Review: January 15, 2025 Completion: August 21, 2000

Based on my original review below, Interlock reached out and was explicit about wanting to know what needed to be done to receive a better review. My experience with Interlock since that point has been excellent. First, the customer service person (Jen) became very responsive. The technician (who I had positive things to say about below) continued to be knowledgeable and focused on doing the job right. The technician applied new caulking around the chimney, alerted me to issues with the chimney cap (not in scope), and completely re-installed the flashing where our original house meets a lower roof (what was the issue resulting in significant exterior, structural wall damage). The technician explained that installation methods for the Interlock product have changed over the years and what was installed originally is no longer the way flashing is installed today. This latest set of interactions with Interlock gives me greater confidence that we would continue to use Interlock for any additions to the house needing roofing (e.g., a portico over the front door, an addition over the garage). If their current technician in the Boston area is an indication of current install quality, then you will have no issues or complaints about the product. I just feel badly for all the folks with older Interlock roofs, like me, where installation methods were unacceptable. Original Review: We bought a house with an Interlock roof. I really want to like Interlock. It seems like a nice product. Unfortunately, the roof installation cut proverbial corners and getting service for the roof has been extremely difficult. For the sake of giving credit where due, their roofer that collaborated with our solar installer was competent. Sadly that is not universally the case. When we first moved in, one of the first things I noticed was that the metal roof installation, over an existing composite roof, makes the unfortunate assumption that the flashing under the old roof is in good shape and will continue to operate. As such on one section of roof that abuts the main house, the flashing was fastened to the side of the wood siding, allowing rain running down the side of the house to go behind the flashing down to, theoretically, the original roof and flashing. Another roof that abuts the main house was installed by Interlock without flashing by shoving it up under the wood siding. This has expedited wood rot of the siding and has not prevented water leaks that completely rotted a significant portion of the exterior wall of the main house. It is crazy to me that anyone would install a roof without ensuring it is flashed properly. Beyond that, trying to work with Interlock to collaborate with our solar installer was a very painful process. Due to Interlock not reading the solar installation plans or passing them along to their roofer, they were not prepared to help with the solar rail installation, leading the solar installer to have to eat the cost of a crew of 8 people that could not do the install as planned as the right roof flashing was not available. Thank goodness the Interlock roofer was willing to not proceed without the right flashing, but it would have been better had the right preparation been made. There is now a leak around the chimney of the house. I have been trying to schedule service with Interlock for over a month and a half. Their "system" has been down for over two months so they cannot find records regarding the roof on my house. They have also been unable to schedule me for service, consistently passing messages along to a local affiliate of some sort that keeps telling me that they can't schedule for service until their system comes back up. I hope I can eventually update this post with some good news, but as of right now I have a list of reasons you should avoid this company.

Review: June 21, 2009 Completion: June 21, 2009

We recently had a metal shingle roof installed by Interlock Roofing from Waltham, MA. The company coordinated the delivery of materials and dumpster pick-up. The work crew treated our home and belongings with consideration and respect. I happened to come home while one gentleman cleared the furniture and plants (there were many) from the deck. He moved our tomato plants one at a time as though they were very valuable to him. They worked very hard at our home for four days, two of which were twelve-hour days for them. This was the direct result of the work ethic of Baha, the crew chief. He was fabulous. They worked Saturday and Sunday, which happened to be Father’s Day, in the rain to finish our roof in the time frame they initially told us. He checked in with us frequently for feedback, and we developed quite a rapport. He is a master craftsman. There is no other way to describe the quality of his work. He was concerned that every shingle is the best. He hand-shaped many of them, and it shows. He improved the original plan for the placement of snow guards. The roof is extremely well done, and we are proud of it and the people who did it. We expected our yard to be a mess when the roof was finished. There was no mess. None of our perennials were damaged, and we have several next to the house. One man used a magnet to pick up the nails on the ground from removing the old roof. Baha even had one of his men push the materials in the dumpster down so that it would look as nice as possible for the twelve hours it sat full in our yard.

