Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Inman Square, Massachusetts
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |

What our customers are saying:
These people exceeded all my expectations. Professional, timely, quality-oriented company and crew. Highest recommendation without any reservations.
I wanted to let you know how happy my wife and I are with our new Interlock roof and the quality of the installation work. The installers presented themselves in a very professional manner. They took great pride in their job and worked on our home as if it was their own. At the end of the day, they always cleaned up after themselves and never inconvenienced my family. They truly were a wonderful crew! The roof looks fantastic. It is much sharper and cleaner looking than our old roof. Since it was completed, we have had several hard rainstorms. The roof performed very well. One of our initial concerns was if rain hitting this new roof would be louder than our old. On those stormy nights, our fears were quickly put to rest. There was no difference in sound compared to our old roof. Then, the night before Thanksgiving, we had a snowstorm. Thanksgiving Day was nice and sunny, and our house was the only one with no snow on the roof. The Interlock roof is, by far, the best home improvement project I have undertaken; it is wonderful knowing I will never have to worry about my roof again. Thanks for the great product and service.
Thank you so much for meeting with us to arrange the purchase of a new roof by Interlock. It’s gorgeous! It is so comforting to know that our roof is now safe from leaks and ugliness. We had a few obvious leaks every time it rained or snowed, and that hasn’t happened since our new roof was completed. We have seen several people “looking” as they " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">walk or drive by, and several neighbors have made comments as to how great it looks. This was a job that we put off for years – and now we’re so glad that we have done it! What a great crew you had – they were polite – they did the work, and they cleaned up beautifully (even better than how they found it – to our pleasure). The roof was delivered as promised – on time! The crew worked long hours to get it completed, and although we had bad weather on a few of those days – the work was completed in a week! They never interfered with our own schedule and despite the hammering which comes with any job of this nature – we just knew they were getting the work done as expeditiously as possible – working until the available light made it unsafe to continue for the day. Thank you – Interlock is a great company with a product that is sure to give us many years of security, knowing that our roof will surely outlast us and that we don’t have to worry about any future roofing jobs. You were very accommodating and a pleasure to work with! It is great to know that we now have the “best roof” on the block – not the worst!
This is to give you feedback on our recent Interlock roof installation. The installation, including stripping the old roofing, went very well and cleaned up was as I had expected. This is an old house with dormers, and even since I have lived here (since 1956), it has had various leak problems that were never solved with new asphalt shingle jobs. Within a week of completion of the Interlock Roof, we had a heavy wet snowstorm and two days of wind-driven rains. Everything is dry. Also, we get lots of comments from passersby about how nice the roof looks. You can consider me satisfied.
Based on my original review below, Interlock reached out and was explicit about wanting to know what needed to be done to receive a better review. My experience with Interlock since that point has been excellent. First, the customer service person (Jen) became very responsive. The technician (who I had positive things to say about below) continued to be knowledgeable and focused on doing the job right. The technician applied new caulking around the chimney, alerted me to issues with the chimney cap (not in scope), and completely re-installed the flashing where our original house meets a lower roof (what was the issue resulting in significant exterior, structural wall damage). The technician explained that installation methods for the Interlock product have changed over the years and what was installed originally is no longer the way flashing is installed today. This latest set of interactions with Interlock gives me greater confidence that we would continue to use Interlock for any additions to the house needing roofing (e.g., a portico over the front door, an addition over the garage). If their current technician in the Boston area is an indication of current install quality, then you will have no issues or complaints about the product. I just feel badly for all the folks with older Interlock roofs, like me, where installation methods were unacceptable. Original Review: We bought a house with an Interlock roof. I really want to like Interlock. It seems like a nice product. Unfortunately, the roof installation cut proverbial corners and getting service for the roof has been extremely difficult. For the sake of giving credit where due, their roofer that collaborated with our solar installer was competent. Sadly that is not universally the case. When we first moved in, one of the first things I noticed was that the metal roof installation, over an existing composite roof, makes the unfortunate assumption that the flashing under the old roof is in good shape and will continue to operate. As such on one section of roof that abuts the main house, the flashing was fastened to the side of the wood siding, allowing rain running down the side of the house to go behind the flashing down to, theoretically, the original roof and flashing. Another roof that abuts the main house was installed by Interlock without flashing by shoving it up under the wood siding. This has expedited wood rot of the siding and has not prevented water leaks that completely rotted a significant portion of the exterior wall of the main house. It is crazy to me that anyone would install a roof without ensuring it is flashed properly. Beyond that, trying to work with Interlock to collaborate with our solar installer was a very painful process. Due to Interlock not reading the solar installation plans or passing them along to their roofer, they were not prepared to help with the solar rail installation, leading the solar installer to have to eat the cost of a crew of 8 people that could not do the install as planned as the right roof flashing was not available. Thank goodness the Interlock roofer was willing to not proceed without the right flashing, but it would have been better had the right preparation been made. There is now a leak around the chimney of the house. I have been trying to schedule service with Interlock for over a month and a half. Their "system" has been down for over two months so they cannot find records regarding the roof on my house. They have also been unable to schedule me for service, consistently passing messages along to a local affiliate of some sort that keeps telling me that they can't schedule for service until their system comes back up. I hope I can eventually update this post with some good news, but as of right now I have a list of reasons you should avoid this company.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Inman Square
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Inman Square, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Inman Square.
How does a metal roof handle the snow and ice we get in Massachusetts winters?
