Interlock Roofing could have improved during the project because of the measurements. Randal was very upfront in the fact that there was a measurement issue for the total length of the panels. It was an unfortunate missed oversight, but in terms of how it got handled and addressed, I was pleased. They were very professional and I was more than happy to continue working with them for the roof. All in all, I am satisfied with the process.

1. It was an insurance claim and Interlock was the only bidder. 2. Randall came by for an hour before the work was initiated and told us about the product and answered our questions - but he neglected to leave us with any printed materials, and; after the work was completed payment was handled by the insurer and so we have zero paperwork from Interlock. If we had a problem with the product or workmanship we'd have nothing to prove we even did business with Interlock. 3. Your installers seemed to be very diligent people but there was virtually no interaction with them and I suspect this related to a language/culture barrier. We have no problem in dealing with new Canadians, but I suspect that if you had at least one friendly/engaging person to interact with on the jobsite your work satisfaction ratings would improve. Your business is not unique to this phenomenon - there are many well-trained and deeply experienced medical professionals who lack the kind of beside manner that would make them popular with their patients. Charisma helps. 4. There was no commitment to an installation schedule and this caused two problems: a) It fouled up our overall project schedule and create problems with other contractors, and; b) We were forced to forego any plans of getting away in the summer. While it's fair to attribute part of the delays to untimely rains, it was also apparent that Todd takes his family vacation commitments seriously. We don't begrudge anyone a vacation - but your unwillingness to commit to a schedule left us without one. This approach makes it seem like you have a basic disregard for other people and organizations - perhaps the fact that you have no direct competitors on the west coast for this particular product lends itself to this marketing strategy. It's a nice roof.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Qualicum Beach

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Qualicum Beach.

How does a metal roof handle Qualicum Beach's snow and ice buildup?

Aluminum's smooth, interlocking surface sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt, preventing the ice dams that cause leaks during our typical 24 freeze-thaw cycles per year. The four-way interlocking panels create a unified system that resists water infiltration even under the roughly 57 cm of snow we receive annually. You can add snow guards if desired, but the metal itself won't trap moisture or deteriorate from the cycle of freezing and thawing that weakens conventional roofs over time.

Why is aluminum roofing better than steel in Qualicum Beach's coastal climate?

Aluminum contains no iron, so it cannot rust—even in salt-air environments like ours. Steel roofing corrodes when salt spray reaches bare metal; aluminum forms a self-healing oxide layer that prevents corrosion from the start. Our coastal location means salt can travel inland on the roughly 17 km/h typical winds and stronger gusts up to 98 km/h. The Alunar 70% PVDF coating on both sides of every panel (including the underside) adds a second barrier, making aluminum the only metal roofing material that thrives in salt-air zones without rust risk.

Will a metal roof stay on during Qualicum Beach windstorms?

Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h), far exceeding our typical coastal gusts of 98 km/h. The interlocking mechanism locks each panel to its neighbors on all four sides, distributing wind load across the entire roof rather than stressing individual fasteners. When installed to specification, the system performs at UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest available. Your roof will stay secure through the windiest conditions Qualicum Beach experiences.

Does metal roofing handle heavy rain better than asphalt shingles?

Heavy rainfall isn't a problem—Qualicum Beach receives about 1453 mm annually, and metal roofing sheds water faster and more reliably than asphalt. Aluminum panels overlap in four directions, creating a redundant water-shedding system that keeps moisture out even during sustained rain. Once installed over solid decking with proper underlayment, the roof functions like a sealed envelope. The ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 confirms code compliance for water management in high-rain climates. You won't experience the pooling, saturation, or slow leaks that plague aging asphalt after years of our wet winters.

Can an aluminum roof reduce cooling costs in Qualicum Beach's climate?

While our mean temperature of 10.4°C keeps cooling costs modest compared to warmer regions, energy-efficient Interlock colors with solar reflectance up to 0.55 and thermal emissivity of 0.84 mean less heat absorbed into your attic year-round. That translates to smaller temperature swings inside during our roughly 2980 annual sunshine hours and fewer days when AC or ventilation fans need to work hard. The reflective coating also reduces thermal stress on the metal itself, contributing to the roof's durability through seasonal temperature changes.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof in Qualicum Beach?

No structural reinforcement is required. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile, for example, weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft, roughly 96% lighter than real concrete or clay tile. This means the roof installs directly over your existing structure without additional framing or support. You can even install metal roofing over most existing asphalt roofs, saving the cost and landfill impact of a tear-off. The lightweight design works perfectly for older Qualicum Beach homes that were never engineered to support heavy slate or tile.

What's the real lifespan of an Interlock metal roof with the Guardian Warranty?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner—covering rust, rot, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. That means no degradation of coverage over time; you're protected the entire life you own the home. The Alunar coating itself is warranted 30 years against chalking and fading (measured to ASTM D4214 and D2244 standards). If you sell, the warranty transfers once to the next owner for a 50-year term from completion, adding appeal and transparency to the sale.

How long does metal roof installation take, and can it go over my existing roof?

Most residential installations in the Qualicum Beach area complete within a few days, depending on roof size and complexity. Yes, Interlock installs directly over most existing asphalt roofs—no tear-off required unless structural damage exists. Your installer removes old flashing and ridge caps, installs new underlayment where needed, and fastens the interlocking aluminum panels to the solid deck below. This approach saves time, labor, and the environmental cost of landfilling asphalt. Our local installer, Interlock Metal Roofing (BC) Ltd., has been serving this region since 1983 and coordinates the full process from measurement to final walkthrough.

How much maintenance does an aluminum metal roof actually need?

Far less than asphalt, wood, or tile. Aluminum doesn't split, curl, crack, or rot—eliminating the costliest maintenance headaches of traditional roofs. You'll never replace individual shingles or patches. The Alunar coating resists weathering through our 2980 annual sunshine hours and frequent rain cycles, staying color-stable for three decades. Periodic inspection and minor gutter cleaning are all that's needed. The roof is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, and the material itself requires no treatments, sealants, or preventive repairs. It's truly the last roof you'll install.

Is aluminum roofing really more environmentally responsible than asphalt?

Absolutely. Aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable—at the end of life, the entire roof returns to the recycling stream indefinitely, never degrading in value. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, end up in landfills by the millions of tons annually; once there, they persist for decades. By choosing Interlock, you eliminate multiple asphalt tear-offs and landfill contributions over the lifetime you'd otherwise spend replacing shingles every 15–20 years. The aluminum itself is manufactured in Delta, BC, reducing transportation emissions. Over the roof's multi-decade lifespan, you're choosing circular economy over linear waste—a meaningful difference for Qualicum Beach homeowners who value environmental stewardship.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Qualicum Beach’s climate?

Yes. Qualicum Beach averages about 57 cm of snow, 1453 mm of rain, roughly 24 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 98 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
