Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Newton Highlands, Massachusetts
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
We recently had a metal shingle roof installed by Interlock Roofing from Waltham, MA. The company coordinated the delivery of materials and dumpster pick-up. The work crew treated our home and belongings with consideration and respect. I happened to come home while one gentleman cleared the furniture and plants (there were many) from the deck. He moved our tomato plants one at a time as though they were very valuable to him. They worked very hard at our home for four days, two of which were twelve-hour days for them. This was the direct result of the work ethic of Baha, the crew chief. He was fabulous. They worked Saturday and Sunday, which happened to be Father’s Day, in the rain to finish our roof in the time frame they initially told us. He checked in with us frequently for feedback, and we developed quite a rapport. He is a master craftsman. There is no other way to describe the quality of his work. He was concerned that every shingle is the best. He hand-shaped many of them, and it shows. He improved the original plan for the placement of snow guards. The roof is extremely well done, and we are proud of it and the people who did it. We expected our yard to be a mess when the roof was finished. There was no mess. None of our perennials were damaged, and we have several next to the house. One man used a magnet to pick up the nails on the ground from removing the old roof. Baha even had one of his men push the materials in the dumpster down so that it would look as nice as possible for the twelve hours it sat full in our yard.
Based on my original review below, Interlock reached out and was explicit about wanting to know what needed to be done to receive a better review. My experience with Interlock since that point has been excellent. First, the customer service person (Jen) became very responsive. The technician (who I had positive things to say about below) continued to be knowledgeable and focused on doing the job right. The technician applied new caulking around the chimney, alerted me to issues with the chimney cap (not in scope), and completely re-installed the flashing where our original house meets a lower roof (what was the issue resulting in significant exterior, structural wall damage). The technician explained that installation methods for the Interlock product have changed over the years and what was installed originally is no longer the way flashing is installed today. This latest set of interactions with Interlock gives me greater confidence that we would continue to use Interlock for any additions to the house needing roofing (e.g., a portico over the front door, an addition over the garage). If their current technician in the Boston area is an indication of current install quality, then you will have no issues or complaints about the product. I just feel badly for all the folks with older Interlock roofs, like me, where installation methods were unacceptable. Original Review: We bought a house with an Interlock roof. I really want to like Interlock. It seems like a nice product. Unfortunately, the roof installation cut proverbial corners and getting service for the roof has been extremely difficult. For the sake of giving credit where due, their roofer that collaborated with our solar installer was competent. Sadly that is not universally the case. When we first moved in, one of the first things I noticed was that the metal roof installation, over an existing composite roof, makes the unfortunate assumption that the flashing under the old roof is in good shape and will continue to operate. As such on one section of roof that abuts the main house, the flashing was fastened to the side of the wood siding, allowing rain running down the side of the house to go behind the flashing down to, theoretically, the original roof and flashing. Another roof that abuts the main house was installed by Interlock without flashing by shoving it up under the wood siding. This has expedited wood rot of the siding and has not prevented water leaks that completely rotted a significant portion of the exterior wall of the main house. It is crazy to me that anyone would install a roof without ensuring it is flashed properly. Beyond that, trying to work with Interlock to collaborate with our solar installer was a very painful process. Due to Interlock not reading the solar installation plans or passing them along to their roofer, they were not prepared to help with the solar rail installation, leading the solar installer to have to eat the cost of a crew of 8 people that could not do the install as planned as the right roof flashing was not available. Thank goodness the Interlock roofer was willing to not proceed without the right flashing, but it would have been better had the right preparation been made. There is now a leak around the chimney of the house. I have been trying to schedule service with Interlock for over a month and a half. Their "system" has been down for over two months so they cannot find records regarding the roof on my house. They have also been unable to schedule me for service, consistently passing messages along to a local affiliate of some sort that keeps telling me that they can't schedule for service until their system comes back up. I hope I can eventually update this post with some good news, but as of right now I have a list of reasons you should avoid this company.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Newton Highlands
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Newton Highlands, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Newton Highlands.
Does metal roofing handle heavy snow and ice in Newton Highlands?
Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are engineered for snow loads and freeze-thaw stress. Newton Highlands averages about 84 cm of snow annually and experiences roughly 76 freeze-thaw cycles per year, which breaks down conventional asphalt and wood shingles. Aluminum's oxide layer doesn't crack or curl as temperatures swing between freezing and thaw. The lightweight panels—the Shake profile weighs only 0.58 lb/sq ft—distribute snow load evenly without requiring structural reinforcement. Optional snow guards prevent avalanche-style slides while allowing proper drainage.
