Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for West Cambridge, Massachusetts
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
Based on my original review below, Interlock reached out and was explicit about wanting to know what needed to be done to receive a better review. My experience with Interlock since that point has been excellent. First, the customer service person (Jen) became very responsive. The technician (who I had positive things to say about below) continued to be knowledgeable and focused on doing the job right. The technician applied new caulking around the chimney, alerted me to issues with the chimney cap (not in scope), and completely re-installed the flashing where our original house meets a lower roof (what was the issue resulting in significant exterior, structural wall damage). The technician explained that installation methods for the Interlock product have changed over the years and what was installed originally is no longer the way flashing is installed today. This latest set of interactions with Interlock gives me greater confidence that we would continue to use Interlock for any additions to the house needing roofing (e.g., a portico over the front door, an addition over the garage). If their current technician in the Boston area is an indication of current install quality, then you will have no issues or complaints about the product. I just feel badly for all the folks with older Interlock roofs, like me, where installation methods were unacceptable. Original Review: We bought a house with an Interlock roof. I really want to like Interlock. It seems like a nice product. Unfortunately, the roof installation cut proverbial corners and getting service for the roof has been extremely difficult. For the sake of giving credit where due, their roofer that collaborated with our solar installer was competent. Sadly that is not universally the case. When we first moved in, one of the first things I noticed was that the metal roof installation, over an existing composite roof, makes the unfortunate assumption that the flashing under the old roof is in good shape and will continue to operate. As such on one section of roof that abuts the main house, the flashing was fastened to the side of the wood siding, allowing rain running down the side of the house to go behind the flashing down to, theoretically, the original roof and flashing. Another roof that abuts the main house was installed by Interlock without flashing by shoving it up under the wood siding. This has expedited wood rot of the siding and has not prevented water leaks that completely rotted a significant portion of the exterior wall of the main house. It is crazy to me that anyone would install a roof without ensuring it is flashed properly. Beyond that, trying to work with Interlock to collaborate with our solar installer was a very painful process. Due to Interlock not reading the solar installation plans or passing them along to their roofer, they were not prepared to help with the solar rail installation, leading the solar installer to have to eat the cost of a crew of 8 people that could not do the install as planned as the right roof flashing was not available. Thank goodness the Interlock roofer was willing to not proceed without the right flashing, but it would have been better had the right preparation been made. There is now a leak around the chimney of the house. I have been trying to schedule service with Interlock for over a month and a half. Their "system" has been down for over two months so they cannot find records regarding the roof on my house. They have also been unable to schedule me for service, consistently passing messages along to a local affiliate of some sort that keeps telling me that they can't schedule for service until their system comes back up. I hope I can eventually update this post with some good news, but as of right now I have a list of reasons you should avoid this company.
Thank you so much for meeting with us to arrange the purchase of a new roof by Interlock. It’s gorgeous! It is so comforting to know that our roof is now safe from leaks and ugliness. We had a few obvious leaks every time it rained or snowed, and that hasn’t happened since our new roof was completed. We have seen several people “looking” as they " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">walk or drive by, and several neighbors have made comments as to how great it looks. This was a job that we put off for years – and now we’re so glad that we have done it! What a great crew you had – they were polite – they did the work, and they cleaned up beautifully (even better than how they found it – to our pleasure). The roof was delivered as promised – on time! The crew worked long hours to get it completed, and although we had bad weather on a few of those days – the work was completed in a week! They never interfered with our own schedule and despite the hammering which comes with any job of this nature – we just knew they were getting the work done as expeditiously as possible – working until the available light made it unsafe to continue for the day. Thank you – Interlock is a great company with a product that is sure to give us many years of security, knowing that our roof will surely outlast us and that we don’t have to worry about any future roofing jobs. You were very accommodating and a pleasure to work with! It is great to know that we now have the “best roof” on the block – not the worst!
This is to give you feedback on our recent Interlock roof installation. The installation, including stripping the old roofing, went very well and cleaned up was as I had expected. This is an old house with dormers, and even since I have lived here (since 1956), it has had various leak problems that were never solved with new asphalt shingle jobs. Within a week of completion of the Interlock Roof, we had a heavy wet snowstorm and two days of wind-driven rains. Everything is dry. Also, we get lots of comments from passersby about how nice the roof looks. You can consider me satisfied.
These people exceeded all my expectations. Professional, timely, quality-oriented company and crew. Highest recommendation without any reservations.
I wanted to let you know how happy my wife and I are with our new Interlock roof and the quality of the installation work. The installers presented themselves in a very professional manner. They took great pride in their job and worked on our home as if it was their own. At the end of the day, they always cleaned up after themselves and never inconvenienced my family. They truly were a wonderful crew! The roof looks fantastic. It is much sharper and cleaner looking than our old roof. Since it was completed, we have had several hard rainstorms. The roof performed very well. One of our initial concerns was if rain hitting this new roof would be louder than our old. On those stormy nights, our fears were quickly put to rest. There was no difference in sound compared to our old roof. Then, the night before Thanksgiving, we had a snowstorm. Thanksgiving Day was nice and sunny, and our house was the only one with no snow on the roof. The Interlock roof is, by far, the best home improvement project I have undertaken; it is wonderful knowing I will never have to worry about my roof again. Thanks for the great product and service.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in West Cambridge
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in West Cambridge, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in West Cambridge.
Will a metal roof hold up to Massachusetts winters with all the freeze-thaw cycles?
Yes—aluminum actually thrives through freeze-thaw cycling because it expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or splitting. West Cambridge experiences about 76 freeze-thaw days annually, and roofing-grade 3105-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209) is engineered to handle exactly this stress. Unlike asphalt shingles that become brittle in cold and crack as they warm, or wood that rots from repeated moisture infiltration, aluminum's oxide layer remains stable. The four-way interlocking panel design accommodates movement while maintaining watertight seals, so your roof won't develop the weak points that plague traditional materials after decades of New England winters.
