Belmont, MA Aluminum Shingles — Interlock Review: Initial Failures, Repaired

Belmont, MA

TL;DR: Belmont Review Summary

Roofing installation in Belmont, Massachusetts. The homeowner reported improper flashing and installation that led to leaks, wood rot, and significant exterior wall damage, plus long delays and coordination failures when requesting service and working with a solar installer. After Interlock followed up, customer service became responsive and a technician reinstalled flashing, reapplied chimney caulking, noted a chimney-cap issue (not in scope), and left the homeowner more confident in using Interlock for future additions.
David M.

Based on my original review below, Interlock reached out and was explicit about wanting to know what needed to be done to receive a better review. My experience with Interlock since that point has been excellent.

First, the customer service person (Jen) became very responsive. The technician (who I had positive things to say about below) continued to be knowledgeable and focused on doing the job right. The technician applied new caulking around the chimney, alerted me to issues with the chimney cap (not in scope), and completely re-installed the flashing where our original house meets a lower roof (what was the issue resulting in significant exterior, structural wall damage). The technician explained that installation methods for the Interlock product have changed over the years and what was installed originally is no longer the way flashing is installed today.

This latest set of interactions with Interlock gives me greater confidence that we would continue to use Interlock for any additions to the house needing roofing (e.g., a portico over the front door, an addition over the garage). If their current technician in the Boston area is an indication of current install quality, then you will have no issues or complaints about the product. I just feel badly for all the folks with older Interlock roofs, like me, where installation methods were unacceptable.

Original Review:

We bought a house with an Interlock roof. I really want to like Interlock. It seems like a nice product. Unfortunately, the roof installation cut proverbial corners and getting service for the roof has been extremely difficult.

For the sake of giving credit where due, their roofer that collaborated with our solar installer was competent. Sadly that is not universally the case.

When we first moved in, one of the first things I noticed was that the metal roof installation, over an existing composite roof, makes the unfortunate assumption that the flashing under the old roof is in good shape and will continue to operate. As such on one section of roof that abuts the main house, the flashing was fastened to the side of the wood siding, allowing rain running down the side of the house to go behind the flashing down to, theoretically, the original roof and flashing. Another roof that abuts the main house was installed by Interlock without flashing by shoving it up under the wood siding. This has expedited wood rot of the siding and has not prevented water leaks that completely rotted a significant portion of the exterior wall of the main house. It is crazy to me that anyone would install a roof without ensuring it is flashed properly.

Beyond that, trying to work with Interlock to collaborate with our solar installer was a very painful process. Due to Interlock not reading the solar installation plans or passing them along to their roofer, they were not prepared to help with the solar rail installation, leading the solar installer to have to eat the cost of a crew of 8 people that could not do the install as planned as the right roof flashing was not available. Thank goodness the Interlock roofer was willing to not proceed without the right flashing, but it would have been better had the right preparation been made.

There is now a leak around the chimney of the house. I have been trying to schedule service with Interlock for over a month and a half. Their “system” has been down for over two months so they cannot find records regarding the roof on my house. They have also been unable to schedule me for service, consistently passing messages along to a local affiliate of some sort that keeps telling me that they can’t schedule for service until their system comes back up.

I hope I can eventually update this post with some good news, but as of right now I have a list of reasons you should avoid this company.

Top 10 Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Belmont

Homeowners researching metal roofing in Belmont often have several important questions before replacing their roof. Many people want to understand how metal roofing compares to traditional materials like asphalt shingles in terms of lifespan, durability, cost, and long-term value. Roofing decisions can also be influenced by local weather conditions. Homes in Belmont may experience environmental factors such as rain, wind, snow, heat, fire, or seasonal storms that can impact roof performance over time. The following frequently asked questions help explain what homeowners should know when evaluating metal roofing and why many people choose durable roofing systems designed for long-term protection.

