Review: February 10, 2017 Completion: September 30, 2016

We have had significant damage due to water leaks inside our house over the past 5-6 years. The reasons behind these leaks were ice dams and icicles. Our house is facing north. It gets minimum or no direct sun exposure most winter months. Repairs were costly. The problem, however, would recur every winter. Our roof was about 15-year old and it was not in a bad shape. We had a contractor installing a reinforcement felt in the area of interest (cost about four thousand dollars labor and material) but failed to correct the issue. After a thorough research, we were left to choose between electrical panels or a metal roof. We opted for the later, for both, safety and aesthetic reasons. We found Interlock Industries through internet-Google- search. We are pleased with our 2 choices (metal roof and Interlock) for the following reasons, with few remarks: Estimate and contract Done properly, in a pressure-free environment. Larry Ebbs understood and executed his role well. Communication and coordination With the central office were excellent (Jennifer Simons) Execution A highly professional crew. Neat, detail-oriented, highly efficient, and courteous workers. Two caveats: The crew who worked on our house was not fluent in English, and communication, when occasionally needed, had to happen over a cell phone. The start was phenomenally fast; completing the job dragged a bit longer. Cost Expensive upfront. About 3 times the cost of a shingle roof; cost will go down to about 2.5x with discounts and incentives. Financing option is available, but the interest rate is relatively high. A " data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">tax credit is available since (Interlock) metal roofs are energy efficient. Head Roofer Paul McAllister is outstanding (as a person and as far as quality of work). In addition to the metal roof, Paul and his crew successfully fixed a chronic leak from a small flat roof in the back of the house. This is a leak that we tried to repair at least twice (different contractors) without success. Results \* Functionality: We have had 2 major snow storms this winter, between 12-15 inches of snow each time, comparable to prior years. We are delighted to announce that we have not had any leaks. " title="Ice dams" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Ice dams continued to form, mainly in the northern section of the house (where the insulation, we believe, is imperfect), but they are much smaller in size and fewer in number. No further icicles noted (make sure you don’t stand underneath the roof after a snowy day, as the snow slides off the roof like an avalanche). One downside is the noise caused by the rain drops. This noise is here to stay and will bother some people. \* Appearance: The roof look is outstanding. Sharp and perfect geometry. The color contrasts nicely with the paint. Overall If you live in a snowy region, and you are planning on replacing the roof of your home for functional or aesthetic reasons, or for both, I highly recommend metal roofing. I also recommend metal roofing for new constructions in these areas as well. If you decide to go with a metal roof, Interlock Industries (New England) will meet or exceed your expectations.

Review: February 27, 2024 Completion: April 8, 2005

I have had the cedar aluminum shingled style roof for about 15 years and it looks just as good as the day it was installed. Have not had one issue with it. I highly recommend it.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Humarock

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Humarock, Massachusetts. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Humarock.

Does a metal roof handle Humarock's snow and ice buildup?

Yes—aluminum's slick surface actually sheds snow and ice better than asphalt. Humarock gets about 71 cm of snow annually plus roughly 69 freeze-thaw cycles per year, which is brutal on shingles because repeated melting and refreezing causes cracks and deterioration. Interlock's four-way interlocking panels won't split or curl from that cycling. Snow may slide off faster on a metal roof (particularly on standing seam or shake profiles), so many homeowners add snow guards for safety. The lightweight aluminum design means no structural reinforcement is needed, even as snow accumulates.

Can aluminum metal roofing rust in coastal or wet climates?

Aluminum cannot rust because it contains no iron—the material that causes rust in steel. Instead, aluminum forms a microscopic oxide layer that self-heals when scratched or damaged. This is especially important in Humarock, where annual rainfall reaches 1179 mm and coastal salt air can degrade steel roofs. Interlock panels use roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy with a Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish applied to both sides, warranted 30 years against chalking. That dual-sided coating provides extra protection in salt-air environments, which is why Interlock installations range from coastal homes to an Antarctic research station.

Will my house need structural work to support a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock metal roofing is extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile installs at about 0.59 lb per square foot, roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. Most existing roof frames can support that weight without modification. In contrast, slate or clay tile can require expensive structural upgrades. Because aluminum weighs so little, Interlock even installs directly over many existing asphalt roofs, avoiding the cost and landfill impact of tear-off. This simplicity cuts installation time and labor costs, making the switch to a permanent roof more affordable than you might expect.

