Four factors need to be considered

5/5

We had replaced one roof in the time we had owned our home, and now it was time for the second replacement. I began to wonder if there were any alternatives to old asphalt technology. Also, we had two concerns about asphalt, the first is that it is not clean from an environmental standpoint and second, asphalt is oil based which means its cost is linked with the price of oil. I noticed that many commercial buildings had metal roofs. My wife and I usually do a lot of deep research for major home projects. We began looking into the possibility of replacing the current roof with metal. Our research indicated that there were residential metal roofs available in various metals and styles. Four factors need to be considered.

  1. Type of metal. We chose aluminum over steel. It’s lighter and less susceptible to corrosion although corrosion is not a major factor due to the various coatings and treatments applied to both metals during the manufacturing process.
  2. Structural assembly. We liked the Interlock method of attaching the panels to each other and the roof base. When complete the system is structurally sound and waterproof.
  3. Installation process. Installing a metal roof requires experience. Installation is different from that of an asphalt roof. During our research, we had a hard time locating installers that had experience installing residential metal roofs. This was another reason that we chose Interlock. They are associated with installation crews who have the knowledge and experience required for working with the Interlock product.
  4. The only other factor to consider is the style and color, and there are many to choose from.

Installation was uneventful, the crew was courteous and they explained exactly what they were doing and answered any questions that we had. The roof looks beautiful and we have had many compliments on it since it was installed two weeks ago. We are very happy that we chose Interlock for this project and highly recommend them.

Top 10 Roofing FAQs for Boston, MA Homeowners

What is the best type of roof for Boston’s climate?

Boston sees hot, humid summers, freezing, snowy winters, and coastal wind and salt air. That means your roof needs to be corrosion-resistant, insulated, and able to withstand wind and ice loads. Interlock Metal Roofing, made from high-grade aluminum, is engineered for this climate. Unlike steel, it won’t rust. Unlike asphalt, it won’t crack or curl. And it sheds snow naturally—reducing the risk of ice dams.

Asphalt shingles are common in Boston, but they often need to be replaced every 12–20 years due to New England’s weather. They can deteriorate from snow, sun, and algae growth. Interlock aluminum shingles last 50+ years, come with a Lifetime Limited Warranty, and won’t absorb moisture, crack, or fade like asphalt.

Yes. While steel is strong, it’s prone to rust, especially in coastal neighborhoods like South Boston, Dorchester, and Winthrop. Aluminum doesn’t rust—ever. Interlock uses a marine-grade aluminum alloy with a protective Alunar finish that stands up to salty air and acidic rain.

Composite slate is lighter and more affordable than natural slate but may fade or become brittle over time. Interlock Slate Shingles offer the look of real slate with superior weather resistance, and the aluminum core resists cracking and UV damage. It also weighs significantly less, making it a better fit for older Boston homes.

Absolutely. Interlock offers classic profiles like Slate, Shake, and Tile in colors that complement historic architecture in neighborhoods like Beacon Hill, Back Bay, and Cambridge. And because it’s low-profile and elegant, it preserves curb appeal while dramatically increasing performance.

Rubber roofing (EPDM or TPO) is typically used on flat or low-slope roofs—like those on multi-family row homes or small additions. It’s not ideal for pitched residential roofs. While affordable, rubber can shrink, crack, and attract debris over time. Interlock’s pitched roofing systems are better for homes needing aesthetic value + longevity.

Yes. Interlock roofs are coated with heat-reflective Alunar Coating System that help reduce heat absorption—keeping your home cooler in summer. This is especially useful for triple-deckers and brownstones with full-sun exposure on the roof. Helps lower attic temps = lower AC bills.

With its 4-way interlocking design, snow and ice stay out. The smooth metal surface also sheds snow naturally, preventing heavy buildup and reducing the chance of ice dams. No need for dangerous rooftop snow removal every winter.

Yes. Boston’s nor’easters bring wind gusts that can rip up shingles and flashings. Interlock systems are rated for high-wind performance, thanks to their interlocking panels and secure fastening system. Your roof stays in place—even when the weather doesn’t.

Absolutely. While the upfront cost is higher than asphalt, Interlock’s lifetime warranty, low-maintenance, and lasting curb appeal make it a smarter choice for Boston homeowners who don’t want to re-roof every 10–15 years. You get peace of mind—and one less project to think about.