Metal roofs commonly last 50–75+ years; asphalt shingles typically last 15–30 years depending on quality. Belmont has cold, snowy winters with significant annual snowfall and warm, humid summers—conditions that drive freeze‑thaw cycles, heavy snow loads, and persistent moisture exposure that can shorten asphalt roof life and stress flashings and fasteners. Metal performs well here because it sheds snow, resists moisture and rot, and tolerates repeated freeze‑thaw and humid summers better than asphalt. Homeowners in Belmont often choose durable systems to avoid frequent reroofs, ice-dam repairs, and wind or storm damage. For long‑term protection, Interlock Metal Roofing uses heavy‑gauge aluminum and comes with a lifetime limited 50‑year transferable warranty, offering a resilient option built for Belmont’s snow, moisture, and seasonal temperature swings.
Metal roofs in Belmont generally cost more up front than asphalt shingles, but final price depends on roof size, slope, complexity, tear-off, flashing, skylights, and local labor and permitting. Durable metal systems often reduce future repair and replacement costs, so many homeowners weigh lifetime value over initial price. Local factors to consider: Belmont experiences cold, snowy winters with substantial snowfall and frequent freeze–thaw cycles—conditions that increase snow loads, ice-dam risk, and demand for robust flashing and roof ventilation. Those conditions can raise installation complexity and material choices (standing seam, thicker gauges, snow guards), affecting cost. Interlock Metal Roofing focuses on long-term ownership value—providing durable systems and proper detailing that lower lifetime costs rather than competing as the lowest‑cost option up front.
Short answer: Yes—often, for Belmont homeowners who prioritize durability and long-term protection, metal roofing is worth the higher upfront cost compared with asphalt shingles. Belmont experiences cold, snowy winters with frequent freeze–thaw cycles and regular precipitation/humidity that can accelerate shingle wear and encourage moss in shaded areas. Differences: • Lifespan: Metal typically lasts 40+ years (often 50–70); asphalt usually 15–30. • Maintenance: Metal needs less frequent repair and resists ice/damage; shingles require more inspections, sealing, and moss/algae control. • Durability: Metal better resists snow loads, freeze–thaw stress and wind; shingles are more vulnerable to granule loss and ice dam damage. • Long-term value: Higher initial cost for metal but lower lifetime maintenance/replacement costs—better value if you plan to stay long term. Interlock Metal Roofing systems appeal to homeowners seeking long-term performance and architectural curb appeal because they pair engineered durability with lifetime warranties and finished looks tailored for New England conditions.
Is a metal roof noisy when it rains in Belmont, MA? This is a common myth. Modern residential metal roofs installed over solid decking with proper underlayment and insulation do not sound like barn roofs. The perceived noise level depends on the roof assembly—insulation, attic space, underlayment, and ventilation all absorb and dampen sound. Quality of installation and fastening methods matter; poor installation can increase vibration and noise. Properly installed residential metal roofs are typically similar in sound to asphalt, tile, or composite roofs. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are installed as complete roofing systems designed for residential homes, incorporating deck attachment, underlayment, and ventilation to minimize noise.
In Belmont, MA, a metal roof can be energy efficient because reflective coatings and light-colored panels reduce solar heat gain, lowering summer cooling loads. Actual savings depend on the full roof assembly — underlayment, insulation levels, and attic ventilation — which together control heat transfer and moisture management. Belmont’s seasonal swings mean reflective benefits are useful in summer, while insulation and airtight details matter more in winter. Homeowners researching a roof replacement often weigh energy efficiency to reduce utility bills, improve year‑round comfort, extend roof and HVAC life, and increase resale value (and to qualify for local incentives). Proper color selection and professional installation further improve outcomes. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are designed to support long-term home performance.