How does a metal roof hold up to freeze-thaw damage?

Aluminum expands and contracts slightly with temperature swings, but it does so uniformly and doesn't crack, rot, or split the way wood or asphalt shingles do. Humarock experiences about 69 freeze-thaw days per year—meaning moisture enters shingles, freezes, expands, and breaks them apart. Aluminum resists that cycle entirely. The four-way interlocking design allows micro-movement without compromising the seal, and the Alunar fluorocarbon coating (ASTM D4214/D2244 rated) remains flexible across temperature ranges. After 25+ years of installations in similar New England climates, Interlock panels show no performance degradation from seasonal cycling.

Can a metal roof survive nor'easters and coastal wind in Massachusetts?

Absolutely. Interlock roofing is warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph when installed to specification. Humarock's typical gusts reach about 139 km/h (86 mph), well within that margin. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together on all edges, distributing lateral forces across the entire roof rather than relying on fasteners alone. This overlap design is why the ICC-ES evaluation report (ESR-1790) and UL testing support such high wind ratings. Coastal storms are intense, but the same locking mechanism that sheds snow also prevents wind uplift—a critical advantage over shingles, which tear free when fasteners fail.

What's the hail rating on Interlock metal roofing, and will insurance companies care?

Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. While Humarock's climate data doesn't emphasize hail, the Class 4 rating means your roof will outperform asphalt in severe weather. Some insurers offer discounts for impact-resistant roofing; contact your agent with the UL 2218 rating and the ESR-1790 code compliance report to explore savings. A metal roof's durability often leads to lower premiums over the structure's lifetime compared to roofing that requires repeated replacement.

Does heavy rainfall cause leaks in a metal roof?

No. Interlock's four-way interlocking seams are designed to shed water, not trap it. With Humarock receiving about 1179 mm of rain annually, leak prevention is critical. The overlapping panels channel water downslope like fish scales, and the solid deck beneath (typically plywood) plus an underlayment create a triple defense. When installed to ICC-ES ESR-1790 specifications, the system is as leak-proof as any roofing can be. Leaks are far more common in asphalt when shingles lift, curl, or granulate—none of which happens to aluminum. The seams never separate; the interlocking is mechanical and permanent.

What's the warranty on an Interlock metal roof, and how long will it actually last?

The Guardian Warranty is a lifetime limited, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rusting, rotting, splitting, cracking, curling, and loss of impact resistance. It's also one-time transferable, giving the next owner a 50-year term from completion—a major advantage if you sell. Aluminum doesn't rot or rust, so the warranty protects against manufacturing defects and coating failure (the Alunar finish is warranted 30 years). Real-world lifespan often exceeds 50 years; Interlock has been manufactured since 1998, and field reports from coastal and extreme environments suggest 60+ years is realistic. This is genuinely the last roof you'll buy.

How much maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or tile?

Metal requires far less. Asphalt shingles need annual inspections for lifted tabs, granule loss, and moss (especially in Humarock's 1179 mm annual rainfall); wood or tile roofs require periodic sealing, repointing, or replacement of cracked pieces. Interlock metal simply needs occasional gutter cleaning and a gentle rinse if debris accumulates—that's it. Aluminum doesn't rot, split, or degrade under UV exposure or moisture. The Alunar coating is CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance, meaning lower labor costs over the roof's 50+ year lifespan. You're essentially paying for installation once, then enjoying decades of weather protection without ongoing repair budgets.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost compared to asphalt shingles?

Yes, when you calculate the total cost over the roof's life. Asphalt shingles cost less initially but last 15-25 years, requiring at least two replacement cycles in the time one Interlock roof lasts 50+. With Humarock's 69 annual freeze-thaw days and 1179 mm rain, shingles degrade faster than in mild climates. Factor in labor for tear-offs, landfill disposal, and the disruption of multiple replacements, and metal becomes the lower-cost option. Right now, Interlock offers no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, making the upfront gap even smaller. Plus, the lifetime warranty and transferable 50-year term add resale value—most buyers will pay more for a home with a permanent roof already installed.
