Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |
| Corrosion resistance: aluminum (won’t rust) | Salt air, coastal humidity, wet climates: aluminum naturally resists rust and corrosion, reducing long-term failure risk in marine or high-moisture environments. |
| Heat / UV durability: baked-on coating system | High heat, intense sun, thermal cycling: coatings resist UV breakdown and temperature-swing fatigue, slowing fading and surface degradation. |
| Moss / algae resistance: smooth coated surface | Wet shade, organic growth: low-porosity metal surface gives moss/algae less to grip, reducing staining and maintenance. |
| Material: heavy-gauge aluminum roof profiles (Slate / Shake / Shingle / Tile / Standing Seam) | All-season structural stability: lightweight, dent-resistant metal system stays stable through large hot-cold swings and severe weather. |
| Expected lifespan: 50+ years | Long-term durability across climates: avoids re-roof cycles typical of shorter-life materials, even in high-stress environments. |
| Warranty: Lifetime-Limited, non-prorated + 50-year transferable | Lifetime protection + resale value: guarantees long-term material confidence and transfers to future owners. |

What our customers are saying:
Hire installers whe know how to prep roofs for interlock roofing materials
If they could have made the weather better it would have been great!
I was not there, for most of the project.
It didn't have anything to do with interlock, it had to do with that staff trying to find workmen. They have a very good product and I will be using them again.
They did a good job. It took a long time. I know they are busy. I am happy. They would suppose to be there at eight in the morning and show up at five in the afternoon and work until eight at night. It was that way the entire project.
I would recommend them to a friend as far as my personal view, but I have not had any long term experience with it.
I think the only issue was the follow up after the fact.
We are really pleased with the job. It is on a church steeple and we have had many positive comments made to us.
The crew did not show up on time, they were constantly late. There were plenty of days when we had perfect weather and they did not show up, apparently he or the crew were working on other projectsThey did not have the proper tickets for staging which shut down the operation for a week. The crew leader (Steve Morash) gave our address for when he was given a ticket by inspectors. The project took 47 days. Also your company was difficult to reach and the warranty was very slow in being delivered to us. I think the above is enough said. While we are pleased with the product, and the work completed, the work ethic and deadlines (not made by us, I may add) left little to be desired.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Annapolis Royal
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Annapolis Royal.
Will a metal roof hold up through Annapolis Royal's freeze-thaw cycles?
Yes—aluminum's oxide layer actually strengthens when exposed to freeze-thaw stress, unlike asphalt or wood that crack and curl under cycling. Your area averages about 73 freeze-thaw days per year, which is exactly where aluminum roofing proves its durability. The material expands and contracts uniformly without losing structural integrity, and the four-way interlocking panels remain watertight through thousands of cycles. Asphalt shingles, by contrast, become brittle and split after repeated freezing; wood shakes rot from absorbed water that freezes inside the grain.
How does a metal roof handle heavy snow loads in this region?
Metal roofing sheds snow reliably because the smooth, hard surface prevents it from bonding and building up like it does on asphalt. Annapolis Royal receives about 159 cm of snow annually, but the sloped panels direct that load downward instead of allowing it to sit and create ice dams. The aluminum Shake and Slate profiles offer surface texture that improves traction for snow guards if you want them, while weighing just 0.41 to 0.58 lb/sq ft—so light that no structural reinforcement is needed even with heavy accumulation. Asphalt and wood-shake roofs trap moisture underneath snow, speeding decay.
Can a metal roof rust in the Annapolis Valley's wet climate?
Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron, and the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon coating protects both panel sides—especially important in coastal-influenced climates like the Annapolis Valley. When the coating is scratched, aluminum's oxide layer self-heals automatically, unlike steel roofing that requires constant maintenance. With about 1049 mm of rainfall and occasional salt-laden air, you're looking at a material that actually becomes more durable with time, not weaker. The 30-year coating warranty against chalking and fading (ASTM D4214/D2244 tested) gives you documented peace of mind that the finish won't degrade.
Are metal roofs safe in the high-wind gusts that hit this area?
Absolutely. Annapolis Royal experiences typical gusts up to 143 km/h, and Interlock metal roofing is warranted to resist winds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. The four-way interlocking panels lock together mechanically, creating a continuous, unified surface that distributes wind pressure evenly instead of allowing individual shingles to lift and tear. There's no nailing pattern that can loosen over time, and no exposed fasteners for wind to catch. The ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluation confirms the system meets IBC and IRC wind-load standards for this region.
Will my insurance company offer discounts if I install a metal roof?
Many carriers do, because Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Contact your insurance agent with the UL 2218 Class 4 certification; some insurers reduce premiums by 10–20% for impact-rated roofs because the likelihood of a claim drops dramatically. Asphalt and wood are vulnerable to hail damage that requires costly replacement; aluminum's hardness means hail passes through without structural compromise. Current regional promotions also include interest-free payments for 3 months and savings of at least $2499 on installation, which improves the financial case further.
What does the warranty cover, and how long does it really last?
The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for you as the original owner—it covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's transferable once, giving the next owner 50 years from completion, which means the roof outlasts most mortgages and adds documented resale value. There's no degradation schedule; the warranty doesn't weaken over time. For comparison, asphalt shingles carry 20–30 year warranties that are prorated (you pay more to claim after year 10), and those materials are typically spent after 15–20 years in a climate with 73 freeze-thaw days per year and 159 cm of snow.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or wood?
Metal roofing requires virtually no maintenance—no algae treatment, no shingle replacement, no wood sealing or replacement. Annapolis Royal's 1049 mm annual rainfall keeps the surface naturally clean, and the aluminum finish is rated CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance. Asphalt shingles need periodic inspection and spot replacement after about 15 years; wood shakes require regular sealing, moss removal, and individual shake replacement due to freeze-thaw damage common to your 73 annual freeze-thaw cycles. Over a 50-year span, the labor and material cost of maintaining asphalt or wood compounds dramatically, while metal needs only a visual inspection every 5–10 years.
Is a metal roof more expensive than asphalt over the long run?
Upfront, metal costs more per square foot, but over the roof's lifespan it's the last roof you buy—meaning lower total cost of ownership. Asphalt requires replacement every 15–20 years in your climate (with 159 cm snow, 1049 mm rain, and 73 freeze-thaw days annually), while metal lasts 50+ years under the transferable Guardian Warranty. Three replacement cycles of asphalt, plus labor and disposal costs, typically exceed the single metal installation. Current financing—interest-free payments for 3 months plus savings of at least $2499 on installation—reduces the entry price significantly. When you sell, the transferable warranty and proven durability improve resale value, recovering much of your investment.
Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock metal roofing weighs as little as 0.41 lb/sq ft for the Shingle profile and 0.59 lb/sq ft for the Tile—approximately 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so your existing framing carries it easily. You can install directly over most existing asphalt roofs without removal and rebuilding, which saves time and disposal costs. Even the heaviest Interlock profile is lighter than the snow load your roof already supports during Annapolis Royal's 159 cm winters. Steel tile roofing and slate, by contrast, can require expensive structural upgrades; aluminum's lightness eliminates that barrier entirely.
