Review: June 21, 2009 Completion: June 21, 2009

We recently had a metal shingle roof installed by Interlock Roofing from Waltham, MA. The company coordinated the delivery of materials and dumpster pick-up. The work crew treated our home and belongings with consideration and respect. I happened to come home while one gentleman cleared the furniture and plants (there were many) from the deck. He moved our tomato plants one at a time as though they were very valuable to him. They worked very hard at our home for four days, two of which were twelve-hour days for them. This was the direct result of the work ethic of Baha, the crew chief. He was fabulous. They worked Saturday and Sunday, which happened to be Father’s Day, in the rain to finish our roof in the time frame they initially told us. He checked in with us frequently for feedback, and we developed quite a rapport. He is a master craftsman. There is no other way to describe the quality of his work. He was concerned that every shingle is the best. He hand-shaped many of them, and it shows. He improved the original plan for the placement of snow guards. The roof is extremely well done, and we are proud of it and the people who did it. We expected our yard to be a mess when the roof was finished. There was no mess. None of our perennials were damaged, and we have several next to the house. One man used a magnet to pick up the nails on the ground from removing the old roof. Baha even had one of his men push the materials in the dumpster down so that it would look as nice as possible for the twelve hours it sat full in our yard.

Based on my original review below, Interlock reached out and was explicit about wanting to know what needed to be done to receive a better review. My experience with Interlock since that point has been excellent. First, the customer service person (Jen) became very responsive. The technician (who I had positive things to say about below) continued to be knowledgeable and focused on doing the job right. The technician applied new caulking around the chimney, alerted me to issues with the chimney cap (not in scope), and completely re-installed the flashing where our original house meets a lower roof (what was the issue resulting in significant exterior, structural wall damage). The technician explained that installation methods for the Interlock product have changed over the years and what was installed originally is no longer the way flashing is installed today. This latest set of interactions with Interlock gives me greater confidence that we would continue to use Interlock for any additions to the house needing roofing (e.g., a portico over the front door, an addition over the garage). If their current technician in the Boston area is an indication of current install quality, then you will have no issues or complaints about the product. I just feel badly for all the folks with older Interlock roofs, like me, where installation methods were unacceptable. Original Review: We bought a house with an Interlock roof. I really want to like Interlock. It seems like a nice product. Unfortunately, the roof installation cut proverbial corners and getting service for the roof has been extremely difficult. For the sake of giving credit where due, their roofer that collaborated with our solar installer was competent. Sadly that is not universally the case. When we first moved in, one of the first things I noticed was that the metal roof installation, over an existing composite roof, makes the unfortunate assumption that the flashing under the old roof is in good shape and will continue to operate. As such on one section of roof that abuts the main house, the flashing was fastened to the side of the wood siding, allowing rain running down the side of the house to go behind the flashing down to, theoretically, the original roof and flashing. Another roof that abuts the main house was installed by Interlock without flashing by shoving it up under the wood siding. This has expedited wood rot of the siding and has not prevented water leaks that completely rotted a significant portion of the exterior wall of the main house. It is crazy to me that anyone would install a roof without ensuring it is flashed properly. Beyond that, trying to work with Interlock to collaborate with our solar installer was a very painful process. Due to Interlock not reading the solar installation plans or passing them along to their roofer, they were not prepared to help with the solar rail installation, leading the solar installer to have to eat the cost of a crew of 8 people that could not do the install as planned as the right roof flashing was not available. Thank goodness the Interlock roofer was willing to not proceed without the right flashing, but it would have been better had the right preparation been made. There is now a leak around the chimney of the house. I have been trying to schedule service with Interlock for over a month and a half. Their "system" has been down for over two months so they cannot find records regarding the roof on my house. They have also been unable to schedule me for service, consistently passing messages along to a local affiliate of some sort that keeps telling me that they can't schedule for service until their system comes back up. I hope I can eventually update this post with some good news, but as of right now I have a list of reasons you should avoid this company.

Thank you so much for meeting with us to arrange the purchase of a new roof by Interlock. It’s gorgeous! It is so comforting to know that our roof is now safe from leaks and ugliness. We had a few obvious leaks every time it rained or snowed, and that hasn’t happened since our new roof was completed. We have seen several people “looking” as they " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">walk or drive by, and several neighbors have made comments as to how great it looks. This was a job that we put off for years – and now we’re so glad that we have done it! What a great crew you had – they were polite – they did the work, and they cleaned up beautifully (even better than how they found it – to our pleasure). The roof was delivered as promised – on time! The crew worked long hours to get it completed, and although we had bad weather on a few of those days – the work was completed in a week! They never interfered with our own schedule and despite the hammering which comes with any job of this nature – we just knew they were getting the work done as expeditiously as possible – working until the available light made it unsafe to continue for the day. Thank you – Interlock is a great company with a product that is sure to give us many years of security, knowing that our roof will surely outlast us and that we don’t have to worry about any future roofing jobs. You were very accommodating and a pleasure to work with! It is great to know that we now have the “best roof” on the block – not the worst!