If you live in Boston, you need a roof that handles snow, salt, heat, and wind without falling apart. Interlock Aluminum Roofing checks every box: it’s rust-proof, energy-efficient, wind-rated, and architecturally beautiful. It’s a roof you install once—and never think about again.

It is quiet and looks great!

We had an Interlock roof installed 18 months ago and love it.

It is quiet, looks great, easy to remove snow (low pitch) and no granules from roof on patio.

We chose Interlock to install a much needed new roof on our 200-year-old farmhouse

Warner, New Hampshire

5/5

We chose Interlock to install a much needed new roof on our 200-year-old farmhouse in Warner, New Hampshire which serves as our year-round vacation getaway. From the moment David showed up to meet with us through the final completion of the project a few weeks ago, we knew that we had made the right decision and that our project was in good hands. We never once felt pressured even though we took longer than expected to complete some preliminary repairs to a porch roof before the project could begin. When we did finally call to say that we had completed our work and were ready to go, they had a work crew on site in less than a week! More amazing is that they completed their work of stripping the old asphalt, installing a plywood deck, and re-roofing a large old house where nothing is truly square in five days and, other than the evidence of a brand new gray slate roof on our house, one would never know that anyone had even been there. The crew left our property cleaner than it was before they arrived. They even cleaned up a pile of roofing debris we had left behind following our re-roofing project. Throughout the project, David and Jennifer, in the office, were always available to answer our questions. From selecting the right roof to arranging to finance, to completing the project in a timely fashion, we could not be happier with the total interlock experience. We are highly satisfied with the result and are already looking forward to having Interlock install a new roof on our adjoining barn in the near future.

Sincerely,

The warranty can’t be beat

5/5

Interlock replaced our old shake roof, which was leaking. It was not more than 13 years old. In life you get what your pay for. I went on line and looked at the choices, and it was clear to me that that Interlock was the best choice for our home. I called them right after I did my research.

Where I come from, quality is the most important thing when you are looking to buy a new product, especially something as important as a roof. We were really unhappy with our last roof, and wanted to get it done right this time, to last for a lifetime. I can’t say anything bad about it. We love the roof, and the installation was great. The warranty can’t be beat.

Ross was a great company rep. I did not worry in the least about the price we paid, I don’t want to do the roof again. The neighbors keep asking us about the roof. I keep telling them, don’t think of anything else but Interlock. We’ll see a few more Interlock roofs in this neighborhood by the time I am done telling everyone about the company and the roof.

It just shows how professional and caring the company is

5/5

Dear Interlock Roofing,

We want to say thanks for our beautiful roof, and the peace of mind knowing that we will never have to replace our roof again. The roof looks great and we just want to show it to everyone.

The installers always kept our property very neat and clean. They worked long hours and were always very polite and professional. The supervisor came to our house to inspect their work and to see if we had any questions or concerns. It just shows how professional and caring the company is.

We could not be more pleased with the way our rooflooks and matches our house. We love the slate look and how maintenance free it will be. Can’t wait for our first snowstorm and not worrying about cleaning the snow off the roof.

The neighbors have told us how the roof looks great, and one neighbor could not believe that it was metal roofing.

We are very satisfied and would recommend your company to others.

Sincerely.

Some severe weather has shown that noise is not a problem

Portsmouth, Rhode Island

5/5

Dear Interlock:

It has been a couple of months since the installation of my Interlock roof was completed, and two neighborhood endorsements have been forthcoming in that period. First, neighbors have commented about how good it looks, and second, they have commented on the daily cleanup done by the installation crew. I heartily endorse my neighbors’ comments. The cleanup factor really became evident shortly after when a conventional shingle roof was installed a few houses away by a local contractor. Materials were staged in front of the house rather than out of sight in the rear, and the place looked like a mess until the job was completed.

As you are aware, the design of my house coupled with the prior construction of an addition across the length of the rear presented unusual challenges. While aluminum shingles could be used on the front, the slope of the back required an installation of Interlock’s membrane roof product. Further complicating the matter was a double roof in the rear with no ventilation of the void between the two roofs. Although you built a ventilation solution into the contract price, hidden construction issues once the work commenced on the rear necessitated redesigning the proposed ventilation solution. This could easily have been an opportunity for Interlock to take advantage of the situation, but the pricing of the change was handled by you and your office staff in a very fair manner. The extensive carpentry that became necessary did, I suspect, add the better part of a day to the job, yet the additional cost was nominal for the effort involved. As important as the pricing was to me, it was just as important and most gratifying to see the carpentry skills employed by the installation crew as they implemented the changes.

