust, making it excellent in wet or coastal environments. Homeowners in Calgary, AB should consider corrosion resistance because it affects longevity, maintenance costs, warranties and appearance—poor resistance leads to leaks, staining and earlier replacement. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminium construction designed for strong corrosion resistance. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra protection, improving durability and reducing maintenance needs. Ask your installer for specific material specs and warranties for Calgary, AB’s climate.
How often should I inspect and maintain my metal roof in Calgary?
Metal roofing is generally low maintenance, durable and well suited to Calgary’s climate. No roof is completely maintenance‑free: homeowners should inspect roofs periodically—after major storms and seasonally in spring and fall. Check for debris (branches, leaves, grit), keep gutters and downspouts clear, and inspect flashing, sealants and roof penetrations such as vents, chimneys and skylights. Look for loose fasteners, damaged panels or corrosion. Weather events and seasonal debris—snow and ice, freeze–thaw cycles, hail and high winds—can affect performance and accelerate wear if left unaddressed. With routine inspections and prompt minor repairs, metal roofs provide a long‑lasting, low‑maintenance option for Calgary homes.
How does curb appeal affect my home's resale value in Calgary?
Yes — in Calgary, metal roofing can increase home value. Buyers often value durable, low‑maintenance roofs that reduce future repair costs. Premium roofing materials enhance curb appeal, attracting buyers willing to pay more, and a long lifespan improves buyer confidence in the property. Architectural style matters in neighbourhoods; a metal roof’s profile should suit the home and streetscape. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles — slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake and standing seam — available in heavy gauge aluminium and solid copper. Warranties, colour and finish, plus professional installation, further influence buyer perception and resale value, and local comparables determine the likely uplift in Calgary’s market.
Can I install solar panels on my Interlock Metal Roofing System in Calgary?
Yes — Interlock Metal Roofing Systems in Calgary are solar-compatible when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. Calgary roofs commonly face heavy hail and pronounced freeze–thaw cycles (Chinook-driven rapid melts), so roof durability matters when adding panels. Homeowners should consider future solar when replacing a roof because panels add weight and attachment points; matching panel life to a long-lasting roof avoids removing panels for reroofing. Interlock systems are designed to support solar mounting solutions and long-lived metal roofing is often preferred for rooftop solar.
Metal roofing offers numerous advantages over traditional roofing materials, making it an ideal choice for homeowners. Its durability ensures that roofs can withstand harsh weather conditions, including heavy rain, snow, and high winds, significantly reducing the need for frequent repairs or replacements.
In addition to durability, metal roofing is energy-efficient and can help lower cooling costs during hot summers. Its reflective properties keep homes cooler, while its longevity means fewer materials end up in landfills, making it an eco-friendly option. Many homeowners also appreciate the aesthetic appeal of metal roofs, which come in various styles and colors to match any home design.
