Interlock® Aluminum Roofing — all-climates performance specs for Astoria, Oregon
| Spec / Rating | Climate / Risk Factor + What It Solves |
|---|---|
| Wind resistance: 120+ mph (193+ kph) | Extreme wind, hurricanes, storm uplift: full interlocking attachment helps prevent blow-offs, edge lifting, and panel loss in high-gust events. |
| Fire rating: Class A (with proper assembly) | Wildfire, embers, radiant heat, chimney sparks: non-combustible roof assembly provides the highest residential fire protection rating. |
| Hail resistance: UL 2218 Class 4 | Hail and impact debris: highest impact classification; resists cracking, splitting, and surface loss common with asphalt under hail strikes. |
| Snow & ice performance: interlocking, shedding profile | Heavy snow, freeze-thaw, ice dams: smooth aluminum sheds snow efficiently and the interlocking design helps block water intrusion when melt-refreeze cycles occur. (Final snow-load capacity depends on roof structure and local code.) |

What our customers are saying:
We have only had our new roof for 3 months & we are so far satisfied with the quality of the materials. However, nearly every other part of our experience was less than satisfactory. We cannot risk our credibility to encourage someone we know to pay a premium price for this experience. Despite our request, we still have not received any documentation regarding our roof warranty nor information about future care/maintenance or repairs of the roof. And since our experience has been less than satisfying, we dread having to ever contact Interlock in the future for any assistance about the roof.
I have already recommended Interlock roofing and will continue to do so as I don’t think you could get a better roof for the money spent. The start time delays were the only issue for the whole job.
I would have liked them to use their own equipment instead of using my new ladder. Homeowner works on an oil tanker and will be away from the home for the next 2 months. He was there for the start of the project but not the completion. Wife signed off on the project with the contingency that he is satisfied with it when he finally come back to look at it.
We appreciate their understanding in terminating the contract.

Metal Roofing FAQs for Homeowners in Astoria
The following metal roofing FAQs are designed specifically for homeowners in Astoria, Oregon. Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing roof, understanding how roofing materials perform in local weather conditions is essential. From wind and storm protection to fire resistance, hail impact, snow loads, and coastal moisture exposure, Interlock’s Lifetime Aluminum Roofing System is engineered to provide long-term durability, energy efficiency, and peace of mind in Astoria.
With Astoria's 1,839 mm of annual rainfall, how does a metal roof handle heavy rain without leaking?
Metal roofs shed water faster than asphalt because rain runs off the hard, smooth surface rather than soaking into granules. Interlock's four-way interlocking aluminum panels overlap tightly, and when installed to spec over a solid deck with underlayment, they create a two-stage barrier identical in quietness to asphalt. The panels themselves carry ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 for water management under IBC/IRC codes. In Astoria's wet climate, this design means water drains continuously instead of ponding or seeping into seams like traditional shingles do.
Does metal roofing handle Astoria's snow and freeze-thaw cycles without damage?
Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature changes, but its smooth, sloped surface naturally slides snow off rather than trapping it into ice dams like asphalt does. With about 37 cm of annual snow and roughly 10 freeze-thaw days per year, Astoria's conditions are mild enough that metal roofing thrives—the frequent cycling that weakens asphalt actually has less impact on aluminum, which has no granules to crack or fibers to split. Optional snow guards are available if you want to retain snow for insulation. The four-way interlocking design distributes any movement stress across the entire panel assembly.
Will a metal roof rust in Astoria's coastal salt-air environment?
No. Interlock uses roofing-grade 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloy (ASTM B209), which contains zero iron—iron is what rusts. Aluminum instead forms a transparent oxide layer that heals itself when scratched, and Interlock's Alunar 70% PVDF fluorocarbon finish (applied to both sides) adds a protective coating warranted 30 years against chalking and fading. In coastal-influenced climates like Astoria with salt-air exposure, this dual protection is especially critical. The company has installed panels from salt-air homes to an Antarctic research station since 1998, proving aluminum's corrosion resistance where steel would fail entirely.
Can a metal roof survive Astoria's coastal winds and storm gusts?
