Review: June 21, 2009 Completion: June 21, 2009

We recently had a metal shingle roof installed by Interlock Roofing from Waltham, MA. The company coordinated the delivery of materials and dumpster pick-up. The work crew treated our home and belongings with consideration and respect. I happened to come home while one gentleman cleared the furniture and plants (there were many) from the deck. He moved our tomato plants one at a time as though they were very valuable to him. They worked very hard at our home for four days, two of which were twelve-hour days for them. This was the direct result of the work ethic of Baha, the crew chief. He was fabulous. They worked Saturday and Sunday, which happened to be Father’s Day, in the rain to finish our roof in the time frame they initially told us. He checked in with us frequently for feedback, and we developed quite a rapport. He is a master craftsman. There is no other way to describe the quality of his work. He was concerned that every shingle is the best. He hand-shaped many of them, and it shows. He improved the original plan for the placement of snow guards. The roof is extremely well done, and we are proud of it and the people who did it. We expected our yard to be a mess when the roof was finished. There was no mess. None of our perennials were damaged, and we have several next to the house. One man used a magnet to pick up the nails on the ground from removing the old roof. Baha even had one of his men push the materials in the dumpster down so that it would look as nice as possible for the twelve hours it sat full in our yard.

Review: January 15, 2025 Completion: August 21, 2000

Based on my original review below, Interlock reached out and was explicit about wanting to know what needed to be done to receive a better review. My experience with Interlock since that point has been excellent. First, the customer service person (Jen) became very responsive. The technician (who I had positive things to say about below) continued to be knowledgeable and focused on doing the job right. The technician applied new caulking around the chimney, alerted me to issues with the chimney cap (not in scope), and completely re-installed the flashing where our original house meets a lower roof (what was the issue resulting in significant exterior, structural wall damage). The technician explained that installation methods for the Interlock product have changed over the years and what was installed originally is no longer the way flashing is installed today. This latest set of interactions with Interlock gives me greater confidence that we would continue to use Interlock for any additions to the house needing roofing (e.g., a portico over the front door, an addition over the garage). If their current technician in the Boston area is an indication of current install quality, then you will have no issues or complaints about the product. I just feel badly for all the folks with older Interlock roofs, like me, where installation methods were unacceptable. Original Review: We bought a house with an Interlock roof. I really want to like Interlock. It seems like a nice product. Unfortunately, the roof installation cut proverbial corners and getting service for the roof has been extremely difficult. For the sake of giving credit where due, their roofer that collaborated with our solar installer was competent. Sadly that is not universally the case. When we first moved in, one of the first things I noticed was that the metal roof installation, over an existing composite roof, makes the unfortunate assumption that the flashing under the old roof is in good shape and will continue to operate. As such on one section of roof that abuts the main house, the flashing was fastened to the side of the wood siding, allowing rain running down the side of the house to go behind the flashing down to, theoretically, the original roof and flashing. Another roof that abuts the main house was installed by Interlock without flashing by shoving it up under the wood siding. This has expedited wood rot of the siding and has not prevented water leaks that completely rotted a significant portion of the exterior wall of the main house. It is crazy to me that anyone would install a roof without ensuring it is flashed properly. Beyond that, trying to work with Interlock to collaborate with our solar installer was a very painful process. Due to Interlock not reading the solar installation plans or passing them along to their roofer, they were not prepared to help with the solar rail installation, leading the solar installer to have to eat the cost of a crew of 8 people that could not do the install as planned as the right roof flashing was not available. Thank goodness the Interlock roofer was willing to not proceed without the right flashing, but it would have been better had the right preparation been made. There is now a leak around the chimney of the house. I have been trying to schedule service with Interlock for over a month and a half. Their "system" has been down for over two months so they cannot find records regarding the roof on my house. They have also been unable to schedule me for service, consistently passing messages along to a local affiliate of some sort that keeps telling me that they can't schedule for service until their system comes back up. I hope I can eventually update this post with some good news, but as of right now I have a list of reasons you should avoid this company.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Newton Centre

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Newton Centre, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Newton Centre.

Will a metal roof handle Newton Centre's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes. Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature swings, but its oxide layer self-heals when scratched—corrosion never starts. Newton Centre experiences about 76 freeze-thaw days per year with average temperatures near 11°C. The 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) and dual-sided Alunar 70% PVDF coating (30-year warranty against chalking) are engineered for exactly this cycling. Steel roofs rust when that cycle breaks their protective barrier; aluminum cannot rust, regardless of how many times it freezes and thaws.

