Review: September 28, 2020 Completion: July 11, 2020

We love the roof. It looks nice and we get a lot of compliments from the owners in the condos next door and even from strangers. We like the way it sounds in the rain. We love the way the workers put plywood, then insulaltion and cushioning between the plywood and the aluminum and even another layer on the standing seam part. It would have been nice to know during the project that the crew was coming or not coming from one day to the next. Sometimes we got conflicting information. Sometimes they didn't come because they were doing a job somewhere else that took priority. I had this roof replaced in aluminum because I am almost 80, and I want to leave this beach house to my children and grandchildren and not have them have to replace the roof for the next 50 years. I bought the house almost 50 years ago and asphalt roofs do not last long with salt air and sea gulls.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Dayton

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Dayton, Maine. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Dayton.

Will a metal roof handle Maine's snow load and ice dams?

Yes—Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels shed snow and ice reliably, even under Dayton's average 121 cm annual snowfall. The smooth, slippery surface naturally encourages melting and runoff; paired with optional snow guards, the system prevents dangerous slides while minimizing ice dam formation. Snow guards are particularly valuable here, where freeze-thaw cycles occur roughly 83 days per year, because they allow controlled, gradual drainage rather than sudden mass release that strains gutters and valleys.

Does aluminum roofing handle freeze-thaw cycles without cracking?

Aluminum's molecular structure makes it immune to the cracking and deterioration that plague asphalt, wood, and clay through freeze-thaw stress. With Dayton averaging 83 freeze-thaw days annually and 121 cm of snow, traditional materials expand and contract repeatedly—weakening seals and splitting—while Interlock's 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy simply cycles elastically without permanent damage. The Guardian warranty covers cracking explicitly, reflecting decades of proven performance across Canadian coastal climates with similar freeze-thaw intensity.

Can aluminum roofing rust in a rainy Maine climate?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron; instead, it develops a microscopic oxide layer that self-heals when scratched, protecting the material indefinitely. Dayton receives roughly 995 mm of rain yearly, and the Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish—applied to both sides of every panel and warranted 30 years against fading—adds an extra defense against moisture exposure. This dual protection is why Interlock installations range from coastal salt-air homes to remote research stations, performing flawlessly in conditions far harsher than inland Maine.

How does metal roofing perform in Dayton's wind gusts?

Interlock's four-way interlocking panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph, well above Dayton's typical gusts near 121 km/h (75 mph). The mechanical lock-and-seam system creates a unified assembly that distributes wind load evenly across the roof deck, preventing the panel flutter or uplift that weakens asphalt shingles. Dayton's mean daily-max winds of about 19 km/h pose no risk; the interlocking design provides margin for the occasional severe gust without requiring additional fastening or structural modification.

Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's aluminum panels weigh roughly 0.41–0.59 lb/sq ft depending on profile—the Mediterranean Tile, for example, is about 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This extraordinary lightness lets you install metal roofing directly over most existing asphalt or wood roofs without expensive frame upgrades. Dayton's snow load of 121 cm annually is manageable because the panels' low weight leaves capacity in your existing structure to safely support both the new roof and seasonal accumulation.

Will a metal roof get dented by hail, and can it lower my insurance?

Interlock holds a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Class 4 metal roofs often qualify homeowners for insurance discounts because they resist damage that would total asphalt or wood; many insurers recognize the durability and file fewer claims. While hail is not a primary Dayton concern given the climate data, the armor-grade impact resistance combined with non-combustible aluminum construction may help offset the cost of upgrading, so contact your insurer for current incentives.

Does metal roofing help with heating and cooling costs?

Yes. Interlock's energy-efficient colors feature thermal emissivity of 0.84 and solar reflectance up to 0.55, which reduces heat absorption compared to asphalt—important during Dayton's 3076 annual sunshine hours. In summer, reflective coatings lower cooling demand; in winter, the low emissivity reduces radiant heat loss, moderating heating swings. The Cool Roof Rating Council certification confirms this thermal performance, translating directly to lower utility bills and reduced HVAC strain over the roof's 50+ year lifespan.

What warranty does Interlock Metal Roofing offer, and how long will it really last?

The Guardian warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material coverage for the original owner and one-time transferable for a second owner (50 years from completion), covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. This structure reflects Interlock's confidence: the company has manufactured aluminum roofing since 1998, and panels installed in the 1990s remain in service across North America. In Dayton's 121 cm snow and 995 mm rain, you can expect your roof to outlast two or three asphalt replacements, making it genuinely the last roof you'll buy.

Is metal roofing better for the environment than asphalt shingles?

Substantially. Interlock aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable, breaking the asphalt tear-off-to-landfill cycle that occurs every 15–25 years for conventional roofs. Over Dayton's lifetime, a traditional home goes through 2–3 asphalt replacements, each sending tons to waste; Interlock installs once and recycles at end-of-life. The material is also CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, so there's no chemical runoff from annual cleaning. Choosing aluminum eliminates decades of disposal cost and environmental burden while delivering a roof proven to withstand Maine's 121 cm annual snowfall and 995 mm rainfall without degradation.
