What our customers are saying:

★★★☆☆
Review: January 15, 2025 Completion: August 21, 2000

Based on my original review below, Interlock reached out and was explicit about wanting to know what needed to be done to receive a better review. My experience with Interlock since that point has been excellent. First, the customer service person (Jen) became very responsive. The technician (who I had positive things to say about below) continued to be knowledgeable and focused on doing the job right. The technician applied new caulking around the chimney, alerted me to issues with the chimney cap (not in scope), and completely re-installed the flashing where our original house meets a lower roof (what was the issue resulting in significant exterior, structural wall damage). The technician explained that installation methods for the Interlock product have changed over the years and what was installed originally is no longer the way flashing is installed today. This latest set of interactions with Interlock gives me greater confidence that we would continue to use Interlock for any additions to the house needing roofing (e.g., a portico over the front door, an addition over the garage). If their current technician in the Boston area is an indication of current install quality, then you will have no issues or complaints about the product. I just feel badly for all the folks with older Interlock roofs, like me, where installation methods were unacceptable. Original Review: We bought a house with an Interlock roof. I really want to like Interlock. It seems like a nice product. Unfortunately, the roof installation cut proverbial corners and getting service for the roof has been extremely difficult. For the sake of giving credit where due, their roofer that collaborated with our solar installer was competent. Sadly that is not universally the case. When we first moved in, one of the first things I noticed was that the metal roof installation, over an existing composite roof, makes the unfortunate assumption that the flashing under the old roof is in good shape and will continue to operate. As such on one section of roof that abuts the main house, the flashing was fastened to the side of the wood siding, allowing rain running down the side of the house to go behind the flashing down to, theoretically, the original roof and flashing. Another roof that abuts the main house was installed by Interlock without flashing by shoving it up under the wood siding. This has expedited wood rot of the siding and has not prevented water leaks that completely rotted a significant portion of the exterior wall of the main house. It is crazy to me that anyone would install a roof without ensuring it is flashed properly. Beyond that, trying to work with Interlock to collaborate with our solar installer was a very painful process. Due to Interlock not reading the solar installation plans or passing them along to their roofer, they were not prepared to help with the solar rail installation, leading the solar installer to have to eat the cost of a crew of 8 people that could not do the install as planned as the right roof flashing was not available. Thank goodness the Interlock roofer was willing to not proceed without the right flashing, but it would have been better had the right preparation been made. There is now a leak around the chimney of the house. I have been trying to schedule service with Interlock for over a month and a half. Their "system" has been down for over two months so they cannot find records regarding the roof on my house. They have also been unable to schedule me for service, consistently passing messages along to a local affiliate of some sort that keeps telling me that they can't schedule for service until their system comes back up. I hope I can eventually update this post with some good news, but as of right now I have a list of reasons you should avoid this company.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Belmont

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Belmont, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Belmont.

Does a metal roof handle heavy snow and ice buildup in Belmont winters?

Yes—the four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow and ice effectively because the smooth surface and panel overlap prevent water from pooling. Belmont receives about 84 cm of snow annually with roughly 76 freeze-thaw cycles per year, a cycle that can crack asphalt shingles but won't damage aluminum, which expands and contracts uniformly. The lightweight profile (the Slate installs at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no structural reinforcement is needed even when snow accumulates, and you can add snow guards if you want controlled shedding.

Why won't freeze-thaw cycling damage an aluminum metal roof?

Aluminum naturally handles repeated freeze-thaw stress because it expands uniformly and doesn't absorb moisture the way asphalt or wood does. Your area experiences about 76 freeze-thaw days annually, creating constant expansion and contraction—exactly the condition that causes asphalt shingles to crack and curl over time. Roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy expands with temperature swings but returns to its original state without degradation, year after year. Unlike materials that trap moisture and split when water freezes inside them, aluminum has no pores to absorb water.

Can aluminum roofing rust or corrode in Massachusetts weather?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the metal that causes rust in steel. Instead, aluminum naturally forms a self-healing oxide layer that actually protects the surface. When scratched or exposed, this layer reforms automatically. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating on both sides of each panel (warranted 30 years against chalking and fading) adds another shield, making it exceptionally durable in Belmont's humid climate with 1065 mm of annual rainfall. This two-layer protection system is why Interlock panels have been installed from coastal salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station since 1998.