Yes. Interlock roofs are warranted to resist wind speeds up to 120 mph (193 km/h) when installed to spec. Astoria's typical daily-max winds are about 20 km/h with gusts reaching 147 km/h—well within the warranty envelope. The four-way interlocking aluminum panels lock together in all directions, distributing wind pressure across the entire roof assembly rather than relying on fasteners alone. This design has proven itself across decades of PNW coastal installations. Unlike shingles that can lift or curl in strong gusts, metal panels stay locked in place, and the lightweight aluminum (about 0.41 lb/sq ft for Shingle profile) means less wind load is applied to your structure overall.
Do I need to reinforce my roof structure for a metal roof?
No structural reinforcement needed. Interlock's aluminum panels are extraordinarily light—the Slate and Shingle profiles install at roughly 0.41 lb/sq ft, and even the Mediterranean Tile profile, which replicates the look of heavy clay or concrete tile, weighs only about 0.59 lb/sq ft. That makes it approximately 96% lighter than real tile. Most Astoria homes can handle this added weight easily, and in many cases the roof actually carries less total load than the asphalt shingles it replaces. This also means you can install Interlock directly over your existing roof in many situations, eliminating costly tear-off and disposal—a major advantage in rainy climates where tear-offs extend project timelines.
Is metal roofing worth the cost compared to replacing asphalt shingles?
Upfront cost is higher than asphalt, but metal is the last roof you'll buy. Asphalt typically lasts 15–25 years and requires replacement, tear-off, and landfill disposal—a cycle you repeat multiple times over a 50–70 year home ownership. Interlock's lifetime limited warranty (non-prorated for the original owner) and 50-year transferable coverage mean you're installing a roof that outlasts mortgages. Over Astoria's 1,839 mm annual rainfall and frequent weather cycles, asphalt deteriorates faster; metal's durability eliminates recurring replacement costs, labor disruption, and the environmental impact of repeatedly tearing off and hauling away shingles. With current financing offering no payments and no interest until Spring 2027, the math shifts decisively in metal's favor.
Is a metal roof fire-safe in Oregon?
Aluminum is non-combustible and Interlock offers Class A fire classification, the highest available rating. This matters in Oregon, where wildfire risk is a growing concern. While Astoria itself sits in a low-wildfire-risk zone, having a non-combustible roof improves home insurance profiles and resale appeal statewide. Class A ratings are awarded only to materials that cannot ignite or spread flame, and aluminum meets that criterion inherently. Check with your insurer—some offer premium discounts for Class A metal roofing, offsetting purchase cost over time. The ICC-ES evaluation ESR-1790 confirms fire performance under IBC/IRC standards.
What happens if hail damages a metal roof?
Interlock panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating—the highest available—and the Guardian Warranty covers perforation from hailstones up to 1.5 inches. While large hail is rare in Astoria, the region does experience occasional spring and fall storms. Class 4 impact resistance is tested by dropping steel balls from 48 inches, simulating severe hail. Some homeowners find their insurers offer premium reductions for Class 4 rated roofs because the risk of storm-related claims drops sharply. The warranty protection means you're covered even in the unlikely event of significant hail impact, giving you peace of mind that your 1,839 mm annual rainfall isn't the only weather variable you're protecting against.
How much maintenance does a metal roof need?
Far less than asphalt, wood, or tile. Interlock aluminum panels resist cracking, curling, rotting, and splitting—problems that plague other materials in Astoria's freeze-thaw cycles (about 10 per year) and heavy rain. Asphalt shingles require regular inspection and often need moss treatment in the PNW's damp climate; wood shake requires periodic sealing; tile can crack and needs mortar repair. Interlock panels are CALGreen-verified for reduced maintenance and need only occasional gutter cleaning and visual inspections. The 30-year warranty on the Alunar coating protects against chalking and fading, so you won't see weathering like asphalt does. Over the roof's lifetime, this means lower labor costs and fewer service calls interrupting your life.
Who installs Interlock metal roofing in the Astoria area?
Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc. has served the region since 1997—nearly three decades of local experience installing metal roofs across Clatsop County and the greater Pacific Northwest. They understand Astoria's unique coastal climate, the 1,839 mm of annual rainfall, salt-air exposure, and the specific wind and freeze-thaw patterns that shape roof performance here. Working with a local installer means faster response times, familiarity with local building codes, and the ability to source matching panels for future repairs. They're currently offering either no payments and no interest until Spring 2027 or 10% off installation, making this an ideal time to upgrade.
