What our customers are saying:

★★★★★
Review: October 27, 2022Completion: October 18, 2022

I think that the installers were phenomenal. Interlock Roofing could improve by keeping the clients more up to date. I had to call numerous times to check on start date.

Review: October 25, 2022Completion: September 26, 2022

Be sure to have a penalty for exceeding time limits. They could improve on communication and adherence to the contract period of installation. The product is great and the installers were fabulous. Feedback for #1: The management was very bad, but the roof looks very good and it is rated very highly, so I was able to get a reduction in my insurance. Additional Comments: Other than being ambivalent on the fact it took so long to get it done, we checked out the product, so we felt it was a good product. One thing that would have done a lot more, is to actually do emails or put it in writing so the customer actually knows what is going on during that period of expected service. I would have been more than willing to wait longer on the issue but because they were already exceeding the contract by the time I had to contact someone else to intervene, I have to say kudos to the interventionist.

There was a period of several months between signing the contract and getting a date for installation when I couldn't get my calls returned. I was beginning to get worried.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Maplewood

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Maplewood, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Maplewood.

Does a metal roof handle Minnesota snow and ice dams as well as asphalt shingles?

Metal roofs actually shed snow and ice better than asphalt because the smooth, slippery surface prevents buildup that leads to dams. Maplewood receives about 94 cm of snow annually, and Interlock's four-way interlocking panels create a sealed surface that sheds meltwater efficiently. The lightweight design—Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft—means no structural risk even with full snow load, whereas traditional materials require reinforcement. Optional snow guards can be installed where needed to control runoff safely.

Will freeze-thaw cycles in Minnesota damage an aluminum metal roof?

Aluminum is immune to freeze-thaw damage because it contains no iron and cannot rust—the primary failure mechanism in traditional roofing under repeated freeze cycles. Maplewood experiences roughly 81 freeze-thaw days per year, a condition that cracks asphalt and causes wood to split and curl. Interlock's 3105-H24 / 3003-H24 aluminum alloy expands and contracts predictably, and even minor scratches heal automatically through aluminum's natural oxide layer. This is why Interlock has performed flawlessly from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctic research stations.

Why can't aluminum metal roofing rust like steel roofing does?

Aluminum literally cannot rust because rust requires iron—and aluminum contains none. Instead, aluminum develops a thin, invisible oxide layer that actually protects the metal underneath and self-heals when scratched. This matters enormously in Minnesota's 843 mm annual rainfall and variable humidity. Steel roofing, by contrast, rusts from the inside out when coatings are breached. Interlock's roofing-grade aluminum (ASTM B209 certified) is paired with a 30-year-warranted Alunar PVDF coating on both sides, giving dual protection without the corrosion risk inherent to ferrous metals.

How does a metal roof hold up to Minnesota wind gusts and storms?

Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph even in this region where gusts typically reach 95 km/h. The panels lock together on all four sides, creating a unified system that distributes wind load across the entire roof rather than relying on fasteners alone. With ICC-ES ESR-1790 code evaluation (reissued 2025) and UL testing behind the design, the roof performs as a single structure. Maplewood's typical gusts of 95 km/h won't stress a system engineered for twice that speed, giving you confidence through spring storm season.

Can my house support a metal roof, or do I need to reinforce the structure?

Most Maplewood homes need zero structural reinforcement. Interlock's Slate profile weighs just 0.41 lb/sq ft—so light that it can install directly over your existing asphalt roof without adding meaningful structural load. Compare that to concrete or clay tile, which weighs 25 to 30 times more: Interlock's Tile profile is roughly 96% lighter, eliminating the need for costly beams or added framing. Your home's framing was designed to handle snow loads (which Maplewood receives about 94 cm of annually), so a feather-light metal roof is actually far less demanding than the winter snow your current roof carries.

Will a metal roof reduce hail damage and potentially lower my insurance costs?

Interlock carries UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches, which is significantly larger than typical hail. This exceptional durability often qualifies homeowners for insurance discounts; contact your insurer with the UL 2218 Class 4 certification and ESR-1790 code report for review. Minnesota hail events can be severe, and a roof proven to absorb impact without cracking, curling, or losing impact resistance is a strong asset to your policy. Some carriers specifically recognize non-combustible, impact-rated roofs as lower-risk investments.

Does a metal roof really save money on cooling in Minnesota summers?

Interlock's energy-efficient colors reflect solar heat instead of absorbing it the way dark asphalt does, helping keep attics cooler during Minnesota's roughly 3,110 annual sunshine hours. Cool Roof Rating Council testing shows thermal emissivity up to 0.84 and initial solar reflectance up to 0.55 (Aged Copper Penny color). That reflectance means less air-conditioning load on hot days and lower cooling bills over time. While Minnesota winters are cold, this reflective property reduces unwanted summer heat gain without penalizing winter performance—your heating system handles seasonal needs regardless. The net effect over the roof's 50+ year lifespan is measurable energy savings.

What maintenance does a metal roof need compared to asphalt or tile?

Interlock metal roofing requires far less maintenance than asphalt, wood, or tile. It won't crack, curl, rot, or split—conditions that demand regular repair on traditional roofs in Minnesota's 81 annual freeze-thaw days. Asphalt requires moss treatment, wood needs sealing, and tile cracks under impact or freeze cycles. With Interlock, you're looking at occasional gutter cleaning and inspection after severe storms; CALGreen verification confirms reduced maintenance burden. The 30-year Alunar coating warranty against chalking and fading means your roof's appearance is protected without refinishing. Most homeowners find metal roofing requires less attention over its lifetime than asphalt needs in just the first decade.

How long will my metal roof last, and what's actually covered by the warranty?

The Guardian Warranty is unusual: lifetime limited, fully transferable, non-prorated material warranty for the original owner, covering rust, rot, splitting, cracking, curling, and impact resistance loss. When you sell, the next owner inherits 50 years of warranty protection from project completion—a major sales advantage in Maplewood's competitive market. Interlock has manufactured these panels since 1998 in Delta, BC, and installed them from coastal salt-air homes to Antarctic research stations, proving real-world durability. Given Maplewood's 843 mm annual rain, 94 cm snow, and variable freeze-thaw cycles, this is your last roof—no tear-off-and-landfill cycle needed for decades.

Is a metal roof worth the upfront cost over a typical asphalt roof lifespan in Minnesota?

Asphalt roofs last 15-25 years in Minnesota's climate before needing replacement; over 50 years, you'll replace asphalt 2-3 times, paying tear-off, disposal, and reinstallation each cycle. Interlock's lifetime limited warranty means one roof covers the life you'll own the home, plus 50 years of protection for the next owner. Calculate: three asphalt replacements (material, labor, and landfill fees) typically exceed one metal roof's installed cost. Add avoided repairs from hail (UL Class 4), freeze-thaw cracking, and rot, plus energy-efficiency cooling savings over 50 years, and metal becomes the lower total-cost option. The transferable warranty also improves resale appeal in Maplewood's market.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Maplewood’s climate?

Yes. Maplewood averages about 94 cm of snow, 843 mm of rain, roughly 81 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