The one concern my wife had in going with a metal roof was noise during a rainstorm, and some severe weather has shown that noise is not a problem. Also, as everyone is aware, July broke heat records, yet my home’s interior has been more comfortable thanks to the reflectivity of the roof. In conclusion, I am very pleased with the outcome.

Our new aluminum roof looks great on our Victorian house

5/5

Dear Interlock,

It is a great feeling to know that our new Interlock roof has been completed. For 3 years we have looked at our roof and known we had to do something. We contacted Barry from yourlastroof.ca and he responded to our call immediately. We thought the products and the service he offered us were top of the line. We were not disappointed with either, our new aluminum roof looks great on our Victorian house, and the crew installing it did a terrific job. Each day after completing their work they did a thorough clean up of the job site. They were very pleasant to talk to and always explained what they were doing.

We honestly believe we made the right decision on selecting Barry and his crew to complete our roofing project. Now we have a roof that looks great and is guaranteed for our lifetime.

As the crew worked on the roof, they were fast, efficient and skilled in the operation of installing the materials

5/5

Dear Interlock,

Thank you for sending the package of brochures including Dave Brown’s letter explaining the Referral Program.

Please note that the 3-man crew began May 14th and completed the job on the 16th. The crew led by George did an excellent job. From the moment that they arrived at our home, they conducted themselves in a very professional manner! As the crew worked on the roof, they were fast, efficient and skilled in the operation of installing the materials. There was never any mess as they continuously “cleaned up”! In chatting with the fellows, they were friendly and polite. The entire process never interfered with our coming and goings but we were interested in watching from time to time! A real learning experience!! All in all, we would certainly recommend your company and roofing system as we are very, very pleased with the final result – just prefect!

Thanks again to INTERLOCK for installing a roof which is both long-lasting and beautiful.

We have already received many positive compliments!

Yours truly,

We knew that we wanted a metal roof but simply did not like the long lines that we’ve seen on commercial buildings. Interlock shingles supplied both the metal roof and the regular shingle look. The bonus is the lifetime guarantee. We can’t wait to see how it cools our home this summer.

We are already receiving a lower utility bill. Neighbors and friends are making inquiries. I’m sure you’re receiving call and questions. We are completely satisfied.

This is one investment in our house that will really pay off

5/5

Our roof was completed last month and I cannot tell you how many compliments we have already received. We feel that this is one investment in our house that will really pay off because with the Interlock roof there is no worry about how long it is going to last. The quality of this product and the professional way in which it was installed proves that this is a company that cares about its customers.

We have seen other homes in our area getting new roofs and dreaded the mess that came with this type of work. One home even had what we called “the loan roofer” doing the job. One man doing not only to tear down of the roof but the installation of the new roof. And this was in poor weather when it was vital to get that roof on quickly. But with Interlock we had at least 5 to 6 men on the job daily, working long hours. Our property was covered so that nothing got damaged during the teardown and every scrap was picked up and removed by the workers.

We highly recommend your company and are very satisfied with the professional manner of your employees. With our Interlock roof, we have the security of knowing that this product is completely guaranteed.

Stunning red hidden tile aluminum Interlock roof

5/5

I wanted to write and thank you for all your efforts in working with us to put in Interlock roof on our home. It was a big decision and all during the process, I felt like you really had our interests at heart. You never tired of answering my questions and your follow-up, whenever I needed to speak with you, was first rate.

I think we had three Interlock crews involved in our project. First came the tear-off guys, who, in our case, had to remove a cedar shake roof before any other improvements could take place. Second, came the install crew, led by “Nacho”, who is absolutely terrific to work with. Ours was a relatively complicated job, with lots of angles, overhangs, gables and pitch to deal with. Nacho made it happen. Finally, the cleanup crew. When Interlock left the job site, my expectations were exceeded. No landscaping was damaged and the debris was all cleared away.

Now, we have a stunning red hidden tile aluminum Interlock roof to look at and enjoy. Perhaps most enjoyable is knowing there will never need to be another roof put on this house. Already, after just a few weeks, we have received numerous compliments from neighbors and friends and see a lot of people slowing in their cars to get a better look.

Bob, thanks to you and all the Interlock staff again for your assistance in making this experience a positive one.

Sincerely,
