Review: June 21, 2009 Completion: June 21, 2009

We recently had a metal shingle roof installed by Interlock Roofing from Waltham, MA. The company coordinated the delivery of materials and dumpster pick-up. The work crew treated our home and belongings with consideration and respect. I happened to come home while one gentleman cleared the furniture and plants (there were many) from the deck. He moved our tomato plants one at a time as though they were very valuable to him. They worked very hard at our home for four days, two of which were twelve-hour days for them. This was the direct result of the work ethic of Baha, the crew chief. He was fabulous. They worked Saturday and Sunday, which happened to be Father’s Day, in the rain to finish our roof in the time frame they initially told us. He checked in with us frequently for feedback, and we developed quite a rapport. He is a master craftsman. There is no other way to describe the quality of his work. He was concerned that every shingle is the best. He hand-shaped many of them, and it shows. He improved the original plan for the placement of snow guards. The roof is extremely well done, and we are proud of it and the people who did it. We expected our yard to be a mess when the roof was finished. There was no mess. None of our perennials were damaged, and we have several next to the house. One man used a magnet to pick up the nails on the ground from removing the old roof. Baha even had one of his men push the materials in the dumpster down so that it would look as nice as possible for the twelve hours it sat full in our yard.

Review: January 15, 2025 Completion: August 21, 2000

Based on my original review below, Interlock reached out and was explicit about wanting to know what needed to be done to receive a better review. My experience with Interlock since that point has been excellent. First, the customer service person (Jen) became very responsive. The technician (who I had positive things to say about below) continued to be knowledgeable and focused on doing the job right. The technician applied new caulking around the chimney, alerted me to issues with the chimney cap (not in scope), and completely re-installed the flashing where our original house meets a lower roof (what was the issue resulting in significant exterior, structural wall damage). The technician explained that installation methods for the Interlock product have changed over the years and what was installed originally is no longer the way flashing is installed today. This latest set of interactions with Interlock gives me greater confidence that we would continue to use Interlock for any additions to the house needing roofing (e.g., a portico over the front door, an addition over the garage). If their current technician in the Boston area is an indication of current install quality, then you will have no issues or complaints about the product. I just feel badly for all the folks with older Interlock roofs, like me, where installation methods were unacceptable. Original Review: We bought a house with an Interlock roof. I really want to like Interlock. It seems like a nice product. Unfortunately, the roof installation cut proverbial corners and getting service for the roof has been extremely difficult. For the sake of giving credit where due, their roofer that collaborated with our solar installer was competent. Sadly that is not universally the case. When we first moved in, one of the first things I noticed was that the metal roof installation, over an existing composite roof, makes the unfortunate assumption that the flashing under the old roof is in good shape and will continue to operate. As such on one section of roof that abuts the main house, the flashing was fastened to the side of the wood siding, allowing rain running down the side of the house to go behind the flashing down to, theoretically, the original roof and flashing. Another roof that abuts the main house was installed by Interlock without flashing by shoving it up under the wood siding. This has expedited wood rot of the siding and has not prevented water leaks that completely rotted a significant portion of the exterior wall of the main house. It is crazy to me that anyone would install a roof without ensuring it is flashed properly. Beyond that, trying to work with Interlock to collaborate with our solar installer was a very painful process. Due to Interlock not reading the solar installation plans or passing them along to their roofer, they were not prepared to help with the solar rail installation, leading the solar installer to have to eat the cost of a crew of 8 people that could not do the install as planned as the right roof flashing was not available. Thank goodness the Interlock roofer was willing to not proceed without the right flashing, but it would have been better had the right preparation been made. There is now a leak around the chimney of the house. I have been trying to schedule service with Interlock for over a month and a half. Their "system" has been down for over two months so they cannot find records regarding the roof on my house. They have also been unable to schedule me for service, consistently passing messages along to a local affiliate of some sort that keeps telling me that they can't schedule for service until their system comes back up. I hope I can eventually update this post with some good news, but as of right now I have a list of reasons you should avoid this company.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Newton Upper Falls

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Newton Upper Falls.

Will a metal roof handle Massachusetts freeze-thaw cycles without damage?

Yes—aluminum's non-corrosive oxide layer actually strengthens under repeated freeze-thaw stress, unlike asphalt or wood. Newton Upper Falls experiences roughly 76 freeze-thaw days annually, combined with about 84 cm of snow and 1065 mm of rain, creating constant material expansion and contraction. Interlock's roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is engineered for exactly this cycling; it has no iron, so it cannot rust even when water penetrates cracks or pooling occurs. The four-way interlocking panels distribute movement across the entire roof, preventing the splitting and curling that plague asphalt shingles in similar climates.

How does a metal roof perform with heavy snow loads and ice dams?

Metal roofs shed snow more efficiently than asphalt because their smooth, slick surface creates less friction, reducing ice-dam formation that traps meltwater behind gutters. At about 84 cm of annual snowfall in Newton Upper Falls, this matters: less snow hanging on the roof means less weight stress and fewer leak points where ice backs up. Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind gusts up to 120 mph, a strength that also anchors them securely under snow pressure. Optional snow guards can be installed if you prefer snow retention for aesthetic reasons. The lightweight design—roughly 0.41 lb/sq ft for the Shingle profile—means no additional structural reinforcement is required, even where snow loads concentrate.

Does a metal roof really hold up to hail, and can it lower my insurance costs?

Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That aluminum is non-combustible and literally cannot rust gives insurers confidence in long-term durability; many regional carriers now offer discounts for metal roofs rated Class 4. Newton Upper Falls sits in a region with occasional severe thunderstorms and wind gusts averaging about 22 km/h with peaks near 130 km/h, conditions that can produce hail. Unlike asphalt shingles that dent and lose granules (reducing impact resistance over time), aluminum maintains its Class 4 rating for the life of the roof. Contact your insurer with the ESR-1790 evaluation number and UL rating—they often recognize this documentation immediately.

Why doesn't aluminum rust like steel roofing, and why does that matter here?

Aluminum contains no iron—the element that oxidizes into rust—so rusting is physically impossible. Instead, aluminum's surface naturally forms a thin, self-healing oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath. In Newton Upper Falls' moist, freeze-thaw climate with 84 cm of snow and frequent moisture cycling, this immunity eliminates the slow corrosion that steel roofing endures, even when painted. Interlock panels use roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) with a Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating applied to both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. When you scratch the coating, the underlying aluminum regenerates its protective oxide; scratch asphalt or steel, and degradation begins. Over 25–50 years, this difference saves thousands in repairs.

Can a metal roof withstand New England wind and storm gusts?

Interlock's four-way interlocking design is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Newton Upper Falls experiences typical daily winds around 22 km/h with occasional gusts exceeding 130 km/h during nor'easters, putting mechanical fastening and panel overlap under real stress. Four-way interlocking means each panel locks to neighbors on all four edges—top, bottom, left, right—so a gust cannot lift or separate a single panel; the entire roof moves as one anchored system. The lightweight aluminum (less than 0.6 lb/sq ft) also reduces wind leverage compared to slate or tile; there is simply less surface for wind to catch and lift. This is why the same panels have been installed on Antarctic research stations where katabatic winds exceed 100 mph regularly.

Will I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed—in fact, Interlock's extreme lightness is one of its primary advantages. The Mediterranean Tile profile, which visually replicates heavy clay or concrete tile, installs at roughly 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it about 96% lighter than the real thing. That means you can install Interlock over most existing asphalt, wood, or composite roofs without engineer approval or framing upgrades. Newton Upper Falls averages about 84 cm of snow annually; even under full snow load, the total weight per square foot remains a fraction of what traditional tile demands. This lightweight design also means faster installation, lower labor costs, and the ability to reroof older homes whose original framing was never designed for slate or tile. Your roofer can typically complete the job in days rather than weeks.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really require?

Interlock requires minimal maintenance compared to asphalt, wood, or clay tile. Asphalt shingles need annual inspection, debris removal, and algae treatment; wood shake demands re-sealing every few years and splits under freeze-thaw stress; tile requires mortar repointing and moss removal in moist climates like Newton Upper Falls (1065 mm rain, 76 freeze-thaw days yearly). Aluminum panels are CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance: they do not rot, crack, curl, or lose granules. Twice yearly, clear debris from gutters and valleys; once yearly, inspect fasteners. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating (warranted 30 years) resists chalking and fading even through New England's 3109 annual sunshine hours, so repainting is unnecessary. The Guardian Warranty's non-prorated coverage for the original owner means no hidden maintenance surprises.

Will a metal roof really reduce my cooling costs in summer?

energy-efficient Interlock colors achieve initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning they bounce summer heat away rather than absorbing and radiating it into your attic like asphalt does. In Newton Upper Falls, with about 3109 annual sunshine hours and typical summer highs, this reflectance translates to lower air-conditioning demand and cooler interior temperatures, especially in upper stories. Dark asphalt absorbs nearly all sunlight; Interlock's lighter profiles stay cooler, reducing attic temperature by 20–40 degrees on sunny days. The Cool Roof Rating Council rates these colors specifically. Even in a climate where winter heating dominates, summer cooling savings add up over 25–50 years. Combined with the roof's longevity, lower maintenance cost, and transferable 50-year warranty term, energy efficiency is an ancillary gain, not the primary one.

What's the installation process, and can you install over my existing roof?

Interlock installs over solid decking with underlayment, usually over your existing asphalt or composite roof, eliminating the cost and landfill impact of tear-off. A typical installation takes 3–5 days for a standard residential roof; the lightweight panels (under 0.6 lb/sq ft) require no structural work and no reinforcement. Installers secure panels with corrosion-resistant fasteners and cover flashing with metal caps. Because the panels are installed on top rather than stripped and rebuilt, your home remains weather-sealed throughout the project. In Newton Upper Falls' wet climate (1065 mm annual rain, 84 cm snow), avoiding a torn-off roof exposed to weather is a significant advantage. Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served the region since 1999 and can walk you through timeline, permitting, and scheduling. Current promotion offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation.

Is a metal roof better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Interlock's aluminum is roughly 95% recyclable at end-of-life, breaking the cycle of asphalt shingles that end up in landfills every 15–20 years. Newton Upper Falls residents who reroof 2–3 times over a lifetime generate thousands of pounds of waste; Interlock's 50-year transferable warranty (lifetime for the original owner) means fewer installations and zero tear-off debris per household. The panels are manufactured in Delta, BC, from recycled and virgin aluminum, and their lightweight design (0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft) reduces transportation fuel compared to slate or tile. Because you install Interlock over your existing roof—no demolition—job-site waste is minimal. At the end of 50+ years, aluminum scrap has value; asphalt shingles do not. Over a century of home ownership, aluminum roofing dramatically reduces environmental impact and landfill burden compared to multiple asphalt replacements.
