Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Alewife, Massachusetts
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |

What our customers are saying:
Thank you so much for meeting with us to arrange the purchase of a new roof by Interlock. It’s gorgeous! It is so comforting to know that our roof is now safe from leaks and ugliness. We had a few obvious leaks every time it rained or snowed, and that hasn’t happened since our new roof was completed. We have seen several people “looking” as they " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">walk or drive by, and several neighbors have made comments as to how great it looks. This was a job that we put off for years – and now we’re so glad that we have done it! What a great crew you had – they were polite – they did the work, and they cleaned up beautifully (even better than how they found it – to our pleasure). The roof was delivered as promised – on time! The crew worked long hours to get it completed, and although we had bad weather on a few of those days – the work was completed in a week! They never interfered with our own schedule and despite the hammering which comes with any job of this nature – we just knew they were getting the work done as expeditiously as possible – working until the available light made it unsafe to continue for the day. Thank you – Interlock is a great company with a product that is sure to give us many years of security, knowing that our roof will surely outlast us and that we don’t have to worry about any future roofing jobs. You were very accommodating and a pleasure to work with! It is great to know that we now have the “best roof” on the block – not the worst!
This is to give you feedback on our recent Interlock roof installation. The installation, including stripping the old roofing, went very well and cleaned up was as I had expected. This is an old house with dormers, and even since I have lived here (since 1956), it has had various leak problems that were never solved with new asphalt shingle jobs. Within a week of completion of the Interlock Roof, we had a heavy wet snowstorm and two days of wind-driven rains. Everything is dry. Also, we get lots of comments from passersby about how nice the roof looks. You can consider me satisfied.
Based on my original review below, Interlock reached out and was explicit about wanting to know what needed to be done to receive a better review. My experience with Interlock since that point has been excellent. First, the customer service person (Jen) became very responsive. The technician (who I had positive things to say about below) continued to be knowledgeable and focused on doing the job right. The technician applied new caulking around the chimney, alerted me to issues with the chimney cap (not in scope), and completely re-installed the flashing where our original house meets a lower roof (what was the issue resulting in significant exterior, structural wall damage). The technician explained that installation methods for the Interlock product have changed over the years and what was installed originally is no longer the way flashing is installed today. This latest set of interactions with Interlock gives me greater confidence that we would continue to use Interlock for any additions to the house needing roofing (e.g., a portico over the front door, an addition over the garage). If their current technician in the Boston area is an indication of current install quality, then you will have no issues or complaints about the product. I just feel badly for all the folks with older Interlock roofs, like me, where installation methods were unacceptable. Original Review: We bought a house with an Interlock roof. I really want to like Interlock. It seems like a nice product. Unfortunately, the roof installation cut proverbial corners and getting service for the roof has been extremely difficult. For the sake of giving credit where due, their roofer that collaborated with our solar installer was competent. Sadly that is not universally the case. When we first moved in, one of the first things I noticed was that the metal roof installation, over an existing composite roof, makes the unfortunate assumption that the flashing under the old roof is in good shape and will continue to operate. As such on one section of roof that abuts the main house, the flashing was fastened to the side of the wood siding, allowing rain running down the side of the house to go behind the flashing down to, theoretically, the original roof and flashing. Another roof that abuts the main house was installed by Interlock without flashing by shoving it up under the wood siding. This has expedited wood rot of the siding and has not prevented water leaks that completely rotted a significant portion of the exterior wall of the main house. It is crazy to me that anyone would install a roof without ensuring it is flashed properly. Beyond that, trying to work with Interlock to collaborate with our solar installer was a very painful process. Due to Interlock not reading the solar installation plans or passing them along to their roofer, they were not prepared to help with the solar rail installation, leading the solar installer to have to eat the cost of a crew of 8 people that could not do the install as planned as the right roof flashing was not available. Thank goodness the Interlock roofer was willing to not proceed without the right flashing, but it would have been better had the right preparation been made. There is now a leak around the chimney of the house. I have been trying to schedule service with Interlock for over a month and a half. Their "system" has been down for over two months so they cannot find records regarding the roof on my house. They have also been unable to schedule me for service, consistently passing messages along to a local affiliate of some sort that keeps telling me that they can't schedule for service until their system comes back up. I hope I can eventually update this post with some good news, but as of right now I have a list of reasons you should avoid this company.
It was really hard to communicate with the crew because they spoke Spanish and it was hard to coordinate with them.
They could've improved on cleanliness and care on the jobsite during the job. They did great cleaning afterwards.
Please check your records I believe my brothersr roof was done around 13 to 15 years the go Respectfully Elias G. Noukas9 Wolcott ParkMedford, Mass . 02155
These people exceeded all my expectations. Professional, timely, quality-oriented company and crew. Highest recommendation without any reservations.
They need to be aware that they have to take responsibility for the customers home and belongings. They could have improved on their customer service and they could have come more prepared. They kept calling wanting to start the project over and over but I could not let them start until my chimneys were done. They need to be prepared when they come to do a job.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Alewife
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Alewife, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Alewife.
Will a metal roof handle Massachusetts freeze-thaw cycles without degrading?
Aluminum roofing thrives in freeze-thaw climates because the material itself doesn't absorb water or expand when frozen. Alewife sees about 76 freeze-thaw days per year, which is exactly where asphalt shingles crack and curl. Aluminum's 3105-H24 alloy has zero iron content, so it won't rust even when moisture gets into seams or fasteners. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating (warranted 30 years) protects the oxide layer, which self-heals when scratched. That's why Interlock has installed from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctica—the material doesn't degrade in temperature swings.