Will a metal roof blow off in Belmont's wind storms?

No—Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Belmont's typical gusts reach about 130 km/h, and the interlocking design distributes wind load across the entire roof system rather than stressing individual fasteners. The panels interlock on all four sides, creating a unified structure that moves as one unit. This same technology protects it against the variable wind pressures that can lift and separate conventional shingles, making metal roofing a more stable choice in New England's unpredictable seasonal wind patterns.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles over 40+ years?

Yes—metal roofing is the last roof you buy. Asphalt typically lasts 15–20 years and requires professional tear-off and landfill disposal every cycle; Interlock comes with a lifetime limited non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, transferable to the next owner for 50 years from completion. One metal roof replacement avoids multiple asphalt cycles, labor costs, and disposal fees. Current regional promotion offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, dramatically reducing the initial gap. Over a 40-year ownership span in Belmont, aluminum's durability against freeze-thaw stress (76 days annually), heavy rain (1065 mm/year), and wind gusts (130 km/h) means fewer emergency repairs and replacements.

Can my house's existing roof frame support metal roofing, or do I need structural work?

No structural reinforcement is needed—Interlock's extraordinary lightness is a major advantage. The Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, the Shake at 0.58 lb/sq ft, and even the Mediterranean Tile (which looks like traditional clay or concrete tile) installs at only 0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than real tile. Most existing roofs can support this weight without modification. The roof can install directly over your current asphalt shingles, eliminating tear-off cost and labor. This lightweight advantage is why Interlock panels install on everything from residential homes to specialized structures, without triggering costly structural evaluation or reinforcement that traditional slate or tile would demand.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really need compared to asphalt or wood?

Metal roofing needs far less maintenance than asphalt, wood shake, or tile. Asphalt degrades from UV exposure (Belmont receives about 3109 sunshine hours annually) and requires regular inspection for curling, cracking, and granule loss. Wood shake splits and rots under freeze-thaw stress and heavy rainfall (1065 mm/year). Tile cracks and requires professional repair. Interlock aluminum is verified by CALGreen for reduced maintenance—the Alunar 70% PVDF coating protects against chalking and fading, and the smooth, interlocked design sheds debris and prevents pooling. Occasional gutter cleaning and inspection is standard roof care; you won't face the recurring repairs that asphalt, wood, or tile demand.

Is a metal roof fire-safe for my Belmont home?

Yes—Interlock roofing is non-combustible aluminum and achieves Class A fire classification, the highest fire rating available. Aluminum itself cannot burn or contribute fuel to a fire, so the roof won't ignite or spread flames, a critical safety feature for any home. This non-combustible construction also means the roof is compliant with ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 (IBC/IRC, reissued 2025), meeting Massachusetts building codes. Some homeowners insurance carriers offer discounts for Class A fire-rated roofing, and some municipalities with wildfire risk or strict fire codes prefer or require it. Even though Belmont's risk profile differs from high-fire areas, the non-combustible property is a permanent safety advantage.

Is metal roofing actually better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Yes—aluminum roofing breaks the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle. Each time asphalt shingles fail (roughly every 15–20 years), they're torn off, hauled to a landfill, and replaced; over a century, that's multiple disposal events and the energy cost of repeated installation. Interlock panels are approximately 95% recyclable; at end of life, they're reclaimed and remelted into new products rather than landfilled. The lightweight design (0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft) also means lower fuel consumption during transport. In Belmont's 1065 mm of annual rainfall and variable freeze-thaw conditions, aluminum's durability means fewer replacement cycles and fewer environmental impacts per year of service.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Belmont, and how experienced are they?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. serves Belmont and the surrounding region—they've been installing Interlock systems since 1999, giving them over two decades of local experience with New England's specific climate challenges: heavy snow (84 cm/year), frequent freeze-thaw cycling (76 days annually), and salt-laden air near coastal areas. Their familiarity with Massachusetts building codes, local permitting, and the region's weather patterns means faster, code-compliant installation. They understand how to handle snow load, wind gust exposure, and the moisture dynamics of your area. Current regional promotion includes no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation—contact them for a site evaluation and timeline.
