Review: April 13, 2026 Completion: May 3, 2016

We moved into our new house in 1984. Our new house came with new 25 year shingles. In 2004, 20 years later we noticed that our roof shingles needed to be redone. Now, back in 1984 they used asbestos in the roof shingles and although at the time they said they were 25 year shingles, we were still happy to get 20 years out of them. So, in 2004 we got a quote and had the roof re-shingled. We paid extra for the 25 year shingles as we had such a good result with the original shingles. In 2016 (i.e. 12 years later) my neighbour told us that our shingles on the south side of the house were cracked with rolled up edges and needed to be replaced. (We can't see the south roof of our house unless we are visiting the neighbours.) The shingles on the north side were still ok, but since you can't really shingle half a roof we knew that we had to have the whole roof done...after just 12 years. We were a little upset about this and decided to go to the National Home Show in Toronto to look at alternatives. We met Tom Watson at the Interlock Metal Roofing booth and he took a lot of time and explained the complete roofing system to us. We liked what we saw and what was explained to us and we arranged to have a home visit from Interlock and to give us a quote. The metal roof was certainly a lot more expensive than a regular asphalt shingle roof, but we decided to get the metal roof anyways because we did not want the hassle of having to re-shingle every 10 or 11 years...and there are also some other unforeseen benefits detailed below that we did not know about at the time. The metal roof comes with a Lifetime Limited Warranty, 50 year transferable, not prorated so even though more expensive it adds value to lyour home because if in the future you are looking to sell, the buyer knows he won't have any roof problems for the 50 year life of the roof. Your roof becomes an asset instead of a liability. The installation happened over 4-5 days. I paid a lot of attention to what they were doing and how they were doing it. The roof vents were removed. These are the same roof vents that raccoons like to rip off for access to your attic, so that potential problem went away. A ridge vent (google it) was installed on the top of the roof and it is low profile and fits in so you would not know that it is there. Raccoons have been known to chew a hole in asphalt shingles and roofing plywood to get into your attic. With a metal roof, it isn't happening. That mode of access is eliminated. Now, with our previous asphalt shingles we had constant problems with raccoons pooping on our roof (sound familiar?) and for some reason, at least for the last 10 years that we have had the metal roof, that has not happened. I don't know why, but I can speculate that the raccoons find the metal roof very slippery and they are not comfortable being up there and doing their business while trying not to slide off the roof. Also, in the past we have had squirrels occasionally make their way through, under, beside our asphalt shingles and get into our attic. That will never happen with a metal roof because the whole roof is sealed and northing is getting that way. If you are concerned about high winds ripping off your shingles you don't have to worry with a metal roof. Each and every metal shingle is fastened to the roof with aluminum screws (note the metal roof shingles are painted and baked to a tough finish) and they are interlocked with each other, so you may lose your entire roof in a hurricane, but the metal shingles will still be attached to it. We moved into our new house in 1984. After about 2 years of sweating through humid summers, we installed an A/C system. Our new A/C system worked ok in that it removed the humidity and cooled the house, but with the high 37 deg C temperatures it was struggling. The A/C would run continuously and never stopped on those hot days, but once the metal roof was installed it cycled on and off as designed. We highly recommend Interlock Metal Roofing.

Bruce was completely thorough in his presentation of why metal shingles were the future of roofing. Product selection was great, and Bruce was pleasant and friendly. The process was longer than expected, but the results were fantastic. Having the neighbours come by and ask questions definitely means we made the right choice. The compliments were many. Thank you to Interlock roofing and the team for their service and workmanship.

I would say they need to be more up front regarding the delivery and length of the job. They didn't set the correct expectation.

Review: June 8, 2016 Completion: May 20, 2016

It was a little long because there was only one person working on it. If they would have had more people they could have finished the work quicker. Overall, very good job and we are happy with the roof.

Communication, supervision and workmanship. When they start a project they need to be better prepared with their materials for prep work. Because of their shoddy work I have stains on the maple wood.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Aurora

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Aurora, Ontario. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Aurora.

How does a metal roof handle Aurora's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?

Metal roofs shed snow more effectively than asphalt because aluminum's smooth surface and thermal properties resist ice dam formation—critical in Aurora, where you average about 117 cm of snow yearly and experience roughly 86 freeze-thaw days per year. The four-way interlocking panels stay watertight through repeated freezing and thawing; aluminum's oxide layer doesn't crack or curl like asphalt, and it won't rot like wood shake. Snow guards are available if you prefer controlled snow release, but the roof itself handles the freeze-thaw cycle that degrades conventional materials.