Why won't aluminum metal roofing rust like steel roofs?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Interlock panels are manufactured from roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), which forms a self-healing oxide layer when exposed to air. If that layer is scratched, it regenerates automatically—a property steel lacks entirely. This matters in Newton Highlands, where annual rainfall reaches about 1,065 mm and moisture accelerates rust formation on iron-based metals. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating, applied to both sides and warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, adds a second protective barrier.
Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?
Metal roofs eliminate the cycle of repeated replacement and landfill disposal. An asphalt roof typically lasts 15-20 years in New England's weather; Interlock's Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited for the original owner and transferable to the next owner for 50 years. Over 40-50 years, you avoid two or three asphalt tear-offs, disposal fees, and labor costs for reinstallation. Newton Highlands' 1,065 mm annual rainfall and 130 km/h wind gusts accelerate asphalt degradation. Metal reflects rather than absorbs that stress. Current financing through Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation.
Will my home's frame need reinforcement for a metal roof?
No. The Mediterranean Tile profile, which visually matches traditional clay or concrete tile, weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft—approximately 96% lighter than the real material it replicates. Even the heavier Shake profile comes in at 0.58 lb/sq ft. Most homes can accept a metal roof directly over existing shingles because the load increase is negligible compared to asphalt. Newton Highlands receives about 84 cm of snow annually; that accumulated load stress is distributed so efficiently across Interlock's interlocking panels that the structural impact is minimal. ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms compliance without reinforcement.
How does freeze-thaw cycling affect metal roofs in Massachusetts winters?
Freeze-thaw cycles are precisely where aluminum excels. Newton Highlands experiences about 76 freeze-thaw days per year—expansion and contraction that splinters wood shingles, cracks asphalt, and corrodes steel fasteners. Aluminum expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or curling; its self-healing oxide layer does not degrade through repeated temperature swings. The four-way interlocking panel design accommodates micro-movement without opening seams. Combined with the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (30-year warranty against fading and chalking), your roof maintains its structural and aesthetic integrity through decades of Newton Highlands winters.
What hail damage protection does Interlock metal roofing offer?
Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest rating available. The Guardian Warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches, an extraordinarily rare occurrence even in severe storms. In Newton Highlands' climate, standard wind gusts reach about 22 km/h with rare extremes to 130 km/h; hail events are statistically infrequent but severe when they occur. The aluminum construction and four-way interlocking strength mean most homeowners see insurance discounts for impact-resistant roofing. Check with your carrier about specific premium reductions; Interlock's certification documentation supports your claim.
Can Interlock roofing withstand Newton Highlands' wind and gusts?
Yes. The roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Newton Highlands experiences typical daily-maximum winds around 22 km/h with gusts peaking near 130 km/h—well within the product's rated capacity. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together in all directions, creating a unified membrane that resists uplift and panel separation. Unlike asphalt shingles, which can lift and tear in sustained gusts, metal panels flex as a system. ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 confirms code compliance for wind-load performance across the northeast region.
How much maintenance does a metal roof require versus asphalt or tile?
Metal roofs require minimal maintenance. Unlike asphalt, which degrades from UV exposure and requires periodic sealing, or wood shingles, which split and rot (especially after Newton Highlands' 76 annual freeze-thaw cycles), metal panels resist all three failure modes. Annual gutter cleaning is standard for any roof type. Interlock's aluminum will not rust, rot, crack, curl, or lose impact resistance—the Guardian Warranty covers all five. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish, applied to both sides, stands up to salt air and acid rain without refinishing. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance needs compared to traditional materials.
Do metal roofs actually lower cooling costs in the summer?
Yes, through reflectivity. energy-efficient Interlock colors achieve initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (the Aged Copper Penny profile) and thermal emissivity of 0.84, measured by the Cool Roof Rating Council. This means the roof reflects rather than absorbs solar heat—a measurable advantage on the 3,109 sunshine hours Newton Highlands receives annually. In summer, lower roof surface temperatures reduce heat transfer into the attic and living spaces, lowering air conditioning load. The effect compounds in a region that experiences warm days even in transitional seasons. Combined with autumn and spring cooling savings, the reflective advantage offsets heating costs slightly due to winter sun angles.
Can you install a metal roof over my existing shingles in Newton Highlands?
Yes. Interlock's lightweight design—even the Mediterranean Tile profile at 0.59 lb/sq ft—allows installation over most existing roofs without removal. This eliminates tear-off labor, debris hauling, and landfill costs. A solid deck underlayment is installed to create the rain barrier and dampen sound (metal on solid decking is acoustically identical to asphalt). Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served this region since 1999 and handles permitting and code compliance under ICC-ES ESR-1790. Installation timeline typically spans 1-2 weeks depending on roof size and existing condition. The current financing offer—no payments, no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off—makes the project more accessible.
