Review: April 7, 2015

Very disappointed

★★★★★
Review: September 22, 2014 Completion: July 24, 2014

On July 23 2014 when roof installation was competed we were highly satisfied with both product and service, but had issues with the installation of snow guards (Some were missed in installation and had to be retrofitted. Others were misplaced) . THEN, it all went south. 1 1/2 boxes of left over shingles were removed following completion of the roofing without our permission. These have not been returned nor credited. A serious leak (1 1/2 inches per half hour) occurred twice due to a faulty designed roof vent has left the roof less than pristine following correction (traffic and retrofitted shingles). In the second case, we had to install a tarp at 2:00 in the morning during a thunder storm to prevent further damage, water running across the floor, down registers, and into the basement.THEN, we had to deal with Tony Lupton and his supervisor Martin Piatoca regarding compensation. The leak has been fixed but the interior damage remains unresolved two months later with no resolution in sight. When the leak was reported, Tony allowed us to retain $5000 from our payment to deal with the repairs. Excellent. When we began negotiations surrounding the $5000 for "our dissatisfaction, our past efforts, and inconvenience related to the leaks, the expected efforts and inconvenience to perform ceiling repairs and the cost of the repairs and various aspects of the install." we were presented with invoice ONMS 14 096 that included a typed message - " Warranty will be voided if 3 quotes for damages are not received within 14 days". We did not agree to get 3 quotes without an understanding of the value of our efforts, and we could not meet the timeline. Consequently, we paid the $5000 on Sept 03, 2014 to retain the warranty, and are awaiting its delivery. We do not agree that surplus materials, paid for by us, are the property of Interlock. We do not not agree that we should be expected to provide services on Interlock's behalf for free. We do not agree that improper installation has the same value as proper installation (snow guards and vent). We do not agree with Tony and Martin's approach to compensation negotiations, but the Patty Means' post in Homestars.com combined with our experience, suggests threats to revoke the warranty is a company approved tactic. If so, our paying $5000 to retain the warranty was a bad investment. But hopefully sober minds will see our experience, and the warranty tactic has a much more far reaching and consequently more serious business impact. If you are sincere in your "ongoing efforts to deliver a consistently exceptional customer experience", please review our case and resume negotiations to restore our experience to exceptional - where we once were..

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Bowmanville

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Bowmanville, Ontario. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Bowmanville.

Will a metal roof handle Bowmanville's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes — aluminum's crystalline structure actually strengthens under freeze-thaw stress, unlike asphalt or wood that crack and curl. Bowmanville experiences roughly 76 freeze-thaw days per year, plus about 107 cm of snow and 834 mm of rain. Interlock panels are roofing-grade 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), which naturally resists the expansion-contraction damage that degrades shingle roofs in your climate. The four-way interlocking design allows minor panel movement without joint separation, so your roof stays watertight through the winter-to-spring transition.

How does metal roofing handle heavy snow and ice dams in Ontario?

Metal roofing sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt because its hard, smooth surface provides no grip — snow slides cleanly off when temperatures warm. In Bowmanville, you're looking at roughly 107 cm of snow annually and gusts exceeding 100 km/h, so shedding capacity matters. Optional snow guards preserve snow in your gutters if you want it, but most homeowners in your area appreciate the quick runoff, which also prevents the ice-dam buildup that causes attic moisture and leaks. The lightweight panels (Cedar Shingle installs at 0.41 lb/sq ft) won't create dangerous snow loads even if it sticks temporarily.

Why is aluminum roofing better than steel in Ontario's wet climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron — the metal naturally forms a transparent oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, protecting the material underneath. Bowmanville sits in a humid maritime-influenced region with 834 mm annual rainfall, so corrosion resistance is critical for a 50-year roof. Steel roofing requires expensive paint systems and eventually fails at cut edges and fasteners; Interlock's aluminum is coated with Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish on both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. That dual-coat approach is especially valuable near salt-air zones, and the material has been installed successfully from coastal BC homes to an Antarctic research station.