Belmont, MA roofs face nor’easters, heavy snow, strong seasonal and coastal wind gusts, and occasional hail and thunderstorms—weather that commonly stresses roof coverings and flashings. Metal roofing can perform very well: interlocking or mechanically-seamed panels resist wind uplift, standing seams shed snow and water, and thicker gauges or impact-rated finishes reduce hail damage. Performance depends on: • roofing system design (panel profile, seams, underlayment) • installation quality (fasteners, flashing, attachment) • material durability (gauge, coating, warranty) Homeowners consider weather resilience to avoid leaks, reduce repair/insurance costs, and extend service life. Interlock Metal Roofing systems are engineered for durability, hail protection, and wind resistance, but achieve best results only with proper design and professional installation.
Corrosion and rust resistance in Belmont, MA: Metal roofing performance depends on the metal—steel, galvalume, copper, zinc, and aluminum each behave differently. Materials with natural oxide layers or corrosion-resistant alloys (aluminum, copper, stainless steel) resist rust better than plain steel. Aluminum is especially well-suited for wet or coastal environments because it forms a protective oxide film, resists saltwater corrosion, and won’t develop iron-based rust. Homeowners should prioritize corrosion resistance to extend roof life, reduce maintenance and repair costs, maintain appearance, and protect home value—especially in Massachusetts’ humid and coastal microclimates. Interlock Metal Roofing systems use aluminum construction engineered for strong corrosion resistance and are further protected by the Alunar Coating System for extra durability and long-term performance.
Metal roofing in Belmont, Massachusetts is generally low maintenance: durable panels and standing seams resist rot, pests and many leak causes. However, no roof is completely maintenance‑free. Homeowners should inspect roofs periodically—after major storms and seasonally—for loose fasteners, damaged flashing, clogged gutters, and buildup of leaves, needles or branches. Pay special attention to roof penetrations (chimneys, vents, skylights) and perimeter flashing where leaks often start. Remove debris, keep gutters flowing, and arrange professional checks after wind, ice or heavy snow events. With proper occasional care, metal roofs offer a long‑lasting, low‑maintenance choice well suited to Belmont’s New England weather. They provide strong value over time.
Yes — in Belmont, MA, metal roofing can increase a home’s resale value. Buyers often prioritize durable, low‑maintenance roofs, so a metal roof that resists weather and reduces upkeep is attractive. Premium materials and finishes also enhance curb appeal, which matters in Belmont’s established neighborhoods. The long lifespan and warranty of quality metal systems boost buyer confidence and can justify higher asking prices. However, architectural style matters: a metal roof should complement the neighborhood’s character and local historic homes to maximize value. Interlock Metal Roofing systems offer multiple architectural profiles—slate, cedar shingle, Mediterranean tile, shake, and standing seam—in heavy‑gauge aluminum and solid copper, enabling both visual fit and long-term performance. Local appraisal impact varies.
Yes. Interlock Metal Roofing systems accept solar panels when fitted with custom solar brackets installed by Interlock Metal Roofing – New England. Belmont averages about 49 in of precipitation and roughly 53 in of snow annually, which increases moisture exposure and snow/ice loading on roofs. Winters are cold and often snowy, driving freeze–thaw cycles that stress roof materials. Because panels last decades, roof lifespan matters: choose long-lasting materials (like Interlock metal) and plan for solar when re‑roofing to avoid removing panels later. Interlock systems are solar‑compatible and designed to support solar mounting solutions.