Thank you so much for meeting with us to arrange the purchase of a new roof by Interlock. It’s gorgeous! It is so comforting to know that our roof is now safe from leaks and ugliness. We had a few obvious leaks every time it rained or snowed, and that hasn’t happened since our new roof was completed. We have seen several people “looking” as they " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">walk or drive by, and several neighbors have made comments as to how great it looks. This was a job that we put off for years – and now we’re so glad that we have done it! What a great crew you had – they were polite – they did the work, and they cleaned up beautifully (even better than how they found it – to our pleasure). The roof was delivered as promised – on time! The crew worked long hours to get it completed, and although we had bad weather on a few of those days – the work was completed in a week! They never interfered with our own schedule and despite the hammering which comes with any job of this nature – we just knew they were getting the work done as expeditiously as possible – working until the available light made it unsafe to continue for the day. Thank you – Interlock is a great company with a product that is sure to give us many years of security, knowing that our roof will surely outlast us and that we don’t have to worry about any future roofing jobs. You were very accommodating and a pleasure to work with! It is great to know that we now have the “best roof” on the block – not the worst!

This is to give you feedback on our recent Interlock roof installation. The installation, including stripping the old roofing, went very well and cleaned up was as I had expected. This is an old house with dormers, and even since I have lived here (since 1956), it has had various leak problems that were never solved with new asphalt shingle jobs. Within a week of completion of the Interlock Roof, we had a heavy wet snowstorm and two days of wind-driven rains. Everything is dry. Also, we get lots of comments from passersby about how nice the roof looks. You can consider me satisfied.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Newton Corner

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Newton Corner, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Newton Corner.

Does a metal roof handle Newton Corner's snow and ice load?

Yes—aluminum's light weight and smooth interlocking surface naturally shed snow without the structural strain that slate or concrete tile would impose. Newton Corner averages about 84 cm of snow annually over roughly 76 freeze-thaw cycles per year, a combination that can crack brittle materials and trap ice dams. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels prevent water seepage during thaw cycles, and the smooth profiles accelerate snow movement off the roof. You can add snow guards if steeper pitches require it. Aluminum's thermal conductivity also discourages ice-dam formation compared to materials that insulate heat into the attic.

Will freeze-thaw cycles crack or degrade aluminum roofing over time?

No. Aluminum has no iron and cannot rust or rot, making it impervious to the damage freeze-thaw cycling causes to asphalt, wood shake, or slate. Newton Corner experiences roughly 76 freeze-thaw days per year with average annual precipitation around 1065 mm—conditions that cause asphalt to become brittle, wood to split, and slate to spall. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating on both panel sides is warranted for 30 years against degradation (ASTM D4214/D2244 rated), so the finish itself remains stable through decades of thermal cycling. The Guardian lifetime limited warranty covers cracking and splitting, reflecting confidence in aluminum's durability in this climate.

Can heavy rain penetrate aluminum roof seams?

The four-way interlocking system and overlapping seams are engineered to shed Newton Corner's annual 1065 mm of rainfall without pooling. Water drains immediately through the interlocked connection points rather than collecting at panel edges. Installed over a solid deck with underlayment—standard practice—the roof performs identically to asphalt in rain protection, with the added advantage that aluminum will never develop the pinhole leaks asphalt shingles suffer after 15–20 years of UV exposure and thermal stress. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 certifies the assembly to IRC/IBC standards, which include heavy-rain performance testing. Ice-backed water from Newton Corner's seasonal thaw also drains freely because the smooth panel surface resists water pooling that slate or tile would trap.

How does Interlock metal roofing perform in Newton Corner's wind and gust conditions?

Interlock is warranted to resist sustained winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Newton Corner experiences typical daily-maximum winds around 22 km/h with gusts reaching 130 km/h—well within the roof's rated capacity. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels create mechanical overlap that resists uplift; no fasteners are exposed to wind pressure. This design has proven effective from coastal salt-air installations to polar research stations, where wind loads often exceed even Boston's occasional nor'easters. The warranty explicitly covers wind performance, so you have documented protection against the gust speeds Newton Corner sees.

