Review: August 20, 2024 Completion: August 13, 2024

From the start to finish, we loved their work and communication. There were no nails, metal bits, or excessive noise. They listened to all questions and addressed our concerns. They were careful to make no promise of a start date that they could not fulfill. The rain this year made it hard to predict! I would do a commercial for them free to endorse their work and product!

Review: June 23, 2017 Completion: July 19, 2016

Scheduling - Crew showed up without notification. Professionalism - Job was sold prior to arrival. Sales call lasted 45 min and could have been 15. Need to recognize when to close the picture books and close the deal. Crew was polite and cleaned up after themselves but they removed fence sections without requesting permission and did not protect gutters from damage or scuffing. Good crew but when paying a premium for a product exceptional service is expected. No one ever came back for the lawn sign. I had to go looking on your website site for an energy star certificate that should come with the warrantee documents. Would like to be able to purchase the product and install myself.

There are areas that they fell short on. One would be the coordinating effort with the solar panel installation project. Another, would be more consistent and timely communication with the ridge cap repair. My feedback is real feedback and I appreciate this opportunity to be called on again for this survey. I needed the extra time, for things to be taken care of. We had to combine a metal roof with the solar panels. It's a smart thing to do together.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Saint Paul

The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Saint Paul.

Will metal roofing hold up to Saint Paul's freeze-thaw cycles?

Yes—aluminum actually thrives in freeze-thaw conditions because it expands and contracts uniformly without cracking or rotting. Saint Paul experiences about 81 freeze-thaw days per year, and the material's oxide layer (which self-heals when scratched) stays intact through repeated temperature swings that would split asphalt, wood, or traditional tile. The four-way interlocking panels flex as a system, so seasonal movement never compromises the seal. After 25+ years in similar northern climates, Interlock roofing shows no degradation from this cycle.

How does a metal roof handle Saint Paul's snow load and ice dams?

Metal roofing's smooth, interlocked surface sheds snow and ice far more effectively than asphalt, reducing ice dam buildup that typically forms when heat escapes through conventional roofs. Saint Paul averages about 94 cm of snow annually, and the lightweight aluminum panels (Slate at 0.41 lb/sq ft) mean no snow load stress on your structure—in fact, the roof installs directly over most existing roofs without reinforcement. You can add snow guards to specific zones if desired, but the geometry itself encourages natural shedding.

Can a metal roof withstand Saint Paul's winter wind gusts?

The four-way interlocking aluminum panels are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h)—far exceeding Saint Paul's typical gusts, which average about 18 km/h with occasional spikes to 95 km/h. Each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides, distributing wind load across the entire roof rather than relying on fasteners alone. This engineering means you get the same durability in a March windstorm that you'd expect from a coastal installation, with no special reinforcement required.

Do I need to reinforce my house to support a metal roof?

No structural reinforcement is needed. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily light—the Mediterranean Tile profile weighs about 0.59 lb/sq ft, roughly 96% lighter than concrete or clay tile. This means the roof can install directly over most existing asphalt without adding structural load, and older homes with standard framing handle it without modification. In Saint Paul, where many roofs carry 94 cm of snow annually, the light weight actually helps: your frame stays unstressed even during heavy snow events, unlike traditional tile or slate installations that require expensive reinforcement.

Will my homeowner's insurance recognize a metal roof's hail rating?

Yes—Interlock metal roofing carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest available, and the warranty even covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. Many insurance companies recognize this rating and offer discounts on policies covering metal roofing, though you should verify with your carrier. The combination of impact resistance and non-combustible aluminum (Class A fire available per ICC-ES ESR-1790) sometimes qualifies homeowners for both hail and fire discounts, offsetting installation costs over the policy term.

How much maintenance does a metal roof actually need?

Very little compared to asphalt, wood, or tile. Aluminum doesn't rot, split, curl, or lose granules, so you avoid the 10-to-15-year replacement cycle that asphalt demands in Saint Paul's wet climate (843 mm rain annually). The Alunar coating is verified by CALGreen for reduced maintenance, and routine care is limited to occasional gutter cleaning and inspection after severe weather. Unlike wood shake, you'll never pressure-wash to prevent algae; unlike clay tile, you'll never replace cracked pieces. This translates to decades of predictable, low-cost ownership.

Is metal roofing worth the upfront cost versus asphalt?

Over a 50-year horizon, metal roofing is the last roof you'll buy, making it the better long-term value. An asphalt roof lasts 10-15 years in Saint Paul's climate and demands multiple replacements; each tear-off adds labor, disposal, and material costs. Interlock's lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner, 50 years for the next owner) eliminates those cycles and transfer costs, which compound on resale. Factor in energy savings from energy-efficient colors (up to 0.55 solar reflectance), potential insurance discounts from UL Class 4 hail and Class A fire ratings, and avoided maintenance—the upfront premium is recaptured within 20-25 years and then runs free.

Can a metal roof really reduce my cooling costs in Minnesota?

Yes, when you choose energy-efficient colors with high solar reflectance (up to 0.55 for Aged Copper Penny) and thermal emissivity of 0.84. These coatings reflect heat that asphalt absorbs, keeping your roof cooler in summer and lowering air conditioning demand. Even in Saint Paul's northern climate (about 3,110 sunshine hours annually), summer cooling savings are measurable. The reflectance difference means your attic temperature drops noticeably on hot days, reducing the load on your HVAC system. Combined with the 30-year coating warranty, you maintain reflectance performance decade after decade without degradation.

Is aluminum roofing actually better for the environment than asphalt?

Yes—aluminum ends the tear-off-to-landfill cycle that defines asphalt ownership. At end of life (which won't be for 50+ years), aluminum is approximately 95% recyclable, with scrap value that often offsets disposal costs; asphalt shingles go to landfill. Over your roof's lifetime, you avoid the repeated manufacturing, shipping, and disposal emissions of multiple asphalt replacements in Saint Paul's climate (843 mm rain, 94 cm snow annually, with about 81 freeze-thaw days that accelerate shingle degradation). The one-time installation of Interlock metal roofing eliminates that environmental debt entirely.

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Saint Paul?

Interlock Metal Roofing has served the Saint Paul region since 2001, providing local expertise in northern Minnesota's specific climate challenges—heavy snow loads, freeze-thaw cycling, and seasonal temperature swings. They're familiar with Ramsey County building codes, local permitting, and installation requirements for homes ranging from historic structures to modern builds. Direct local service means faster response times, accountability, and installers who understand how to properly set panels and underlayment to handle Saint Paul's 95 km/h wind gusts and spring ice dams. This local track record backs the ICC-ES ESR-1790 installation specifications that validate your warranty.

Is a metal roof a good choice for Saint Paul’s climate?

Yes. Saint Paul averages about 94 cm of snow, 843 mm of rain, roughly 81 freeze–thaw days a year, with peak wind gusts near 95 km/h. Interlock® aluminum roofing is wind-rated to 193+ km/h (120 mph), UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated and Class A fire-rated, and its four-way interlocking panels shed snow and resist ice dams and freeze–thaw cracking — all backed by a lifetime limited, transferable warranty.