I’ve had my interlock roof for 14 yrs and have had no issues with it until this last winter. We had heavier than normal snow and a lot of freeze thaw conditions. Several of the snow deflectors were pushed forward and lifted some of the roof. I emailed Dave and Tyler and repairs were made quickly . You can’t tell there was any concerns at all.

Metal Shingle Roof Review in Sudbury, ON (Interlock - Installed 2017)

Review: April 25, 2026

Completion: June 7, 2018

We had our roof replaced in 2017 with an aluminum roof by Interlock Metal Roofing. We live on the lake, and prior to the replacement, we were spending thousands of dollars every year because shingles would fly off in the wind.

We haven’t had any issues in the past 7 years. Our experience with Interlock Metal Roofing was excellent — they were very professional and did a beautiful job, even though our roof is quite high and challenging.

Our roof still looks beautiful, and we haven’t had to worry about it at all in the past 9 years.

I love my Interlock roof! No more climbing up to clean it, and no more gritty debris falling into my garden after a few years. It looks fantastic and performs exactly as it should.

The installers were excellent—knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and personable. Ivan is a gem! He handled a small flashing addition efficiently and cleaned the entire roof with a blower in no time.

After almost ten years, it’s still the only roof I would choose.

Interlock Metal Roof Review - Ramara, ON (Installed 2019)

Completion: April 23, 2026

We are so happy with our interlock roof from Bruce. We had shopped around because we live on the lake with strong winds and we wanted a quality, long lasting product. Our roof has never changed colour and looks just as good now as the day it was installed. We also love the lifetime transferable warranty. We also love that it is made in Canada so there are no tariffs. Bruce was our sales person. He came right away, explained everything to us. We made the right decision not choosing shingles because of the environment and quality of the product. This was an affordable investment that was worth it. The crew was professional in every aspect. If I move, I will definitely be contacting Bruce again for another interlock roof.

Portland, OR Metal Shingles Review — Safety Anchors Installed 2019

Review: April 20, 2026

Completion: June 20, 2019

We’ve had our roof for about 7 years and have been very pleased with it. Recently, I scheduled gutter cleaning which was complicated by a run of wet weather which makes the roof very slippery. The gutter contractor asked if we had ever considered installing safety anchors. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I called Interlock and Ivan came by to take a look. He quickly determined appropriate locations for the anchors that the gutter cleaners could clip their safety harnesses to and showed me an example of the anchor itself. He also offered to paint them black to make them more inconspicuous on our dark roof. He returned about a week later for the install and afterwards showed us pictures of the anchors from the roof and pointed them out from the ground. Overall very professional, prompt, excellent service.

Interlock Metal Shingle Roof Review in Bay View, WI (Installed 2009)

Completion: February 20, 2009

I had Interlock put on a beautiful red slate roof 17 years ago.The roof still looks beautiful. 5 years ago, I had them also re-roof my garage with the same type of slate. The roofs look gorgeous and I have no maintenance whatsoever.I get complements all the time. The guy whom I contracted with was named "Tim' but has since died. He was a really nice guy. Back in 2009, the roof was much cheaper. ( I actually paid more for the garage 5 years ago!) I am extremely happy with the roofs. The guys did a wonderful job, replacing rotted boards where necessary. They also told me about very cheap gutters I could buy at Menards instead of those ridiculously - priced "special" gutter systems. I bought them and they placed them on my buildings. This home will go to my daughter one day; I do not want her to have to lift a finger. Note that I had an asphalt roof previously. It lasted only 12 years. The shingles curled up under the sun and cracked. They looked terrible. I can honestly say that these metals roofs by Interlock are very much worth what you pay for them. They will last a lifetime with almost no maintenance. Instead of replacing a roof every 15 years and paying lots for asphalt or fiberglass, their metal roofs last very long and you will never have to re- roof again.

Interlock Metal Roofing Review in Saint Paul, AB — 50-Year Warranty (Installed 2025)

Review: April 15, 2026

Completion: August 31, 2025

We recently installed a new Interlock Roofing System, and we couldn’t be happier with the decision. Knowing it’s backed by a limited lifetime, non-prorated, fully transferable 50-year warranty gives us real peace of mind—it truly feels like a smart long-term investment. Mr. Yorman and his crew were outstanding from start to finish. Their commitment to customer service is second to none. They showed up exactly when they said they would and worked diligently until the job was completed. The finished product looks fantastic, and the cleanup was so thorough that our property actually looked better than before they arrived. A special mention to Tyler, who did an excellent job walking us through the benefits and helping us feel confident in choosing this system. Overall, a great experience and highly recommended!

I recently had my 25 year old asphalt roof replaced with an Interlock Metal roof. I'm so very happy with my decision. In fact, best decision ever to have Interlock Industries install. The metal roof is manufactured in Delta, BC and they have their own installers. It's not panels! It looks very much like a cedar roof! Colour is awesome as well! My home is located in Victoria on Vancouver Island and looks great with my new roof! Interlock is a very professional business from contract signing to installation. Amazing crew that gets the job done in a timely manner. My roof looks fabulous. It's a work of art!!