How does a metal roof handle Alewife's snow load and ice dams?
Metal roofing sheds snow and ice faster than asphalt because the smooth, hard surface won't hold water the way granules and tar do. Alewife gets about 84 cm of snow annually, and that accumulation melts more predictably on aluminum, reducing ice dam formation at the gutters. The four-way interlocking system (ESR-1790 certified for IBC/IRC) locks each panel so snow sliding off won't lift edges or separate seams. You can install snow guards if desired, but the material itself won't warp, absorb melt, or deteriorate under the freeze cycle. The warranty covers the entire roof life, so no surprise failure after a heavy season.
With 1,000+ mm of rain a year, does a metal roof stay dry inside?
Yes. Alewife's average 1,065 mm annual rainfall means your roof must shed water reliably—metal roofing's four-way interlocking panels are engineered for exactly that. Each panel locks to its neighbors, and water runs down the profile channels into the gutter system; there's no wood substrate to absorb moisture like asphalt shingles allow over time. When installed to Interlock's specification over a solid deck and underlayment, the roof performs identically to asphalt in sound testing—all the bang-and-splash is muffled. The coating (Alunar, applied to both sides) and interlocking geometry keep water out. Homeowners in this rainfall zone who've upgraded report zero leaks.
Can a metal roof withstand Alewife's wind gusts without blowing off?
Interlock Metal Roofing's four-way interlocking system is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Alewife's typical daily-max winds are about 22 km/h with gusts reaching 130 km/h—well below that threshold. The interlocking geometry means each panel is mechanically locked to its neighbors on all four sides, so individual panels can't lift or separate in a gust. That's why ESR-1790 (the ICC evaluation reissued 2025) certifies the system for residential construction in high-wind zones. Steel roofs rely on fasteners alone and can fail if fasteners corrode; aluminum has no rust risk, so the connection integrity holds for the lifetime of the roof.
Does hail damage void the warranty, and can I get insurance discounts?
No damage, no void. Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. That rating often qualifies homeowners for discounts from insurers because claim rates for Class 4 roofing are demonstrably lower. Many carriers will reduce your premium if you submit the UL 2218 certification; ask your agent. In hail-prone years, that can mean hundreds of dollars back annually. Combined with the roof's 70+ year lifespan (lifetime for the original owner, 50 years transferable), you're protected against both impact damage and the cost erosion that drives repeated claims.
Why can't aluminum roofing rust the way steel roofs do?
Aluminum contains no iron—iron is what oxidizes and becomes rust. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), which forms a thin, self-healing oxide layer on its surface. When scratched or exposed during installation, that layer reforms naturally without intervention. Steel roofing relies on paint coatings to prevent rust, and in Alewife's 1,065 mm annual rainfall and 130 km/h wind gusts, those coatings eventually crack and peel. Once rust starts, it consumes the material from inside out. Aluminum simply doesn't fail that way. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (applied to both sides for extra protection) adds 30-year coating durability, but the core material is immune to rust—it's why Interlock panels have been installed since 1998 in salt-air environments worldwide.
Do I need to reinforce my roof framing for a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement needed. Interlock's Slate profile installs at about 0.41 lb/sq ft and the Tile profile at roughly 0.59 lb/sq ft—each is about 96% lighter than the concrete or clay tile it mimics. Your existing roof framing was built to carry asphalt shingles, which typically weigh 2–3 pounds per square foot; metal roofing is a fraction of that load. You can install metal panels directly over most existing asphalt roofs, saving tear-off labor and landfill cost. Alewife's building department has approved Interlock under ESR-1790, which covers installation over existing wood or asphalt decks without reinforcement. The weight savings also means easier, faster installation—fewer crew days on your home.
How much maintenance does a metal roof really need compared to asphalt?
Metal roofing is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance—meaning you won't be patching, caulking, or replacing individual panels like you would asphalt shingles. Asphalt roofs require annual inspections, gutter clearing, and flashing repairs; by year 10–15 you're dealing with leaks. Metal roofing in Alewife's 1,065 mm rainfall and 76 freeze-thaw cycles simply sheds water and ice without absorbing it or degrading. Alunar's 30-year coating warranty (measured to ASTM D4214 and D2244 standards) means no chalking or fading. Your only routine maintenance is annual gutter cleaning and occasional leaf debris removal—tasks you'd do anyway. Over 70 years, you'll spend a fraction what asphalt demands in repairs, sealing, and eventual tear-off.
Will an energy-efficiency metal roof actually lower my cooling costs in summer?
energy-efficient Interlock colors achieve up to 0.55 initial solar reflectance (Aged Copper Penny) and 0.84 thermal emissivity, meaning they reflect heat that dark asphalt absorbs and re-radiates into your home. Alewife gets about 3,109 sunshine hours per year—plenty of solar load in summer. Cool Roof Rating Council testing shows these colors reduce surface temperature by 20–40°F compared to standard asphalt, which lowers the heat conducted through your attic and into living spaces. That translates to reduced air-conditioning runtime and lower utility bills. The savings compound across a 70-year lifespan. If you're in a hot-summer zone, energy-efficiency certification alone can recover 10–20% of your cooling costs annually; in Alewife's temperate climate, expect moderate but real savings, especially in July and August.