How does a metal roof perform under West Cambridge's snow load?
Metal roofing sheds snow efficiently because its smooth surface offers less friction than asphalt—snow slides cleanly rather than bridging into ice dams. West Cambridge receives roughly 84 centimeters of snow annually across a climate that averages 11°C year-round, creating ideal conditions for the snow-shedding advantage of metal. Because Interlock panels weigh only 0.41 lb/sq ft (Slate profile), your existing roof structure can usually support them without reinforcement, and the light load means faster snow release rather than the dangerous accumulation you'd see under heavier tile or slate. Snow guards are available if you want to control slide direction, but the material itself won't trap ice the way shingles do.
Why won't a metal roof rust in a wet climate like Massachusetts?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—instead, it forms a self-healing oxide layer that protects against corrosion. This matters in Massachusetts because your region receives about 1065 millimeters of rain annually plus salt-laden air from coastal weather systems, conditions that corrode steel roofing within 10-15 years. Interlock panels are manufactured from roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy and coated with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. Even if the coating is scratched, the aluminum itself continues resisting moisture. This is why Interlock roofs have been installed from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctic research stations without rust failure.
Does heavy rainfall cause leaks in metal roofing?
No—heavy rainfall is actually where metal roofing excels because the four-way interlocking panels and smooth surface shed water faster than any shingle material. West Cambridge averages about 1065 millimeters of rain annually, and the panel overlap design means water cannot back up under shingles the way it does with asphalt. When installed over a solid deck with ICC-ES compliant underlayment (per ESR-1790), the system becomes a sealed envelope. The seams are mechanically locked, not glued, so they don't degrade in wet climates. Wood-based roofing materials absorb moisture and develop rot; metal simply directs water away. Your real leak risk comes during installation—which is why using a certified local installer matters.
Can metal roofing survive New England wind gusts?
Yes—Interlock panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification, and West Cambridge's typical wind gusts reach only about 130 km/h (roughly 80 mph), well within that rating. The four-way interlocking design mechanically locks each panel to its neighbors, distributing wind load across the entire roof rather than allowing individual panels to lift. This matters because New England's nor'easters and seasonal storms bring strong gusts, but your Interlock roof won't see the panel flutter or lifting that compromises asphalt shingles. The warranty even protects you during installation—the panels themselves resist wind failure as long as fasteners and decking meet code (ESR-1790 specifies all requirements).
Does a metal roof reduce hail damage and insurance costs?
Metal roofing receives a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and Interlock's warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 rating means the roof withstands repeated impacts that would shatter asphalt shingles or crack concrete tile. Many homeowners report insurance premium reductions after installing metal roofing rated for impact, because underwriters recognize the lower claim risk. In Massachusetts, hail seasons are less severe than in the Midwest, but spring and summer storms still produce impacts that accumulate damage on traditional roofing over years. A single metal roof rated Class 4 eliminates that damage category entirely, which is why insurance companies often incentivize the switch.
Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to replacing asphalt shingles?
Metal roofing costs more initially, but spreads that cost across a 50+ year lifespan instead of the 15-25 years you get from asphalt. Asphalt requires complete replacement every 1.5-2 decades—material, labor, and hauling fees repeat—while Interlock's lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner) covers the major failure modes asphalt can't prevent: splitting, cracking, curling, and impact loss. Over 50 years, you're buying one metal roof instead of 2-3 asphalt roofs. The transferable warranty (50 years from completion for the next owner) also protects resale value. Current financing—no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off installation—means you can offset the initial difference immediately, making the true cost per year far lower than traditional shingles.
What does Interlock's warranty actually cover and how long does it last?
The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance—basically every failure mode that ends a roof's life. For the second owner, the warranty transfers once and extends 50 years from completion date. Non-prorated means Interlock covers the full cost of failed materials, not a percentage that decreases year by year. This is possible because aluminum doesn't rust, the coating is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214/D2244 measured), and the design eliminates the rot and splitting that plague wood-based roofing. You're not buying a roof that might last 30 years; you're buying one with zero material failure risk for life, then transferring that security to the next owner.
Will a metal roof actually reduce cooling costs in summer?
Yes—energy-efficient Interlock colors achieve thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny), meaning they reflect heat that asphalt absorbs and re-radiates into your home. West Cambridge receives about 3109 sunshine hours annually across a temperate climate averaging 11°C year-round, so summer cooling benefits compound over months. Dark asphalt absorbs infrared radiation and heats your attic to 160°F+ on sunny days; reflective metal roofs stay 20-40°F cooler. Cool Roof Rating Council certification confirms the reflectance values under real-world aging. The energy savings depend on your cooling system and attic insulation, but homeowners commonly report 15-25% summer cooling reductions. In New England's moderate summers, the benefit is smaller than in the South, but paired with winter durability, you get year-round performance from one material.
Who installs Interlock Metal Roofing in West Cambridge and do they know local codes?
Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. serves West Cambridge and the surrounding Middlesex County region with 25+ years of experience (operating since 1999). As a regional installer, they understand Massachusetts building codes, the freeze-thaw and snow-load demands of New England winters, and the moisture challenges of 1065 mm annual rainfall. They're familiar with Middlesex County permitting timelines and local inspector expectations for ICC-ES compliant installation (ESR-1790). Local installation matters because proper deck preparation, underlayment selection, fastener spacing, and flashing detail determine whether your 50-year warranty delivers on its promises. A installer who has completed hundreds of roofs in your climate knows which profiles perform best under your specific snow and wind patterns, and can offer warranty support without shipping panels across the country.