Can a metal roof handle Bowmanville's wind gusts?

Absolutely — the four-way interlocking panel design is engineered to lock panels together against uplift, and Interlock's warranty covers wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h). Your region sees typical daily-max winds around 22 km/h with gusts near 118 km/h, well within that rated capacity. Each panel interlocks on all four sides, so wind pressure can't separate seams or peel edges the way it does with shingled roofs. The lightweight construction also means no structural reinforcement is needed, so you're not paying for foundation work — just a secure installation over your existing roof structure.

Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost in Bowmanville?

Metal roofing is the last roof you'll buy — most homeowners save money when you factor in the full lifecycle. An asphalt roof lasts 15-20 years and requires multiple replacements over 50 years; Interlock's Guardian Warranty is lifetime limited and non-prorated for the original owner, then transferable for 50 years to the next owner. In Bowmanville's harsh weather — 76 freeze-thaw cycles, 107 cm snow, 834 mm rain — asphalt deteriorates faster. Current promotion: interest-free payments for 3 months and at least $2,499 savings on installation. You avoid tear-off labor costs, landfill fees, and the compounding price of replacement shingles over decades.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need?

Virtually none — Interlock aluminum roofing requires no more upkeep than asphalt and far less than wood shakes or clay tile. You don't need to replace cracked or curled shingles, scrub moss, or seal joints. The hard surface sheds debris, and annual gutters cleaning is standard for any roof. Interlock's coating is verified by the Cool Roof Rating Council for reduced maintenance, and the material's non-corrosive nature means no rust inspections or protective treatments. In Bowmanville's wet climate with 834 mm annual rainfall, that's a real advantage — you're not fighting algae stains or water damage like you would with asphalt or wood.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for metal tile?

No — Interlock's Mediterranean Tile profile is approximately 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile, so no structural reinforcement is necessary. The Tile installs at only 0.59 lb/sq ft, compared to traditional tile at 16+ pounds per square foot. Because metal roofing is so lightweight, it installs directly over your existing roof in most cases, eliminating expensive structural work and the debris removal costs of a full tear-off. This is especially valuable in Bowmanville, where older homes with wood framing can't support traditional tile. You get authentic tile aesthetics with zero foundation strain.

What's the hail rating on metal roofing, and can it lower my insurance?

Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating — the highest available — and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 impact resistance often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts because the roof is far less likely to need claims. While Bowmanville doesn't sit in an extreme hail belt, the combination of heavy snow (107 cm annually), freeze-thaw stress (76 days per year), and occasional severe weather means impact durability matters. Aluminum's hardness and flexibility absorb impacts better than brittle asphalt, which cracks and loses granules under the same conditions.

How long does metal roof installation take, and can it go over my existing roof?

Installation typically takes 3-7 days depending on roof size and complexity — faster than an asphalt tear-off-and-replace job. Interlock panels install over most existing roofs without removal, saving labor, debris hauling, and disposal costs. The local installer, Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd., has served this region since 1998 and knows Bowmanville's weather demands. Minimal disruption means your gutters, vents, and flashing integrate cleanly, and you avoid the extended exposure to rain or snow that a full tear-off creates. The four-way interlocking design makes sealing fast and foolproof — no chance of missed nails or gaps.

Is metal roofing more environmentally responsible than asphalt?

Interlock aluminum roofing is approximately 95% recyclable and breaks the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle that happens every 15-20 years. When asphalt shingles reach the end of their life, most are hauled to landfills; metal roofing is reinstalled or reclaimed for its material value. The lightweight aluminum (Cedar Shingle at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means fewer trucks to haul and lower transportation emissions. In Bowmanville, where you're replacing roofs more frequently due to 76 annual freeze-thaw cycles and 107 cm snow, choosing a 50-year product instead of a 15-year one dramatically reduces construction waste and resource consumption over your home's lifetime.