Aurora, ON Metal Roofing Review — Interlock Installation (2016)

Review: April 13, 2026

Completion: May 3, 2016

We moved into our new house in 1984. Our new house came with new 25 year shingles. In 2004, 20 years later we noticed that our roof shingles needed to be redone. Now, back in 1984 they used asbestos in the roof shingles and although at the time they said they were 25 year shingles, we were still happy to get 20 years out of them. So, in 2004 we got a quote and had the roof re-shingled. We paid extra for the 25 year shingles as we had such a good result with the original shingles. In 2016 (i.e. 12 years later) my neighbour told us that our shingles on the south side of the house were cracked with rolled up edges and needed to be replaced. (We can't see the south roof of our house unless we are visiting the neighbours.) The shingles on the north side were still ok, but since you can't really shingle half a roof we knew that we had to have the whole roof done...after just 12 years. We were a little upset about this and decided to go to the National Home Show in Toronto to look at alternatives. We met Tom Watson at the Interlock Metal Roofing booth and he took a lot of time and explained the complete roofing system to us. We liked what we saw and what was explained to us and we arranged to have a home visit from Interlock and to give us a quote. The metal roof was certainly a lot more expensive than a regular asphalt shingle roof, but we decided to get the metal roof anyways because we did not want the hassle of having to re-shingle every 10 or 11 years...and there are also some other unforeseen benefits detailed below that we did not know about at the time. The metal roof comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty, 50 year transferable, not prorated so even though more expensive it adds value to lyour home because if in the future you are looking to sell, the buyer knows he won't have any roof problems for the 50 year life of the roof. Your roof becomes an asset instead of a liability. The installation happened over 4-5 days. I paid a lot of attention to what they were doing and how they were doing it. The roof vents were removed. These are the same roof vents that raccoons like to rip off for access to your attic, so that potential problem went away. A ridge vent (google it) was installed on the top of the roof and it is low profile and fits in so you would not know that it is there. Raccoons have been known to chew a hole in asphalt shingles and roofing plywood to get into your attic. With a metal roof, it isn't happening. That mode of access is eliminated. Now, with our previous asphalt shingles we had constant problems with raccoons pooping on our roof (sound familiar?) and for some reason, at least for the last 10 years that we have had the metal roof, that has not happened. I don't know why, but I can speculate that the raccoons find the metal roof very slippery and they are not comfortable being up there and doing their business while trying not to slide off the roof. Also, in the past we have had squirrels occasionally make their way through, under, beside our asphalt shingles and get into our attic. That will never happen with a metal roof because the whole roof is sealed and northing is getting that way. If you are concerned about high winds ripping off your shingles you don't have to worry with a metal roof. Each and every metal shingle is fastened to the roof with aluminum screws (note the metal roof shingles are painted and baked to a tough finish) and they are interlocked with each other, so you may lose your entire roof in a hurricane, but the metal shingles will still be attached to it. We moved into our new house in 1984. After about 2 years of sweating through humid summers, we installed an A/C system. Our new A/C system worked ok in that it removed the humidity and cooled the house, but with the high 37 deg C temperatures it was struggling. The A/C would run continuously and never stopped on those hot days, but once the metal roof was installed it cycled on and off as designed. We highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing.

We had our roofed replaced by Interlock Roofing in 2016. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made! Our roof looks like slate shingles but is entirely metal. We e received many compliments on it over the years Recently we had a lot of strong wind and hailstorms and our representative, John Mondeshean, checked in with us to see if we sustained any roof damage. He came out and inspected our roof for us within a day or two. Luckily we didn’t have any damage. I’ve been impressed by this company and their product from day one. John is the consummate professional. Our roof is now 10 years old and I still say it was the best investment! Highly recommend!