Inman Square averages about 84 cm of snow annually, and metal roofing's smooth, hard surface naturally sheds snow and ice far better than asphalt. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels create a unified surface that prevents ice dam formation—the main culprit in winter water damage. Snow guards are available if you want to manage snow sliding, and the aluminum's flexibility actually outperforms brittle asphalt when freeze-thaw cycles hit (the region experiences roughly 76 such cycles per year). Your attic stays warmer, your gutters stay clear, and you avoid the costly water intrusion that typical shingles invite during New England winters.
Will freeze-thaw cycling damage a metal roof over time?
No—aluminum thrives through freeze-thaw because it expands and contracts uniformly without cracking, splintering, or curling like asphalt or wood. With about 76 freeze-thaw days per year in Inman Square, this is genuinely important. The material's elasticity allows it to move safely through temperature swings; the Alunar 70% PVDF coating won't peel or chalk (warranted 30 years). Asphalt becomes brittle in cold and soft in thaw, which is why it typically fails in 15–20 years in climates like yours. Aluminum simply gets more durable as it cycles through New England winters.
Does a metal roof really shed 1000+ mm of annual rainfall without leaks?
Inman Square receives approximately 1065 mm of rain each year, making reliable water shedding essential. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels overlap like roof shingles and route water downward instantly—there's no pooling, no seepage paths. Combined with a solid substrate and underlayment (which your installer will install per the ESR-1790 building code), the system meets ICC-ES and IRC standards. Aluminum won't rot, warp, or develop the soft spots that asphalt develops after repeated soaking. When installed by a trained technician, metal roofing actually reduces leak callbacks compared to traditional shingles.
Can a metal roof withstand Massachusetts nor'easters and wind gusts?
Yes. Inman Square experiences typical gusts reaching 130 km/h (about 81 mph), and Interlock's warranty covers wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking panel design—where each panel grips its four neighbors—distributes wind load across the entire roof rather than allowing uplift at fasteners. The Guardian Warranty backs this performance in writing. Unlike asphalt, which can lose shingles in moderate gusts, aluminum panels remain permanently locked. For nor'easters and spring squalls, this design provides genuine peace of mind that your roof will stay in place.
What's the hail rating on metal roofing, and can I get an insurance discount?
Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4—the highest impact rating available—and the warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. This is the gold standard for hail resistance. Many insurance underwriters offer 10–15% discounts on premiums for Class 4 roofing because claims are so rare. Your agent should ask specifically about impact-rated metal roof credits. Given that hail events are unpredictable but increasingly severe, owning a roof that won't dent or perforate often translates into lower long-term insurance costs and genuine protection during a major storm.
Does aluminum roofing need expensive structural reinforcement?
No reinforcement needed. Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only ~0.59 lb/sq ft—about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so it installs over nearly all existing roof structures without any upgrade. Even the heavier Shake profile (0.58 lb/sq ft) is a fraction of traditional tile weight. Your roof framing was built decades ago to carry asphalt shingles; aluminum is even lighter. This means you avoid the $5,000–$15,000+ structural reinforcement costs that tile or slate demands. You simply install and go. For Inman Square homeowners wanting premium aesthetics without engineering, this is a genuine money saver.
Why doesn't aluminum rust like steel roofing does?
Aluminum contains no iron, so rusting—the chemical oxidation of iron—is chemically impossible. Instead, aluminum develops a paper-thin, transparent oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath. Remarkably, if this layer is scratched, it self-heals when exposed to air. Steel roofing, by contrast, requires constant coating maintenance because bare steel oxidizes into rust within weeks. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum (ASTM B209) with Alunar 70% PVDF coating on both sides, providing a 30-year warranty against coating failure. In New England's moisture-rich climate with 1065 mm annual rain, this corrosion immunity is worth its weight in savings over a lifetime roof.
Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?
Yes, over the roof's life. Asphalt costs less upfront but lasts 15–20 years in a climate like Inman Square's (76 freeze-thaw cycles, 84 cm snow, 1065 mm rain annually). You'll replace it 2–3 times in 50 years. Metal costs more initially but lasts 50+ years, carries a lifetime limited warranty for the original owner and 50-year transfer coverage for the next, and needs no tear-off disposal. You'll finance zero replacements. Add no maintenance costs, no algae treatment, no storm repairs, and often a 10–15% insurance discount on hail-rated metal. The current promotion—no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off—makes now an ideal time to run the real numbers with your installer.
What exactly does the Guardian Warranty cover, and for how long?
The Guardian is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original homeowner covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's fully transferable once to the next owner, who receives 50 years of coverage from completion. Non-prorated means you don't get a smaller claim as years pass; any defect is covered the same way today or 30 years from now. This addresses every failure mode that stops other roofs cold. For Inman Square buyers, it means your investment is protected through freeze-thaw swings, heavy snow loads, and hail—and your home's resale value includes a 50-year warranty you can hand to the buyer.
Is metal roofing actually better for the environment than asphalt?
Yes. Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life—no landfill burden ever. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, are non-recyclable and account for millions of tons of landfill waste annually. Because metal lasts 50+ years instead of 15–20, you replace it once or never during your ownership, eliminating the tear-off trucks, dump fees, and haul-away emissions. The aluminum itself is sourced under strict sustainability standards and manufactured since 1998 in Delta, BC. In Inman Square—where 3109 annual sunshine hours could power a reflective, long-life roof that moves you away from repeated petroleum-based replacement cycles—metal roofing aligns your home with genuine environmental stewardship.