Does Interlock metal roofing qualify for hail-damage insurance discounts?

Interlock carries UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurers recognize Class 4 ratings and offer premium discounts for non-degradable roofing materials. Contact your agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 certification and ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation report; aluminum's non-combustibility and impact resistance often qualify for favorable underwriting. Unlike asphalt, which loses impact resistance over time and requires replacement after severe hail, aluminum retains its Class 4 rating for life. Newton Corner's occasional severe thunderstorms are no long-term threat to this material, making it a sound insurance consideration.

Is aluminum roofing light enough to install over my existing roof without structural work?

Yes. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at approximately 0.59 lb/sq ft, about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This means no structural reinforcement is required for most existing residential framing in Newton Corner, even though the profile visually replicates heavy masonry materials. The Slate installs at roughly 0.41 lb/sq ft. Because aluminum weighs far less than the roof deck can safely bear, over-roof installation is routine, eliminating the labor and waste of a full teardown. Your existing attic framing, already sized for asphalt shingles and snow loads like Newton Corner's 84 cm annual average, easily supports aluminum installation without engineering upgrades.

What ongoing maintenance does an aluminum metal roof actually require?

Aluminum requires minimal maintenance compared to asphalt, wood shake, or tile. No seasonal shingle replacements, no algae treatment, no re-caulking deteriorated seams, and no wood rot inspections. Newton Corner's approximately 1065 mm annual rainfall and 3109 sunshine hours mean UV exposure and moisture cycling—conditions that degrade asphalt shingles and weather wood shake within 15–20 years. Aluminum's oxide layer self-heals when scratched, requiring no touch-up coatings. CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance burden, Interlock roofing needs only occasional gutter cleaning and, in coastal areas, a rinse if salt spray deposits accumulate. The Guardian warranty does not require annual inspections or maintenance documentation, reflecting the material's passive durability. Budget for essentially no roof maintenance costs over decades.

What does the Interlock warranty actually cover, and how long does it last?

The Guardian lifetime limited warranty is non-prorated for the original owner and covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—the failure modes that end asphalt and wood roofs by year 20–25. The warranty is transferable once, giving the next owner 50 years of coverage from the completion date, adding resale appeal. Unlike prorated warranties that decline yearly, this coverage means full claim eligibility if any of those defects appear in year 29 or year 50. Newton Corner's 76 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 1065 mm rainfall would trigger premature failure in asphalt shingles; aluminum's immunity to rust and rot means the warranty cost is genuinely low-risk for the manufacturer. This is the last roof you will install.

Why can't aluminum roofing rust like steel, and does that matter in Massachusetts?

Aluminum contains no iron—iron is what rusts when exposed to oxygen and moisture. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloys (ASTM B209 certified) that form a self-healing oxide layer when exposed to air. If scratched during installation, the layer reforms automatically, re-sealing the metal below. Newton Corner's approximately 1065 mm annual precipitation and seasonal thaw create the moisture exposure that causes steel roofing to fail within 10–15 years and triggers rust stains on gutters and trim. Aluminum roofing installed in coastal salt-air environments (higher corrosion risk than Newton Corner) has performed since 1998 without rust degradation. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both panel sides provides an additional 30-year coating warranty, creating a two-layer corrosion barrier. Massachusetts humidity will not compromise this material.

Do Interlock's reflective coatings actually reduce cooling costs in New England?

Yes, for warm months. Interlock offers energy-efficient colors with thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), Cool Roof Rating Council certified. Newton Corner receives approximately 3109 annual sunshine hours, concentrating in spring through early autumn; reflective finishes reduce attic heat absorption during those months, lowering AC demand. The effect is modest compared to southern climates, but measurable—reflecting heat that dark asphalt absorbs does lower summer cooling loads. Winter heating benefit comes from the fact that aluminum roofing's durability means you avoid the asphalt roof's end-of-life replacement cycle, which eliminates the landfill impact of shingle disposal. The energy advantage is both immediate (cooler summers) and lifecycle-based (no tear-off waste).
