We purchased this product from Interlock after admiring other projects they had completed in our neighbourhood. The owners of the other homes highly recommended Interlock Industries, as do we. Our roof has drawn interest from many passerby’s during the installation and since completion. The charcoal slate product we selected is very striking. The Installer who completed the project did an excellent job and was thorough in his cleanup during and at the end of the project. Since the aluminum “shingles” were installed on top of the existing shingles there was no need to dump a whole load of old materials into landfill which was an important consideration in our decision. And since our original roof was in fairly good condition, a layer of strapping was not required before installing the aluminum product. Positive: Professionalism, Value Services: Roof installation

Bruce (sales)walked me through the product thoroughly and worked with me for financing The roofers were able to come within a week of me signing the contract and were done in two days. All the neighbours have very positive comments on the look of the roof. It is quieter than my old asphalt roof and stood up well to a lot of wind and snow this winter. Review: February 24, 2021 Completion: September 28, 2020

I would say they should put on more snow guards. It was a long project. I don't know if they normally take 6-7 days. We were home when it was being done and during covid. We were very understanding of the team's needs to use our facilities. We really sort of became a family. Having a project that takes that long, I personally felt it was slightly intrusive into my space, even though we love them all.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in London

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in London, Ontario. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in London.

How does a metal roof handle London's heavy snow and freeze-thaw cycles?

Metal roofs shed snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt because aluminum's smooth surface prevents buildup that leads to ice dams. London receives about 115 cm of snow annually and experiences roughly 83 freeze-thaw days per year—conditions that crack and curl asphalt shingles over time. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels remain structurally sound through these cycles because the material itself does not absorb moisture or expand unpredictably. The panels' weight (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft) means no snow load concerns, and optional snow guards keep accumulation from sliding suddenly onto walkways.

Will freeze-thaw cycling damage aluminum roofing over 20+ years?

No. Unlike asphalt, wood, or concrete tile, aluminum does not absorb water, so it cannot crack, split, or rot as temperatures swing below and above freezing. London's 83 annual freeze-thaw days place it in a moderate-stress zone, yet roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloys are engineered precisely for this—Interlock panels have performed in far harsher climates since 1998. The real vulnerability in freeze-thaw zones is substrate breakdown and fastener corrosion; Interlock's four-way interlocking design minimizes fastener exposure, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating protects both panel sides for 30 years against environmental degradation.

Can aluminum roofing rust or corrode in Ontario's wet climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the metal that rusts. Instead, aluminum naturally develops a microscopic, self-healing oxide layer that protects against corrosion even in wet, salty, or polluted air. London receives about 873 mm of annual rainfall, and the region's typical wind gusts reach 108 km/h, both factors that would accelerate rust on steel or iron roofing. Interlock's Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish—applied to both sides of every panel—adds a 30-year warranty against chalking and fading, protecting the oxide layer beneath and ensuring durability through decades of Ontario precipitation and salt-laden winter roads.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure to support metal roofing?

Almost never. Interlock metal roofing weighs as little as 0.41 lb/sq ft (Slate profile), making it roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile—so light that most homes require no structural reinforcement. Because London receives about 115 cm of snow annually, that weight savings is a real advantage: the roof carries snow load easily, and the underlying structure faces less cumulative stress over decades. The panels can install directly over your existing asphalt shingles, felt, or wood, which means no costly framing upgrades. A structural engineer will almost always approve the retrofit, especially when compared to traditional tile alternatives.

How strong do wind gusts need to be to damage this metal roof?

Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when properly installed—far beyond London's typical gusts of about 108 km/h. The interlocking design means each panel overlaps its neighbors on all four edges, distributing wind pressure across the entire system rather than concentrating it on fasteners or seams. This engineering is why ice-es evaluation report ESR-1790 approves the panels for high-wind zones. Even London's occasional strong storms, which may gust at or near 108 km/h, pose no risk; you're looking at a roof engineered for wind speeds that are twice as severe.

Does metal roofing hold up in hail, and can it lower insurance costs?

Yes. Interlock achieves UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. London's climate data shows occasional severe weather, and a Class 4 metal roof often qualifies for homeowner insurance discounts because it resists damage that would shred asphalt or wood shingles. Many insurers recognize that Class 4 roofing reduces claims over the roof's life. Contact your insurance provider with the UL 2218 Class 4 certificate and the Guardian's lifetime material warranty—both documents support a conversation about premium reduction and long-term savings.

Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles over time?

Yes, when you compare total cost over the roof's life. Asphalt typically lasts 15–20 years and requires two to three replacements in 50 years, plus tear-off, disposal, and labor for each cycle. Interlock's lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner, transferable for 50 years to the next owner) means you install once and maintain rarely. The current regional promotion offers interest-free payments for 3 months and saves at least $2,499 on installation, lowering the entry cost. Factor in avoided re-roofing, minimal maintenance, and potential insurance discounts, and aluminum becomes the last roof you buy—a financial anchor for homeowners planning to stay in their home.

How much maintenance does a metal roof really need in Ontario?

Far less than asphalt, wood, or tile. Metal roofs do not split, crack, curl, or shed granules—the common failure modes of competitors. London's approximately 873 mm annual rain and gusts to 108 km/h cause debris accumulation and fastener corrosion on traditional roofs; Interlock's four-way interlocking design minimizes fastener exposure, and the Alunar 70% PVDF coating protects against environmental breakdown for 30 years. Routine maintenance is seasonal gutter clearing and the occasional visual inspection—no specialist needed. The Guardian Warranty covers rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance, meaning major failures are non-existent over decades.

Can you install metal roofing over my existing asphalt shingles without tearing everything off?

Yes. Interlock's feather-light weight (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft) allows installation directly over most existing roofs—no tear-off labor, no landfill fees, no days of disruption. A qualified installer confirms the substrate is sound, adds new underlayment, and fastens the panels according to ICC-ES ESR-1790 specifications, which govern both new construction and retrofit installations. The entire process typically takes 2–4 days, depending on roof size and complexity. By keeping the old roof in place as a barrier, you gain added insulation and sound damping. Interlock Metal Roofing (Ontario) Ltd. has installed thousands of retrofits across southwest Ontario since 1998 and can walk you through the timeline and site logistics.

Is metal roofing actually better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Significantly. Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable at end of life, whereas asphalt shingles end up in landfills because recycling is rarely economical. Over a homeowner's lifetime, asphalt typically generates two to three tear-offs and landfill deposits; a metal roof generates zero waste cycles. The aluminum itself is sourced from recycled content and manufactured in Delta, BC since 1998, reducing embodied energy versus virgin production. London receives about 873 mm rain and 115 cm snow annually, creating a damp climate where asphalt degradation accelerates, driving premature replacement and disposal. Choosing metal breaks that cycle and supports a closed-loop material economy—your roof becomes a resource, not a waste stream.