Review: March 21, 2005 Completion: March 21, 2005

This is to give you feedback on our recent Interlock roof installation. The installation, including stripping the old roofing, went very well and cleaned up was as I had expected. This is an old house with dormers, and even since I have lived here (since 1956), it has had various leak problems that were never solved with new asphalt shingle jobs. Within a week of completion of the Interlock Roof, we had a heavy wet snowstorm and two days of wind-driven rains. Everything is dry. Also, we get lots of comments from passersby about how nice the roof looks. You can consider me satisfied.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Newton Lower Falls

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Newton Lower Falls, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Newton Lower Falls.

How does a metal roof handle Newton Lower Falls' heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?

Aluminum's smooth, slippery surface actually sheds snow and ice better than asphalt, reducing ice dam formation during the area's roughly 93 freeze-thaw days per year. The four-way interlocking panels lock together so tightly that snow-load stress distributes evenly across the roof rather than collecting at weak seams. Unlike asphalt, which becomes brittle in freeze-thaw cycles, aluminum stays flexible and won't crack or curl, even after 120 years of cycling. With about 123 cm of snow annually, this durability saves you from premature shingle failure.

Can aluminum metal roofing rust like steel roofing does?

Aluminum cannot rust at all because it contains no iron—rust requires iron to form. Instead, aluminum naturally develops an oxide layer that actually protects the material, and this layer self-heals when scratched. On top of that, Interlock panels have Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating applied to both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. In Middlesex County's wet climate with 1058 mm of annual rainfall, this means you're getting protection from two independent corrosion-prevention systems, not just one.

Is metal roofing worth the higher upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Metal roofing costs more upfront than asphalt, but you'll install it once and never replace it, while asphalt typically lasts 15–20 years and requires tear-off and landfilling. Interlock's Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, then transferable for 50 years to the next owner—that's the last roof you'll buy. Over 40–50 years of ownership, the cost per year drops below asphalt when you factor in no replacement cycles, minimal maintenance, and potential insurance discounts for Class 4 hail impact resistance.

Do I need structural reinforcement for a metal tile roof over my existing roof?

No reinforcement needed. The Interlock Tile profile weighs only about 0.59 lb per square foot—roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so it installs directly over most existing roofs without any structural upgrades. Asphalt weighs about 2–3 lb per square foot; Tile is a fraction of that. This lightweight advantage means faster, cheaper installation and no costly engineering or framing work, even on older Newton Lower Falls homes with standard rafters.

Will a metal roof hold up in Newton Lower Falls' winter wind gusts?

Yes. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph, and regional gusts typically reach about 104 km/h (65 mph). The interlocking design means panels can't lift or separate in high wind—each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides. This engineering gives you confidence during nor'easters and winter storms, and some insurance companies recognize this performance with discounts on your premiums.

What hail rating does Interlock metal roofing have, and does it affect my insurance?

Interlock carries UL 2218 Class 4, the highest impact rating available—the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Massachusetts insurers often reward Class 4 impact resistance with lower premiums or discounts, because the roof is significantly less likely to need claims. Combined with wind warranty up to 120 mph and freeze-thaw durability over 93 annual cycles, metal roofing appeals to underwriters as a lower-risk investment.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood shakes?

Metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance—no algae treatment, no sealing, no patching. Asphalt develops moss and algae problems, especially in New England's damp 1058 mm annual rainfall; wood shakes invite rot, insect damage, and splitting; tile needs regular caulking. Interlock's aluminum surface sheds debris and resists mold in humid climates. An occasional gutter cleaning is all you need. That's one reason CALGreen lists metal roofing as verified for reduced maintenance—it's actually measurable over the 50-year transfer warranty term.

Is Interlock metal roofing fire-rated and non-combustible?

Yes. Interlock aluminum is Class A fire-rated (non-combustible) and carries ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790, which confirms code compliance under the International Building Code and International Residential Code. Aluminum cannot ignite or spread flame, so your roof contributes zero fuel load in a wildfire or external fire scenario. If your Newton Lower Falls home is in a wooded area or near structures, this non-combustible advantage provides both safety and potential insurance recognition.

Do the reflective coatings on metal roofing actually save on cooling costs?

Yes. Interlock's energy-efficient colors feature thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55, meaning they reflect heat that dark asphalt absorbs. Over Newton Lower Falls' 3054 annual sunshine hours, this reflection reduces solar heat gain on hot days. While the region's mean temperature is only 10.2°C, the reflective benefit still reduces peak summer cooling loads, lowers roof surface temperature, and extends roof life by reducing thermal cycling stress. energy-efficiency certification confirms these savings are measured, not estimated.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Newton Lower Falls, and how long have they been serving the area?

Interlock Metal Roofing (New England) Inc. has served the region since 1999, giving them 25+ years of local experience with Massachusetts snow, freeze-thaw, and coastal moisture patterns. They understand Newton Lower Falls' specific climate and building codes, perform ICC-ESR-1790-compliant installation, and back their work with the Guardian Warranty. Current promotion: no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, or 10% off metal roof installation—ask them about eligibility for your roof.