Does a metal roof handle Newton Centre's snow load and ice dams?

Metal roofing handles snow load exceptionally well because it weighs almost nothing—the Shingle profile installs at just 0.41 lb/sq ft, so your structure bears no additional strain even under Newton Centre's typical 84 cm of annual snow. The smooth, hard surface sheds snow and ice naturally without absorbing moisture. Four-way interlocking panels (ESR-1790 compliant) prevent water infiltration if ice dams form. Asphalt absorbs meltwater; aluminum sheds it. Adding snow guards is straightforward if you want to control edge shedding.

Why won't an aluminum metal roof rust in Newton Centre's climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—it forms a self-healing oxide layer instead. Newton Centre receives about 1065 mm of rain annually, exposing your roof to constant moisture. Steel roofs corrode in this environment; aluminum's oxide simply strengthens with age. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (applied to both sides of every panel) adds 30-year protection against chalking and fading—this extra coating layer is why coastal installations from salt-air homes to Antarctic research stations all use Interlock aluminum. You will never see rust stains on gutters or siding.

How does a metal roof perform in heavy rain like Newton Centre gets?

The four-way interlocking seams are the key. Newton Centre averages 1065 mm of rain annually, so leak protection must be reliable. Interlock panels lock on all four sides (ESR-1790 certified to IBC/IRC standards), creating a barrier water cannot penetrate. Installation over solid decking with underlayment makes the system as quiet and leak-proof as asphalt. The panels shed water instantly—aluminum's hardness prevents the saturation that degrades asphalt shingles. Over 25+ years, this means zero water damage, no attic rot, no mold remediation.

Can a metal roof withstand Newton Centre's winter gusts?

Yes, to 120 mph—that's the warranty wind speed. Newton Centre's typical gusts reach about 130 km/h (about 81 mph), with occasional higher peaks possible in winter storms. The four-way interlocking system (ESR-1790) distributes wind pressure across all panels, preventing lift-off that affects shingles with fewer connection points. Each panel locks to its neighbors, so the entire roof acts as one structural unit rather than thousands of independent shingles. Even at the upper end of regional wind events, this design keeps the roof secure without additional fastening costs.

Does metal roofing qualify for hail damage coverage or discounts in Massachusetts?

Check with your insurer—many do offer discounts. Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4, the highest impact rating available; the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Newton Centre's hail risk is moderate compared to western regions, but 0.5-inch hail is not uncommon in spring and summer. Class 4 impact resistance means your roof will not dent or perforate from typical hail, eliminating future claims. Your agent may see the UL 2218 Class 4 rating and reduce your premium; this conversation is worth having before installation.

Is a metal roof a better investment than asphalt over the long run?

Compare 30+ year costs, not first cost. Asphalt shingles fail in 15-20 years in Newton Centre's climate (1065 mm rain, 76 freeze-thaw days, frequent moisture cycling degrade asphalt rapidly). A metal roof carries a lifetime limited warranty for the original owner—that's the last roof you buy. Maintenance is minimal: no algae treatments, no moss removal, no deterioration. The Guardian Warranty is non-prorated and transferable (50 years to the next owner), which boosts resale value. Current promotion: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation. Over 40 years, factoring in one asphalt replacement, metal is cheaper and eliminates roofing hassle.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need?

Almost none. Newton Centre's 1065 mm annual rainfall cleans the surface naturally. Unlike asphalt, aluminum does not decay, split, curl, or host algae and moss—the Alunar 70% PVDF finish (30-year warranty) resists these problems. There is no tar degradation, no seasonal inspections, no sealing or re-coating cycles. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance requirements. Wood shakes require annual cleaning and treatment; tile cracks and stains; asphalt shingles develop leaks. Aluminum sheds water, reflects heat, and stays intact. Annual gutter cleaning is standard for any roof, but the roof itself demands virtually zero upkeep.

Can my Newton Centre home's structure support a metal roof without reinforcement?

Almost certainly yes, without any reinforcement. The Mediterranean Tile profile—the heaviest—weighs only 0.59 lb/sq ft, about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. The Shingle profile is just 0.41 lb/sq ft. Existing asphalt already loads your home; metal is a fraction of that weight. Interlock installs over existing roofs because the structure already handles the load. This is critical in New England, where many homes are older and not built for heavy tile or slate. You avoid costly structural upgrades, faster installation (no tear-off), and the profile you want—all without engineer approval or reinforcement.
