Review: November 28, 2002 Completion: November 27, 2002

I wanted to let you know how happy my wife and I are with our new Interlock roof and the quality of the installation work. The installers presented themselves in a very professional manner. They took great pride in their job and worked on our home as if it was their own. At the end of the day, they always cleaned up after themselves and never inconvenienced my family. They truly were a wonderful crew! The roof looks fantastic. It is much sharper and cleaner looking than our old roof. Since it was completed, we have had several hard rainstorms. The roof performed very well. One of our initial concerns was if rain hitting this new roof would be louder than our old. On those stormy nights, our fears were quickly put to rest. There was no difference in sound compared to our old roof. Then, the night before Thanksgiving, we had a snowstorm. Thanksgiving Day was nice and sunny, and our house was the only one with no snow on the roof. The Interlock roof is, by far, the best home improvement project I have undertaken; it is wonderful knowing I will never have to worry about my roof again. Thanks for the great product and service.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in East Somerville

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in East Somerville, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in East Somerville.

Will a metal roof handle East Somerville's snow and ice buildup?

Yes—aluminum's smooth, interlocking surface actually sheds snow more effectively than asphalt. With about 84 cm of snow annually and roughly 76 freeze–thaw cycles per year in this region, a metal roof's slippery profile prevents the ice dams that trap moisture and cause leaks in traditional roofing. The four-way interlocking panels lock panels together to resist wind gusts up to 130 km/h that often accompany nor'easters, and the warranty covers wind speeds to 120 mph when installed to spec. Snow guards are available if you prefer controlled melting.

Does aluminum roofing crack or fail during freeze-thaw cycles?

No. Aluminum's crystalline structure simply expands and contracts with temperature swings—it doesn't absorb moisture, split, or degrade the way asphalt, wood, or concrete tile do. East Somerville experiences about 76 freeze–thaw days yearly, a genuine test for roofing materials. Aluminum contains no iron, so its oxide layer self-heals when scratched, and the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading even under these repeated cycles. Your roof remains intact while others weaken.

How does a metal roof handle heavy rainfall without leaking?

The four-way interlocking aluminum panels create a mechanical seal—water cannot penetrate the overlaps themselves. With about 1065 mm of rain falling annually across East Somerville, the smooth aluminum surface accelerates runoff and prevents pooling. Installation over solid deck and underlayment (the same substrate used under asphalt) ensures water that does get beneath the panels drains safely. The ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation confirms this design meets IBC/IRC water-resistance standards. Combined with proper flashing at valleys and penetrations, this system has proven dry in thousands of New England installations since 1999.

Can hail damage a metal roof, and will my homeowner's insurance notice?

Interlock metal roofing achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—meaning it resists hailstones up to 1.5 inches without perforation or loss of water-shedding ability. This durability may qualify you for insurance premium discounts (speak with your agent). East Somerville's average storm season brings wind gusts to 130 km/h, and the four-way interlocking design ensures panels stay locked even under severe impact. The Guardian warranty covers perforation from qualifying hail events. Unlike asphalt shingles that dent and degrade after hail, aluminum maintains its integrity and appearance.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed. The Slate profile installs at just 0.41 lb per square foot—so light that most homes can accept it over an existing asphalt roof without modification. If you choose the Mediterranean Tile profile, it weighs only about 0.59 lb per square foot, making it roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This means you avoid the expense of structural upgrades while gaining the aesthetic you want. Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has assessed thousands of East Somerville roofs since 1999 and can confirm whether your framing accepts the weight at your first consultation.

Is metal roofing really the last roof I'll buy, and does it justify the cost?

Metal roofing outlasts asphalt by decades: the Guardian warranty provides lifetime limited coverage for the original owner (non-prorated material), then transfers once to the next owner for 50 years from completion. Over a 50-year horizon in East Somerville's wet climate with 1065 mm annual rainfall and 76 freeze–thaw days, you'll replace asphalt twice—removing and landfilling old shingles each time—while your aluminum roof remains intact and recyclable. Current financing offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation. The total cost of ownership, factoring in replacement cycles, favors metal decisively.

Does a metal roof help lower cooling costs in summer?

Yes, if you choose an energy-efficient color. Interlock's reflective finishes achieve initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny) and thermal emissivity of 0.84, meaning they bounce solar heat back rather than absorb it the way dark asphalt does. With about 3109 sunshine hours annually across East Somerville, summer cooling load reductions are measurable. The Cool Roof Rating Council has validated these properties. While New England's winters are long, reflective metal roofing still reduces peak summer air-conditioning demand—especially on south and west-facing slopes—and the smooth aluminum doesn't trap heat or require the dark, heat-absorbing colors that asphalt often demands for aesthetic reasons.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really need?

Virtually none. Unlike asphalt shingles that deteriorate in East Somerville's 76 annual freeze–thaw cycles, wood shake that splits and curls, or tile that cracks, aluminum simply sheds debris and weathers predictably. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading—it doesn't require resealing or repainting. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance needs. Gutters collect normal leaf debris as they do with any roof. You'll save thousands in repairs, sealant reapplication, and emergency leak fixes over the roof's life. After 25+ years, asphalt requires constant patching; your Interlock roof still sheds snow and rain without intervention.

Can a metal roof be installed over my existing asphalt shingles, and how long does installation take?

Yes. Because the Slate profile weighs just 0.41 lb per square foot and other profiles similarly light, installation over an existing roof is usually possible—avoiding the cost and landfill impact of tearing off old shingles. Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. will assess your roof's condition and deck integrity during a consultation. Installation typically proceeds faster than asphalt roofing because panels cover larger area per piece and the four-way interlocking system locks panels together without individual fastening of every overlap. Most residential roofs in East Somerville complete within 3–5 working days depending on complexity and weather. The smooth aluminum surface means crews can work safely even during spring thaw when asphalt becomes treacherous.

Is a metal roof considered fire-resistant for insurance purposes?

Aluminum roofing is non-combustible and available in Class A fire classification—the highest fire rating. This can reduce homeowner's insurance premiums and meets stringent building codes. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790, reissued 2025, confirms compliance with IBC/IRC fire safety standards. East Somerville building officials recognize this rating. Because aluminum cannot ignite and the panels are four-way interlocked with no gaps for ember penetration, your home gains genuine fire protection that asphalt shingles (Class C) cannot match. If wildfire risk or neighborhood fire history concerns you, or if your insurance company offers credits for Class A roofing, metal becomes both a safety and financial advantage.