Will a metal roof rust in Aurora's wet climate?

No—aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron. Instead, it forms a self-healing oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath; if the coating is scratched, the oxide reforms automatically. This matters in Aurora, where annual rainfall averages 780 mm and humidity fluctuates with seasonal snow. The Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish is applied to both sides of every panel and warranted 30 years against chalking and fading, giving you a durable barrier on top of the aluminum's inherent corrosion resistance.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Yes—metal roofing is the last roof you'll buy. While initial cost is higher, asphalt typically lasts 15–25 years and requires periodic repairs and eventual replacement, generating landfill waste each time. An Interlock metal roof carries a lifetime limited material warranty for the original owner, with transferable protection extending 50 years for the next owner. Over a 40- or 50-year horizon, you avoid multiple tear-offs, labor, and disposal costs. Current financing options include interest-free payments for 3 months, and installations qualify for savings of at least $2,499.

Can a metal roof stand up to Aurora's winter wind gusts?

Yes—the four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to specification. Aurora's typical wind gusts reach about 113 km/h, well within that rating. Each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides, creating a unified system that distributes wind load evenly across the roof. This solid interlock is why the roof performs reliably through the seasonal storms that test conventional shingles, which can lift, tear, or peel under sustained gusts.

How does metal roofing survive Aurora's temperature swings?

Aluminum expands and contracts slightly with temperature but does so uniformly and predictably—it won't crack, curl, or split like asphalt or wood. Aurora's roughly 86 freeze-thaw days per year put real stress on roofing materials; asphalt becomes brittle in cold, then soft and damaged in spring thaw. Metal's continuous cycle of expansion and contraction doesn't degrade performance because aluminum lacks the porosity that traps water. The Alunar-coated finish remains flexible across temperature ranges, so your roof handles Aurora's mean temperature of 8.5°C and seasonal extremes without loss of integrity.

Do metal roofs help reduce cooling costs in a temperate climate?

Yes. energy-efficient Interlock colors offer thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55, meaning they reflect the heat that asphalt absorbs and converts to attic warmth. In Aurora, with about 3,017 annual sunshine hours, this reflectance reduces cooling demand during summer and moderates attic temperatures year-round. The metal stays cooler than dark asphalt, lowering the cooling load on air-conditioning systems and reducing heat transfer into conditioned spaces. Cool Roof Rating Council verification confirms these reflective properties meet efficiency standards.

Can my home's framing support a metal tile roof without reinforcement?

Yes—Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft, making it approximately 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This means you can install it over most existing roof structures without costly reinforcement, unlike traditional tile which requires upgraded framing. Even the heavier Shake profile installs at just 0.58 lb/sq ft. Aluminum's light weight is a practical advantage in Aurora, where you're already managing about 117 cm of snow annually; a lighter roof reduces the total load on your home's structure, and the aluminum's strength-to-weight ratio means you get durability without bulk.

What is the hail rating on a metal roof, and could it lower insurance?

Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 rating means the roof resists damage from impacts that would dent or crack asphalt or slate. Many insurers recognize this resilience and offer premium discounts for Class 4 roofs, offsetting part of the installation cost. In Aurora, where severe hail is a risk during spring and summer storms, a non-prorated lifetime material warranty against impact loss provides peace of mind that asphalt cannot match.

Is metal roofing better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Yes—Interlock aluminum roofing is approximately 95% recyclable, ending the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle. Every time an asphalt roof reaches end-of-life, tons of material go to landfills; a metal roof lasts 50 years or more, and when it eventually needs recycling, aluminum retains value and reprocesses cleanly. The lightweight profile also reduces transportation emissions during installation and manufacturing since no structural reinforcement is required. CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance and waste generation. Choosing a 50-year roof over three 15-year asphalt roofs cuts waste and environmental impact substantially.

Does Interlock have a local installer in the Aurora area?

Yes—Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. has served the region since 1998, bringing nearly three decades of experience to your installation. The same company that manufactured your roof at the Delta, BC facility and installed it at Antarctic research stations handles local projects with the same precision and quality. When you choose a local installer, you get faster response times, familiarity with Aurora's climate and building codes, and warranty service from someone who knows your roof personally. Their ICC-ES ESR-1790 compliance and experience with over 25 years of installations means your project is backed by proven expertise.
